Unique Decoding of Extended Subcodes of GRS Codes Using Error-Correcting Pairs

Extended Han-Zhang codes are a class of linear codes where each code is either a non-generalized Reed-Solomon (non-GRS) maximum distance separable (MDS) code or a near MDS (NMDS) code. They have important applications in communication, cryptography, and storage systems. While many algebraic properties and explicit constructions of extended Han-Zhang codes have been well studied in the literature, their decoding has been unexplored. In this paper, we focus on their decoding problems in terms of $\ell$-error-correcting pairs ($\ell$-ECPs) and deep holes. On the one hand, we determine the existence and specific forms of their $\ell$-ECPs, and further present an explicit decoding algorithm for extended Han-Zhang codes based on these $\ell$-ECPs, which can correct up to $\ell$ errors in polynomial time, with $\ell$ about half of the minimum distance. On the other hand, we determine the covering radius of extended Han-Zhang codes and characterize two classes of their deep holes, which are closely related to the maximum-likelihood decoding method. By employing these deep holes, we also construct more non-GRS MDS codes with larger lengths and dimensions, and discuss the monomial equivalence between them and the well-known Roth-Lempel codes. Some concrete examples are also given to support these results.

Entanglement-Assisted and Subsystem Quantum Codes: New Propagation Rules and Constructions

This paper proposes new propagation rules on quantum codes in the entanglement-assisted and in quantum subsystem scenarios. The rules lead to new families of such quantum codes whose parameters are demonstrably optimal. To obtain the results, we devise tools to puncture and shorten codes in ways that ensure their Hermitian hulls have certain desirable properties. More specifically, we give a general framework to construct $k$-dimensional generalized Reed-Solomon codes whose Hermitian hulls are $(k-1)$-dimensional maximum distance separable codes.

An explicit expression for Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes of length $2^k$ over Galois ring ${\rm GR}(4,m)$

For any positive integers $m$ and $k$, existing literature only determines the number of all Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes of length $2^k$ over the Galois ring ${\rm GR}(4,m)$, such as in [Des. Codes Cryptogr. (2012) 63:105--112]. Using properties for Kronecker products of matrices of a specific type and column vectors of these matrices, we give a simple and efficient method to construct all these self-dual cyclic codes precisely. On this basis, we provide an explicit expression to accurately represent all distinct Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes of length $2^k$ over ${\rm GR}(4,m)$, using combination numbers. As an application, we list all distinct Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes over ${\rm GR}(4,m)$ of length $2^k$ explicitly, for $k=4,5,6$.

Patch-Based Holographic Image Sensing

Holographic representations of data enable distributed storage with progressive refinement when the stored packets of data are made available in any arbitrary order. In this paper, we propose and test patch-based transform coding holographic sensing of image data. Our proposal is optimized for progressive recovery under random order of retrieval of the stored data. The coding of the image patches relies on the design of distributed projections ensuring best image recovery, in terms of the $\ell_2$ norm, at each retrieval stage. The performance depends only on the number of data packets that has been retrieved thus far. Several possible options to enhance the quality of the recovery while changing the size and number of data packets are discussed and tested. This leads us to examine several interesting bit-allocation and rate-distortion trade offs, highlighted for a set of natural images with ensemble estimated statistical properties.

Provably Secure Group Signature Schemes from Code-Based Assumptions

We solve an open question in code-based cryptography by introducing two provably secure group signature schemes from code-based assumptions. Our basic scheme satisfies the CPA-anonymity and traceability requirements in the random oracle model, assuming the hardness of the McEliece problem, the Learning Parity with Noise problem, and a variant of the Syndrome Decoding problem. The construction produces smaller key and signature sizes than the previous group signature schemes from lattices, as long as the cardinality of the underlying group does not exceed $2^{24}$, which is roughly comparable to the current population of the Netherlands. We develop the basic scheme further to achieve the strongest anonymity notion, i.e., CCA-anonymity, with a small overhead in terms of efficiency. The feasibility of two proposed schemes is supported by implementation results. Our two schemes are the first in their respective classes of provably secure groups signature schemes. Additionally, the techniques introduced in this work might be of independent interest. These are a new verifiable encryption protocol for the randomized McEliece encryption and a novel approach to design formal security reductions from the Syndrome Decoding problem.

