Geometric Satake, Springer correspondence, and small representations II

For a split reductive group scheme $G$ over a commutative ring $k$ with Weyl group $W$, there is an important functor $Rep(G,k) \to Rep(W,k)$ defined by taking the zero weight space. We prove that the restriction of this functor to the subcategory of small representations has an alternative geometric description, in terms of the affine Grassmannian and the nilpotent cone of the Langlands dual group to $G$. The translation from representation theory to geometry is via the Satake equivalence and the Springer correspondence. This generalizes the result for the $k=\mathbb{C}$ case proved by the first two authors, and also provides a better explanation than in that earlier paper, since the current proof is uniform across all types.

Singularities of nilpotent orbit closures

This is an expository article on the singularities of nilpotent orbit closures in simple Lie algebras over the complex numbers. It is slanted towards aspects that are relevant for representation theory, including Maffei's theorem relating Slodowy slices to Nakajima quiver varieties in type A. There is one new observation: the results of Juteau and Mautner, combined with Maffei's theorem, give a geometric proof of a result on decomposition numbers of Schur algebras due to Fang, Henke and Koenig.

Diagram automorphisms of quiver varieties

We show that the fixed-point subvariety of a Nakajima quiver variety under a diagram automorphism is a disconnected union of quiver varieties for the `split-quotient quiver' introduced by Reiten and Riedtmann. As a special case, quiver varieties of type D arise as the connected components of fixed-point subvarieties of diagram involutions of quiver varieties of type A. In the case where the quiver varieties of type A correspond to small self-dual representations, we show that the diagram involutions coincide with classical involutions of two-row Slodowy varieties. It follows that certain quiver varieties of type D are isomorphic to Slodowy varieties for orthogonal or symplectic Lie algebras.

Modular generalized Springer correspondence I: the general linear group

We define a generalized Springer correspondence for the group GL(n) over any field. We also determine the cuspidal pairs, and compute the correspondence explicitly. Finally we define a stratification of the category of equivariant perverse sheaves on the nilpotent cone of GL(n) satisfying the `recollement' properties, and with subquotients equivalent to categories of representations of a product of symmetric groups.

Weyl group actions on the Springer sheaf

We show that two Weyl group actions on the Springer sheaf with arbitrary coefficients, one defined by Fourier transform and one by restriction, agree up to a twist by the sign character. This generalizes a familiar result from the setting of l-adic cohomology, making it applicable to modular representation theory. We use the Weyl group actions to define a Springer correspondence in this generality, and identify the zero weight spaces of small representations in terms of this Springer correspondence.

Geometric Satake, Springer correspondence, and small representations

For a simply-connected simple algebraic group $G$ over $\C$, we exhibit a subvariety of its affine Grassmannian that is closely related to the nilpotent cone of $G$, generalizing a well-known fact about $GL_n$. Using this variety, we construct a sheaf-theoretic functor that, when combined with the geometric Satake equivalence and the Springer correspondence, leads to a geometric explanation for a number of known facts (mostly due to Broer and Reeder) about small representations of the dual group.

Unimodality of Eulerian quasisymmetric functions

We prove two conjectures of Shareshian and Wachs about Eulerian quasisymmetric functions and polynomials. The first states that the cycle type Eulerian quasisymmetric function $Q_{λ,j}$ is Schur-positive, and moreover that the sequence $Q_{λ,j}$ as $j$ varies is Schur-unimodal. The second conjecture, which we prove using the first, states that the cycle type $(q,p)$-Eulerian polynomial \newline $A_λ^{\maj,\des,\exc}(q,p,q^{-1}t)$ is $t$-unimodal.

Corrigendum to `Orbit closures in the enhanced nilpotent cone', published in Adv. Math. 219 (2008)

In this note, we point out an error in the proof of Theorem 4.7 of [P. Achar and A.~Henderson, `Orbit closures in the enhanced nilpotent cone', Adv. Math. 219 (2008), 27-62], a statement about the existence of affine pavings for fibres of a certain resolution of singularities of an enhanced nilpotent orbit closure. We also give independent proofs of later results that depend on that statement, so all other results of that paper remain valid.

Exterior powers of the reflection representation in the cohomology of Springer fibres

Let $H^*(\calB_e)$ be the cohomology of the Springer fibre for the nilpotent element $e$ in a simple Lie algebra $\g$, on which the Weyl group $W$ acts by the Springer representation. Let $Λ^i V$ denote the $i$th exterior power of the reflection representation of $W$. We determine the degrees in which $Λ^i V$ occurs in the graded representation $H^*(\calB_e)$, under the assumption that $e$ is regular in a Levi subalgebra and satisfies a certain extra condition which holds automatically if $\g$ is of type A, B, or C. This partially verifies a conjecture of Lehrer--Shoji, and extends the results of Solomon in the $e=0$ case and Lehrer--Shoji in the $i=1$ case. The proof proceeds by showing that $(H^*(\calB_e) \otimes Λ^* V)^W$ is a free exterior algebra on its subspace $(H^*(\calB_e)\otimes V)^W$.

Normality of orbit closures in the enhanced nilpotent cone

We continue the study of the closures of $GL(V)$-orbits in the enhanced nilpotent cone $V\times\cN$ begun by the first two authors. We prove that each closure is an invariant-theoretic quotient of a suitably-defined enhanced quiver variety. We conjecture, and prove in special cases, that these enhanced quiver varieties are normal complete intersections, implying that the enhanced nilpotent orbit closures are also normal.

Orbit closures in the enhanced nilpotent cone

We study the orbits of $G=\mathrm{GL}(V)$ in the enhanced nilpotent cone $V\times\mathcal{N}$, where $\mathcal{N}$ is the variety of nilpotent endomorphisms of $V$. These orbits are parametrized by bipartitions of $n=\dim V$, and we prove that the closure ordering corresponds to a natural partial order on bipartitions. Moreover, we prove that the local intersection cohomology of the orbit closures is given by certain bipartition analogues of Kostka polynomials, defined by Shoji. Finally, we make a connection with Kato's exotic nilpotent cone in type C, proving that the closure ordering is the same, and conjecturing that the intersection cohomology is the same but with degrees doubled.

Pieces of nilpotent cones for classical groups

We compare orbits in the nilpotent cone of type $B_n$, that of type $C_n$, and Kato's exotic nilpotent cone. We prove that the number of $\F_q$-points in each nilpotent orbit of type $B_n$ or $C_n$ equals that in a corresponding union of orbits, called a type-$B$ or type-$C$ piece, in the exotic nilpotent cone. This is a finer version of Lusztig's result that corresponding special pieces in types $B_n$ and $C_n$ have the same number of $\F_q$-points. The proof requires studying the case of characteristic 2, where more direct connections between the three nilpotent cones can be established. We also prove that the type-$B$ and type-$C$ pieces of the exotic nilpotent cone are smooth in any characteristic.

Rational cohomology of the real Coxeter toric variety of type A

The toric variety corresponding to the Coxeter fan of type A can also be described as a De Concini-Procesi wonderful model. Using a general result of Rains which relates cohomology of real De Concini-Procesi models to poset homology, we give formulas for the Betti numbers of the real toric variety, and the symmetric group representations on the rational cohomologies. We also show that the rational cohomology ring is not generated in degree 1.
