Invisibility's Flicker: Detecting Thermal Cloaks via Transient Effects

Recent research on the development of a thermal cloak has concentrated on engineering an inhomogeneous thermal conductivity and homogeneous volumetric heat capacity. While the perfect cloak of inhomogeneous $κ$ and $ρc_p$ is known to be exact (no signals scattering or penetrating to the cloak's interior), no such analysis has been considered for this case. Using analytic, computational, and experimental techniques, we demonstrate that these approximate cloaks are detectable. Although they work as perfect cloaks in the steady-state, their transient (time-dependent) response is imperfect and a detectable amount of heat is scattered. This is sufficient to determine the presence of a cloak and any heat source it contains, but the material composition hidden within the cloak is not detectable in practice.

Phonon Diodes and Transistors from Magneto-acoustics

By sculpting the magnetic field applied to magneto-acoustic materials, phonons can be used for information processing. Using a combination of analytic and numerical techniques, we demonstrate designs for diodes (isolators) and transistors that are independent of their conventional, electronic formulation. We analyze the experimental feasibility of these systems, including the sensitivity of the circuits to likely systematic and random errors.

Nonplanar ground states of frustrated antiferromagnets on an octahedral lattice

We consider methods to identify the classical ground state for an exchange-coupled Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a non-Bravais lattice with interactions $J_{ij}$ to several neighbor distances. Here we apply this to the unusual "octahedral" lattice in which spins sit on the edge midpoints of a simple cubic lattice. Our approach is informed by the eigenvectors of $J_{ij}$ with largest eigenvalues. We discovered two families of non-coplanar states: (i) two kinds of commensurate state with cubic symmetry, each having twelve sublattices with spins pointing in (1,1,0) directions in spin space (modulo a global rotation); (ii) varieties of incommensurate conic spiral. The latter family is addressed by projecting the three-dimensional lattice to a one-dimensional chain, with a basis of two (or more) sites per unit cell.
