Equivalence of Doubly Periodic Tangles

Doubly periodic tangles, or DP tangles, are embeddings of curves in the thickened plane that are periodically repeated in two directions. They are defined as universal covers of their generating cells, the flat motifs, which represent knots and links in the thickened torus, and which can be chosen in infinitely many ways. DP tangles are used in modeling materials and physical systems of entangled filaments. In this paper we establish the complete mathematical framework of the topological theory of DP tangles. We present an exhaustive analysis of DP tangle isotopies. These are distinguished in local isotopies and global isotopies. Our analysis yields the characterization of DP isotopy as an equivalence relation on the level of their (flat) motifs, called DP tangle equivalence. Along the way we also discuss motif minimality. We further generalize our results to other diagrammatic categories, namely framed, virtual, welded, singular, pseudo, tied and bonded DP tangles, which could be used in novel applications.

Braidoids

Braidoids generalize the classical braids and form a counterpart theory to the theory of planar knotoids, just as the theory of braids does for the theory of knots. In this paper, we introduce basic notions of braidoids, a closure operation for braidoids, we prove an analogue of the Alexander theorem, that is, an algorithm that turns a knotoid into a braidoid, and we formulate and prove a geometric analogue of the Markov theorem for braidoids using the $L$-moves.

Classical link invariants from the framizations of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra and the Temperley-Lieb algebra of type $A$

In this paper we first present the construction of the new 2-variable classical link invariants arising from the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras ${\rm Y}_{d,n}(q)$, which are not topologically equivalent to the Homflypt polynomial. We then present the algebra ${\rm FTL}_{d,n}(q)$ which is the appropriate Temperley-Lieb analogue of ${\rm Y}_{d,n}(q)$, as well as the related 1-variable classical link invariants, which in turn are not topologically equivalent to the Jones polynomial. Finally, we present the algebra of braids and ties which is related to the Yokonuma-Hecke algebra, and also its quotient, the partition Temperley-Lieb algebra ${\rm PTL}_n(q)$ and we prove an isomorphism of this algebra with a subalgebra of ${\rm FTL}_{d,n}(q)$.

Identifying the invariants for classical knots and links from the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras

In this paper we announce the existence of a family of new $2$-variable polynomial invariants for oriented classical links defined via a Markov trace on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebra of type $A$. Yokonuma-Hecke algebras are generalizations of Iwahori-Hecke algebras, and this family contains the Homflypt polynomial, the famous $2$-variable invariant for classical links arising from the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$. We show that these invariants are topologically equivalent to the Homflypt polynomial on knots, but not on links, by providing pairs of Homflypt-equivalent links that are distinguished by our invariants. In order to do this, we prove that our invariants can be defined diagrammatically via a special skein relation involving only crossings between different components. We further generalize this family of invariants to a new $3$-variable skein link invariant which is stronger than the Homflypt polynomial. Finally, we present a closed formula for this invariant, by W.B.R. Lickorish, which uses Homflypt polynomials of sublinks and linking numbers of a given oriented link.

Topological steps toward the Homflypt skein module of the lens spaces $L(p,1)$ via braids

In this paper we work toward the Homflypt skein module of the lens spaces $L(p,1)$, $\mathcal{S}(L(p,1))$, using braids. In particular, we establish the connection between $\mathcal{S}({\rm ST})$, the Homflypt skein module of the solid torus ST, and $\mathcal{S}(L(p,1))$ and arrive at an infinite system, whose solution corresponds to the computation of $\mathcal{S}(L(p,1))$. We start from the Lambropoulou invariant $X$ for knots and links in ST, the universal analogue of the Homflypt polynomial in ST, and a new basis, $Λ$, of $\mathcal{S}({\rm ST})$ presented in \cite{DL1}. We show that $\mathcal{S}(L(p,1))$ is obtained from $\mathcal{S}({\rm ST})$ by considering relations coming from the performance of braid band moves (bbm) on elements in the basis $Λ$, where the braid band moves are performed on any moving strand of each element in $Λ$. We do that by proving that the system of equations obtained from diagrams in ST by performing bbm on any moving strand is equivalent to the system obtained if we only consider elements in the basic set $Λ$. The importance of our approach is that it can shed light to the problem of computing skein modules of arbitrary c.c.o. $3$-manifolds, since any $3$-manifold can be obtained by surgery on $S^3$ along unknotted closed curves. The main difficulty of the problem lies in selecting from the infinitum of band moves some basic ones and solving the infinite system of equations.

