Deformations of rational curves in positive characteristic

We study deformations of rational curves and their singularities in positive characteristic. We use this to prove that if a smooth and proper surface in positive characteristic pp is dominated by a family of rational curves such that one member has all δδ-invariants (resp. Jacobian numbers) strictly less than (p−1)/2(p-1)/2 (resp. pp), then the surface has negative Kodaira dimension. We also prove similar, but weaker results hold for higher dimensional varieties. Moreover, we show by example that our result is in some sense optimal. On our way, we obtain a sufficient criterion in terms of Jacobian numbers for the normalization of a curve over an imperfect field to be smooth.

Algebraic Surfaces in Positive Characteristic

These notes are an introduction to and an overview of the theory of algebraic surfaces over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic. After some background in characteristic-p-geometry, we sketch the Kodaira-Enriques classification. Next, we turn to more special characteristic-p topics, and end by lifting results and applications to characteristic zero. We assume that the reader has a background in complex geometry and has seen the Kodaira-Enriques classification of complex surfaces before.

On the Birational Nature of Lifting

Let XX and YY be proper birational varieties, say with only rational double points over a perfect field kk of positive characteristic. If XX lifts to Wn(k)W_n(k), is it true that YY has the same lifting property? This is true for smooth surfaces, but we show by example that this is false for smooth varieties in higher dimension, and for surfaces with canonical singularities. We also answer a stacky analogue of this question: given a canonical surface XX with minimal resolution YY and stacky resolution X\mathcal{X}, we characterize when liftability of YY is equivalent to that of X\mathcal{X}. The main input for our results is a study of how the deformation functor of a canonical surface singularity compares with the deformation functor of its minimal resolution. This extends work of Burns and Wahl to positive characteristic. As a byproduct, we show that Tjurina's vanishing result fails for every canonical surface singularity in every positive characteristic.

The Canonical Map and Horikawa Surfaces in Positive Characteristic

We extend fundamental inequalities related to the canonical map of surfaces of general type to positive characteristic. Next, we classify surfaces on the Noether lines, i.e., even and odd Horikawa surfaces, in positive characteristic. We describe their moduli spaces and the subspaces formed by surfaces whose canonical maps are inseparable. Moreover, we compute their Betti-, deRham- and crystalline cohomology. Finally, we prove lifting to characteristic zero and show that the moduli spaces are topologically flat over the integers.

The p-torsion subgroup scheme of an elliptic curve

Let kk be a field of positive characteristic pp. Question: Does every twisted form of μpμ_p over kk occur as subgroup scheme of an elliptic curve over kk? We show that this is true for most finite fields, for local fields and for fields of characteristic p≤11p\leq11. However, it is false in general for fields of characteristic p≥13p\geq13, which implies that there are also pp-divisible and formal groups of height one over such fields that do not arise from elliptic curves. It also implies that the Hasse invariant does not obey the Hasse principle. Moreover, we also analyse twisted forms of pp-torsion subgroup schemes of ordinary elliptic curves and the analogous questions for supersingular curves.

Birational modifications of surfaces via unprojections

We describe elementary transformations between minimal models of rational surfaces in terms of unprojections. These do not fit into the framework of Kustin-Miller unprojections as introduced by Papadakis and Reid, since we have to leave the world of projectively Gorenstein varieties. Also, our unprojections do not depend on the choice of the unprojection locus only, but need extra data corresponding to the choice of a divisor on this unprojection locus.
