Hecke action on the principal block

In this paper we construct an action of the affine Hecke category (in its "Soergel bimodules" incarnation) on the principal block of representations of a simply-connected semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic bigger than the Coxeter number. This confirms a conjecture of G. Williamson and the second author, and provides a new proof of the tilting character formula in terms of antispherical $p$-Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Integral exotic sheaves and the modular Lusztig-Vogan bijection

Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field k of very good characteristic. The Lusztig-Vogan bijection is a bijection between the set of dominant weights for G and the set of irreducible G-equivariant vector bundles on nilpotent orbits, conjectured by Lusztig and Vogan independently, and constructed in full generality by Bezrukavnikov. In characteristic 0, this bijection is related to the theory of 2-sided cells in the affine Weyl group, and plays a key role in the proof of the Humphreys conjecture on support varieties of tilting modules for quantum groups at a root of unity. In this paper, we prove that the Lusztig-Vogan bijection is (in a way made precise in the body of the paper) independent of the characteristic of k. This allows us to extend all of its known properties from the characteristic-0 setting to the general case. We also expect this result to be a step towards a proof of the Humphreys conjecture on support varieties of tilting modules for reductive groups in positive characteristic.

Smith-Treumann theory and the linkage principle

We apply Treumann's "Smith theory for sheaves" in the context of the Iwahori--Whittaker model of the Satake category. We deduce two results in the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups over fields of positive characteristic: (a) a geometric proof of the linkage principle; (b) a character formula for tilting modules in terms of the $\ell$-canonical basis, valid in all blocks and in all characteristics.

A simple character formula

In this paper we prove a character formula expressing the classes of simple representations in the principal block of a simply-connected semisimple algebraic group G in terms of baby Verma modules, under the assumption that the characteristic of the base field is bigger than 2h-1, where h is the Coxeter number of G. This provides a replacement for Lusztig's conjecture, valid under a reasonable assumption on the characteristic.

A topological approach to Soergel theory

We develop a "Soergel theory" for Bruhat-constructible perverse sheaves on the flag variety $G/B$ of a complex reductive group $G$, with coefficients in an arbitrary field $\Bbbk$. Namely, we describe the endomorphisms of the projective cover of the skyscraper sheaf in terms of a "multiplicative" coinvariant algebra, and then establish an equivalence of categories between projective (or tilting) objects in this category and a certain category of "Soergel modules" over this algebra. We also obtain a description of the derived category of $T$-monodromic $\Bbbk$-sheaves on $G/U$ (where $U$, $T\subset B$ are the unipotent radical and the maximal torus), as a monoidal category, in terms of coherent sheaves on the formal neighborhood of the base point in $T^\vee_\Bbbk \times_{(T^\vee_\Bbbk)^W} T^\vee_\Bbbk$, where $T^\vee_\Bbbk$ is the $\Bbbk$-torus dual to $T$.

Exotic tilting sheaves, parity sheaves on affine Grassmannians, and the Mirkovic-Vilonen conjecture

Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$ of good characteristic, satisfying some mild conditions. In this paper we relate tilting objects in the heart of Bezrukavnikov's exotic t-structure on the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution of $\mathbf{G}$, and Iwahori-constructible $\mathbb{F}$-parity sheaves on the affine Grassmannian of the Langlands dual group. As applications we deduce in particular the missing piece for the proof of the Mirkovic-Vilonen conjecture in full generality (i.e. for good characteristic), a modular version of an equivalence of categories due to Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov-Ginzburg, and an extension of this equivalence.

Geometric Satake, Springer correspondence, and small representations II

For a split reductive group scheme $G$ over a commutative ring $k$ with Weyl group $W$, there is an important functor $Rep(G,k) \to Rep(W,k)$ defined by taking the zero weight space. We prove that the restriction of this functor to the subcategory of small representations has an alternative geometric description, in terms of the affine Grassmannian and the nilpotent cone of the Langlands dual group to $G$. The translation from representation theory to geometry is via the Satake equivalence and the Springer correspondence. This generalizes the result for the $k=\mathbb{C}$ case proved by the first two authors, and also provides a better explanation than in that earlier paper, since the current proof is uniform across all types.

Kostant section, universal centralizer, and a modular derived Satake equivalence

We prove analogues of fundamental results of Kostant on the universal centralizer of a connected reductive algebraic group for algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic (with mild assumptions), and for integral coefficients. As an application, we use these results to obtain a "mixed modular" analogue of the derived Satake equivalence of Bezrukavnikov-Finkelberg.

Linear Koszul duality and Fourier transform for convolution algebras

In this paper we prove that the linear Koszul duality isomorphism for convolution algebras in K-homology defined in a previous paper and the Fourier transform isomorphism for convolution algebras in Borel-Moore homology are related by the Chern character. So, Koszul duality appears as a categorical upgrade of Fourier transform of constructible sheaves. This result explains the connection between the categorification of the Iwahori-Matsumoto involution for graded affine Hecke algebras (due to Evens and the first author) and for usual affine Hecke algebras (obtained in a previous paper).