Good Stabilizer Codes from Quasi-Cyclic Codes over $\mathbb{F}_4$ and $\mathbb{F}_9$

We apply quantum Construction X on quasi-cyclic codes with large Hermitian hulls over $\mathbb{F}_4$ and $\mathbb{F}_9$ to derive good qubit and qutrit stabilizer codes, respectively. In several occasions we obtain quantum codes with stricly improved parameters than the current record. In numerous other occasions we obtain quantum codes with best-known performance. For the qutrit ones we supply a systematic construction to fill some gaps in the literature.

Robust Positioning Patterns with Low Redundancy

A robust positioning pattern is a large array that allows a mobile device to locate its position by reading a possibly corrupted small window around it. In this paper, we provide constructions of binary positioning patterns, equipped with efficient locating algorithms, that are robust to a constant number of errors and have redundancy within a constant factor of optimality. Furthermore, we modify our constructions to correct rank errors and obtain binary positioning patterns robust to any errors of rank less than a constant number. Additionally, we construct $q$-ary robust positioning sequences robust to a large number of errors, some of which have length attaining the upper bound. Our construction of binary positioning sequences that are robust to a constant number of errors has the least known redundancy amongst those explicit constructions with efficient locating algorithms. On the other hand, for binary robust positioning arrays, our construction is the first explicit construction whose redundancy is within a constant factor of optimality. The locating algorithms accompanying both constructions run in time cubic in sequence length or array dimension.

Holographic Sensing

Holographic representations of data encode information in packets of equal importance that enable progressive recovery. The quality of recovered data improves as more and more packets become available. This progressive recovery of the information is independent of the order in which packets become available. Such representations are ideally suited for distributed storage and for the transmission of data packets over networks with unpredictable delays and or erasures. Several methods for holographic representations of signals and images have been proposed over the years and multiple description information theory also deals with such representations. Surprisingly, however, these methods had not been considered in the classical framework of optimal least-squares estimation theory, until very recently. We develop a least-squares approach to the design of holographic representation for stochastic data vectors, relying on the framework widely used in modeling signals and images.

Three new classes of optimal frequency-hopping sequence sets

The study of frequency-hopping sequences (FHSs) has been focused on the establishment of theoretical bounds for the parameters of FHSs as well as on the construction of optimal FHSs with respect to the bounds. Peng and Fan (2004) derived two lower bounds on the maximum nontrivial Hamming correlation of an FHS set, which is an important indicator in measuring the performance of an FHS set employed in practice. In this paper, we obtain two main results. We study the construction of new optimal frequency-hopping sequence sets by using cyclic codes over finite fields. Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a cyclic code of length $n$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that $\mathcal{C}$ contains the one-dimensional subcode $ \mathcal{C}_0=\{(α,α,\cdots,α)\in \mathbb{F}_q^n\,|\,α\in \mathbb{F}_q\}. $ Two codewords of $\mathcal{C}$ are said to be equivalent if one can be obtained from the other through applying the cyclic shift a certain number of times. We present a necessary and sufficient condition under which the equivalence class of any codeword in $\mathcal{C}\setminus\mathcal{C}_0$ has size $n$. This result addresses an open question raised by Ding {\it et al.} in \cite{Ding09}. As a consequence, three new classes of optimal FHS sets with respect to the Singleton bound are obtained, some of which are also optimal with respect to the Peng-Fan bound at the same time. We also show that the two Peng-Fan bounds are, in fact, identical.

Construction of Quasi-Cyclic Product Codes

Linear quasi-cyclic product codes over finite fields are investigated. Given the generating set in the form of a reduced Gr{ö}bner basis of a quasi-cyclic component code and the generator polynomial of a second cyclic component code, an explicit expression of the basis of the generating set of the quasi-cyclic product code is given. Furthermore, the reduced Gr{ö}bner basis of a one-level quasi-cyclic product code is derived.

