Characterizations and Constructions of Linear Intersection Pairs of Cyclic Codes over Finite Fields

Linear intersection pairs of linear codes have become of interest due to their nice algebraic properties and wide applications. In this paper, we focus on linear intersection pairs of cyclic codes over finite fields. Some properties of cyclotomic cosets in cyclic groups are presented as key tools in the study of such linear intersection pairs. Characterization and constructions of two cyclic codes of a fixed intersecting dimension are given in terms of their generator polynomials and cyclotomic cosets. In some cases, constructions of two cyclic codes of a fixed intersecting subcode are presented as well. Based on the theoretical characterization, some numerical examples of linear intersection pairs of cyclic codes with good parameters are illustrated.

Determinants of some Special Matrices over Commutative Finite Chain Rings

Circulant matrices over finite fields and over commutative finite chain rings have been of interest due to their nice algebraic structures and wide applications. In many cases, such matrices over rings have a closed connection with diagonal matrices over their extension rings. In this paper, the determinants of diagonal and circulant matrices over commutative finite chain rings RR with residue field Fq\mathbb{F}_q are studied. The number of n×nn\times n diagonal matrices over R{R} of determinant aa is determined for all elements aa in R {R} and for all positive integers nn. Subsequently, the enumeration of nonsingular n×nn\times n circulant matrices over R{R} of determinant aa is given for all units aa in R {R} and all positive integers nn such that gcd⁡(n,q)=1\gcd(n,q)=1. In some cases, the number of singular n×nn\times n circulant matrices over R{R} with a fixed determinant is determined through the link between the rings of circulant matrices and diagonal matrices. As applications, a brief discussion on the determinant of diagonal and circulant matrices over commutative finite principal ideal rings is given. Finally, some open problems and conjectures are posted

Revisiting the Factorization of xn+1x^n+1 over Finite Fields

The polynomial xn+1x^n+1 over finite fields has been of interest due to its applications in the study of negacyclic codes over finite fields. In this paper, a rigorous treatment of the factorization of xn+1x^n+1 over finite fields is given as well as its applications. Explicit and recursive methods for factorizing xn+1x^n+1 over finite fields are provided together with the enumeration formula. As applications, some families of negacyclic codes are revisited with more clear and simpler forms.

Constacyclic and Quasi-Twisted Hermitian Self-Dual Codes over Finite Fields

Constacyclic and quasi-twisted Hermitian self-dual codes over finite fields are studied. An algorithm for factorizing xn−λx^n-λ over Fq2\mathbb{F}_{q^2} is given, where λλ is a unit in Fq2\mathbb{F}_{q^2}. Based on this factorization, the dimensions of the Hermitian hulls of λλ-constacyclic codes of length nn over Fq2\mathbb{F}_{q^2} are determined. The characterization and enumeration of constacyclic Hermitian self-dual (resp., complementary dual) codes of length nn over Fq2\mathbb{F}_{q^2} are given through their Hermitian hulls. Subsequently, a new family of MDS constacyclic Hermitian self-dual codes over Fq2\mathbb{F}_{q^2} is introduced. As a generalization of constacyclic codes, quasi-twisted Hermitian self-dual codes are studied. Using the factorization of xn−λx^n-λ and the Chinese Remainder Theorem, quasi-twisted codes can be viewed as a product of linear codes of shorter length some over extension fields of Fq2\mathbb{F}_{q^2}. Necessary and sufficient conditions for quasi-twisted codes to be Hermitian self-dual are given. The enumeration of such self-dual codes is determined as well.

Constructions of Good Entanglement-Assisted Quantum Error Correcting Codes

Entanglement-assisted quantum error correcting codes (EAQECCs) are a simple and fundamental class of codes. They allow for the construction of quantum codes from classical codes by relaxing the duality condition and using pre-shared entanglement between the sender and receiver. However, in general it is not easy to determine the number of shared pairs required to construct an EAQECC. In this paper, we show that this number is related to the hull of the classical code. Using this fact, we give methods to construct EAQECCs requiring desirable amount of entanglement. This leads to design families of EAQECCs with good error performance. Moreover, we construct maximal entanglement EAQECCs from LCD codes. Finally, we prove the existence of asymptotically good EAQECCs in the odd characteristic case.

Self-Dual Abelian Codes in some Non-Principal Ideal Group Algebras

The main focus of this paper is the complete enumeration of self-dual abelian codes in non-principal ideal group algebras F2k[A×Z2×Z2s]\mathbb{F}_{2^k}[A\times \mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_{2^s}] with respect to both the Euclidean and Hermitian inner products, where kk and ss are positive integers and AA is an abelian group of odd order. Based on the well-know characterization of Euclidean and Hermitian self-dual abelian codes, we show that such enumeration can be obtained in terms of a suitable product of the number of cyclic codes, the number of Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes, and the number of Hermitian self-dual cyclic codes of length 2s2^s over some Galois extensions of the ring F2k+uF2k\mathbb{F}_{2^k}+u\mathbb{F}_{2^k}, where u2=0u^2=0. Subsequently, general results on the characterization and enumeration of cyclic codes and self-dual codes of length psp^s over Fpk+uFpk\mathbb{F}_{p^k}+u\mathbb{F}_{p^k} are given. Combining these results, the complete enumeration of self-dual abelian codes in F2k[A×Z2×Z2s]\mathbb{F}_{2^k}[A\times \mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_{2^s}] is therefore obtained.