Modular perverse sheaves on flag varieties I: tilting and parity sheaves

In this paper we prove that the category of parity complexes on the flag variety of a complex connected reductive group is a "graded version" of the category of tilting perverse sheaves on the flag variety of the dual group, for any field of coefficients whose characteristic is good. We derive some consequences on Soergel's modular category O, and on multiplicities and decomposition numbers in the category of perverse sheaves.

On the exotic t-structure in positive characteristic

In this paper we study Bezrukavnikov's exotic t-structure on the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution of a connected reductive algebraic group defined over a field of positive characteristic with simply-connected derived subgroup. In particular, we show that the heart of the exotic t-structure is a graded highest weight category, and we study the tilting objects in this heart. Our main tool is the "geometric braid group action" studied by Bezrukavnikov and the second author.

Differential operators on G/U and the affine Grassmannian

We describe the equivariant cohomology of cofibers of spherical perverse sheaves on the affine Grassmannian of a reductive algebraic group in terms of the geometry of the Langlands dual group. In fact we give two equivalent descriptions: one in terms of D-modules of the basic affine space, and one in terms of intertwining operators for universal Verma modules. We also construct natural collections of isomorphisms parametrized by the Weyl group in these three contexts, and prove that they are compatible with our isomorphisms. As applications we reprove some results of the first author and of Braverman-Finkelberg.

preprint2014arXiv

Iwahori-Matsumoto involution and linear Koszul Duality

We use linear Koszul duality, a geometric version of the standard duality between modules over symmetric and exterior algebras studied in previous papers of the authors to give a geometric realization of the Iwahori-Matsumoto involution of affine Hecke algebras. More generally we prove that linear Koszul duality is compatible with convolution in a general context related to convolution algebras.

preprint2014arXiv

Modular generalized Springer correspondence I: the general linear group

We define a generalized Springer correspondence for the group GL(n) over any field. We also determine the cuspidal pairs, and compute the correspondence explicitly. Finally we define a stratification of the category of equivariant perverse sheaves on the nilpotent cone of GL(n) satisfying the `recollement' properties, and with subquotients equivalent to categories of representations of a product of symmetric groups.

Modular perverse sheaves on flag varieties II: Koszul duality and formality

Building on the theory of parity sheaves due to Juteau-Mautner-Williamson, we develop a formalism of "mixed modular perverse sheaves" for varieties equipped with a stratification by affine spaces. We then give two applications: (1) a "Koszul-type" derived equivalence relating a given flag variety to the Langlands dual flag variety, and (2) a formality theorem for the modular derived category of a flag variety (extending a previous result of Riche-Soergel-Williamson).

Hopf algebras having a dense big cell

We discuss some axioms that ensure that a Hopf algebra has its simple comodules classified using an analogue of the Borel-Weil construction. More precisely we show that a Hopf algebra having a dense big cell satisfies the above requirement. This method has its roots in the work of Parshall and Wang in the case of q-deformed quantum groups GL and SL. Here we examine the example of universal cosovereign Hopf algebras, for which the weight group is the free group on two generators.

Weyl group actions on the Springer sheaf

We show that two Weyl group actions on the Springer sheaf with arbitrary coefficients, one defined by Fourier transform and one by restriction, agree up to a twist by the sign character. This generalizes a familiar result from the setting of l-adic cohomology, making it applicable to modular representation theory. We use the Weyl group actions to define a Springer correspondence in this generality, and identify the zero weight spaces of small representations in terms of this Springer correspondence.

preprint2012arXiv

Modular Koszul duality

We prove an analogue of Koszul duality for category $\mathcal{O}$ of a reductive group $G$ in positive characteristic $\ell$ larger than 1 plus the number of roots of $G$. However there are no Koszul rings, and we do not prove an analogue of the Kazhdan--Lusztig conjectures in this context. The main technical result is the formality of the dg-algebra of extensions of parity sheaves on the flag variety if the characteristic of the coefficients is at least the number of roots of $G$ plus 2.

Affine braid group actions on derived categories of Springer resolutions

In this paper we construct and study an action of the affine braid group associated to a semi-simple algebraic group on derived categories of coherent sheaves on various varieties related to the Springer resolution of the nilpotent cone. In particular, we describe explicitly the action of the Artin braid group. This action is a "categorical version" of Kazhdan--Lusztig--Ginzburg's construction of the affine Hecke algebra, and is used in particular by the first author and Ivan Mirkovic in the course of the proof of Lusztig's conjectures on equivariant K-theory of Springer fibers.

Koszul duality and Frobenius structure for restricted enveloping algebras

Let g be the Lie algebra of a connected, simply connected semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of sufficiently large positive characteristic. We study the compatibility between the Koszul grading on the restricted enveloping algebra (Ug)_0 of g constructed in a previous paper, and the structure of Frobenius algebra of (Ug)_0. This answers a question raised to the author by W. Soergel.
