Daugavet- and delta-points in Banach spaces with unconditional bases

We study the existence of Daugavet- and delta-points in the unit sphere of Banach spaces with a $1$-unconditional basis. A norm one element $x$ in a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point) if every element in the unit ball (resp. $x$ itself) is in the closed convex hull of unit ball elements that are almost at distance $2$ from $x$. A Banach space has the Daugavet property (resp. diametral local diameter two property) if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point). It is well-known that a Banach space with the Daugavet property does not have an unconditional basis. Similarly spaces with the diametral local diameter two property do not have an unconditional basis with suppression unconditional constant strictly less than $2$. We show that no Banach space with a subsymmetric basis can have delta-points. In contrast we construct a Banach space with a $1$-unconditional basis with delta-points, but with no Daugavet-points, and a Banach space with a $1$-unconditional basis with a unit ball in which the Daugavet-points are weakly dense.

Approximation of norms on Banach spaces

Relatively recently it was proved that if $Γ$ is an arbitrary set, then any equivalent norm on $c_0(Γ)$ can be approximated uniformly on bounded sets by polyhedral norms and $C^\infty$ smooth norms, with arbitrary precision. We extend this result to more classes of spaces having uncountable symmetric bases, such as preduals of the `discrete' Lorentz spaces $d(w,1,Γ)$, and certain symmetric Nakano spaces and Orlicz spaces. We also show that, given an arbitrary ordinal number $α$, there exists a scattered compact space $K$ having Cantor-Bendixson height at least $α$, such that every equivalent norm on $C(K)$ can be approximated as above.

Polyhedrality and decomposition

The aim of this note is to present two results that make the task of finding equivalent polyhedral norms on certain Banach spaces, having either a Schauder basis or an uncountable unconditional basis, easier and more transparent. The hypotheses of both results are based on decomposing the unit sphere of a Banach space into countably many pieces, such that each one satisfies certain properties. Some examples of spaces having equivalent polyhedral norms are given.

Diameter two properties, convexity and smoothness

We study smoothness and strict convexity of (the bidual) of Banach spaces in the presence of diameter 2 properties. We prove that the strong diameter 2 property prevents the bidual from being strictly convex and being smooth, and we initiate the investigation whether the same is true for the (local) diameter 2 property. We also give characterizations of the following property for a Banach space $X$: "For every slice $S$ of $B_X$ and every norm-one element $x$ in $S$, there is a point $y\in S$ in distance as close to 2 as we want." Spaces with this property are shown to have non-smooth bidual.

Diameter 2 properties and convexity

We present an equivalent midpoint locally uniformly rotund (MLUR) renorming $X$ of $C[0,1]$ on which every weakly compact projection $P$ satisfies the equation $\|I-P\| = 1+\|P\|$ ($I$ is the identity operator on $X$). As a consequence we obtain an MLUR space $X$ with the properties D2P, that every non-empty relatively weakly open subset of its unit ball $B_X$ has diameter 2, and the LD2P+, that for every slice of $B_X$ and every norm 1 element $x$ inside the slice there is another element $y$ inside the slice of distance as close to 2 from $x$ as desired. An example of an MLUR space with the D2P, the LD2P+, and with convex combinations of slices of arbitrary small diameter is also given.

Strictly convex norms and topology

We introduce a new topological property called (*) and the corresponding class of topological spaces, which includes spaces with $G_δ$-diagonals and Gruenhage spaces. Using (*), we characterise those Banach spaces which admit equivalent strictly convex norms, and give an internal topological characterisation of those scattered compact spaces $K$, for which the dual Banach space $C(K)^*$ admits an equivalent strictly convex dual norm. We establish some relationships between (*) and other topological concepts, and the position of several well-known examples in this context. For instance, we show that $C(\mathcal{K})^*$ admits an equivalent strictly convex dual norm, where $\mathcal{K}$ is Kunen's compact space. Also, under the continuum hypothesis CH, we give an example of a compact scattered non-Gruenhage space having (*).