Hermitian Self-Dual Cyclic Codes of Length pap^a over GR(p2,s)GR(p^2,s)

In this paper, we study cyclic codes over the Galois ring GR(p2,s){\rm GR}({p^2},s). The main result is the characterization and enumeration of Hermitian self-dual cyclic codes of length pap^a over GR(p2,s){\rm GR}({p^2},s). Combining with some known results and the standard Discrete Fourier Transform decomposition, we arrive at the characterization and enumeration of Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes of any length over GR(p2,s){\rm GR}({p^2},s). Some corrections to results on Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes of even length over Z4\mathbb{Z}_4 in Discrete Appl. Math. 128, (2003), 27 and Des. Codes Cryptogr. 39, (2006), 127 are provided.

Vector-Circulant Matrices over Finite Fields and Related Codes

A vector-circulant matrix is a natural generalization of the classical circulant matrix and has applications in constructing additive codes. This article formulates the concept of a vector-circulant matrix over finite fields and gives an algebraic characterization for this kind of matrix. Finally, a construction of additive codes with vector-circulant based over F4\mathbb{F}_4 is given together with some examples of good half-rate additive codes.

CSS-like Constructions of Asymmetric Quantum Codes

Asymmetric quantum error-correcting codes (AQCs) may offer some advantage over their symmetric counterparts by providing better error-correction for the more frequent error types. The well-known CSS construction of qq-ary AQCs is extended by removing the $\F_{q}$-linearity requirement as well as the limitation on the type of inner product used. The proposed constructions are called CSS-like constructions and utilize pairs of nested subfield linear codes under one of the Euclidean, trace Euclidean, Hermitian, and trace Hermitian inner products. After establishing some theoretical foundations, best-performing CSS-like AQCs are constructed. Combining some constructions of nested pairs of classical codes and linear programming, many optimal and good pure qq-ary CSS-like codes for q∈2,3,4,5,7,8,9q \in {2,3,4,5,7,8,9} up to reasonable lengths are found. In many instances, removing the $\F_{q}$-linearity and using alternative inner products give us pure AQCs with improved parameters than relying solely on the standard CSS construction.

Xing-Ling Codes, Duals of their Subcodes, and Good Asymmetric Quantum Codes

A class of powerful qq-ary linear polynomial codes originally proposed by Xing and Ling is deployed to construct good asymmetric quantum codes via the standard CSS construction. Our quantum codes are qq-ary block codes that encode kk qudits of quantum information into nn qudits and correct up to $\flr{(d_{x}-1)/2}$ bit-flip errors and up to $\flr{(d_{z}-1)/2}$ phase-flip errors.. In many cases where the length (q2−q)/2≤n≤(q2+q)/2(q^{2}-q)/2 \leq n \leq (q^{2}+q)/2 and the field size qq are fixed and for chosen values of dx∈{2,3,4,5}d_{x} \in \{2,3,4,5\} and dz≥δd_{z} \ge δ, where δδ is the designed distance of the Xing-Ling (XL) codes, the derived pure qq-ary asymmetric quantum CSS codes possess the best possible size given the current state of the art knowledge on the best classical linear block codes.

Checkable Codes from Group Rings

We study codes with a single check element derived from group rings, namely, checkable codes. The notion of a code-checkable group ring is introduced. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a group ring to be code-checkable are given in the case where the group is a finite abelian group and the ring is a finite field. This characterization leads to many good examples, among which two checkable codes and two shortened codes have minimum distance better than the lower bound given in Grassl's online table. Furthermore, when a group ring is code-checkable, it is shown that every code in such a group ring admits a generator, and that its dual is also generated by an element which may be deduced directly from a check element of the original code. These are analogous to the generator and parity-check polynomials of cyclic codes. In addition, the structures of reversible and complementary dual checkable codes are established as generalizations of reversible and complementary dual cyclic codes.

Skew Constacyclic Codes over Finite Chain Rings

Skew polynomial rings over finite fields ([7] and [10]) and over Galois rings ([8]) have been used to study codes. In this paper, we extend this concept to finite chain rings. Properties of skew constacyclic codes generated by monic right divisors of xn−λx^n-λ, where λλ is a unit element, are exhibited. When λ2=1λ^2=1, the generators of Euclidean and Hermitian dual codes of such codes are determined together with necessary and sufficient conditions for them to be Euclidean and Hermitian self-dual. Of more interest are codes over the ring Fpm+uFpm\mathbb{F}_{p^m}+u\mathbb{F}_{p^m}. The structure of all skew constacyclic codes is completely determined. This allows us to express generators of Euclidean and Hermitian dual codes of skew cyclic and skew negacyclic codes in terms of the generators of the original codes. An illustration of all skew cyclic codes of length~2 over F3+uF3\mathbb{F}_{3}+u\mathbb{F}_{3} and their Euclidean and Hermitian dual codes is also provided.
