Lepton-mass effects in the decays $H \to ZZ^{\ast} \to \ell^{+} \ell^{-} τ^{+} τ^{-}$ and $H \to WW^{\ast} \to \ell ντν_τ$

We consider lepton-mass effects in the cascade decays $H\to Z(\to \ell^{+} \ell^{-})+Z^{\ast}(\to τ^{+}τ^{-})$ and $H\to W^{-}(\to \ell^{-}\bar ν_{\ell})+W^{+\ast}(\to τ^{+}ν_τ)$. Since the scale of the problem is set by the off-shellness $q^{2}$ of the respective gauge bosons in the limits $(m_{\ell}+m_{\ell'})^{2} \le q^{2} \le (m_{H}-m_{W,Z})^{2}$ and not by $m_{W,Z}^{2}$, lepton-mass effects are non-negligible for the $τ$ modes in particular close to the threshold of the off-shell decays. Lepton-mass effects show up e.g.\ in the three-fold joint angular decay distribution for the decays. Nonzero lepton masses lead to leptonic helicity-flip contributions which in turn can generate novel angular dependencies in the respective three-fold angular decay distributions. Lepton-mass effects are more pronounced in the $H \to Z(\to \ell\ell)Z^{\ast}(\toττ)$ mode which, in part, is due to the fact that the ratio of lepton helicity flip/nonflip contributions in the decay $Z^{\ast} \to \ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ is four times larger than in the decay $W^{+\ast}\to \ell^{+}ν$. We also briefly consider the corresponding off-shell -- off-shell decays $H\to Z^{\ast}(\to \ell^{+}\ell^{-})+Z^{\ast}(\to τ^{+}τ^{-})$ and $H\to W^{-\ast}(\to \ell^{-}\bar ν_{\ell})+W^{+\ast}(\to τ^{+}ν_τ)$.

Prospects of constraining the Higgs CP nature in the tau decay channel at the LHC

We investigate how precisely the CP nature of the 125 GeV Higgs boson, parametrized by a scalar-pseudoscalar Higgs mixing angle, can be determined in Higgs-to-tau-pair decay with subsequent tau-lepton decays to charged prongs at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We combine two methods in order to define an observable which is sensitive to this scalar-pseudoscalar mixing angle: We use the rho-decay plane method for tau-to-rho decays and the impact parameter method for all other major tau decays. For estimating the precision with which the mixing angle can be measured at the LHC (13 TeV) we take into account the background from Drell-Yan production and perform a Monte Carlo simulation of measurement uncertainties on the signal and background distributions. We obtain that the mixing angle can be determined with an uncertainty of 15 degree (9 degree) at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 150 inverse fb (500 inverse fb), and with ~4 degree with 3 inverse ab. Future measurements of the scalar-pseudoscalar mixing angle yield direct information on whether or not there is an extended Higgs-boson sector with Higgs-sector CP violation. We analyze this in the context of a number of two-Higgs-doublet extensions of the Standard Model, namely the so-called aligned model and conventional two-Higgs-doublet extensions with tree-level neutral flavor conservation.

Determination of the Higgs CP mixing angle in the tau decay channels at the LHC including the Drell-Yan background

We investigate how precisely the CP nature of the 125 GeV Higgs boson resonance h can be unraveled at the LHC in its decays to tau pairs. We use a method which allows to determine the scalar-pseudoscalar Higgs mixing angle in this decay mode. This mixing angle can be extracted from the distribution of a signed angle, which we analyze for the major charged-prong tau decays. For definiteness, we consider Higgs-boson production by gluon fusion at NLO QCD. We take into account also the irreducible background from Drell-Yan production at NLO QCD. We compute, for the signal and background reactions, angular and energy correlations of the charged prongs and analyze which type of cuts suppress the Drell-Yan background. An important feature of this background is that its contribution to the distribution of our observable is a flat line, also at NLO QCD. By separating the Drell-Yan events into two different sets, two different non-trivial distributions are obtained. Based on this observation we propose to use these sets for calibation purposes. By Monte Carlo simulation we study also the effect of measurement uncertainties on this distribution. We estimate that the Higgs mixing angle can be determined with our method to a precision of 14 degree (5 degree) at the high luminosity LHC (14 TeV) with an integrated luminosity of 500 inverse fb (3 inverse ab).

