$Λ_c \to Λ^*(1520)$ form factors from lattice QCD and improved analysis of the $Λ_b \to Λ^*(1520)$ and $Λ_b \to Λ_c^*(2595,2625)$ form factors

We present the first lattice-QCD calculation of the form factors governing the charm-baryon semileptonic decays $Λ_c \to Λ^*(1520)\ell^+ν_\ell$. As in our previous calculation of the $Λ_b \to Λ^*(1520)$ form factors, we work in the $Λ^*(1520)$ rest frame, but here we use four different heavy-baryon momenta instead of just two. Because of the lower mass of the $Λ_c$, the moderately-sized momenta used here are sufficient to determine the form factors in the full kinematic range of the semileptonic decay. We also update the analysis of our lattice results for the $Λ_b \to Λ^*(1520)$ and $Λ_b \to Λ_c^*(2595,2625)$ form factors by imposing exact relations among the different form factors at zero recoil that follow from rotational symmetry. Imposing these relations ensures the correct behavior of the angular observables near the endpoint.

A lattice QCD perspective on weak decays of b and c quarks Snowmass 2022 White Paper

Lattice quantum chromodynamics has proven to be an indispensable method to determine nonperturbative strong contributions to weak decay processes. In this white paper for the Snowmass community planning process we highlight achievements and future avenues of research for lattice calculations of weak $b$ and $c$ quark decays, and point out how these calculations will help to address the anomalies currently in the spotlight of the particle physics community. With future increases in computational resources and algorithmic improvements, percent level (and below) lattice determinations will play a central role in constraining the standard model or identifying new physics.

Charm-baryon semileptonic decays and the strange $Λ^*$ resonances: New insights from lattice QCD

Understanding the properties of the strange $Λ^*$ baryon resonances is a long-standing and fascinating problem. $Λ_c$ charm-baryon semileptonic weak decays to these resonances are highly sensitive to their internal structure and can be used to test theoretical models. We have performed the first lattice-QCD computation of the form factors governing $Λ_c$ semileptonic decays to a $Λ^*$ resonance: the $Λ^*(1520)$, which has negative parity and spin $3/2$. Here we present the resulting Standard-Model predictions of the $Λ_c\toΛ^*(1520)\ell^+ν_\ell$ differential and integrated decay rates as well as angular observables. Furthermore, by combining the recent BESIII measurement of the $Λ_c \to X e^+ ν_e$ inclusive semipositronic branching fraction [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 251801 (2018)] with lattice-QCD predictions of the $Λ_c \to Λe^+ ν_e$, $Λ_c \to n e^+ ν_e$, and $Λ_c \to Λ^*(1520) e^+ ν_e$ decay rates, we obtain an upper limit on the sum of the branching fractions to all other semipositronic final states. In particular, this upper limit constrains the $Λ_c\toΛ^*(1405)e^+ ν_e$ branching fraction to be very small, which may be another hint for a molecular structure of the $Λ^*(1405)$.

Search for $\bar{b} \bar{b} u s$ and $\bar{b} \bar{c} u d$ tetraquark bound states using lattice QCD

We use lattice QCD to investigate the existence of strong-interaction-stable antiheavy-antiheavy-light-light tetraquarks. We study the $\bar b \bar b u s$ system with quantum numbers $J^P = 1^+$ as well as the $\bar b \bar c u d$ systems with quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 0(0^+)$ and $I(J^P) = 0(1^+)$. We carry out computations on five gauge-link ensembles with $2 + 1$ flavors of domain-wall fermions, including one at the physical pion mass. The bottom quarks are implemented using lattice nonrelativistic QCD, and the charm quarks using an anisotropic clover action. In addition to local diquark-antidiquark and local meson-meson interpolating operators, we include nonlocal meson-meson operators at the sink, which facilitates the reliable determination of the low-lying energy levels. We find clear evidence for the existence of a strong-interaction-stable $\bar b \bar b u s$ tetraquark with binding energy $(-86 \pm 22 \pm 10) \, \text{MeV}$ and mass $(10609 \pm 22 \pm 10) \, \text{MeV}$. For the $\bar b \bar c u d$ systems we do not find any indication for the existence of bound states, but cannot rule out their existence either.

