Distributions defined by q-supernomials, fusion products, and Demazure modules

We prove asymptotic normality of the distributions defined by q-supernomials, which implies asymptotic normality of the distributions given by the central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion modules of the current algebra of sl2. The limit is taken over linearly scaled fusion powers of a fixed collection of irreducible representations. This includes as special instances all Demazure modules of the affine Kac-Moody algebra associated to sl2. Along with an available complementary result on the asymptotic normality of the basic specialization of graded tensors of the type A standard representation, our result is a central limit theorem for a serious class of graded tensors. It therefore serves as an indication towards universal behavior: The central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion and, in particular, Demazure modules behave asymptotically normal, as the number of fusions scale linearly in an asymptotic parameter, N say.

Eigenvalue Distributions of Reduced Density Matrices

Given a random quantum state of multiple distinguishable or indistinguishable particles, we provide an effective method, rooted in symplectic geometry, to compute the joint probability distribution of the eigenvalues of its one-body reduced density matrices. As a corollary, by taking the distribution's support, which is a convex moment polytope, we recover a complete solution to the one-body quantum marginal problem. We obtain the probability distribution by reducing to the corresponding distribution of diagonal entries (i.e., to the quantitative version of a classical marginal problem), which is then determined algorithmically. This reduction applies more generally to symplectic geometry, relating invariant measures for the coadjoint action of a compact Lie group to their projections onto a Cartan subalgebra, and can also be quantized to provide an efficient algorithm for computing bounded height Kronecker and plethysm coefficients.

The number of flags in finite vector spaces: Asymptotic normality and Mahonian statistics

We study the generalized Galois numbers which count flags of length r in N-dimensional vector spaces over finite fields. We prove that the coefficients of those polynomials are asymptotically Gaussian normally distributed as N becomes large. Furthermore, we interpret the generalized Galois numbers as weighted inversion statistics on the descent classes of the symmetric group on N elements and identify their asymptotic limit as the Mahonian inversion statistic when r approaches infinity. Finally, we apply our statements to derive further statistical aspects of generalized Rogers-Szegoe polynomials, re-interpret the asymptotic behavior of linear q-ary codes and characters of the symmetric group acting on subspaces over finite fields, and discuss implications for affine Demazure modules and joint probability generating functions of descent-inversion statistics.

Asymptotics of generalized Galois numbers via affine Kac-Moody algebras

Generalized Galois numbers count the number of flags in vector spaces over finite fields. Asymptotically, as the dimension of the vector space becomes large, we give their exponential growth and determine their initial values. The initial values are expressed analytically in terms of theta functions and Euler's generating function for the partition numbers. Our asymptotic enumeration method is based on a Demazure module limit construction for integrable highest weight representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras. For the classical Galois numbers, that count the number of subspaces in vector spaces over finite fields, the theta functions are Jacobi theta functions. We apply our findings to the asymptotic number of q-ary codes, and conclude with some final remarks about possible future research concerning asymptotic enumerations via limit constructions for affine Kac-Moody algebras.

A closed character formula for symmetric powers of irreducible representations

We prove a closed character formula for the symmetric powers $S^N V(λ)$ of a fixed irreducible representation $V(λ)$ of a complex semi-simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ by means of partial fraction decomposition. The formula involves rational functions in rank of $\mathfrak{g}$ many variables which are easier to determine than the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ themselves. We compute those rational functions in some interesting cases. Furthermore, we introduce a residue-type generating function for the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ and explain the connections between our character formula, vector partition functions and iterated partial fraction decomposition.

Deformations along subsheaves

Let f : Y -> X be a morphism of complex projective manifolds, and let F be a subsheaf of the tangent bundle which is closed under the Lie bracket, but not necessarily a foliation. This short paper contains an elementary and very geometric argument to show that all obstructions to deforming the morphism f along the sheaf F lie in the first cohomology group H^1(Y, F_Y) of the sheaf F_Y, which is the image of f^*(F) in f^*(T_X) under the pull-back of the inclusion map. Special cases of this result include the theory of deformation along a (possibly singular) foliation, logarithmic deformation theory and deformations with fixed points.