Framization of the Temperley-Lieb Algebra

We propose a framization of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. The framization is a procedure that can briefly be described as the adding of framing to a known knot algebra in a way that is both algebraically consistent and topologically meaningful. Our framization of the Temperley-Lieb algebra is defined as a quotient of the Yokonuma-Hecke algebra. The main theorem provides necessary and sufficient conditions for the Markov trace defined on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebra to pass through to the quotient algebra. Using this we construct 1-variable invariants for classical knots and links, which, as we show, are not topologically equivalent to the Jones polynomial.

On the link invariants from the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras

In this paper we study properties of the Markov trace ${\rm tr}_d$ and the specialized trace ${\rm tr}_{d,D}$ on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras, such as behaviour under inversion of a word, connected sums and mirror imaging. We then define invariants for framed, classical and singular links through the trace ${\rm tr}_{d,D}$ and also invariants for transverse links through the trace ${\rm tr}_d$. In order to compare the invariants for classical links with the Homflypt polynomial we develop computer programs and we evaluate them on several Homflypt-equivalent pairs of knots and links. Our computations lead to the result that these invariants are topologically equivalent to the Homflypt polynomial on knots. However, they do not demonstrate the same behaviour on links.

Hard Unknots and Collapsing Tangles

This paper gives infinitely many examples of unknot diagrams that are hard, in the sense that the diagrams need to be made more complicated by Reidemeister moves before they can be simplified. In order to construct these diagrams, we prove theorems characterizing when the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles is an unknot. The key theorem shows that the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles [P/Q] and [R/S] is unknotted if and only if PS + QR has absolute value equal to 1. The paper uses these results in studying processive DNA recombination, finding minimal size unknot diagrams, generalizing to collapses to knots as well as to unknots, and in finding unknots with arbirarily high complexity. The paper is self-contained, with a review of the theory of rational tangles and a last section on relationships of the theme of the paper with other aspects of topology and number theory. The present version of the paper contains a correction to Figure 22 of the previous (and published) version, a small expansion to the section on Farey fractions, and an updated reference to the paper "Unknotting unknots" by Henrich and Kauffman.

On the framization of knot algebras

This paper presents results on the framization of some knot algebras, defined by the authors. We explain the motivations of the concept of framization, coming from the Yokonuma--Hecke algebras, as well as recent results on the framization of the Temperley--Lieb algebra. Finally, we propose framizations for other knot algebras such as the BMW algebra, the $B$--type related Hecke algebras and the singular Hecke algebra.

Braid equivalence in 3-manifolds with rational surgery description

In this paper we describe braid equivalence for knots and links in a 3-manifold $M$ obtained by rational surgery along a framed link in $S^3$. We first prove a sharpened version of the Reidemeister theorem for links in $M$. We then give geometric formulations of the braid equivalence via mixed braids in $S^3$ using the $L$-moves and the braid band moves. We finally give algebraic formulations in terms of the mixed braid groups $B_{m,n}$ using cabling and the techniques of parting and combing for mixed braids. We also provide concrete formuli of the braid equivalence in the case where $M$ is a lens space, a Seifert manifold or a homology sphere obtained from the trefoil. The algebraic classification of knots and links in a $3$-manifold via mixed braids is a useful tool for studying skein modules of $3$-manifolds.

The Yokonuma-Temperley-Lieb Algebra

In this paper we introduce the Yokonuma-Temperley-Lieb algebra as a quotient of the Yokonuma-Hecke algebra over a two-sided ideal generated by an expression analogous to the one of the classical Temperley-Lieb algebra. The main theorem provides necessary and sufficient conditions for the Markov trace defined on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebra to pass through to the quotient algebra, leading to a sequence of knot invariants which coincide with the Jones polynomial.

$p$-adic framed braids II

The Yokonuma-Hecke algebras are quotients of the modular framed braid group and they support Markov traces. In this paper, which is sequel to Juyumaya and Lambropoulou (2007), we explore further the structures of the $p$-adic framed braids and the $p$-adic Yokonuma-Hecke algebras constructed in Juyumaya and Lambropoulou (2007), by means of dense sub-structures approximating $p$-adic elements. We also construct a $p$-adic Markov trace on the $p$-adic Yokonuma-Hecke algebras and we approximate the values of the $p$-adic trace on $p$-adic elements. Surprisingly, the Markov traces do not re-scale directly to yield isotopy invariants of framed links. This leads to imposing the `$E$-condition' on the trace parameters. For solutions of the `$E$-system' we then define 2-variable isotopy invariants of modular framed links. These lift to $p$-adic isotopy invariants of classical framed links. The Yokonuma-Hecke algebras have topological interpretations in the context of framed knots, of classical knots of singular knots and of transverse knots.

