Chiral anomaly induced nonlinear Nernst and thermal Hall effects in Weyl semimetals

Chiral anomaly or Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) has a significant impact on the electron transport behaviors, leading to remarkable longitudinal or planar electrical and thermoelectric transport phenomena in the presence of electromagnetic gauge fields. These phenomena are consequences of the imbalanced chiral charge and energy induced by chiral anomaly in the presence of parallel electric ($\mathbf{E}$) and magnetic ($\mathbf{B}$) fields ($\mathbf{E \cdot B }\neq 0$) or $(\mathbf{B \cdot \nabla }T\neq 0)$ ($\mathbf{\nabla}T$ is the thermal gradient). We here propose another two fascinating transport properties, namely, the nonlinear planar Nernst effect and nonlinear planar thermal Hall effect induced by chiral anomaly in the presence of $\mathbf{B \cdot \nabla}T\neq 0$ in WSMs. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory, we derive the analytical expressions for the chiral anomaly induced nonlinear Nernst and thermal Hall transport coefficients and also evaluate the fundamental mathematical relations among them in the nonlinear regime. The formulas we find in this current work are consistent with that predicted for the nonlinear anomalous electrical and thermoelectric effects induced by Berry curvature dipole recently. Additionally, in contrast to the recent work, by utilizing the lattice Weyl Hamiltonian with intrinsic chiral chemical potential, we find that the chiral anomaly induced nonlinear planar effects can exist even for a pair of oppositely tilted or non-tilted Weyl cones in both time reversal and inversion broken WSMs. The chiral anomaly induced nonlinear planar effects predicted here along with the related parameter dependencies are hence possible to be realized in realistic WSMs in experiment.

Higher-order topological phases on fractal lattices

Electronic materials harbor a plethora of exotic quantum phases, ranging from unconventional superconductors to non-Fermi liquids, and, more recently, topological phases of matter. While these quantum phases in integer dimensions are well characterized by now, their presence in fractional dimensions remains vastly unexplored. Here, we theoretically show that a special class of crystalline phases, namely, higher-order topological phases that via an extended bulk-boundary correspondence feature robust gapless modes on lower dimensional boundaries, such as corners and hinges, can be found on a representative family of fractional materials: \emph{quantum fractals}. To anchor this general proposal, we demonstrate realizations of second-order topological insulators and superconductors, supporting charged and neutral Majorana corner modes, on planar Sierpiński carpet and triangle fractals, respectively. These predictions can be experimentally tested on designer electronic fractal materials, as well as on various highly tunable metamaterial platforms, such as photonic and acoustic lattices.

Chirality-dependent planar Hall effect in inhomogeneous Weyl semimetals

The planar Hall effect (PHE), the appearance of an in-plane transverse voltage in the presence of co-planar electric ($\mathbf{E}$) and magnetic ($\mathbf{B}$) fields, occurs in regular Weyl semimetals (WSMs) as one of the fundamental manifestations of chiral anomaly. A major issue, therefore, is whether there are alternate route to PHE, without invoking chiral anomaly. We demonstrate that PHE exists in an inhomogeneous Weyl semimetal (IWSM) even in the absence of the aforesaid anomaly. Using semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory, we show that PHE appears in an IWSM due to the strain-induced chiral gauge potential, which couples to the Weyl fermions of opposite chirality with opposite sign. Our study shows a resultant phase shift in the current associated with opposite chirality Weyl nodes, which, remarkably, leads to a finite chirality-dependent planar Hall effect (CPHE) in the IWSMs. Interestingly, we show that a small tilt in the Weyl node can generate a pure CPHE even in the absence of an applied magnetic field. The CPHE has important implications in `chiralitytronics'. We also discuss the experimental feasibility of these novel effects of strain in type-I IWSMs.
