Sketching 1-D stable manifolds of 2-D maps without the inverse

Saddle fixed points are the centerpieces of complicated dynamics in a system. The one-dimensional stable and unstable manifolds of these saddle-points are crucial to understanding the dynamics of such systems. While the problem of sketching the unstable manifold is simple, plotting the stable manifold is not as easy. Several algorithms exist to compute the stable manifold of saddle-points, but they have their limitations, especially when the system is not invertible. In this paper, we present a new algorithm to compute the stable manifold of 2-dimensional systems which can also be used for non-invertible systems. After outlining the logic of the algorithm, we demonstrate the output of the algorithm on several examples.

Limiting distribution of periodic position measurements of a quantum harmonic oscillator

We consider a particle in harmonic oscillator potential, whose position is periodically measured with an instrument of finite precision. We show that the distribution of the measured positions tends to a limiting distribution when the number of measurements tends to infinity. We derive the expression for the limiting position distribution and validate it with numerical simulation.

Steady State Of Random Dynamical Systems

Random dynamical systems (RDS) evolve by a dynamical rule chosen independently with a certain probability, from a given set of deterministic rules. These dynamical systems in an interval reach a steady state with a unique well-defined probability density only under certain conditions, namely Pelikan's criterion. We investigate and characterize the steady state of a bounded RDS when Pelikan's criterion breaks down. In this regime, the system is attracted to a common fixed point (CFP) of all the maps, which is attractive for at least one of the constituent mapping functions. If there are many such fixed points, the initial density is shared among the CFPs; we provide a mapping of this problem with the well known hitting problem of random walks and find the relative weights at different CFPs. The weights depend upon the initial distribution.

Shilnikov-type Dynamics in Three-Dimensional Piecewise Smooth Maps

We show the existence of Shilnikov-type dynamics and bifurcation behaviour in general discrete three-dimensional piecewise smooth maps and give analytical results for the occurence of such dynamical behaviour. Our main example in fact shows a `two-sided' Shilnikov dynamics, i.e. simultaneous looping and homoclinic intersection of the one-dimensional eigenmanfolds of fixed points on both sides of the border. We also present two complementary methods to analyse the return time of an orbit to the border: one based on recursion and another based on complex interpolation.

Existence and Stability of Periodic Orbits in $N$-Dimensional Piecewise Linear Continuous Maps

Piecewise smooth maps are known to exhibit a wide range of dynamical features including numerous types of periodic orbits. Predicting regions in parameter space where such periodic orbits might occur and determining their stability is crucial to characterize the dynamics of the system. However, obtaining the conditions of existence and stability of these periodic orbits generally use brute force methods which require successive application of the iterative map on a starting point. In this article, we propose a faster and more elegant way of obtaining those conditions without iterating the complete map. The method revolves around direct computation of higher powers of matrices without computing the lower ones and is applicable on any dimension of the phase space. In the later part of the article, we compare the speed of the proposed method with the other popular algorithms which shows the effectiveness of the proposed method in higher dimensions. We also illustrate the use of this method in computing the regions of existence and stability of a particular class of periodic orbits in three dimensions.

Singularity in the discrete-time model of impacting mechanical systems

It is known that many peculiar nonlinear vibration problems in impacting systems are caused by grazing incidences. Such bifurcation phenomena are normally investigated through the Poincare map. The discrete-time map of a simple impact oscillator was derived by Nordmark, which showed that there should be a square-root singularity in the Jacobian matrix close to the grazing condition. In this paper we show that the square root singularity will be expressed only in the trace of the Jacobian matrix, while the determinant remains invariant across the grazing condition.

Transient dynamics in the thermal ratchets transport model

The thermal ratchets model toggles a spatially periodic asymmetric potential to rectify random walks and achieve transport of diffusing particles. We numerically solve the governing equation for the full dynamics of an infinite 1D ratchet model in response to periodic switching. Transient aperiodic behavior is observed that converges asymptotically to the period of the switching. We study measures of the transport rate, the transient lifetime, and an equivalent of `amplitude', then investigate their dependence on various properties of the system, along with other features of the transient and asymptotic dynamics.

Dynamical behaviours in time-delay systems with delayed feedback and digitized coupling

We consider a network of delay dynamical systems connected in a ring via unidirectional positive feedback with constant delay in coupling. For the specific case of Mackey-Glass systems on the ring topology, we capture the phenomena of amplitude death, isochronous synchronization and phase-flip bifurcation as the relevant parameters are tuned. Using linear stability analysis and master stability function approach, we predict the region of amplitude death and synchronized states respectively in the parameter space and study the nature of transitions between the different states. For a large number of systems in the same dynamical configuration, we observe splay states, mixed splay states and phase locked clusters. We extend the study to the case of digitized coupling and observe that these emergent states still persist. However, the sampling and quantization reduce the regions of amplitude death and induce phase-flip bifurcation.

Bifurcation Phenomena in Two-Dimensional Piecewise Smooth Discontinuous Maps

In recent years the theory of border collision bifurcations has been developed for piecewise smooth maps that are continuous across the border, and has been successfully applied to explain nonsmooth bifurcation phenomena in physical systems. However, many switching dynamical systems have been found to yield two-dimensional piecewise smooth maps that are discontinuous across the border. The theory for understanding the bifurcation phenomena in such systems is not available yet. In this paper we present the first approach to the problem of analysing and classifying the bifurcation phenomena in two-dimensional discontinuous maps, based on a piecewise linear approximation in the neighborhood of the border. We explain the bifurcations occurring in the static VAR compensator used in electrical power systems, using the theory developed in this paper. This theory may be applied similarly to other systems that yield two-dimensional discontinuous maps.
