Off-axis digital holography is used to align a few-mode fiber to a multi-mode fiber in a free-space optical setup. Alignment based on power coupling measurements alone cannot guarantee low mode-dependent loss. The proposed alignment method enables reliable fiber coupling with low mode-dependent loss and crosstalk.
Mode diversity reception is experimentally investigated using an optical turbulence generator, off-axis digital holography, and digital demultiplexing. The results confirm improved fibre coupling efficiency when receiving the optical field using a multi-mode fibre instead of a single-mode fibre under turbulent conditions, specifically beam wander. The coupling loss is reduced by receiving additional modes.
A predistorter for transmitter nonlinearities is applied to the evaluation of a geometrically shaped constellation, such that constellation points are transmitted correctly during the evaluation of the geometrically shaped constellation.

A software-defined optical receiver is implemented on an off-the-shelf commercial graphics processing unit (GPU). The receiver provides real-time signal processing functionality to process 1 GBaud minimum phase (MP) 4-, 8-, 16-, 32-, 64-, 128-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) as well as geometrically shaped (GS) 8- and 128-QAM signals using Kramers-Kronig (KK) coherent detection. Experimental validation of this receiver over a 91~km field-deployed optical fiber link between two Tokyo locations is shown with detailed optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) investigations. A net data rate of 5 Gbps using 64-QAM is demonstrated.
Real-time operation of a software-defined, GPU-based optical receiver is demonstrated over a 100-span straight-line optical link. Performance of minimum-phase Kramers-Kronig 4-, 8-, 16-, 32-, and 64-QAM signals are evaluated at various distances.
We introduce a flexible, software-defined real-time multi-modulation format receiver implemented on an off-the-shelf general-purpose graphics processing unit (GPU). The flexible receiver is able to process 2 GBaud 2-, 4-, 8-, and 16-ary pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) signals as well as 1 GBaud 4-, 16- and 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals, with the latter detected using a Kramers-Kronig (KK) coherent receiver. Experimental performance evaluation is shown for back-to-back. In addition, by using the JGN high speed R&D network testbed, performance is evaluated after transmission over 91 km field-deployed optical fiber and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs).
A Kramers-Kronig receiver with a continuous wave tone added digitally at the transmitter is combined with a digital resolution enhancer to limit the increase in transmitter quantization noise. Performance increase is demonstrated, as well as the ability to reduce the number of bits in the digital-to-analog converter.
The increase in capacity provided by coupled SDM systems is fundamentally limited by MDG and ASE noise. Therefore, monitoring MDG and optical SNR is essential for accurate performance evaluation and troubleshooting. Recent works show that the conventional MDG estimation method based on the transfer matrix of MIMO equalizers optimizing the MMSE underestimates the actual value at low SNR. Besides, estimating the optical SNR itself is not a trivial task in SDM systems, as MDG strongly influences the electrical SNR after the equalizer. In a recent work we propose an MDG and SNR estimation method using ANN. The proposed ANN-based method processes features extracted at the receiver after DSP. In this paper, we discuss the ANN-based method in detail, and validate it in an experimental 73-km 3-mode transmission link with controlled MDG and SNR. After validation, we apply the method in a case study consisting of an experimental long-haul 6-mode link. The results show that the ANN estimates both MDG and SNR with high accuracy, outperforming conventional methods.
We propose a neural network model for MDG and optical SNR estimation in SDM transmission. We show that the proposed neural-network-based solution estimates MDG and SNR with high accuracy and low complexity from features extracted after DSP.
We demonstrate 1 Tbit/s/$λ$ single-span transmission over a heterogeneous link consisting of graded-index 50 $μ$m core multi-mode fiber and 6LP few-mode fiber using a Kramers-Kronig receiver structure. Furthermore, the link budget increase by transmitting only three modes while employing more than three receivers is investigated.
We experimentally validate a mode-dependent loss (MDL) estimation technique employing acorrection factor to remove the MDL estimation dependence on the SNR when using a minimum meansquare error (MMSE) equalizer. A reduction of the MDL estimation error is observed for both transmitter-side and in-span MDL emulation.
We demonstrate stable real-time operation of a software-defined, GPU-based receiver over a metropolitan network. Massive parallelization is exploited for implementing direct-detection and coherent Kramers-Kronig detection in real time at 2 and 1 GBaud, respectively.
Efficient nonlinearity compensation in fiber-optic communication systems is considered a key element to go beyond the "capacity crunch''. One guiding principle for previous work on the design of practical nonlinearity compensation schemes is that fewer steps lead to better systems. In this paper, we challenge this assumption and show how to carefully design multi-step approaches that provide better performance--complexity trade-offs than their few-step counterparts. We consider the recently proposed learned digital backpropagation (LDBP) approach, where the linear steps in the split-step method are re-interpreted as general linear functions, similar to the weight matrices in a deep neural network. Our main contribution lies in an experimental demonstration of this approach for a 25 Gbaud single-channel optical transmission system. It is shown how LDBP can be integrated into a coherent receiver DSP chain and successfully trained in the presence of various hardware impairments. Our results show that LDBP with limited complexity can achieve better performance than standard DBP by using very short, but jointly optimized, finite-impulse response filters in each step. This paper also provides an overview of recently proposed extensions of LDBP and we comment on potentially interesting avenues for future work.
Using a novel geometrically-shaped four-dimensional modulation format, we transmitted 11x200 Gbit/s DWDM at 4.8 bit/4D-sym over 7,925 km and 11,700 km using EDFA-only and hybrid amplification, respectively. A reach increase of 16% is achieved over PM-8QAM.
Current optical coherent transponders technology is driving data rates towards 1 Tb/s/λand beyond. This trend requires both high-performance coded modulation schemes and efficient implementation of the forward-error-correction (FEC) decoder. A possible solution to this problem is combining advanced multidimensional modulation formats with low-complexity hybrid HD/SD FEC decoders. Following this rationale, in this paper we combine two recently introduced coded modulation techniques:the geometrically-shaped 4D-64 polarization ring-switched and the soft-aided bit-marking-scaled reliability decoder. This joint scheme enabled us to experimentally demonstrate the transmission of 11x218 Gbit/s channels over transatlantic distances at 5.2bit/4D-sym. Furthermore, a 30% reach increase is demonstrated over PM-8QAM and conventional HD-FEC decoding for product codes.
We transmit probabilistic enumerative sphere shaped dual-polarization 64-QAM at 350Gbit/s/channel over 1610km SSMF using a short blocklength of 200. A reach increase of 15% over constant composition distribution matching with identical blocklength is demonstrated.
