Equivariant degenerations of spherical modules: part II

We determine, under a certain assumption, the Alexeev-Brion moduli scheme M_S of affine spherical G-varieties with a prescribed weight monoid S. In [ arXiv:1008.0911 ] we showed that if G is a connected complex reductive group of type A and S is the weight monoid of a spherical G-module, then M_S is an affine space. Here we prove that this remains true without any restriction on the type of G.

Bounds for the Betti numbers of successive stellar subdivisions of a simplex

We give a bound for the Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a stellar subdivision of a Gorenstein* simplicial complex by applying unprojection theory. From this we derive a bound for the Betti numbers of iterated stellar subdivisions of the boundary complex of a simplex. The bound depends only on the number of subdivisions, and we construct examples which prove that it is sharp.

Stellar subdivisions and Stanley-Reisner rings of Gorenstein complexes

Unprojection theory aims to analyze and construct complicated commutative rings in terms of simpler ones. Our main result is that, on the algebraic level of Stanley-Reisner rings, stellar subdivisions of non-acyclic Gorenstein simplicial complexes correspond to unprojections of type Kustin-Miller. As an application, we inductively calculate the minimal graded free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to stacked polytopes, recovering results of Terai, Hibi, Herzog and Li Marzi.

Equivariant degenerations of spherical modules for groups of type A

Let G be a complex reductive algebraic group. Fix a Borel subgroup B of G, with unipotent radical U, and a maximal torus T in B with character group X(T). Let S be a submonoid of X(T) generated by finitely many dominant weights. V. Alexeev and M. Brion introduced a moduli scheme M_S which classifies pairs (X,f) where X is an affine G-variety and f is a T-equivariant isomorphism between the categorical quotient of X by U and the toric variety determined by S. In this paper, we prove that M_S is isomorphic to an affine space when S is the weight monoid of a spherical G-module with G of type A.

Implementing the Kustin-Miller complex construction

The Kustin-Miller complex construction, due to A. Kustin and M. Miller, can be applied to a pair of resolutions of Gorenstein rings with certain properties to obtain a new Gorenstein ring and a resolution of it. It gives a tool to construct and analyze Gorenstein rings of high codimension. We describe the Kustin-Miller complex and its implementation in the Macaulay2 package KustinMiller, and explain how it can be applied to explicit examples.

On the structure of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to cyclic polytopes

We study the structure of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to cyclic polytopes, using ideas from unprojection theory. Consider the boundary simplicial complex Delta(d,m) of the d-dimensional cyclic polytope with m vertices. We show how to express the Stanley-Reisner ring of Delta(d,m+1) in terms of the Stanley-Reisner rings of Delta(d,m) and Delta(d-2,m-1). As an application, we use the Kustin-Miller complex construction to identify the minimal graded free resolutions of these rings. In particular, we recover results of Schenzel, Terai and Hibi about their graded Betti numbers.

Birational modifications of surfaces via unprojections

We describe elementary transformations between minimal models of rational surfaces in terms of unprojections. These do not fit into the framework of Kustin-Miller unprojections as introduced by Papadakis and Reid, since we have to leave the world of projectively Gorenstein varieties. Also, our unprojections do not depend on the choice of the unprojection locus only, but need extra data corresponding to the choice of a divisor on this unprojection locus.

Parallel Kustin--Miller unprojection with an application to Calabi--Yau geometry

Kustin--Miller unprojection constructs more complicated Gorenstein rings from simpler ones. Geometrically, it inverts certain projections, and appears in the constructions of explicit birational geometry. However, it is often desirable to perform not only one but a series of unprojections. The main aim of the present paper is to develop a theory, which we call parallel Kustin--Miller unprojection, that applies when all the unprojection ideals of a series of unprojections correspond to ideals already present in the initial ring. As an application of the theory, we explicitly construct 7 families of Calabi--Yau 3-folds of high codimensions.
