Berezin regularity of domains in C^n and the essential norms of Toeplitz operators

For the open unit disc D\mathbb{D} in the complex plane, it is well known that if ϕ∈C(D‾)ϕ\in C(\overline{\mathbb{D}}) then its Berezin transform ϕ~\widetildeϕ also belongs to C(D‾)C(\overline{\mathbb{D}}). We say that D\mathbb{D} is BC-regular. In this paper we study BC-regularity of some pseudoconvex domains in Cn\mathbb{C}^n and show that the boundary geometry plays an important role. We also establish a relationship between the essential norm of an operator in a natural Toeplitz subalgebra and its Berezin transform.

On compactness and LpL^p-regularity in the ∂‾\overline{\partial}-Neumann problem

Let ΩΩ be a C4C^4-smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain in C2\mathbb{C}^2. We show that if the ∂‾\overline{\partial}-Neumann operator N1N_1 is compact on L(0,1)2(Ω)L^2_{(0,1)}(Ω) then the embedding operator J:Dom(∂‾)∩Dom(∂‾∗)→L(0,1)2(Ω)\mathcal{J}:Dom(\overline{\partial})\cap Dom(\overline{\partial}^*) \to L^2_{(0,1)}(Ω) is LpL^p-regular for all 2≤p<∞2\leq p<\infty.

Convex domains, Hankel operators, and maximal estimates

Let 1≤q≤(n−1)1\leq q\leq (n-1). We first show that a necessary condition for a Hankel operator on (0,q−1)(0,q-1)-forms on a convex domain to be compact is that its symbol is holomorphic along qq-dimensional analytic varieties in the boundary. Because maximal estimates (equivalently, a comparable eigenvalues condition on the Levi form of the boundary) turn out to be favorable for compactness of Hankel operators, this result then implies that on a convex domain, maximal estimates exclude analytic varieties from the boundary, except ones of top dimension (n−1)(n-1) (and their subvarieties). Some of our techniques apply to general pseudoconvex domains to show that if the Levi form has comparable eigenvalues, or equivalently, if the domain admits maximal estimates, then compactness and subellipticity hold for forms at some level qq if and only if they hold at all levels.

Essential norm estimates for Hankel operators on convex domains in C2\mathbb{C}^2

Let Ω⊂C2Ω\subset \mathbb{C}^2 be a bounded convex domain with C1C^1-smooth boundary and φ∈C1(Ω‾)φ\in C^1(\overlineΩ) such that φφ is harmonic on the nontrivial disks in the boundary. We estimate the essential norm of the Hankel operator HφH_φ in terms of the ∂‾\overline{\partial} derivatives of φφ "along" the nontrivial disks in the boundary.

The restriction operator on Bergman spaces

We study the restriction operator from the Bergman space of a domain in Cn\mathbb{C}^n to the Bergman space of a non-empty open subset of the domain. We relate the restriction operator to the Toeplitz operator on the Bergman space of the domain whose symbol is the characteristic function of the subset. Using the biholomorphic invariance of the spectrum of the associated Toeplitz operator, we study the restriction operator from the Bergman space of the unit disc to the Bergman space of subdomains with large symmetry groups, such as horodiscs and subdomains bounded by hypercycles. Furthermore, we prove a sharp estimate of the norm of the restriction operator in case the domain and the subdomain are balls. We also study various operator theoretic properties of the restriction operator such as compactness and essential norm estimates.

Schatten class Hankel and ∂‾\overline{\partial}-Neumann operators on pseudoconvex domains in Cn\mathbb{C}^n

Let ΩΩ be a C2C^2-smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain in Cn\mathbb{C}^n for n≥2n\geq 2 and let φφ be a holomorphic function on ΩΩ that is C2C^2-smooth on the closure of ΩΩ. We prove that if Hφ‾H_{\overlineφ} is in Schatten pp-class for p≤2np\leq 2n then φφ is a constant function. As a corollary, we show that the ∂‾\overline{\partial}-Neumann operator on ΩΩ is not Hilbert-Schmidt.

Compactness of the dbar-Neumann operator and commutators of the Bergman projection with continuous functions

Let D be a bounded pseudoconvex domain in Cn,n≥2,0≤p≤n,C^n, n\geq 2, 0\leq p\leq n, and 1≤q≤n−1.1\leq q\leq n-1. We show that compactness of the dbar-Neumann operator, Np,q+1,N_{p,q+1}, on square integrable (p,q+1)-forms is equivalent to compactness of the commutators [Pp,q,zˉj][P_{p,q}, \bar{z}_j] on square integrable dbar-closed (p,q)-forms for 1≤j≤n1\leq j\leq n where Pp,qP_{p,q} is the Bergman projection on (p,q)-forms. We also show that compactness of the commutator of the Bergman projection with functions continuous on the closure percolates up in the dbar-complex on dbar-closed forms and square integrable holomorphic forms.

Continuity of Plurisubharmonic Envelopes in C2\mathbb{C}^2

We show that in C2\mathbb{C}^2 if the set of strongly regular points are closed in the boundary of a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain, then the domain is c-regular, that is, the plurisubharmonic upper envelopes of functions continuous up to the boundary are continuous on the closure of the domain. Using this result we prove that smooth bounded pseudoconvex Reinhardt domains in C2\mathbb{C}^{2} are cc-regular.