The $πγ\to ππ$ transition and the $ρ$ radiative decay width from lattice QCD

We report a lattice QCD determination of the $πγ\to ππ$ transition amplitude for the $P$-wave, $I=1$ two-pion final state, as a function of the photon virtuality and $ππ$ invariant mass. The calculation was performed with $2+1$ flavors of clover fermions at a pion mass of approximately $320$ MeV, on a $32^3 \times 96$ lattice with $L\approx 3.6$ fm. We construct the necessary correlation functions using a combination of smeared forward, sequential and stochastic propagators, and determine the finite-volume matrix elements for all $ππ$ momenta up to $|\vec{P}|= \sqrt{3} \frac{2π}{L}$ and all associated irreducible representations. In the mapping of the finite-volume to infinite-volume matrix elements using the Lellouch-Lüscher factor, we consider two different parametrizations of the $ππ$ scattering phase shift. We fit the $q^2$ and $s$ dependence of the infinite-volume transition amplitude in a model-independent way using series expansions, and compare multiple different truncations of this series. Through analytic continuation to the $ρ$ resonance pole, we also determine the $πγ\to ρ$ resonant transition form factor and the $ρ$ meson photocoupling, and obtain $|G_{ρπγ}| = 0.0802(32)(20)$.

$I=1/2$ $S$-wave and $P$-wave $Kπ$ scattering and the $κ$ and $K^*$ resonances from lattice QCD

We present a lattice-QCD determination of the elastic isospin-$1/2$ $S$-wave and $P$-wave $Kπ$ scattering amplitudes as a function of the center-of-mass energy using Lüscher's method. We perform global fits of $K$-matrix parametrizations to the finite-volume energy spectra for all irreducible representations with total momenta up to $\sqrt{3}\frac{2π}{L}$; this includes irreps that mix the $S$- and $P$-waves. Several different parametrizations for the energy dependence of the $K$-matrix are considered. We also determine the positions of the nearest poles in the scattering amplitudes, which correspond to the broad $κ$ resonance in the $S$-wave and the narrow $K^*(892)$ resonance in the $P$-wave. Our calculations are performed with $2+1$ dynamical clover fermions for two different pion masses of $317.2(2.2)$ and $175.9(1.8)$ MeV. Our preferred $S$-wave parametrization is based on a conformal map and includes an Adler zero; for the $P$-wave we use a standard pole parametrization including Blatt-Weisskopf barrier factors. The $S$-wave $κ$-resonance pole positions are found to be $\left[0.86(12) - 0.309(50)\,i\right]\:{\rm GeV}$ at the heavier pion mass and $\left[0.499(55)- 0.379(66)\,i\right]\:{\rm GeV}$ at the lighter pion mass. The $P$-wave $K^*$-resonance pole positions are found to be $\left[ 0.8951(64) - 0.00250(21)\,i \right]\:{\rm GeV}$ at the heavier pion mass and $\left[0.8718(82) - 0.0130(11)\,i\right]\:{\rm GeV}$ at the lighter pion mass, which corresponds to couplings of $g_{K^* Kπ}=5.02(26)$ and $g_{K^* Kπ}=4.99(22)$, respectively.

Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes of Upsilons

Based on lattice non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) studies we present results for Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes for $Υ(1S)$, $Υ(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ in vacuum as well as in quark-gluon plasma. Our study is based on 2+1 flavor $48^3 \times 12$ lattices generated using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action and with a pion mass of $161$ MeV. At zero temperature the Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes follow the expectations based on non-relativistic potential models. At non-zero temperatures, the interpretation of Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes turns out to be more nuanced, but consistent with our previous lattice QCD study of excited Upsilons in quark-gluon plasma.

Excited bottomonia in quark-gluon plasma from lattice QCD

We present the first lattice QCD study of up to $3S$ and $2P$ bottomonia at non-zero temperatures. Correlation functions of bottomonia were computed using novel bottomonium operators and a variational technique, within the lattice non-relativistic QCD framework. We analyzed the bottomonium correlation functions based on simple physically-motivated spectral functions. We found evidence of sequential in-medium modifications, in accordance with the sizes of the bottomonium states.

