Efficient implementation of molecular CCSD gradients with Cholesky-decomposed electron repulsion integrals

We present an efficient implementation of ground and excited state CCSD gradients based on Cholesky-decomposed electron repulsion integrals. Cholesky decomposition, like density-fitting, is an inner projection method, and thus similar implementation schemes can be applied for both methods. One well-known advantage of inner projection methods, which we exploit in our implementation, is that one can avoid storing large V3O and V4 arrays by instead considering three-index intermediates. Furthermore, our implementation does not require the formation and storage of Cholesky vector derivatives. The new implementation is shown to perform well, with less than 10% of the time spent calculating the gradients in geometry optimizations. The computational time spent per optimization cycle are furthermore found to be significantly lower compared to other implementations based on an inner projection method. We illustrate the capabilities of the implementation by optimizing the geometry of the retinal molecule (C20H28O) at the CCSD/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory.

Damped (linear) response theory within the resolution-of-identity coupled cluster singles and approximate doubles (RI-CC2) method

An implementation of a complex solver for the solution of the response equations required to compute the complex response functions of damped response theory is presented for the resolution-of-identity (RI) coupled-cluster singles and approximate doubles CC2 method. The implementation uses a partitioned formulation that avoids the storage of double excitation amplitudes to make it applicable to large molecules. The solver is the keystone element for the development of the damped coupled-cluster response formalism for linear and nonlinear effects in resonant frequency regions at the RI-CC2 level of theory. Illustrative results are reported for the one-photon absorption cross section of C60, the electronic circular dichroism of $n$-helicenes ($n$ = 5, 6, 7), and the $C_6$ dispersion coefficients of a set of selected organic molecules and fullerenes.

Simulating weak-field attosecond processes with a Lanczos reduced basis approach to time-dependent equation of motion coupled cluster theory

A time-dependent equation of motion coupled cluster singles and doubles (TD-EOM-CCSD) method is implemented, which uses a reduced basis calculated with the asymmetric band Lanczos algorithm. The approach is used to study weak-field processes in small molecules induced by ultrashort valence pump and core probe pulses. We assess the reliability of the procedure by comparing TD-EOM-CCSD absorption spectra to spectra obtained from the time-dependent coupled-cluster singles and doubles (TDCCSD) method and observe that spectral features can be reproduced for several molecules, at much lower computational times. We discuss how multiphoton absorption and symmetry can be handled in the method and general features of the core-valence separation (CVS) projection technique. We also model the transient absorption of an attosecond X-ray probe pulse by the glycine molecule.

eT 1.0: an open source electronic structure program with emphasis on coupled cluster and multilevel methods

The eT program is an open source electronic structure package with emphasis on coupled cluster and multilevel methods. It includes efficient spin adapted implementations of ground and excited singlet states, as well as equation of motion oscillator strengths, for CCS, CC2, CCSD, and CC3. Furthermore, eT provides unique capabilities such as multilevel Hartree-Fock and multilevel CC2, real-time propagation for CCS and CCSD, and efficient CC3 oscillator strengths. With a coupled cluster code based on an efficient Cholesky decomposition algorithm for the electronic repulsion integrals, eT has similar advantages as codes using density fitting, but with strict error control. Here we present the main features of the program and demonstrate its performance through example calculations. Because of its availability, performance, and unique capabilities, we expect eT to become a valuable resource to the electronic structure community.

Magnetic circular dichroism spectra from resonant and damped coupled cluster response theory

A computational expression for the Faraday A term of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) is derived within coupled cluster response theory and alternative computational expressions for the B term are discussed. Moreover, an approach to compute the (temperature-independent) MCD ellipticity in the context of coupled cluster damped response is presented, and its equivalence with the stick-spectrum approach in the limit of infinite lifetimes is demonstrated. The damped response approach has advantages for molecular systems or spectral ranges with a high density of states. Illustrative results are reported at the coupled cluster singles and doubles level and compared to time-dependent density functional theory results.

Vibrationally Resolved Coupled Cluster X-Ray Absorption Spectra from Vibrational Configuration Interaction Anharmonic Calculations

Vibrationally resolved near-edge x-ray absorption spectra at the K-edge for a number of small molecules have been computed from anharmonic vibrational configuration interaction calculations of the Franck-Condon factors. The potential energy surfaces for ground and core-excited states were obtained at the core-valence separated CC2, CCSD, CCSDR(3), and CC3 levels of theory, employing the Adaptive Density-Guided Approach (ADGA) scheme to select the single points at which to perform the energy calculations. We put forward an initial attempt to include pair-mode coupling terms to describe the potential of polyatomic molecules

Circular and linear magnetic birefringences in xenon at $λ= 1064$ nm

The circular and linear magnetic birefringences corresponding to the Faraday and the Cotton-Mouton effects, respectively, have been measured in xenon at $λ= 1064$ nm. The experimental setup is based on time dependent magnetic fields and a high finesse Fabry-Perot cavity. Our value of the Faraday effect is the first measurement at this wavelength. It is compared to theoretical predictions. Our uncertainty of a few percent yields an agreement at better than 1$σ$ with the computational estimate when relativistic effects are taken into account. Concerning the Cotton-Mouton effect, our measurement, the second ever published at $λ= 1064$ nm, agrees at better than $1σ$ with theoretical predictions. We also compare our error budget with those established for other experimental published values.
