A homogenized bending theory for prestrained plates

The presence of prestrain can have a tremendous effect on the mechanical behavior of slender structures. Prestrained elastic plates show spontaneous bending in equilibrium -- a property that makes such objects relevant for the fabrication of active and functional materials. In this paper we study microheterogeneous, prestrained plates that feature nonflat equilibrium shapes. Our goal is to understand the relation between the properties of the prestrained microstructure and the global shape of the plate in mechanical equilibrium. To this end, we consider a three-dimensional, nonlinear elasticity model that describes a periodic material that occupies a domain with small thickness. We consider a spatially periodic prestrain described in the form of a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient. By simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction, we rigorously derive an effective plate model as a Γ-limit for vanishing thickness and period. That limit has the form of a nonlinear bending energy with an emergent spontaneous curvature term. The homogenized properties of the bending model (bending stiffness and spontaneous curvature) are characterized by corrector problems. For a model composite -- a prestrained laminate composed of isotropic materials -- we investigate the dependence of the homogenized properties on the parameters of the model composite. Secondly, we investigate the relation between the parameters of the model composite and the set of shapes with minimal bending energy. Our study reveals a rather complex dependence of these shapes on the composite parameters.

A nonlinear bending theory for nematic LCE plates

In this paper, we study an elastic bilayer plate composed of a nematic liquid crystal elastomer in the top layer and a nonlinearly elastic material in the bottom layer. While the bottom layer is assumed to be stress-free in the flat reference configuration, the top layer features an eigenstrain that depends on the local liquid crystal orientation. As a consequence, the plate shows non-flat deformations in equilibrium with a geometry that non-trivially depends on the relative thickness and shape of the plate, material parameters, boundary conditions for the deformation, and anchorings of the liquid crystal orientation. We focus on thin plates in the bending regime and derive a two-dimensional bending model that combines a nonlinear bending energy for the deformation, with a surface Oseen-Frank energy for the director field that describes the local orientation of the liquid crystal elastomer. Both energies are nonlinearly coupled by means of a spontaneous curvature term that effectively describes the nematic-elastic coupling. We rigorously derive this model as a Γ-limit from three-dimensional, nonlinear elasticity. We also devise a new numerical algorithm to compute stationary points of the two-dimensional model. We conduct numerical experiments and present simulation results that illustrate the practical properties of the proposed scheme as well as the rich mechanical behavior of the system.

Modeling and simulation of nematic LCE rods

We introduce a nonlinear, one-dimensional bending-twisting model for an inextensible bi-rod that is composed of a nematic liquid crystal elastomer. The model combines an elastic energy that is quadratic in curvature and torsion with a Frank-Oseen energy for the liquid crystal elastomer. Moreover, the model features a nematic-elastic coupling that relates the crystalline orientation with a spontaneous bending-twisting term. We show that the model can be derived as a $Γ$-limit from three-dimensional nonlinear elasticity. Moreover, we introduce a numerical scheme to compute critical points of the bending-twisting model via a discrete gradient flow. We present various numerical simulations that illustrate the rich mechanical behavior predicted by the model. The numerical experiments reveal good stability and approximation properties of the method.

Optimal homogenization rates in stochastic homogenization of nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations and systems

We derive optimal-order homogenization rates for random nonlinear elliptic PDEs with monotone nonlinearity in the uniformly elliptic case. More precisely, for a random monotone operator on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with stationary law (i.e. spatially homogeneous statistics) and fast decay of correlations on scales larger than the microscale $\varepsilon>0$, we establish homogenization error estimates of the order $\varepsilon$ in case $d\geq 3$, respectively of the order $\varepsilon |\log \varepsilon|^{1/2}$ in case $d=2$. Previous results in nonlinear stochastic homogenization have been limited to a small algebraic rate of convergence $\varepsilon^δ$. We also establish error estimates for the approximation of the homogenized operator by the method of representative volumes of the order $(L/\varepsilon)^{-d/2}$ for a representative volume of size $L$. Our results also hold in the case of systems for which a (small-scale) $C^{1,α}$ regularity theory is available.