Investigation of Doubly Heavy Tetraquark Systems using Lattice QCD

We search for possibly existent bound states in the heavy-light tetraquark channels with quark content $ \bar{b}\bar{b}ud $, $ \bar{b}\bar{b}us $ and $ \bar{b}\bar{c}ud $ using lattice QCD. We carry out calculations on several gauge link ensembles with $ N_f=2+1 $ flavours of domain-wall fermions and consider a basis of local and non-local interpolators. Besides extracting the energy spectrum from the correlation matrices, we also perform a Lüscher analysis to extrapolate our results to infinite volume.

Quarkonium at non-zero isospin density

We calculate the energies of quarkonium bound states in the presence of a medium of nonzero isospin density using lattice QCD. The medium, created using a canonical (fixed isospin charge) approach, induces a reduction of the quarkonium energies. As the isospin density increases, the energy shifts first increase and then saturate. The saturation occurs at an isospin density close to that where previously a qualitative change in the behaviour of the energy density of the medium has been observed, which was conjectured to correspond to a transition from a pion gas to a Bose-Einstein condensed phase. The reduction of the quarkonium energies becomes more pronounced as the heavy-quark mass is decreased, similar to the behaviour seen in two-colour QCD at non-zero quark chemical potential. In the process of our analysis, the $η_b$-$π$ and $Υ$-$π$ scattering phase shifts are determined at low momentum. An interpolation of the scattering lengths to the physical pion mass gives $a_{η_b,π} = 0.0025(8)(6)$ fm and $a_{Υ,π} = 0.0030(9)(7)$ fm.

Thermal Broadening of Bottomonia: Lattice Non-Relativistic QCD with Extended Operators

We present lattice non-relativistic QCD calculations of bottomonium correlation functions at temperatures $T \simeq 150-350$ MeV. The correlation functions were computed using extended bottomonium operators, and on background gauge-field configurations for 2+1-flavor QCD having physical kaon and nearly-physical pion masses. We analyzed these correlation functions based on simple theoretically-motivated parameterizations of the corresponding spectral functions. The results of our analyses are compatible with significant in-medium thermal broadening of the ground state S- and P-wave bottomonia.

Bayesian analysis of $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ Wilson coefficients using the full angular distribution of $Λ_b\to Λ(\to p\, π^-)μ^+μ^-$ decays

Following updated and extended measurements of the full angular distribution of the decay $Λ_b\to Λ(\to p\,π^-)μ^+μ^-$ by the LHCb collaborations, as well as a new measurement of the $Λ\to p π^-$ decay asymmetry parameter by the BESIII collaboration, we study the impact of these results on searches for non-standard effects in exclusive $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ decays. To this end, we constrain the Wilson coefficients $\mathcal{C}_{9}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{10}$ of the numerically leading dimension-six operators in the weak effective Hamiltonian, in addition to the relevant nuisance parameters. In stark contrast to previous analyses of this decay mode, the changes in the updated experimental results lead us to find very good compatibility with both the Standard Model and with the $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ anomalies observed in rare $B$-meson decays. We provide a detailed analysis of the impact of the partial angular distribution, the full angular distribution, and the $Λ_b\to Λμ^+μ^-$ branching fraction on the Wilson coefficients. In this process, we are also able to constrain the size of the production polarization of the $Λ_b$ baryon at LHCb.

Hadrons and Nuclei

This document is one of a series of whitepapers from the USQCD collaboration. Here, we discuss opportunities for lattice QCD calculations related to the structure and spectroscopy of hadrons and nuclei. An overview of recent lattice calculations of the structure of the proton and other hadrons is presented along with prospects for future extensions. Progress and prospects of hadronic spectroscopy and the study of resonances in the light, strange and heavy quark sectors is summarized. Finally, recent advances in the study of light nuclei from lattice QCD are addressed, and the scope of future investigations that are currently envisioned is outlined.