Determination of the Higgs CP-mixing angle in the tau decay channels

The measurement of possible Higgs sector CP-violation in the tau decay channels at the LHC is investigated. A CP-violating effect would manifest itself in these decay modes in characteristic spin-spin correlations of the tau lepton pairs which can be accessed using the momenta and impact parameters of the charged tau decay particles. We examine a CP-sensitive observable for a 125 GeV Higgs boson resonance in the gluon fusion channel at the LHC. Furthermore, we consider the distribution of this observable for the irreducible Drell-Yan background. By splitting these events into two categories we obtain two different distributions which can be used for calibration purposes. Finally, we estimate the achievable precision of the scalar-pseudo-scalar mixing angle of the tau decay channel for Run II and the high luminosity run of the LHC.

Top Quark Charge Asymmetry: Searching for Light Axigluons in top pair + jet Production at the LHC

We investigate the discovery potential of light color-octet bosons in the mass range of 100 - 400 GeV in exclusive top-pair plus jet production at the LHC. We study the impact of such bosons on the incline, the energy and the rapidity asymmetries. We show that light axigluons with large couplings to quarks can be discovered at the LHC with a luminosity of a few inverse fb. Almost all of the considered axigluon parameter space can be probed using the already available 2011/2012 LHC data. In a small-coupling scenario, axigluons could be discovered using the charge asymmetry with 65 inverse fb at the LHC and a center of mass energy of 14 TeV. We furthermore show that top pair+jet production could reveal the existence of scenarios where axigluons couple with a different strength to up- and down-type quarks.

Charge Asymmetry in Top Pair plus Jet Production -- A Snowmass White Paper

We investigate the discovery potential of the top-quark charge asymmetry at the LHC in top-antitop production in association with a hard jet. In this process, the charge asymmetry can be accessed via two novel observables: the incline asymmetry, which probes the quark-antiquark channel, and the energy asymmetry, which gives access to the quark-gluon channel. At 8 TeV collision energy, the significance for both observables is statistically limited. With 14 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 50 inverse fb or more, an asymmetry of up to -12% can be observed with a statistical significance of more than 5 standard deviations. Prospects of measuring the charge asymmetry at the intended high-luminosity and high-energy LHC upgrades are discussed.

Higgs CP properties using the tau decay modes at the ILC

We investigate the prospects of determining the CP nature of the 126 GeV neutral spin-0 (Higgs) boson h, discovered at the LHC, at a future linear collider. We consider the production of h by the Higgsstrahlung process and its subsequent decays to tau leptons. We investigate how precisely a possible pseudoscalar component of h can be detected by the measurement of a suitably defined angular distribution, if all major decay modes of the tau lepton are used. From our numerical simulations, we estimate the expected precision to the scalar-pseudoscalar mixing angle, including estimates of the background and of measurement uncertainties, to be 2.8 degree for Higgs-boson production at a center-of-mass energy of 250 GeV and for a collider with integrated luminosity of 1 inverse attobarn.

Top-Quark Charge Asymmetry Goes Forward: Two New Observables for Hadron Colliders

We propose two new observables to measure the charge asymmetry in hadronic top-quark pair production in association with a hard jet. The incline asymmetry, based on the inclination between the planes of initial- and final-state momenta, probes the charge asymmetry in the quark-antiquark channel. Compared to the hitherto investigated rapidity asymmetries, the incline asymmetry provides improved access to the partonic charge asymmetry at both the Tevatron and the LHC. The energy asymmetry, based on the energy difference between top and antitop quarks, for the first time allows us to probe the charge asymmetry in the quark-gluon channel at the LHC. In quantum chromodynamics, asymmetries of up to -12% at the leading order are achievable with appropriate cuts. Top-pair plus jet production thus has the potential to become the discovery channel of the charge asymmetry in proton-proton collisions.

