In-silico synthesis of lowest-pressure high-TcT_\text{c} ternary superhydrides

We report the theoretical prediction of two high-performing hydride superconductors BaSiH8_8 and SrSiH8_8. They are thermodynamically stable above pressures of 130130 and 174 GPa174\,\text{GPa}, respectively, and metastable below that. Employing anharmonic phonon calculations, we determine the minimum pressures of dynamical stability to be around 3 GPa3\,\text{GPa} for BaSiH8_8 and 27 GPa27\,\text{GPa} for SrSiH8_8, and using the fully anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory, we predict TcT_\text{c}'s around 7171 and 126 K126\,\text{K}, respectively. We also introduce a method to estimate the lowest pressure of synthesis, based on the calculation of the enthalpy barriers protecting the BaSiH8_8 Fm3ˉmFm\bar{3}m structure from decomposition at various pressures. This kinetickinetic pressure threshold is sensibly higher than the one based on dynamicdynamic stability, but gives a much more rigorous limit for synthesizability.

Mapping Superconductivity in High-Pressure Hydrides: The SuperhydraSuperhydra Project

The discovery of high-TcT_c conventional superconductivity in high-pressure hydrides has helped establish computational methods as a formidable tool to guide material discoveries in a field traditionally dominated by serendipitous experimental search. This paves the way to an ever-increasing use of data-driven approaches to the study and design of superconductors. In this work, we propose a new method to generate meaningful datasets of superconductors, based on element substitution into a small set of representative structural templates, generated by crystal structure prediction methods (MultiTemplate-HighThroughput approach). Our approach realizes an optimal compromise between structural variety and computational efficiency, and can be easily generalized to other elements and compositions. As a first application, we apply it to binary hydrides at high pressure, realizing a database of 880 hypothetical structures, characterized with a set of electronic, vibrational and chemical descriptors. 139 structures of our SuperhydraSuperhydra Database are superconducting according to the McMillan-Allen-Dynes approximation. Studying the distribution of TcT_c and other properties across the database with advanced statistical and visualization techniques, we are able to obtain comprehensive material maps of the phase space of binary hydrides. The SuperhydraSuperhydra database can be thought as a first step of a generalized effort to map conventional superconductivity.

High-Tc_c Superconductivity in doped boron-carbon clathrates

We report a high-throughput ab-initio study of the thermodynamic and superconducting proper- ties of the recently synthesized XB3_3C3_3 clathrates. These compounds, in which boron and carbon form a sponge-like network of interconnected cages each enclosing a central X atom, are attractive candidates to achieve high-Tc conventional superconductivity at ambient pressure, due to the simultaneous presence of a stiff B-C covalent network and a tunable charge reservoir, provided by the guest atom. Ternary compounds like CaB3_3C3_3, SrB3_3C3_3 and BaB3_3C3_3 are predicted to exhibit Tc_c <\lt 50 K at moderate or ambient pressures, which may further increase up to 77 K if the original compounds are hole-doped by replacing the divalent alkaline earth with a monovalent alkali metal to form ordered XYXYB6_6C6_6 alloys.

Importance of feature engineering and database selection in a machine learning model: A case study on carbon crystal structures

Drive towards improved performance of machine learning models has led to the creation of complex features representing a database of condensed matter systems. The complex features, however, do not offer an intuitive explanation on which physical attributes do improve the performance. The effect of the database on the performance of the trained model is often neglected. In this work we seek to understand in depth the effect that the choice of features and the properties of the database have on a machine learning application. In our experiments, we consider the complex phase space of carbon as a test case, for which we use a set of simple, human understandable and cheaply computable features for the aim of predicting the total energy of the crystal structure. Our study shows that (i) the performance of the machine learning model varies depending on the set of features and the database, (ii) is not transferable to every structure in the phase space and (iii) depends on how well structures are represented in the database.

High-Temperature Conventional Superconductivity in the Boron-Carbon system: Material Trends

In this work we probe the possibility of high-temperature conventional superconductivity in the boron-carbon system, using ab-initio screening. A database of 320 metastable structures with fixed composition (50%\%/50%\%) is generated with the Minima-Hopping method, and characterized with electronic and vibrational descriptors. Full electron-phonon calculations on sixteen representative structures allow to identify general trends in TcT_{\textrm{c}} across and within the four families in the energy landscape, and to construct an approximate TcT_{\textrm{c}} predictor, based on transparently interpretable and easily computable electronic and vibrational descriptors. Based on these, we estimate that around 10%\% of all metallic structures should exhibit TcT_{\textrm{c}}'s above 30 KK. This work is a first step towards ab-initio design of new high-TcT_{\textrm{c}} superconductors.

Phase Diagram and Superconductivity of Calcium Borohyrides at Extreme Pressures

Motivated by the recent discovery of near-room temperature superconductivity in high-pressure superhydrides, we investigate from first-principles the high-pressure superconducting phase diagram of the ternary Ca-B-H system, using ab-initio evolutionary crystal structure prediction, and Density Functional Perturbation Theory. We find that below 100 GPa all stable and weakly metastable phases are insulating. This pressure marks the appearance of several new chemically-forbidden phases on the hull of stability, and the first onset of metalization in CaBH5_5. Metallization is then gradually achieved at higher pressure at different compositions. Among the metallic phases stable in the Megabar regime, we predict two high-TcT_c superconducting phases with CaBH6_6 and Ca2_2B2_2H13_{13} compositions, with critical temperatures of 119 and 89 K at 300 GPa, respectively, surviving to lower pressures. Ternary hydrides will most likely play a major role in superconductivity research in the coming years; our study suggests that, in order to reduce the pressure for the onset of metallicity and superconductivity, further explorations of ternary hydrides should focus on elements less electronegative than boron.