A study of the radiative transition $ππ\to πγ^{*}$ with lattice QCD

Lattice QCD calculations of radiative transitions between hadrons have in the past been limited to processes of hadrons stable under the strong interaction. Recently developed methods for $1\to2$ transition matrix elements in a finite volume now enable the determination of radiative decay rates of strongly unstable particles. Our lattice QCD study focuses on the process $ππ\to πγ^{*}$, where the $ρ$ meson is present as an enhancement in the cross-section. We use $2+1$ flavors of clover fermions at a pion mass of approximately $320$ MeV and a lattice size of approximately $3.6$ fm. The required $2$-point and $3$-point correlation functions are constructed from a set of forward, sequential and stochastic light quark propagators. In addition to determining the $ρ$ meson resonance parameters via the Lüscher method, the scattering phase shift is used in conjunction with the $1\to2$ transition matrix element formalism of Briceño, Hansen and Walker-Loud to compute the $ππ\toπγ^{*}$ amplitude at several values of the momentum transfer and $ππ$ invariant mass.

Computing the nucleon Dirac radius directly at $Q^2=0$

We describe a lattice approach for directly computing momentum derivatives of nucleon matrix elements using the Rome method, which we apply to obtain the isovector magnetic moment and Dirac radius. We present preliminary results calculated at the physical pion mass using a 2HEX-smeared Wilson-clover action. For removing the effects of excited-state contamination, the calculations were done at three source-sink separations and the summation method was used.

Lattice QCD study of heavy-heavy-light-light tetraquark candidates

We investigate heavy-light four-quark systems $ud\bar b \bar b$ with bottom quarks of finite mass which are treated in the framework of NRQCD. We focus on $I(J^P)=0(1^+)$, where we recently found evidence for the existence of a tetraquark state using static bottom quarks. Furthermore, we report on an investigation of the $u \bar d b \bar b$ four-quark system with quantum numbers $I(J^P)=1(1^+)$ again using static bottom quarks.

Using $Λ_b\to Λμ^+μ^-$ data within a Bayesian analysis of $|ΔB| = |ΔS| = 1$ decays

We study the impact of including the baryonic decay $Λ_b\to Λ(\to p π^-)μ^+μ^-$ in a Bayesian analysis of $|ΔB | = |ΔS| = 1$ transitions. We perform fits of the Wilson coefficients $C_{9}$, $C_{9'}$, $C_{10}$ and $C_{10'}$, in addition to the relevant nuisance parameters. Our analysis combines data for the differential branching fraction and three angular observables of $Λ_b\to Λ(\to p π^-)μ^+μ^-$ with data for the branching ratios of $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$ and inclusive $b \to s\ell^+\ell^-$ decays. Newly available precise lattice QCD results for the full set of $Λ_b \to Λ$ form factors are used to evaluate the observables of the baryonic decay. Our fits prefer shifts to $C_{9}$ that are opposite in sign compared to those found in global fits of only mesonic decays, and the posterior odds show no evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. We investigate a possible hadronic origin of the observed tensions between theory and experiment.

$Λ_b \to p \ell^- \barν_\ell$ and $Λ_b \to Λ_c \ell^- \barν_\ell$ form factors from lattice QCD with relativistic heavy quarks

Measurements of the $Λ_b \to p \ell^- \barν_\ell$ and $Λ_b \to Λ_c \ell^- \barν_\ell$ decay rates can be used to determine the magnitudes of the CKM matrix elements $V_{ub}$ and $V_{cb}$, provided that the relevant hadronic form factors are known. Here we present a precise calculation of these form factors using lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors of dynamical domain-wall fermions. The $b$ and $c$ quarks are implemented with relativistic heavy-quark actions, allowing us to work directly at the physical heavy-quark masses. The lattice computation is performed for six different pion masses and two different lattice spacings, using gauge-field configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations. The $b \to u$ and $b \to c$ currents are renormalized with a mostly nonperturbative method. We extrapolate the form factor results to the physical pion mass and the continuum limit, parametrizing the $q^2$-dependence using $z$-expansions. The form factors are presented in such a way as to enable the correlated propagation of both statistical and systematic uncertainties into derived quantities such as differential decay rates and asymmetries. Using these form factors, we present predictions for the $Λ_b \to p \ell^- \barν_\ell$ and $Λ_b \to Λ_c \ell^- \barν_\ell$ differential and integrated decay rates. Combined with experimental data, our results enable determinations of $|V_{ub}|$, $|V_{cb}|$, and $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ with theory uncertainties of 4.4%, 2.2%, and 4.9%, respectively.

