Dissipation losses limiting first-order phase transition materials in cryogenic caloric cooling: A case study on all-d-metal Ni(-Co)-Mn-Ti Heusler alloys

Ni-Mn-based Heusler alloys, in particular all-d-metal Ni(-Co)-Mn-Ti, are highly promising materials for energy-efficient solid-state refrigeration as large multicaloric effects can be achieved across their magnetostructural martensitic transformation. However, no comprehensive study on the crucially important transition entropy change ΔstΔs_t exists so far for Ni(-Co)-Mn-Ti. Here, we present a systematic study analyzing the composition and temperature dependence of ΔstΔs_t. Our results reveal a substantial structural entropy change contribution of approximately 65 J(kgK)−1^{-1}, which is compensated at lower temperatures by an increasingly negative entropy change associated with the magnetic subsystem. This leads to compensation temperatures TcompT_{comp} of 75 K and 300 K in Ni35_{35}Co15_{15}Mn50−y_{50-y}Tiy_{y} and Ni33_{33}Co17_{17}Mn50−y_{50-y}Tiy_{y}, respectively, below which the martensitic transformations are arrested. In addition, we simultaneously measured the responses of the magnetic, structural and electronic subsystems to the temperature- and field-induced martensitic transformation near TcompT_{comp}, showing an abnormal increase of hysteresis and consequently dissipation energy at cryogenic temperatures. Simultaneous measurements of magnetization and adiabatic temperature change ΔTadΔT_{ad} in pulsed magnetic fields reveal a change in sign of ΔTadΔT_{ad} and a substantial positive and irreversible ΔTadΔT_{ad} up to 15 K at 15 K as a consequence of increased dissipation losses and decreased heat capacity. Most importantly, this phenomenon is universal, it applies to any first-order material with non-negligible hysteresis and any stimulus, effectively limiting the utilization of their caloric effects for gas liquefaction at cryogenic temperatures.

Evidence for a Ru4+^{4+} Kondo Lattice in LaCu3_3Ru4_4O12_{12}

Rare dd-electron derived heavy-fermion properties of the solid-solution series LaCu3_3Rux_xTi4−x_{4-x}O12_{12} were studied for 1≤x≤41 \leq x \leq 4 by resistivity, susceptibility, specific-heat measurements, and magnetic-resonance techniques. The pure ruthenate (x=4x = 4) is a heavy-fermion metal characterized by a resistivity proportional to T2T^2 at low temperatures TT. The coherent Kondo lattice formed by the localized Ru 4dd electrons is screened by the conduction electrons leading to strongly enhanced effective electron masses. By increasing titanium substitution the Kondo lattice becomes diluted resulting in single-ion Kondo properties like in the paradigm 4f4f-based heavy-fermion compound Cex_xLa1−x_{1-x}Cu2.05_{2.05}Si2_2 [M. Ocko {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{64}, 195106 (2001)]. In LaCu3_3Rux_xTi4−x_{4-x}O12_{12} the heavy-fermion behavior finally breaks down on crossing the metal-to-insulator transition close to x=2x = 2.
