Berry phases, wormholes and factorization in AdS/CFT

For two-dimensional holographic CFTs, we demonstrate the role of Berry phases for relating the non-factorization of the Hilbert space to the presence of wormholes. The wormholes are characterized by a non-exact symplectic form that gives rise to the Berry phase. For wormholes connecting two spacelike regions in gravitational spacetimes, we find that the non-exactness is linked to a variable appearing in the phase space of the boundary CFT. This variable corresponds to a loop integral in the bulk. Through this loop integral, non-factorization becomes apparent in the dual entangled CFTs. Furthermore, we classify Berry phases in holographic CFTs based on the type of dual bulk diffeomorphism involved. We distinguish between Virasoro, gauge and modular Berry phases, each corresponding to a spacetime wormhole geometry in the bulk. Using kinematic space, we extend a relation between the modular Hamiltonian and the Berry curvature to the finite temperature case. We find that the Berry curvature, given by the Crofton form, characterizes the topological transition of the entanglement entropy in presence of a black hole.

Complexity as a holographic probe of strong cosmic censorship

Based on reasonable assumptions, we propose a new expression for Lloyd's bound, which confines the complexity growth of charged black holes. We then revisit holographic complexity for charged black branes in the presence of a finite cutoff. Using the proposed Lloyd's bound we find a relation between the UV and the behind the horizon cutoff. This is found to be consistent with the factorization of the partition function at leading order in large N. We argue that the result may be thought of as a holographic realization of strong cosmic censorship.

Complexity via Replica Trick

We consider the complexity of a single-sided AdS black hole as modelled by an end-of-the-world brane. In addition, we present multi-boundary partition functions and matter correlation functions for such a setting. We compute the complexity using a modified replica trick corresponding to the "quenched geodesic length" in JT gravity. The late-time behaviour of complexity shows a saturation to a constant value of order $e^{S_0}$ following a period of linear growth. Furthermore, we show that our approach leads to an improved result for the variance of complexity, namely it being time-independent at late times. We conclude by commenting on the introduction of dynamical end-of-the-world branes.

Geometric phases distinguish entangled states in wormhole quantum mechanics

We establish a relation between entanglement in simple quantum mechanical qubit systems and in wormhole physics as considered in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that in both cases, states with the same entanglement structure, indistinguishable by any local measurement, nevertheless are characterized by a different Berry phase. This feature is experimentally accessible in coupled qubit systems where states with different Berry phase are related by unitary transformations. In the wormhole case, these transformations are identified with a time evolution of one of the two throats.

Handling Missingness Value on Jointly Measured Time-Course and Time-to-event Data

Joint modeling technique is a recent advancement in effectively analyzing the longitudinal history of patients with the occurrence of an event of interest attached to it. This procedure is successfully implemented in biomarker studies to examine parents with the occurrence of tumor. One of the typical problem that influences the necessary inference is the presence of missing values in the longitudinal responses as well as in covariates. The occurrence of missingness is very common due to the dropout of patients from the study. This article presents an effective and detailed way to handle the missing values in the covariates and response variable. This study discusses the effect of different multiple imputation techniques on the inferences of joint modeling implemented on imputed datasets. A simulation study is carried out to replicate the complex data structures and conveniently perform our analysis to show its efficacy in terms of parameter estimation. This analysis is further illustrated with the longitudinal and survival outcomes of biomarkers' study by assessing proper codes in R programming language.

Classification Algorithm for High Dimensional Protein Markers in Time-course Data

Identification of biomarkers is an emerging area in Oncology. In this article, we develop an efficient statistical procedure for classification of protein markers according to their effect on cancer progression. A high-dimensional time-course dataset of protein markers for 80 patients motivates us for developing the model. We obtain the optimal threshold values for markers using Cox proportional hazard model. The optimal threshold value is defined as a level of a marker having maximum impact on cancer progression. The classification was validated by comparing random components using both proportional hazard and accelerated failure time frailty models. The study elucidates the application of two separate joint modeling techniques using auto regressive-type model and mixed effect model for time-course data and proportional hazard model for survival data with proper utilization of Bayesian methodology. Also, a prognostic score has been developed on the basis of few selected genes with application on patients. The complete analysis is performed by R programming code. This study facilitates to identify relevant biomarkers from a set of markers.

