Multi-Depot Multi-Trip Vehicle Routing with Total Completion Time Minimization

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are aircraft whose flights can be fully autonomous without any provision for human intervention. One of the most useful and promising domains where UAVs can be employed is natural disaster management. In this paper, we focus on an emergency scenario and propose the use of a fleet of UAVs that help rescue teams to individuate people needing help inside an affected area. We model this situation as an original graph theoretical problem called Multi-Depot Multi-Trip Vehicle Routing Problem with Total Completion Times minimization (MDMT-VRP-TCT); we go through some problems already studied in the literature that appear somehow similar to it and highlight the differences, propose a mathematical formulation for our problem as a MILP, design a matheuristic framework to quickly solve large instances, and experimentally test its performance. Beyond the proposed application, our solution works in any case in which a multi-depot multi-trip vehicle routing problem must be solved.

On the exponential convergence rate for a non-gradient Fokker-Planck equation in Computational Neuroscience

This paper concerns the proof of the exponential rate of convergence of the solution of a Fokker-Planck equation, with a drift term not being the gradient of a potential function and endowed by Robin type boundary conditions. This kind of problem arises, for example, in the study of interacting neurons populations. Previous studies have numerically shown that, after a small period of time, the solution of the evolution problem exponentially converges to the stable state of the equation.

Study of a degenerate reaction-diffusion system arising in particle dynamics with aggregation effects

In this paper we are interested in a degenerate parabolic system of reaction-diffusion equations arising in biology when studying cell adhesion at the protein level. In this modeling the unknown is the couple of the distribution laws of the freely diffusing proteins and of the fixed ones. Under sufficient conditions on the aggregation and unbinding probabilities, we prove the existence of solution of the considered system, as well as their positivity, boundedness and uniqueness. Moreover, we discuss the stability of the equilibrium solution. Finally, we show that the simpler and particular choice of an affine aggregation function and of a constant unbinding probability do not lead to pattern formation as expected in the application. These analytical results are also supported by some numerical simulation.

Complexity Reduction of Rate-Equations Models for Two-Choice Decision-Making

We are concerned with the complexity reduction of a stochastic system of differential equations governing the dynamics of a neuronal circuit describing a decision-making task. This reduction is based on the slow-fast behavior of the problem and holds on the whole phase space and not only locally around the spontaneous state. Macroscopic quantities, such as performance and reaction times, computed applying this reduction are in agreement with previous works in which the complexity reduction is locally performed at the spontaneous point by means of a Taylor expansion.

One dimensional Fokker-Planck reduced dynamics of decision making models in Computational Neuroscience

We study a Fokker-Planck equation modelling the firing rates of two interacting populations of neurons. This model arises in computational neuroscience when considering, for example, bistable visual perception problems and is based on a stochastic Wilson-Cowan system of differential equations. In a previous work, the slow-fast behavior of the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation has been highlighted. Our aim is to demonstrate that the complexity of the model can be drastically reduced using this slow-fast structure. In fact, we can derive a one-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation that describes the evolution of the solution along the so-called slow manifold. This permits to have a direct efficient determination of the equilibrium state and its effective potential, and thus to investigate its dependencies with respect to various parameters of the model. It also allows to obtain information about the time escaping behavior. The results obtained for the reduced 1D equation are validated with those of the original 2D equation both for equilibrium and transient behavior.