Flavor physics with $Λ_b$ baryons

At the LHC, bottom baryons are being produced in unprecedented quantities, which opens up a new field for flavor physics. For example, the decay $Λ_b \to p μ^- \barν$ can be used to obtain a novel determination of the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$, and the decay $Λ_b \to Λμ^+ μ^-$ probes the weak interactions at the loop level. The first lattice calculations of the relevant $Λ_b \to p$ and $Λ_b \to Λ$ form factors have recently been performed using domain-wall light quarks and static $b$ quarks. To further reduce the theoretical uncertainty, one has to go beyond the static approximation. Here I present new calculations of $Λ_b \to p$, $Λ_b \to Λ$, and $Λ_b \to Λ_c$ form factors using a relativistic heavy-quark action.

High-precision calculation of the strange nucleon electromagnetic form factors

We report a direct lattice QCD calculation of the strange nucleon electromagnetic form factors $G_E^s$ and $G_M^s$ in the kinematic range $0 \leq Q^2 \lesssim 1.2\: {\rm GeV}^2$. For the first time, both $G_E^s$ and $G_M^s$ are shown to be nonzero with high significance. This work uses closer-to-physical lattice parameters than previous calculations, and achieves an unprecedented statistical precision by implementing a recently proposed variance reduction technique called hierarchical probing. We perform model-independent fits of the form factor shapes using the $z$-expansion and determine the strange electric and magnetic radii and magnetic moment. We compare our results to parity-violating electron-proton scattering data and to other theoretical studies.

Calculation of $B^0 \to K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$ and $B_s^0 \to ϕμ^+ μ^-$ observables using form factors from lattice QCD

We calculate the differential branching fractions and angular distributions of the rare decays $B^0 \to K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$ and $B_s^0 \to ϕμ^+ μ^-$, using for the first time form factors from unquenched lattice QCD. We focus on the kinematic region where the $K^*$ or $ϕ$ recoils softly; there the newly available form factors are most precise and the nonlocal matrix elements can be included via an operator product expansion. Our results for the differential branching fractions calculated in the Standard Model are higher than the experimental data. We consider the possibility that the deviations are caused by new physics, and perform a fit of the Wilson coefficients $C_9$ and $C_9^\prime$ to the experimental data for multiple $B^0 \to K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$ and $B_s^0 \to ϕμ^+ μ^-$ observables. In agreement with recent results from complementary studies, we obtain $C_9-C_9^{SM} = -1.0 \pm 0.6$ and $C_9^\prime = 1.2 \pm 1.0$, whose deviations from zero would indicate the presence of non-standard fundamental interactions.

Charmed bottom baryon spectroscopy from lattice QCD

We calculate the masses of baryons containing one, two, or three heavy quarks using lattice QCD. We consider all possible combinations of charm and bottom quarks, and compute a total of 36 different states with $J^P = \frac12^+$ and $J^P = \frac32^+$. We use domain-wall fermions for the up, down, and strange quarks, a relativistic heavy-quark action for the charm quarks, and nonrelativistic QCD for the bottom quarks. Our analysis includes results from two different lattice spacings and seven different pion masses. We perform extrapolations of the baryon masses to the continuum limit and to the physical pion mass using $SU(4|2)$ heavy-hadron chiral perturbation theory including $1/m_Q$ and finite-volume effects. For the 14 singly heavy baryons that have already been observed, our results agree with the experimental values within the uncertainties. We compare our predictions for the hitherto unobserved states with other lattice calculations and quark-model studies.

Lattice QCD calculation of form factors describing the rare decays $B \to K^* \ell^+ \ell^-$ and $B_s \to ϕ\ell^+ \ell^-$

The rare decays $B^0 \to K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$ and $B_s \to ϕμ^+ μ^-$ are now being observed with enough precision to test Standard Model predictions. A full understanding of these decays requires accurate determinations of the corresponding hadronic form factors. Here we present results of lattice QCD calculations of the $B \to K^*$ and $B_s \to ϕ$ form factors; we also determine the form factors relevant for the tree-level decays $B_s \to K^* \ell ν$. We use full-QCD configurations including 2+1 flavors of sea quarks using an improved staggered action, and we employ lattice non-relativistic QCD to describe the bottom quark.