Dark bubbles: decorating the wall

Motivated by the difficulty of constructing de Sitter vacua in string theory, a new approach was proposed in arXiv:1807.01570 and arXiv:1907.04268, where four dimensional de Sitter space was realized as the effective cosmology, with matter and radiation, on an expanding spherical bubble that mediates the decay of non supersymmetric $AdS_5$ to a more stable $AdS_5$ in string theory. In this third installment, we further expand on this scenario by considering the backreaction of matter in the bulk and on the brane in terms of how the brane bends. We compute the back reacted metric on the bent brane as well as in the five dimensional bulk. To further illuminate the effect of brane-bending, we compare our results with an explicit computation of the five dimensional graviton propagator using a holographic prescription. Finally we comment on a possible localization of four dimensional gravity in our model using two colliding branes.

A Bound on Thermal Relativistic Correlators at Large Spacelike Momenta

We consider thermal Wightman correlators in a relativistic quantum field theory in the limit where the spatial momenta of the insertions become large while their frequencies stay fixed. We show that, in this limit, the size of these correlators is bounded by $e^{-βR}$, where $R$ is the radius of the smallest sphere that contains the polygon formed by the momenta. We show that perturbative quantum field theories can saturate this bound through suitably high-order loop diagrams. We also consider holographic theories in $d$-spacetime dimensions, where we show that the leading two-point function of generalized free-fields saturates the bound in $d = 2$ and is below the bound for $d > 2$. We briefly discuss interactions in holographic theories and conclude with a discussion of several open problems.

A toy model of black hole complementarity

We consider the algebra of simple operators defined in a time band in a CFT with a holographic dual. When the band is smaller than the light crossing time of AdS, an entire causal diamond in the center of AdS is separated from the band by a horizon. We show that this algebra obeys a version of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem: the action of the algebra on the CFT vacuum can approximate any low energy state in the CFT arbitrarily well, but no operator within the algebra can exactly annihilate the vacuum. We show how to relate local excitations in the complement of the central diamond to simple operators in the band. Local excitations within the diamond are invisible to the algebra of simple operators in the band by causality, but can be related to complicated operators called "precursors". We use the Reeh-Schlieder theorem to write down a simple and explicit formula for these precursors on the boundary. We comment on the implications of our results for black hole complementarity and the emergence of bulk locality from the boundary.

Time-dependence of the holographic spectral function: Diverse routes to thermalisation

We develop a new method for computing the holographic retarded propagator in generic (non-)equilibrium states using the state/geometry map. We check that our method reproduces the thermal spectral function given by the Son-Starinets prescription. The time-dependence of the spectral function of a relevant scalar operator is studied in a class of non-equilibrium states. The latter are represented by AdS-Vaidya geometries with an arbitrary parameter characterising the timescale for the dual state to transit from an initial thermal equilibrium to another due to a homogeneous quench. For long quench duration, the spectral function indeed follows the thermal form at the instantaneous effective temperature adiabatically, although with a slight initial time delay and a bit premature thermalisation. At shorter quench durations, several new non-adiabatic features appear: (i) time-dependence of the spectral function is seen much before than that in the effective temperature (advanced time-dependence), (ii) a big transfer of spectral weight to frequencies greater than the initial temperature occurs at an intermediate time (kink formation) and (iii) new peaks with decreasing amplitudes but in greater numbers appear even after the effective temperature has stabilised (persistent oscillations). We find four broad routes to thermalisation for lower values of spatial momenta. At higher values of spatial momenta, kink formations and persistent oscillations are suppressed, and thermalisation time decreases. The general thermalisation pattern is globally top-down, but a closer look reveals complexities.

