Non-asymptotic $\ell_1$ spaces with unique $\ell_1$ asymptotic model

A recent result of Freeman, Odell, Sari, and Zheng states that whenever a separable Banach space not containing $\ell_1$ has the property that all asymptotic models generated by weakly null sequences are equivalent to the unit vector basis of $c_0$ then the space is Asymptotic $c_0$. We show that if we replace $c_0$ with $\ell_1$ then this result is no longer true. Moreover, a stronger result of B. Maurey - H. P. Rosenthal type is presented, namely, there exists a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis admitting $\ell_1$ as a unique asymptotic model whereas any subsequence of the basis generates a non-Asymptotic $\ell_1$ subspace.

A study of conditional spreading sequences

It is shown that every conditional spreading sequence can be decomposed into two well behaved parts, one being unconditional and the other being convex block homogeneous, i.e. equivalent to its convex block sequences. This decomposition is then used to prove several results concerning the structure of spaces with conditional spreading bases as well as results in the theory of conditional spreading models. Among other things, it is shown that the space $C(ω^ω)$ is universal for all spreading models, i.e., it admits all spreading sequences, both conditional and unconditional, as spreading models. Moreover, every conditional spreading sequence is generated as a spreading model by a sequence in a space that is quasi-reflexive of order one.

The scalar-plus-compact property in spaces without reflexive subspaces

A hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_{\mathfrak{nr}}$ is constructed that is the first known example of a $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space not containing $c_0$, $\ell_1$, or reflexive subspaces and answers a question posed by J. Bourgain. Moreover, the space $\mathfrak{X}_{\mathfrak{nr}}$ satisfies the "scalar-plus-compact" property and it is the first known space without reflexive subspaces having this property. It is constructed using the Bourgain-Delbaen method in combination with a recent version of saturation under constraints in a mixed-Tsirelson setting. As a result, the space $\mathfrak{X}_{\mathfrak{nr}}$ has a shrinking finite dimensional decomposition and does not contain a boundedly complete sequence.

A dual method of constructing hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces

A new method of defining hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces is presented. This method provides a unified approach for constructing reflexive HI spaces and also HI spaces with no reflexive subspace. All the spaces presented here satisfy the property that the composition of any two strictly singular operators is a compact one. This yields the first known example of a Banach space with no reflexive subspace such that every operator has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace.

$α$-Large Families and Applications to Banach Space Theory

The notion of $α$-large families of finite subsets of an infinite set is defined for every countable ordinal number $α$, extending the known notion of large families. The definition of the $α$-large families is based on the transfinite hierarchy of the Schreier families $\mathcal{S}_α, α<ω_1$. We prove the existence of such families on the cardinal number $2^{\aleph_0}$ and we study their properties. As an application, based on those families we construct a reflexive space $\mathfrak{X}_{2^{\aleph_0}}^α$, $α<ω_1$ with density the continuum, such that every bounded non norm convergent sequence $\{x_k\}_k$ has a subsequence generating $\ell_1^α$ as a spreading model.

A hereditarily indecomposable Banach space with rich spreading model structure

We present a reflexive Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{usm}}}$ which is Hereditarily Indecomposable and satisfies the following properties. In every subspace $Y$ of $\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{usm}}}$ there exists a weakly null normalized sequence $\{y_n\}_n$, such that every subsymmetric sequence $\{z_n\}_n$ is isomorphically generated as a spreading model of a subsequence of $\{y_n\}_n$. Also, in every block subspace $Y$ of $\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{usm}}}$ there exists a seminormalized block sequence $\{z_n\}$ and $T:\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{usm}}}\rightarrow\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{usm}}}$ an isomorphism such that for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$ $T(z_{2n-1}) = z_{2n}$. Thus the space is an example of an HI space which is not tight by range in a strong sense.

On spaces admitting no $\ell_p$ or $c_0$ spreading model

It is shown that for each separable Banach space $X$ not admitting $\ell_1$ as a spreading model there is a space $Y$ having $X$ as a quotient and not admitting any $\ell_p$ for $1 \leq p < \infty$ or $c_0$ as a spreading model. We also include the solution to a question of W.B. Johnson and H.P. Rosenthal on the existence of a separable space not admitting as a quotient any space with separable dual.

A $c_0$ saturated Banach space with tight structure

It is shown that variants of the HI methods could yield objects closely connected to the classical Banach spaces. Thus we present a new $c_0$ saturated space, denoted as $\mathfrak{X}_0$, with rather tight structure. The space $\mathfrak{X}_0$ is not embedded into a space with an unconditional basis and its complemented subspaces have the following structure. Everyone is either of type I, namely, contains an isomorph of $\mathfrak{X}_0$ itself or else is isomorphic to a subspace of $c_0$ (type II). Furthermore for any analytic decomposition of $\mathfrak{X}_0$ into two subspaces one is of type I and the other is of type II. The operators of $\mathfrak{X}_0$ share common features with those of HI spaces.

The cofinal property of the Reflexive Indecomposable Banach spaces

It is shown that every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive Hereditarily Indecomposable space, which yields that every separable reflexive Banach is isomorphic to a subspace of a reflexive Indecomposable space. Furthermore, every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive complementably $\ell_p$ saturated space with $1<p<\infty$ and of a $c_0$ saturated space.

Modified mixed Tsirelson spaces

We study the modified and boundedly modified mixed Tsirelson spaces $T_M[({\cal F}_{k_n},θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty }]$ and $T_{M(s)}[({\cal F}_{k_n},θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty }]$ respectively, defined by a subsequence $({\cal F}_{k_n})$ of the sequence of Schreier families $({\cal F}_n)$. These are reflexive asymptotic $\ell_1$ spaces with an unconditio- nal basis $(e_i)_i$ having the property that every sequence $\{ x_i\}_{i=1}^n$ of normalized disjointly supported vectors contained in $\langle e_i\rangle_{i=n}^{\infty }$ is equivalent to the basis of $\ell_1^n$. We show that if $\limθ_n^{1/n}=1$ then the space $T[({\cal F}_n,θ_n) _{n=1}^{\infty }]$ and its modified variations are totally incomparable by proving that $c_0$ is finitely disjointly representable in every block subspace of $T[({\cal F}_n, θ_n)_{n=1}^{\infty }]$. Next, we present an example of a boundedly modified mixed Tsirelson space $X_{M(1),u}$ which is arbitrarily distortable. Finally, we construct a variation of the space $X_{M(1),u}$ which is hereditarily indecomposable.

Banach Spaces Of The Type Of Tsirelson

To any pair ( M , theta ) where M is a family of finite subsets of N compact in the pointwise topology, and 0<theta < 1 , we associate a Tsirelson-type Banach space T_M^theta . It is shown that if the Cantor-Bendixson index of M is greater than n and theta >{1/n} then T_M^theta is reflexive. Moreover, if the Cantor-Bendixson index of M is greater than omega then T_M^theta does not contain any l^p, while if the Cantor-Bendixson index of M is finite thenT_M^theta contains some l^p or c_o . In particular, if M ={ A subset N : |A| leq n } and {1/n}<theta <1 then T_M^theta is isomorphic to some l^p .

Weakly Lindelof determined Banach spaces not containing $\ell^1(N)$

The class of countably intersected families of sets is defined. For any such family we define a Banach space not containing $\ell^{1}(\NN )$. Thus we obtain counterexamples to certain questions related to the heredity problem for W.C.G. Banach spaces. Among them we give a subspace of a W.C.G. Banach space not containing $\ell^{1}(\NN )$ and not being itself a W.C.G. space.