$Λ_b \to p l^- \barν$ form factors from lattice QCD with static b quarks

We present a lattice QCD calculation of form factors for the decay $Λ_b \to p μ^- \barν$, which is a promising channel for determining the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ at the Large Hadron Collider. In this initial study we work in the limit of static b quarks, where the number of independent form factors reduces to two. We use dynamical domain-wall fermions for the light quarks, and perform the calculation at two different lattice spacings and at multiple values of the light-quark masses in a single large volume. Using our form factor results, we calculate the $Λ_b \to p μ^- \barν$ differential decay rate in the range $14 GeV^2 \leq q^2 \leq q^2_{max}$, and obtain the integral $\int_{14 GeV^2}^{q^2_{max}} [dΓ/dq^2] dq^2 / |V_{ub}|^2 = 15.3 \pm 4.2 ps^{-1}$. Combined with future experimental data, this will give a novel determination of $|V_{ub}|$ with about 15\% theoretical uncertainty. The uncertainty is dominated by the use of the static approximation for the b quark, and can be reduced further by performing the lattice calculation with a more sophisticated heavy-quark action.

Nucleon form factors with light Wilson quarks

We present nucleon observables - primarily isovector vector form factors - from calculations using 2+1 flavors of Wilson quarks. One ensemble is used for a dedicated high-precision study of excited-state effects using five source-sink separations between 0.7 and 1.6 fm. We also present results from a larger set of calculations that include an ensemble with pion mass 149 MeV and box size 5.6 fm, which nearly eliminates the uncertainty associated with extrapolation to the physical pion mass. The results show agreement with experiment for the vector form factors, which occurs only when excited-state contributions are reduced. Finally, we show results from a subset of ensembles that have pion mass 254 MeV with varying temporal and spatial box sizes, which we use for a controlled study of finite-volume effects and a test of the "$m_πL=4$" rule of thumb.

Omega_bbb excited-state spectroscopy from lattice QCD

Triply heavy baryons are very interesting systems analogous to heavy quarkonia, but are difficult to access experimentally. Lattice QCD can provide precise predictions for these systems, which can be compared to other theoretical approaches. In this work, the spectrum of excited states of the Omega_bbb baryon is calculated using lattice NRQCD for the b quarks, and using a domain-wall action for the u, d and s sea quarks. The calculations are done for multiple values of the sea-quark masses, and for two different lattice spacings. The energies of states with angular momentum up to J=7/2 are calculated, and the effects of rotational symmetry breaking by the lattice are analyzed. Precise results are obtained even for the small spin-dependent energy splittings, and the contributions of individual NRQCD interactions to these energy splittings are studied. The results are compared to potential-model calculations.

Axial couplings and strong decay widths of heavy hadrons

We calculate the axial couplings of mesons and baryons containing a heavy quark in the static limit using lattice QCD. These couplings determine the leading interactions in heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory and are central quantities in heavy quark physics, as they control strong decay widths and the light-quark mass dependence of heavy hadron observables. Our analysis makes use of lattice data at six different pion masses, 227 MeV < m_π< 352 MeV, two lattice spacings, a=0.085, 0.112 fm, and a volume of (2.7 fm)^3. Our results for the axial couplings are g_1=0.449(51), g_2=0.84(20), and g_3=0.71(13), where g_1 governs the interaction between heavy-light mesons and pions and g_{2,3} are similar couplings between heavy-light baryons and pions. Using our lattice result for g_3, and constraining 1/m_Q corrections in the strong decay widths with experimental data for Σ_c^{(*)} decays, we obtain Γ[Σ_b^{(*)} \to Λ_b π^\pm] = 4.2(1.0), 4.8(1.1), 7.3(1.6), 7.8(1.8) MeV for the Σ_b^+, Σ_b^-, Σ_b^{*+}, Σ_b^{*-} initial states, respectively. We also derive upper bounds on the widths of the Ξ_b^{\prime(*)} baryons.