A note on AdS cosmology and gauge theory correlator

Using AdS/CFT prescription, we compute two point Yang-Mills correlator on a constant time slice for the Kasner background. Pushing the surface close to the initial singularity, we find, in some cases, the correlator does not develop pole. This is consistent with the observations made in a recent work. We further numerically calculate similar correlator where the bulk is a Kasner AdS soliton. We find that the qualitative behaviour of the correlator remains unchanged.

Non-supersymmetric Microstates of the MSW System

We present an analysis parallel to that of Giusto, Ross, and Saxena (arXiv:0708.3845) and construct a discrete family of non-supersymmetric microstate geometries of the Maldacena-Strominger-Witten system. The supergravity configuration in which we look for the smooth microstates is constructed using SO(4,4) dualities applied to an appropriate seed solution. The SO(4,4) approach offers certain technical advantages. Our microstate solutions are smooth in five dimensions, as opposed to all previously known non-supersymmetric microstates with AdS3 cores, which are smooth only in six dimensions. The decoupled geometries for our microstates are related to global AdS3 x S2 by spectral flows.

Anisotropic branes

We present a class of anisotropic brane configurations which shows BKL oscillations near their cosmological singularities. Near horizon limits of these solutions represent Kasner space embedded in AdS background. Dynamical probe branes in these geometries inherit anisotropies from the background. Amusingly, for a probe M5 brane, we find that there exists a parameter region where three of its world-volume directions expand while the rest contract.

Generalized Holographic Cosmology

We consider general black hole solutions in five-dimensional spacetime in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. We obtain a cosmological evolution via the gravity/gauge theory duality (holography) by defining appropriate boundary conditions on a four-dimensional boundary hypersurface. The standard counterterms are shown to renormalize the bare parameters of the system (the four-dimensional Newton's constant and cosmological constant). We discuss the thermodynamics of cosmological evolution and present various examples. The standard brane-world scenarios are shown to be special cases of our holographic construction.

The holographic spectral function in non-equilibrium states

We develop holographic prescriptions for obtaining spectral functions in non-equilibrium states and space-time dependent non-equilibrium shifts in the energy and spin of quasi-particle like excitations. We reproduce strongly coupled versions of aspects of non-equilibrium dynamics of Fermi surfaces in Landau's Fermi-liquid theory. We find that the incoming wave boundary condition at the horizon does not suffice to obtain a well-defined perturbative expansion for non-equilibrium observables. Our prescription, based on analysis of regularity at the horizon, allows such a perturbative expansion to be achieved nevertheless and can be precisely formulated in a universal manner independent of the non-equilibrium state, provided the state thermalizes. We also find that the non-equilibrium spectral function furnishes information about the relaxation modes of the system. Along the way, we argue that in a typical non-supersymmetric theory with a gravity dual, there may exist a window of temperature and chemical potential at large N, in which a generic non-equilibrium state can be characterized by just a finitely few operators with low scaling dimensions, even far away from the hydrodynamic limit.

Black hole phase transitions via Bragg-Williams

We argue that a convenient way to analyze instabilities of black holes in AdS space is via Bragg-Williams construction of a free energy function. Starting with a pedagogical review of this construction in condensed matter systems and also its implementation to Hawking-Page transition, we study instabilities associated with hairy black holes and also with the $R$-charged black holes. For the hairy black holes, an analysis of thermal quench is presented.

A Note on Charged Black Holes in AdS space and the Dual Gauge Theories

We study the thermodynamics and the phase structures of Reissner-Nordstrom and Born-Infeld black holes in AdS space by constructing ``off-shell'' free energies using thermodynamic quantities derived directly from the action. We then use these results to propose ``off-shell'' effective potentials for the respective boundary gauge theories. The saddle points of the potentials describe all the equilibrium phases of the gauge theories.
