Asymptotic trace formula for the Hecke operators

Given integers $m$, $n$ and $k$, we give an explicit formula with an optimal error term (with square root cancelation) for the Petersson trace formula involving the $m$-th and $n$-th Fourier coefficients of an orthonormal basis of $S_k(N)^*$ (the weight $k$ newforms with fixed square-free level $N$) provided that $|4 π\sqrt{mn}- k|=o(k^{\frac{1}{3}})$. Moreover, we establish an explicit formula with a power saving error term for the trace of the Hecke operator $\mathcal{T}_n^*$ on $S_k(N)^*$ averaged over $k$ in a short interval. By bounding the second moment of the trace of $\mathcal{T}_{n}$ over a larger interval, we show that the trace of $\mathcal{T}_n$ is unusually large in the range $|4 π\sqrt{n}- k| = o(n^{\frac{1}{6}})$. As an application, for any fixed prime $p$ with $\gcd(p,N)=1$, we show that there exists a sequence $\{k_n\}$ of weights such that the error term of Weyl's law for $\mathcal{T}_p$ is unusually large and violates the prediction of arithmetic quantum chaos. In particular, this generalizes the result of Gamburd, Jakobson and Sarnak~\cite[Theorem 1.4]{Gamburd} with an improved exponent.

Lower bounds for Maass forms on semisimple groups

Let $G$ be an anisotropic semisimple group over a totally real number field $F$. Suppose that $G$ is compact at all but one infinite place $v_0$. In addition, suppose that $G_{v_0}$ is $\mathbb{R}$-almost simple, not split, and has a Cartan involution defined over $F$. If $Y$ is a congruence arithmetic manifold of non-positive curvature associated to $G$, we prove that there exists a sequence of Laplace eigenfunctions on $Y$ whose sup norms grow like a power of the eigenvalue.

$L^p$ norms of higher rank eigenfunctions and bounds for spherical functions

We prove almost sharp upper bounds for the $L^p$ norms of eigenfunctions of the full ring of invariant differential operators on a compact locally symmetric space, as well as their restrictions to maximal flat subspaces. Our proof combines techniques from semiclassical analysis with harmonic theory on reductive groups, and makes use of new asymptotic bounds for spherical functions that are of independent interest.

Endoscopy and cohomology of a quasi-split U(4)

We prove asymptotic upper bounds for the $L^2$ Betti numbers of the locally symmetric spaces associated to a quasi-split $U(4)$. These manifolds are 8-dimensional, and we prove bounds in degrees 2 and 3, with the behaviour in the other degrees being well understood. In degree 3, we conjecture that these bounds are sharp. Our main tool is the endoscopic classification of automorphic representations of U(N) by Mok.

On the number of harmonic frames

There is a finite number $h_{n,d}$ of tight frames of $n$ distinct vectors for $\mathbb{C}^d$ which are the orbit of a vector under a unitary action of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_n$. These cyclic harmonic frames (or geometrically uniform tight frames) are used in signal analysis and quantum information theory, and provide many tight frames of particular interest. Here we investigate the conjecture that $h_{n,d}$ grows like $n^{d-1}$. By using a result of Laurent which describes the set of solutions of algebraic equations in roots of unity, we prove the asymptotic estimate $$ h_{n,d} \approx {n^d \over φ(n)}\ge n^{d-1}, \qquad n\to\infty. $$ By using a group theoretic approach, we also give some exact formulas for $h_{n,d}$, and estimate the number of cyclic harmonic frames up to projective unitary equivalence.

Local bounds for $L^p$ norms of Maass forms in the level aspect

We apply techniques from harmonic analysis to study the $L^p$ norms of Maass forms of varying level on a quaternion division algebra. Our first result gives a candidate for the local bound for the sup norm in terms of the level, which is new when the level is not squarefree. The second result is a bound for $L^p$ norms in the level aspect that is analogous to Sogge's theorem on $L^p$ norms of Laplace eigenfunctions.

Theta lifting and cohomology growth in p-adic towers

We use the theta lift to study the multiplicity with which certain automorphic representations of cohomological type occur in a family of congruence covers of an arithmetic manifold. When the family of covers is a so-called `p-adic congruence tower' we obtain sharp asymptotics for the number of representations which occur as lifts. When combined with theorems on the surjectivity of the theta lift due to Howe and Li, and Bergeron, Millson and Moeglin, this allows us to verify certain cases of a conjecture of Sarnak and Xue.

Unconditional bounds for the multiplicity of automorphic forms of cohomological type on GL_2

We prove an unconditional power saving for the dimension of the space of cohomological automorphic forms of fixed level and growing weight on GL_2 over any number field which is not totally real. Our proof involves the theory of p-adically completed cohomology developed by Calegari and Emerton, and a bound for the growth of coinvariants in certain finitely generated non-commutative Iwasawa modules.

Zero repulsion in families of elliptic curve L-functions and an observation of S. J. Miller

We provide a theoretical explanation for an observation of S. J. Miller that if L(s,E) is an elliptic curve L-function for which L(1/2, E) is nonzero, then the lowest lying zero of L(s,E) exhibits a repulsion from the critical point which is not explained by the standard Katz-Sarnak heuristics. We establish a similar result in the case of first-order vanishing.

Bounds for multiplicities of automorphic forms of cohomological type on GL_2

We prove various results on the cohomology of arithmetic lattices arising from quaternion algebras over a number field with at least one complex place, including a strong restriction on the allowable weights of cuspidal cohomological automorphic forms and a conditional power saving for their multiplicities when the associated locally symmetric space is a hyperbolic 3-manifold.

Mass Equidistribution for Automorphic Forms of Cohomological Type on GL_2

We extend Holowinsky and Soundararajan's proof of quantum unique ergodicity for holomorphic Hecke modular forms on SL(2,Z), by establishing it for automorphic forms of cohomological type on GL_2 over an arbitrary number field which satisfy the Ramanujan bounds. In particular, we have uncondtional theorems over totally real and imaginary quadratic fields. In the totally real case we show that our result implies the equidistribution of the zero divisors of holomorphic Hecke modular forms, generalising a result of Rudnick over Q.

Triple Product L Functions and Quantum Chaos on SL(2,C)

We extend the results of Watson, which link quantum unique ergodicity on arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces with subconvexity for the triple product L function, to the case of arithmetic hyperbolic three manifolds. We work with the full unitary dual of SL(2,C), and consider QUE for automorphic forms of arbitrary fixed weight and growing spectral parameter. We obtain our results by constructing microlocal lifts of nonspherical automorphic forms using representation theory, and quantifying the generalised triple product formula of Ichino in the case of complex places.