Axial couplings of heavy hadrons from domain-wall lattice QCD

We calculate matrix elements of the axial current for static-light mesons and baryons in lattice QCD with dynamical domain wall fermions. We use partially quenched heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory in a finite volume to extract the axial couplings g_1, g_2, and g_3 from the data. These axial couplings allow the prediction of strong decay rates and enter chiral extrapolations of most lattice results in the b sector. Our calculations are performed with two lattice spacings and with pion masses down to 227 MeV.

Calculation of the heavy-hadron axial couplings g_1, g_2, and g_3 using lattice QCD

In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 172003 (2012), arXiv:1109.2480] we have reported on a lattice QCD calculation of the heavy-hadron axial couplings $g_1$, $g_2$, and $g_3$. These quantities are low-energy constants of heavy-hadron chiral perturbation theory (HH$χ$PT) and are related to the $B^*Bπ$, $Σ_b^*Σ_bπ$, and $Σ_b^{(*)}Λ_bπ$ couplings. In the following, we discuss important details of the calculation and give further results. To determine the axial couplings, we explicitly match the matrix elements of the axial current in QCD with the corresponding matrix elements in HH$χ$PT. We construct the ratios of correlation functions used to calculate the matrix elements in lattice QCD, and study the contributions from excited states. We present the complete numerical results and discuss the data analysis in depth. In particular, we demonstrate the convergence of $SU(4|2)$ HH$χ$PT for the axial-current matrix elements at pion masses up to about 400 MeV and show the impact of the nonanalytic loop contributions. Finally, we present additional predictions for strong and radiative decay widths of charm and bottom baryons.

Excited-state spectroscopy of triply-bottom baryons from lattice QCD

The spectrum of baryons containing three b quarks is calculated in nonperturbative QCD, using the lattice regularization. The energies of ten excited bbb states with J^P = 1/2^+, 3/2^+, 5/2^+, 7/2^+, 1/2^-, and 3/2^- are determined with high precision. A domain-wall action is used for the up-, down- and strange quarks, and the bottom quarks are implemented with NRQCD. The computations are done at lattice spacings of a \approx 0.11 fm and a \approx 0.08 fm, and the results demonstrate the improvement of rotational symmetry as a is reduced. A large lattice volume of (2.7 fm)^3 is used, and extrapolations of the bbb spectrum to realistic values of the light sea-quark masses are performed. All spin-dependent energy splittings are resolved with total uncertainties of order 1 MeV, and the dependence of these splittings on the couplings in the NRQCD action is analyzed.

Form factors for Lambda_b -> Lambda transitions from lattice QCD

The rare baryonic decays $Λ_b \to Λμ^+ μ^-$ and $Λ_b \to Λγ$ can complement rare $B$ meson decays in constraining models of new physics. In this work, we calculate the relevant $Λ_b \to Λ$ transition form factors at leading order in heavy-quark effective theory using lattice QCD. Our analysis is based on RBC/UKQCD gauge field ensembles with 2+1 flavors of domain-wall fermions, and with lattice spacings of $a\approx 0.11$ fm and $a\approx 0.08$ fm. We compute appropriate ratios of three-point and two-point correlation functions for a wide range of source-sink separations, and extrapolate to infinite separation in order to eliminate excited-state contamination. We then extrapolate the form factors to the continuum limit and to the physical values of the light-quark masses.

We present the first lattice QCD determination of the $Λ_b \to Λ$ transition form factors that govern the rare baryonic decays $Λ_b \to Λl^+ l^-$ at leading order in heavy-quark effective theory. Our calculations are performed with 2+1 flavors of domain-wall fermions, at two lattice spacings and with pion masses down to 227 MeV. Three-point functions with a wide range of source-sink separations are used to extract the ground-state contributions. The form factors are extrapolated to the physical values of the light-quark masses and to the continuum limit. We use our results to calculate the differential branching fractions for $Λ_b \to Λl^+ l^-$ with $l=e,μ,τ$ within the standard model. We find agreement with a recent CDF measurement of the $Λ_b \to Λμ^+ μ^-$ differential branching fraction.