Determination of the CP parity of Higgs bosons in their tau decay channels at the ILC

We investigate a method for determining the CP nature of a neutral Higgs boson or spin-zero resonance at a future linear e+e- collider (ILC) in its tau decay channel. Our procedure is applicable if the production vertex of the Higgs boson can be measured. This will be the case, for example, for the Higgs-strahlung process. We show that the method is feasible for both the leptonic and the hadronic 1-prong tau decay modes.

MSSM corrections to the top-antitop quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron

We study the effects of the complete supersymmetric QCD and electroweak one-loop corrections to the ttbar forward-backward asymmetry at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We work in the complex Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), only restricted by the condition of minimal flavor violation (MFV). We perform a comprehensive scan over the relevant parameter space of the complex MFV-MSSM and determine the maximal possible contributions of these MSSM loop corrections to the forward-backward asymmetry in the ttbar center-of-mass frame.

Top-Quark Charge Asymmetry with a Jet Handle

Pairs of top and antitop quarks are produced at the LHC to a large extent in association with a hard jet. We investigate the charge asymmetry in top pair + jet production in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and with additional massive color-octet vector bosons. The total charge asymmetry at the LHC is suppressed by the large charge-symmetric background from gluon-gluon fusion. We show to what extent the asymmetry can be enhanced by suitable phase space cuts and, in particular, elaborate on the kinematics of the hard jet in the top pair + jet final state. We demonstrate that in QCD, the asymmetry amounts to -1.5% for central jets without an excessive reduction of the cross section. By applying additional kinematical cuts, the asymmetry can be enhanced to -4%, but at the cost of a strong reduction of the cross section. Massive color-octet states can generate sizeable effects in top pair + jet production, both on the charge asymmetry and on the cross section. The charge asymmetry probes both vector and axial-vector couplings to quarks. We show that massive color octets can generate asymmetries up to +-10% for moderate and up to +-30% for strong kinematical cuts to be used in experimental analyses at the LHC. Jet kinematics can be used to obtain further information about the nature of the couplings and thereby to discriminate between different models.

Heavy-flavor effects in soft gluon resummation for electroweak boson production at hadron colliders

We evaluate the impact of heavy-quark masses on transverse momentum distributions of W, Z, and supersymmetric neutral Higgs bosons at the Tevatron and LHC. The masses of charm and bottom quarks act as non-negligible momentum scales at small transverse momentum, and affect resummation of soft and collinear radiation. We point out inconsistencies in the treatment of heavy-flavor channels at small transverse momentum in massless factorization schemes, and formulate small transverse momentum resummation in a general-mass variable flavor number factorization scheme. The improved treatment of the quark mass dependence leads to non-negligible effects in precision measurements of the W boson mass at the LHC, and may cause observable modifications in production of Higgs bosons and other particles in heavy-quark scattering.

q_T Uncertainties for W and Z Production

Analysis of semi-inclusive DIS hadroproduction suggests broadening of transverse momentum distributions at small x below 1E-3 ~ 1E-2 which can be modeled in the Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism by a modification of impact parameter dependent parton densities. We investigate these consequences for the production of electroweak bosons at the Tevatron and the LHC. If substantial small-x broadening is observed in forward Z boson production in the Tevatron Run-2, it will strongly affect the predicted q_T distributions for W and Z boson production at the LHC.

Gluino Pair Production at Linear e^+e^- Colliders

We study the potential of high-energy linear $e^+e^-$ colliders for the production of gluino pairs within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). In this model, the process $e^+e^-\to\tilde{g}\tilde{g}$ is mediated by quark/squark loops, dominantly of the third generation, where the mixing of left- and right-handed states can become large. Taking into account realistic beam polarization effects, photon and $Z^0$-boson exchange, and current mass exclusion limits, we scan the MSSM parameter space for various $e^+e^-$ center-of-mass energies to determine the regions, where gluino production should be visible.