Spectral Analysis of Quasi-Cyclic Product Codes

This paper considers a linear quasi-cyclic product code of two given quasi-cyclic codes of relatively prime lengths over finite fields. We give the spectral analysis of a quasi-cyclic product code in terms of the spectral analysis of the row- and the column-code. Moreover, we provide a new lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of a given quasi-cyclic code and present a new algebraic decoding algorithm.More specifically, we prove an explicit (unreduced) basis of an l\_a l\_b-quasi-cyclic product code in terms of the generator matrix in reduced Gr{ö}bner basis with respect to the position-over-term order (RGB/POT) form of the l\_a-quasi-cyclic row- and the l\_b-quasi-cyclic column-code, respectively. This generalizes the work of Burton and Weldon for the generator polynomial of a cyclic product code (where l\_a =l\_b=1). Furthermore, we derive the generator matrix in Pre-RGB/POT form of an l\_a l\_b-quasi-cyclic product code for two special cases: (i) for l\_a=2 and l\_b=1, and (ii) if the row-code is a 1-level l\_a-quasi-cyclic code (for arbitrary l\_a) and l\_b=1.For arbitrary l\_a and l\_b, the Pre-RGB/POT form of the generator matrix of an l\_a l\_b-quasi-cyclic product code is conjectured. The spectral analysis is applied to the generator matrix of the product of an l-quasi-cyclic and a cyclic code, and we propose a new lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of a given l-quasi-cyclic code. In addition, we develop an efficient syndrome-based decoding algorithm for l-phased burst errors with guaranteed decoding radius.

Application of Constacyclic codes to Quantum MDS Codes

Quantum maximal-distance-separable (MDS) codes form an important class of quantum codes. To get $q$-ary quantum MDS codes, it suffices to find linear MDS codes $C$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ satisfying $C^{\perp_H}\subseteq C$ by the Hermitian construction and the quantum Singleton bound. If $C^{\perp_{H}}\subseteq C$, we say that $C$ is a dual-containing code. Many new quantum MDS codes with relatively large minimum distance have been produced by constructing dual-containing constacyclic MDS codes (see \cite{Guardia11}, \cite{Kai13}, \cite{Kai14}). These works motivate us to make a careful study on the existence condition for nontrivial dual-containing constacyclic codes. This would help us to avoid unnecessary attempts and provide effective ideas in order to construct dual-containing codes. Several classes of dual-containing MDS constacyclic codes are constructed and their parameters are computed. Consequently, new quantum MDS codes are derived from these parameters. The quantum MDS codes exhibited here have parameters better than the ones available in the literature.

Hermitian Self-Dual Cyclic Codes of Length $p^a$ over $GR(p^2,s)$

In this paper, we study cyclic codes over the Galois ring ${\rm GR}({p^2},s)$. The main result is the characterization and enumeration of Hermitian self-dual cyclic codes of length $p^a$ over ${\rm GR}({p^2},s)$. Combining with some known results and the standard Discrete Fourier Transform decomposition, we arrive at the characterization and enumeration of Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes of any length over ${\rm GR}({p^2},s)$. Some corrections to results on Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes of even length over $\mathbb{Z}_4$ in Discrete Appl. Math. 128, (2003), 27 and Des. Codes Cryptogr. 39, (2006), 127 are provided.

Polyadic Constacyclic Codes

For any given positive integer $m$, a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of Type I $m$-adic constacyclic codes is given. Further, for any given integer $s$, a necessary and sufficient condition for $s$ to be a multiplier of a Type I polyadic constacyclic code is given. As an application, some optimal codes from Type I polyadic constacyclic codes, including generalized Reed-Solomon codes and alternant MDS codes, are constructed.

Self-dual cyclic codes over finite chain rings

Let $R$ be a finite commutative chain ring with unique maximal ideal $\langle γ\rangle$, and let $n$ be a positive integer coprime with the characteristic of $R/\langle γ\rangle$. In this paper, the algebraic structure of cyclic codes of length $n$ over $R$ is investigated. Some new necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of nontrivial self-dual cyclic codes are provided. An enumeration formula for the self-dual cyclic codes is also studied.

CSS-like Constructions of Asymmetric Quantum Codes

Asymmetric quantum error-correcting codes (AQCs) may offer some advantage over their symmetric counterparts by providing better error-correction for the more frequent error types. The well-known CSS construction of $q$-ary AQCs is extended by removing the $\F_{q}$-linearity requirement as well as the limitation on the type of inner product used. The proposed constructions are called CSS-like constructions and utilize pairs of nested subfield linear codes under one of the Euclidean, trace Euclidean, Hermitian, and trace Hermitian inner products. After establishing some theoretical foundations, best-performing CSS-like AQCs are constructed. Combining some constructions of nested pairs of classical codes and linear programming, many optimal and good pure $q$-ary CSS-like codes for $q \in {2,3,4,5,7,8,9}$ up to reasonable lengths are found. In many instances, removing the $\F_{q}$-linearity and using alternative inner products give us pure AQCs with improved parameters than relying solely on the standard CSS construction.