Axial couplings in heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory at the next-to-leading order

We present calculations of axial-current matrix elements between various heavy-meson and heavy-baryon states to the next-to-leading order in heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory in the p-regime. When compared with data from lattice computations or experiments, these results can be used to determine the axial couplings in the chiral Lagrangian. Our calculation is performed in partially-quenched chiral perturbation theory for both SU(4|2) and SU(6|3). We incorporate finite-size effects arising from a single Goldstone meson wrapping around the spatial volume. Results for full QCD with two and three flavours can be obtained straightforwardly by taking the sea-quark masses to be equal to the valence-quark masses. To illustrate the impact of our chiral perturbation theory calculation on lattice computations, we analyse the SU(2) full QCD results in detail. We also study one-loop contributions relevant to the heavy hadron strong-decay amplitudes involving final-state Goldstone bosons, and demonstrate that the quark-mass dependence of these amplitudes can be significantly different from that of the axial current matrix elements containing only single hadron external states.

Bottomonium spectrum at order v^6 from domain-wall lattice QCD: precise results for hyperfine splittings

The bottomonium spectrum is computed in dynamical 2+1 flavor lattice QCD, using NRQCD for the b quarks. The main calculations in this work are based on gauge field ensembles generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations with the Iwasaki action for the gluons and a domain-wall action for the sea quarks. Lattice spacing values of approximately 0.08 fm and 0.11 fm are used, and simultaneous chiral extrapolations to the physical pion mass are performed. As a test for gluon discretization errors, the calculations are repeated on two ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration with the Luscher-Weisz gauge action. Gluon discretization errors are also studied in a lattice potential model using perturbation theory for four different gauge actions. The nonperturbative lattice QCD results for the radial and orbital bottomonium energy splittings obtained from the RBC/UKQCD ensembles are found to be in excellent agreement with experiment. To get accurate results for spin splittings, the spin-dependent order-v^6 terms are included in the NRQCD action, and suitable ratios are calculated such that most of the unknown radiative corrections cancel. The cancellation of radiative corrections is verified explicitly by repeating the calculations with different values of the couplings in the NRQCD action. Using the lattice ratios of the S-wave hyperfine and the 1P tensor splitting, and the experimental result for the 1P tensor splitting, the 1S hyperfine splitting is found to be 60.3+-5.5(stat)+-5.0(syst)+-2.1(exp) MeV, and the 2S hyperfine splitting is predicted to be 23.5+-4.1(stat)+-2.1(syst)+-0.8(exp) MeV.

Prediction of the Omega_bbb mass from lattice QCD

The mass of the triply heavy baryon Omega_bbb is calculated in lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors of light sea quarks. The b quark is implemented with improved lattice NRQCD. Gauge field ensembles from both the RBC/UKQCD and MILC collaborations with lattice spacings in the range from 0.08 fm to 0.12 fm are used. The final result for the Omega_bbb mass, which includes an electrostatic correction, is 14.371+-0.004(stat)+-0.011(syst)+-0.001(exp) GeV. The hyperfine splitting between the physical J=3/2 state and a fictitious J=1/2 state is also calculated.

Bottom hadrons from lattice QCD with domain wall and NRQCD fermions

Dynamical 2+1 flavor lattice QCD is used to calculate the masses of bottom hadrons, including B mesons, singly and doubly bottom baryons, and for the first time also the triply-bottom baryon Omega_bbb. The domain wall action is used for the up-, down-, and strange quarks (both valence and sea), while the bottom quark is implemented with non-relativistic QCD. A calculation of the bottomonium spectrum is also presented.

Radiative corrections to the m(oving)NRQCD action and heavy-light operators

Rare decays of B mesons, such as B \to K^*γand B\to K^{(*)}\ell^+\ell^- are loop suppressed in the Standard Model and sensitive to new physics. The final state meson in heavy-light decays at large recoil has sizeable momentum in the rest frame of the decaying meson. To reduce the resulting discretization errors we formulate the nonrelativistic heavy quark action in a moving frame. We discuss the perturbative renormalization of the leading order heavy-light operators in the resulting theory which is known as m(oving)NRQCD. We also present radiative corrections to the NRQCD action computed using automated lattice perturbation theory. By combining this technique with high-beta simulations in the weak coupling regime of the theory higher order loop corrections can be calculated very efficiently.
