Adiabatic spin dynamics and effective exchange interactions from constrained tight-binding electronic structure theory: Beyond the Heisenberg regime

We consider an implementation of the adiabatic spin dynamics approach in a tight-binding description of the electronic structure. The adiabatic approximation for spin-degrees of freedom assumes that the faster electronic degrees of freedom are always in a quasi-equilibrium state, which significantly reduces the numerical complexity in comparison to the full electron dynamics. Non-collinear magnetic configurations are stabilized by a constraining field, which allows to directly obtain the effective magnetic field from the negative of the constraining field. While the dynamics are shown to conserve energy, we demonstrate that adiabatic spin dynamics does not conserve the total spin angular momentum when the lengths of the magnetic moments are allowed to change, which is confirmed by numerical simulations. Furthermore, we develop a method to extract an effective two-spin exchange interaction from the energy curvature tensor of non-collinear states, which we calculate at each time step of the numerical simulations. We demonstrate the effect of non-collinearity on this effective exchange and limitations due to multi-spin interactions in strongly non-collinear configurations beyond the regime where the Heisenberg model is valid. The relevance of the results are discussed with respect to experimental pump-probe experiments that follow the ultra-fast dynamics of magnetism.

Angular Momentum Conservation and Phonon Spin in Magnetic Insulators

We develop a microscopic theory of spin-lattice interactions in magnetic insulators, separating rigid-body rotations and the internal angular momentum, or spin, of the phonons, while conserving the total angular momentum. In the low-energy limit, the microscopic couplings are mapped onto experimentally accessible magnetoelastic constants. We show that the transient phonon spin contribution of the excited system can dominate over the magnon spin, leading to nontrivial Einstein-de Haas physics.

Equation of motion and the constraining field in ab initio spin dynamics

It is generally accepted that the effective magnetic field acting on a magnetic moment is given by the gradient of the energy with respect to the magnetization. However, in ab initio spin dynamics within the adiabatic approximation, the effective field is also known to be exactly the negative of the constraining field, which acts as a Lagrange multiplier to stabilize an out-of-equilibrium, non-collinear magnetic configuration. We show that for Hamiltonians without mean-field parameters both of these fields are exactly equivalent, while there can be a finite difference for mean-field Hamiltonians. For density-functional theory (DFT) calculations the constraining field obtained from the auxiliary Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian is not exactly equivalent to the DFT energy gradient. This inequality is highly relevant for both ab initio spin dynamics and the ab initio calculation of exchange constants and effective magnetic Hamiltonians. We argue that the effective magnetic field and exchange constants have the highest accuracy in DFT when calculated from the energy gradient and not from the constraining field.

Hard-core boson approach to the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ at finite temperatures in magnetic fields higher than the saturation field

We study the high magnetic field regime of the antiferromagnetic insulator Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ by expressing the spin-1/2 operators in the relevant Heisenberg model in terms of hard-core bosons and implementing the hard-core constraint via an infinite on-site interaction. We focus on the case where the external magnetic field exceeds the saturation field $B_{c}\approx8.5\;\mathrm{T}$ and is oriented along the crystallographic $a$ axis perpendicular to the lattice plane. Because in this case the excited states are separated by an energy gap from the ground state, we may use the self-consistent ladder approximation to take the strong correlations due to the hard-core constraint into account. In Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ there are additional interactions besides the hard-core interaction which we treat in self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. We calculate the spectral function of the hard-core bosons from which we obtain the in-plane components of the dynamic structure factor, the magnetic susceptibility, and the specific heat. Our results for the specific heat are in good agreement with the available experimental data. We conclude that the self-consistent ladder approximation in combination with a self-consistent Hartree-Fock decoupling of the non-hard-core interactions gives an accurate description of the physical properties of gapped hard-core bosons in two dimensions at finite temperatures.

Majorana spin liquid and dimensional reduction in Cs2CuCl4

The low-temperature behavior of the magnetic insulator Cs2CuCl4 can be modeled by an anisotropic triangular lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with two different exchange couplings J and J' = J/3. We show that in a wide range of magnetic fields the experimentally observed field dependence of the crossover temperature T_c for spin-liquid behavior can be explained within a mean-field theory based on the representation of spin operators in terms of Majorana fermions. We also show that for small magnetic fields the specific heat and the spin susceptibility both exhibit a maximum as a function of temperature at T_c = J/2. In the spin-liquid regime, the Majorana fermions can only propagate along the direction of the strongest bond, in agreement with the dimensional reduction scenario advanced by Balents [Nature (London) 464, 199 (2010)].

Solution of the Anderson impurity model via the functional renormalization group

We show that the functional renormalization group is a numerically cheap method to obtain the low-energy behavior of the Anderson impurity model describing a localized interacting electron coupled to a bath of conduction electrons. Our approach uses an external magnetic field as flow parameter, partial bosonization of the transverse spin fluctuations, and frequency-independent interaction vertices which are fixed by Ward identities. We calculate the quasi-particle residue and the spin susceptibility in the particle-hole symmetric case and obtain excellent agreement with the Bethe ansatz results for arbitrary strengths of the interaction.