Pure Asymmetric Quantum MDS Codes from CSS Construction: A Complete Characterization

Using the Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) construction, pure $q$-ary asymmetric quantum error-correcting codes attaining the quantum Singleton bound are constructed. Such codes are called pure CSS asymmetric quantum maximum distance separable (AQMDS) codes. Assuming the validity of the classical MDS Conjecture, pure CSS AQMDS codes of all possible parameters are accounted for.

Upper Bounds on Matching Families in $\mathbb{Z}_{pq}^n$

\textit{Matching families} are one of the major ingredients in the construction of {\em locally decodable codes} (LDCs) and the best known constructions of LDCs with a constant number of queries are based on matching families. The determination of the largest size of any matching family in $\mathbb{Z}_m^n$, where $\mathbb{Z}_m$ is the ring of integers modulo $m$, is an interesting problem. In this paper, we show an upper bound of $O((pq)^{0.625n+0.125})$ for the size of any matching family in $\mathbb{Z}_{pq}^n$, where $p$ and $q$ are two distinct primes. Our bound is valid when $n$ is a constant, $p\rightarrow \infty$ and $p/q\rightarrow 1$. Our result improves an upper bound of Dvir {\it et al.}

Anonymous and Adaptively Secure Revocable IBE with Constant Size Public Parameters

In Identity-Based Encryption (IBE) systems, key revocation is non-trivial. This is because a user's identity is itself a public key. Moreover, the private key corresponding to the identity needs to be obtained from a trusted key authority through an authenticated and secrecy protected channel. So far, there exist only a very small number of revocable IBE (RIBE) schemes that support non-interactive key revocation, in the sense that the user is not required to interact with the key authority or some kind of trusted hardware to renew her private key without changing her public key (or identity). These schemes are either proven to be only selectively secure or have public parameters which grow linearly in a given security parameter. In this paper, we present two constructions of non-interactive RIBE that satisfy all the following three attractive properties: (i) proven to be adaptively secure under the Symmetric External Diffie-Hellman (SXDH) and the Decisional Linear (DLIN) assumptions; (ii) have constant-size public parameters; and (iii) preserve the anonymity of ciphertexts---a property that has not yet been achieved in all the current schemes.

Cumulative Distance Enumerators of Random Codes and their Thresholds

Cumulative weight enumerators of random linear codes are introduced, their asymptotic properties are studied, and very sharp thresholds are exhibited; as a consequence, it is shown that the asymptotic Gilbert-Varshamov bound is a very sharp threshold point for the density of the linear codes whose relative distance is greater than a given positive number. For arbitrary random codes, similar settings and results are exhibited; in particular, the very sharp threshold point for the density of the codes whose relative distance is greater than a given positive number is located at half the asymptotic Gilbert-Varshamov bound.

Checkable Codes from Group Rings

We study codes with a single check element derived from group rings, namely, checkable codes. The notion of a code-checkable group ring is introduced. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a group ring to be code-checkable are given in the case where the group is a finite abelian group and the ring is a finite field. This characterization leads to many good examples, among which two checkable codes and two shortened codes have minimum distance better than the lower bound given in Grassl's online table. Furthermore, when a group ring is code-checkable, it is shown that every code in such a group ring admits a generator, and that its dual is also generated by an element which may be deduced directly from a check element of the original code. These are analogous to the generator and parity-check polynomials of cyclic codes. In addition, the structures of reversible and complementary dual checkable codes are established as generalizations of reversible and complementary dual cyclic codes.

From Skew-Cyclic Codes to Asymmetric Quantum Codes

We introduce an additive but not $\mathbb{F}_4$-linear map $S$ from $\mathbb{F}_4^{n}$ to $\mathbb{F}_4^{2n}$ and exhibit some of its interesting structural properties. If $C$ is a linear $[n,k,d]_4$-code, then $S(C)$ is an additive $(2n,2^{2k},2d)_4$-code. If $C$ is an additive cyclic code then $S(C)$ is an additive quasi-cyclic code of index $2$. Moreover, if $C$ is a module $θ$-cyclic code, a recently introduced type of code which will be explained below, then $S(C)$ is equivalent to an additive cyclic code if $n$ is odd and to an additive quasi-cyclic code of index $2$ if $n$ is even. Given any $(n,M,d)_4$-code $C$, the code $S(C)$ is self-orthogonal under the trace Hermitian inner product. Since the mapping $S$ preserves nestedness, it can be used as a tool in constructing additive asymmetric quantum codes.

