Extending compact Hamiltonian $\mathbb{S}^1$-spaces to integrable systems with mild degeneracies in dimension four

Given any compact connected four dimensional symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ and smooth function $J\colon M\to \mathbb{R}$ which generates an effective $\mathbb{S}^1$-action, we show that there exists a smooth function $H\colon M\to\mathbb{R}$ such that $(M,ω,(J,H))$ is a completely (Liouville) integrable system of a type we call hypersemitoric -- these are systems for which all singularities are non-degenerate, except possibly for a finite number of families of degenerate points of a relatively tame type called parabolic (also sometimes called cuspidal). Such an $(M,ω,J)$ is often referred to as a Hamiltonian $\mathbb{S}^1$-space (classified by Karshon in 1999) and we call any integrable system of the form $(M,ω,(J,H))$ an extension of $(M,ω,J)$. Using this terminology, our main result is that any Hamiltonian $\mathbb{S}^1$-space can be extended to a hypersemitoric integrable system. We also show that there exist Hamiltonian $\mathbb{S}^1$-spaces for which any extension must include at least one degenerate singular point. Parabolic points are among the most common and natural degenerate points, and thus hypersemitoric systems are in this sense the `nicest' class of systems to which all Hamiltonian $\mathbb{S}^1$-spaces can be extended. We also prove several foundational results about these systems, such as the non-existence of loops of hyperbolic-regular points and some properties about their fibers.

Symplectic classification of coupled angular momenta

The coupled angular momenta are a family of completely integrable systems that depend on three parameters and have a compact phase space. They correspond to the classical version of the coupling of two quantum angular momenta and they constitute one of the fundamental examples of so-called semitoric systems. Pelayo & Vu Ngoc have given a classification of semitoric systems in terms of five symplectic invariants. Three of these invariants have already been partially calculated in the literature for a certain parameter range, together with the linear terms of the so-called Taylor series invariant for a fixed choice of parameter values. In the present paper we complete the classification by calculating the polygon invariant, the height invariant, the twisting-index invariant, and the higher-order terms of the Taylor series invariant for the whole family of systems. We also analyse the explicit dependence of the coefficients of the Taylor series with respect to the three parameters of the system, in particular near the Hopf bifurcation where the focus-focus point becomes degenerate.

Taylor series and twisting-index invariants of coupled spin-oscillators

About six years ago, semitoric systems on 4-dimensional manifolds were classified by Pelayo & Vu Ngoc by means of five invariants. A standard example of such a system is the coupled spin-oscillator on $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}^2$. Calculations of three of the five semitoric invariants of this system (namely the number of focus-focus singularities, the generalised semitoric polygon, and the height invariant) already appeared in the literature, but the so-called twisting index was not yet computed and, of the so-called Taylor series invariant, only the linear terms were known. In the present paper, we complete the list of invariants for the coupled spin-oscillator by calculating higher order terms of the Taylor series invariant and by computing the twisting index. Moreover, we prove that the Taylor series invariant has certain symmetry properties that make the even powers in one of the variables vanish and allow us to show superintegrability of the coupled spin-oscillator on the zero energy level.

From semi-toric systems to Hamiltonian S^1-spaces

This paper studies the local and global aspects of semi-toric integrable systems, introduced by Vu Ngoc, using ideas stemming from the theory of Hamiltonian S^1-spaces developed by Karshon. First, we show how any labeled convex polygon associated to a semi-toric system (as defined by Vu Ngoc) determines Karshon's labeled directed graph which classifies the underlying Hamiltonian S^1-space up to isomorphism. Then we characterize adaptable semi-toric systems, i.e. those whose underlying Hamiltonian S^1-action can be extended to an effective Hamiltonian T^2-action, as those which have at least one associated convex polygon which satisfies the Delzant condition.
