Scattering from a random thin coating of nanoparticles: the Dirichlet case

We study the time-harmonic scattering by a heterogeneous object covered with a thin layer of randomly distributed sound-soft nanoparticles. The size of the particles, their distance between each other and the layer's thickness are all of the same order but small compared to the wavelength of the incident wave. Solving the Helmholtz equation in this context can be very costly and the simulation depends on the given distribution of particles. To circumvent this, we propose, via a multi-scale asymptotic expansion of the solution, an effective model where the layer of particles is replaced by an equivalent boundary condition. The coefficients that appear in this equivalent boundary condition depend on the solutions to corrector problems of Laplace type defined on unbounded random domains. Under the assumption that the particles are distributed given a stationary and mixing random point process, we prove that those problems admit a unique solution in the proper space. We then establish quantitative error estimates for the effec tive model and present numerical simulations that illustrate our theoretical results.

Wave propagation in one-dimensional quasiperiodic media

This work is devoted to the resolution of the Helmholtz equation $-(μu')' - ρω^2 u = f$ in a one-dimensional unbounded medium. We assume the coefficients of this equation to be local perturbations of quasiperiodic functions, namely the traces along a particular line of higher-dimensional periodic functions. Using the definition of quasiperiodicity, the problem is lifted onto a higher-dimensional problem with periodic coefficients. The periodicity of the augmented problem allows us to extend the ideas of the DtN-based method developed for the elliptic case. However, the associated mathematical and numerical analysis of the method are more delicate because the augmented PDE is degenerate, in the sense that the principal part of its operator is no longer elliptic. We also study the numerical resolution of this PDE, which relies on the resolution of Dirichlet cell problems as well as a constrained Riccati equation.

On the half-space matching method for real wavenumber

The Half-Space Matching (HSM) method has recently been developed as a new method for the solution of 2D scattering problems with complex backgrounds, providing an alternative to Perfectly Matched Layers (PML) or other artificial boundary conditions. Based on half-plane representations for the solution, the scattering problem is rewritten as a system coupling (1) a standard finite element discretisation localised around the scatterer and (2) integral equations whose unknowns are traces of the solution on the boundaries of a finite number of overlapping half-planes contained in the domain. While satisfactory numerical results have been obtained for real wavenumbers, well-posedness and equivalence of this HSM formulation to the original scattering problem have been established only for complex wavenumbers. In the present paper we show, in the case of a homogeneous background, that the HSM formulation is equivalent to the original scattering problem also for real wavenumbers, and so is well-posed, provided the traces satisfy radiation conditions at infinity analogous to the standard Sommerfeld radiation condition. As a key component of our argument we show that, if the trace on the boundary of a half-plane satisfies our new radiation condition, then the corresponding solution to the half-plane Dirichlet problem satisfies the Sommerfeld radiation condition in a slightly smaller half-plane. We expect that this last result will be of independent interest, in particular in studies of rough surface scattering.

A Dirichlet-to-Neumann approach for the exact computation of guided modes in photonic crystal waveguides

This works deals with one dimensional infinite perturbation - namely line defects - in periodic media. In optics, such defects are created to construct an (open) waveguide that concentrates light. The existence and the computation of the eigenmodes is a crucial issue. This is related to a self-adjoint eigenvalue problem associated to a PDE in an unbounded domain (in the directions orthogonal to the line defect), which makes both the analysis and the computations more complex. Using a Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) approach, we show that this problem is equivalent to one set on a small neighborhood of the defect. On contrary to existing methods, this one is exact but there is a price to be paid : the reduction of the problem leads to a nonlinear eigenvalue problem of a fixed point nature.

Transparent boundary conditions for locally perturbed infinite hexagonal periodic media

In this paper, we propose a strategy to determine the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operator for infinite, lossy and locally perturbed hexagonal periodic media. We obtain a factorization of this operator involving two non local operators. The first one is a DtN type operator and corresponds to a half-space problem. The second one is a Dirichlet-to-Dirichlet (DtD) type operator related to the symmetry properties of the problem. The half-space DtN operator is characterized via Floquet-Bloch transform, a family of elementary strip problems and a family of stationary Riccati equations. The DtD operator is the solution of an affine operator valued equation which can be reformulated as a non standard integral equation.