Linear Size Optimal q-ary Constant-Weight Codes and Constant-Composition Codes

An optimal constant-composition or constant-weight code of weight $w$ has linear size if and only if its distance $d$ is at least $2w-1$. When $d\geq 2w$, the determination of the exact size of such a constant-composition or constant-weight code is trivial, but the case of $d=2w-1$ has been solved previously only for binary and ternary constant-composition and constant-weight codes, and for some sporadic instances. This paper provides a construction for quasicyclic optimal constant-composition and constant-weight codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ based on a new generalization of difference triangle sets. As a result, the sizes of optimal constant-composition codes and optimal constant-weight codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ are determined for all such codes of sufficiently large lengths. This solves an open problem of Etzion. The sizes of optimal constant-composition codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ are also determined for all $w\leq 6$, except in two cases.

New Results on Two Hypercube Coloring Problems

In this paper, we study the following two hypercube coloring problems: Given $n$ and $d$, find the minimum number of colors, denoted as $χ'_{d}(n)$ (resp. $χ_{d}(n)$), needed to color the vertices of the $n$-cube such that any two vertices with Hamming distance at most $d$ (resp. exactly $d$) have different colors. These problems originally arose in the study of the scalability of optical networks. Using methods in coding theory, we show that $χ'_{4}(2^{r+1}-1)=2^{2r+1}$, $χ'_{5}(2^{r+1})=4^{r+1}$ for any odd number $r\geq3$, and give two upper bounds on $χ_{d}(n)$. The first upper bound improves on that of Kim, Du and Pardalos. The second upper bound improves on the first one for small $n$. Furthermore, we derive an inequality on $χ_{d}(n)$ and $χ'_{d}(n)$.

Query-Efficient Locally Decodable Codes of Subexponential Length

We develop the algebraic theory behind the constructions of Yekhanin (2008) and Efremenko (2009), in an attempt to understand the ``algebraic niceness'' phenomenon in $\mathbb{Z}_m$. We show that every integer $m = pq = 2^t -1$, where $p$, $q$ and $t$ are prime, possesses the same good algebraic property as $m=511$ that allows savings in query complexity. We identify 50 numbers of this form by computer search, which together with 511, are then applied to gain improvements on query complexity via Itoh and Suzuki's composition method. More precisely, we construct a $3^{\lceil r/2\rceil}$-query LDC for every positive integer $r<104$ and a $\left\lfloor (3/4)^{51}\cdot 2^{r}\right\rfloor$-query LDC for every integer $r\geq 104$, both of length $N_{r}$, improving the $2^r$ queries used by Efremenko (2009) and $3\cdot 2^{r-2}$ queries used by Itoh and Suzuki (2010). We also obtain new efficient private information retrieval (PIR) schemes from the new query-efficient LDCs.

Skew Constacyclic Codes over Finite Chain Rings

Skew polynomial rings over finite fields ([7] and [10]) and over Galois rings ([8]) have been used to study codes. In this paper, we extend this concept to finite chain rings. Properties of skew constacyclic codes generated by monic right divisors of $x^n-λ$, where $λ$ is a unit element, are exhibited. When $λ^2=1$, the generators of Euclidean and Hermitian dual codes of such codes are determined together with necessary and sufficient conditions for them to be Euclidean and Hermitian self-dual. Of more interest are codes over the ring $\mathbb{F}_{p^m}+u\mathbb{F}_{p^m}$. The structure of all skew constacyclic codes is completely determined. This allows us to express generators of Euclidean and Hermitian dual codes of skew cyclic and skew negacyclic codes in terms of the generators of the original codes. An illustration of all skew cyclic codes of length~2 over $\mathbb{F}_{3}+u\mathbb{F}_{3}$ and their Euclidean and Hermitian dual codes is also provided.

Universal Cycles for Minimum Coverings of Pairs by Triples, with Application to 2-Radius Sequences

A new ordering, extending the notion of universal cycles of Chung {\em et al.} (1992), is proposed for the blocks of $k$-uniform set systems. Existence of minimum coverings of pairs by triples that possess such an ordering is established for all orders. Application to the construction of short 2-radius sequences is given, with some new 2-radius sequences found through computer search.