Quantitative estimates in stochastic homogenization for correlated coefficient fields

This paper is about the homogenization of linear elliptic operators in divergence form with stationary random coefficients that have only slowly decaying correlations. It deduces optimal estimates of the homogenization error from optimal growth estimates of the (extended) corrector. In line with the heuristics, there are transitions at dimension $d=2$, and for a correlation-decay exponent $β=2$; we capture the correct power of logarithms coming from these two sources of criticality. The decay of correlations is sharply encoded in terms of a multiscale logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI) for the ensemble under consideration --- the results would fail if correlation decay were encoded in terms of an $α$-mixing condition. Among other ensembles popular in modelling of random media, this class includes coefficient fields that are local transformations of stationary Gaussian fields. The optimal growth of the corrector $ϕ$ is derived from bounding the size of spatial averages $F=\int g\cdot\nablaϕ$ of its gradient. This in turn is done by a (deterministic) sensitivity estimate of $F$, that is, by estimating the functional derivative $\frac{\partial F}{\partial a}$ of $F$ w.~r.~t.~the coefficient field $a$. Appealing to the LSI in form of concentration of measure yields a stochastic estimate on $F$. The sensitivity argument relies on a large-scale Schauder theory for the heterogeneous elliptic operator $-\nabla\cdot a\nabla$. The treatment allows for non-symmetric $a$ and for systems like linear elasticity.

Moment bounds on the corrector of stochastic homogenization of non-symmetric elliptic finite difference equations

We consider the corrector equation from the stochastic homogenization of uniformly elliptic finite-difference equations with random, possibly non-symmetric coefficients. Under the assumption that the coefficients are stationary and ergodic in the quantitative form of a Logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI), we obtain optimal bounds on the corrector and its gradient in dimensions $d \geq 2$. Similar estimates have recently been obtained in the special case of diagonal coefficients making extensive use of the maximum principle and scalar techniques. Our new method only invokes arguments that are also available for elliptic systems and does not use the maximum principle. In particular, our proof relies on the LSI to quantify ergodicity and on regularity estimates on the derivative of the discrete Green's function in weighted spaces.

Homogenization of the nonlinear bending theory for plates

We carry out the spatially periodic homogenization of nonlinear bending theory for plates. The derivation is rigorous in the sense of Gamma-convergence. In contrast to what one naturally would expect, our result shows that the limiting functional is not simply a quadratic functional of the second fundamental form of the deformed plate as it is the case in nonlinear plate theory. It turns out that the limiting functional discriminates between whether the deformed plate is locally shaped like a "cylinder" or not. For the derivation we investigate the oscillatory behavior of sequences of second fundamental forms associated with isometric immersions, using two-scale convergence. This is a non-trivial task, since one has to treat two-scale convergence in connection with a nonlinear differential constraint.

Moment bounds for the corrector in stochastic homogenization of a percolation model

We study the corrector equation in stochastic homogenization for a simplified Bernoulli percolation model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d>2$. The model is obtained from the classical $\{0,1\}$-Bernoulli bond percolation by conditioning all bonds parallel to the first coordinate direction to be open. As a main result we prove (in fact for a slightly more general model) that stationary correctors exist and that all finite moments of the corrector are bounded. This extends a previous result in [GO1], where uniformly elliptic conductances are treated, to the degenerate case. With regard to the associated random conductance model, we obtain as a side result that the corrector not only grows sublinearly, but slower than any polynomial rate. Our argument combines a quantification of ergodicity by means of a Spectral Gap on Glauber dynamics with regularity estimates on the gradient of the elliptic Green's function.

On the commutability of homogenization and linearization in finite elasticity

We study non-convex elastic energy functionals associated to (spatially) periodic, frame indifferent energy densities with a single non-degenerate energy well at SO(n). Under the assumption that the energy density admits a quadratic Taylor expansion at identity, we prove that the Gamma-limits associated to homogenization and linearization commute. Moreover, we show that the homogenized energy density, which is determined by a multi-cell homogenization formula, has a quadratic Taylor expansion with a quadratic term that is given by the homogenization of the quadratic term associated to the linearization of the initial energy density.