Compactness of products of Hankel operators on the polydisk and some product domains in C2\mathbb{C}^2

Let Dn\mathbb{D}^n be the polydisk in Cn\mathbb{C}^n and the symbols ϕ,ψ∈C(Dnˉ)ϕ,ψ\in C(\bar{\mathbb{D}^n}) such that ϕϕ and ψψ are pluriharmonic on any (n−1)(n-1)-dimensional polydisk in the boundary of Dn.\mathbb{D}^{n}. Then Hψ∗HϕH^*_ψH_ϕ is compact on A2(Dn)A^2(\mathbb{D}^n) if and only if for every 1≤j,k≤n1\leq j,k\leq n such that j≠kj\neq k and any (n−1)(n-1)-dimensional polydisk DD, orthogonal to the zjz_j-axis in the boundary of Dn,\mathbb{D}^n, either ϕϕ or ψψ is holomorphic in zkz_k on D.D. Furthermore, we prove a different sufficient condition for compactnes of the products of Hankel operators. In C2,\mathbb{C}^2, our techniques can be used to get a necessary condition on some product domains involving annuli.

Localization of compactness of Hankel operators on pseudoconvex domains

We prove the following localization for compactness of Hankel operators on Bergman spaces. Assume that D is a bounded pseudoconvex domain in C^n, p is a boundary point of D and B(p,r) is a ball centered at p with radius r so that U=D\cap B(p,r) is connected. We show that if the Hankel operator H^D_f is compact on A^2(D) (the symbols f is C^1 on the closure of D) then H^U_f is compact on A^2(U) where A^2(D) and A^2(U) denote the Bergman spaces on D and U, respectively.

On compactness of the dbar-Neumann problem and Hankel operators

Let $\D=\D_1\setminus \Dc_2$, where $\D_1$ and $\D_2$ are two smooth bounded pseudoconvex domains in $\C^n, n\geq 3,$ such that $\Dc_2\subset \D_1.$ Assume that the $\dbar$-Neumann operator of $\D_1$ is compact and the interior of the Levi-flat points in the boundary of $\D_2$ is not empty (in the relative topology). Then we show that the Hankel operator on $\D$ with symbol $ϕ, H^{\D}_ϕ,$ is compact for every $ϕ\in C(\Dc)$ but the $\dbar$-Neumann operator on $\D$ is not compact.

Compactness of Hankel operators and analytic discs in the boundary of pseudoconvex domains

Using several complex variables techniques, we investigate the interplay between the geometry of the boundary and compactness of Hankel operators. Let f be a function smooth up to the boundary on a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain D in C^n. We show that, if D is convex or the Levi form of the boundary of D is of rank at least n-2, then compactness of the Hankel operator H_f implies that f is holomorphic "along" analytic discs in the boundary. Furthermore, when D is convex in C^2 we show that the condition on f is necessary and sufficient for compactness of H_f

Complex Singularities and the Lorenz Attractor

The Lorenz attractor is one of the best known examples of applied mathematics. However, much of what is known about it is a result of numerical calculations and not of mathematical analysis. As a step toward mathematical analysis, we allow the time variable in the three dimensional Lorenz system to be complex, hoping that solutions that have resisted analysis on the real line will give up their secrets in the complex plane. Knowledge of singularities being fundamental to any investigation in the complex plane, we build upon earlier work and give a complete and consistent formal development of complex singularities of the Lorenz system using {\it psi series}. The psi series contain two undetermined constants. In addition, the location of the singularity is undetermined as a consequence of the autonomous nature of the Lorenz system. We prove that the psi series converge, using a technique that is simpler and more powerful than that of Hille, thus implying a two parameter family of singular solutions of the Lorenz system. We pose three questions, answers to which may bring us closer to understanding the connection of complex singularities to Lorenz dynamics.

A remark on irregularity of the dbar-Neumann problem on non-smooth domains

It is an observation due to J.J. Kohn that for a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain D in CnC^n there exists s>0 such that the dbar-Neumann operator on D maps W(0,1)s(D)W^s_{(0,1)}(D) (the space of (0,1)(0,1)-forms with coefficient functions in L2L^2-Sobolev space of order s) into itself continuously. We show that this conclusion does not hold without the smoothness assumption by constructing a bounded pseudoconvex domain D in C2C^2, smooth except at one point, whose dbar-Neumann operator is not bounded on W(0,1)s(D)W^s_{(0,1)}(D) for any s>0.

Analytic discs, plurisubharmonic hulls, and non-compactness of the d-bar-Neumann operator

We show that a complex manifold M in the boundary of a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain in C^n is an obstruction to compactness of the d-bar-Neumann operator on the domain, provided that at some point of M, the Levi form has the maximal possible rank n-1-dim(M) (i.e. the domain is strictly pseudoconvex in the directions transverse to M). In particular, an analytic disc is an obstruction, provided that at some point of the disc, the Levi form has only one zero eigenvalue. We also show that a boundary point where the Levi form has only one zero eigenvalue can be picked up by the plurisubharmonic hull of a set only via an analytic disc in the boundary.