A Categorical Model for the Virtual Braid Group

This paper gives a new interpretation of the virtual braid group in terms of a strict monoidal category SC that is freely generated by one object and three morphisms, two of the morphisms corresponding to basic pure virtual braids and one morphism corresponding to a transposition in the symmetric group. The key to this approach is to take pure virtual braids as primary. The generators of the pure virtual braid group are abstract solutions to the algebraic Yang-Baxter equation. This point of view illuminates representations of the virtual braid groups and pure virtual braid groups via solutions to the algebraic Yang-Baxter equation. In this categorical framework, the virtual braid group is a natural group associated with the structure of algebraic braiding. We then point out how the category SC is related to categories associated with quantum algebras and Hopf algebras and with quantum invariants of virtual links.

Braid equivalences and the $L$--moves

In this survey paper we present the $L$--moves between braids and how they can adapt and serve for establishing and proving braid equivalence theorems for various diagrammatic settings, such as for classical knots, for knots in knot complements, in c.c.o. 3--manifolds and in handlebodies, as well as for virtual knots, for flat virtuals, for welded knots and for singular knots. The $L$--moves are local and they provide a uniform ground for formulating and proving braid equivalence theorems for any diagrammatic setting where the notion of braid and diagrammatic isotopy is defined, the statements being first geometric and then algebraic.

An adelic extension of the Jones polynomial

In this paper we represent the classical braids in the Yokonuma--Hecke and the adelic Yokonuma--Hecke algebras. More precisely, we define the completion of the framed braid group and we introduce the adelic Yokonuma--Hecke algebras, in analogy to the $p$--adic framed braids and the $p$--adic Yokonuma--Hecke algebras introduced in \cite{jula,jula2}. We further construct an adelic Markov trace, analogous to the $p$--adic Markov trace constructed in \cite{jula2}, and using the traces in \cite{ju} and the adelic Markov trace we define topological invariants of classical knots and links, upon imposing some condition. Each invariant satisfies a cubic skein relation coming from the Yokonuma--Hecke algebra.

Modular framization of the BMW algebra

In this work we introduce the concept of Modular Framization or simply Framization. We construct a framization $F_{d,n}$ of the Birman--Wenzl--Murakami algebra, also known as BMW algebra, and start a systematic study of this framization. We show that $F_{d,n}$ is finite dimensional and the \lq braid generators\rq\ of this algebra satisfy a quartic relation which is of minimal degree not containing the generators $t_i$. They also satisfy a quintic relation, as the smallest closed relation. We conjecture that the algebras $F_{d,n}$ support a Markov trace which allow to define polynomial invariants for unoriented knots in an analogous way that the Kauffman polynomial is derived from the BMW algebra. The idea originates from the Yokonuma--Hecke algebra, built from the classical Hecke algebra by adding framing generators and changing the Hecke algebra quadratic relation by a new quadratic relation which involves the framing generators. Using the Yokonuma--Hecke algebras and a Markov trace constructed on them\cite{ju} we produced invariants for oriented framed knots\cite{jula1,jula3}, classical knots\cite{jula4} (which satisfies a cubic skein relation), and singular knots\cite{jula2}. Moreover, we have connections with virtual braids and transversal knot theory. In this note we also apply the framization mechanism on other knot algebras, such as the Temperley--Lieb algebra, the singular Hecke algebra introduced by Paris and Rabenda and Hecke algebras of type $B$.

Braid structures in knot complements, handlebodies and 3-manifolds

We consider braids on $m+n$ strands, such that the first $m$ strands are trivially fixed. We denote the set of all such braids by $B_{m,n}$. Via concatenation $B_{m,n}$ acquires a group structure. The objective of this paper is to find a presentation for $B_{m,n}$ using the structure of its corresponding pure braid subgroup, $P_{m,n}$, and the fact that it is a subgroup of the classical Artin group $B_{m+n}$. Then we give an irredundant presentation for $B_{m,n}$. The paper concludes by showing that these braid groups or appropriate cosets of them are related to knots in handlebodies, in knot complements and in c.c.o. 3--manifolds.
