Uniform bounds for Neumann heat kernels and their traces in convex sets

We prove a bound on the heat trace of the Neumann Laplacian on a convex domain that captures the first two terms in its small-time expansion, but is valid for all times and depends on the underlying domain only through very simple geometric characteristics. This is proved via a precise and uniform expansion of the on-diagonal heat kernel close to the boundary. Most of our results are valid without the convexity assumption and we also consider two-term asymptotics for the heat trace for Lipschitz domains.

An inequality for the normal derivative of the Lane-Emden ground state

We consider Lane-Emden ground states with polytropic index 0≤q−1≤10\leq q-1\leq 1, that is, minimizers of the Dirichlet integral among LqL^q-normalized functions. Our main result is a sharp lower bound on the L2L^2-norm of the normal derivative in terms of the energy, which implies a corresponding isoperimetric inequality. Our bound holds for arbitrary bounded open Lipschitz sets Ω⊂RdΩ\subset\mathbb{R}^d, without assuming convexity.

Asymptotic shape optimization for Riesz means of the Dirichlet Laplacian over convex domains

For Ω⊂RnΩ\subset \mathbb{R}^n, a convex and bounded domain, we study the spectrum of −ΔΩ-Δ_Ω the Dirichlet Laplacian on ΩΩ. For Λ≥0Λ\geq0 and γ≥0γ\geq 0 let ΩΛ,γ(A)Ω_{Λ, γ}(\mathcal{A}) denote any extremal set of the shape optimization problem sup⁡{Tr(−ΔΩ−Λ)−γ:Ω∈A,∣Ω∣=1}, \sup\{ \mathrm{Tr}(-Δ_Ω-Λ)_-^γ: Ω\in \mathcal{A}, |Ω|=1\}, where A\mathcal{A} is an admissible family of convex domains in Rn\mathbb{R}^n. If γ≥1γ\geq 1 and {Λj}j≥1\{Λ_j\}_{j\geq1} is a positive sequence tending to infinity we prove that {ΩΛj,γ(A)}j≥1\{Ω_{Λ_j, γ}(\mathcal{A})\}_{j\geq1} is a bounded sequence, and hence contains a convergent subsequence. Under an additional assumption on A\mathcal{A} we characterize the possible limits of such subsequences as minimizers of the perimeter among domains in A\mathcal{A} of unit measure. For instance if A\mathcal{A} is the set of all convex polygons with no more than mm faces, then ΩΛ,γΩ_{Λ, γ} converges, up to rotation and translation, to the regular mm-gon. This is a revised version of the paper published in the Journal of Spectral Theory (2019) which has been updated in accordance with an erratum published in 2021. The results of the paper remain unchanged, but the proofs of Theorem 2.4 and Corollary 5.3 have been amended.

On the spectrum of the Kronig-Penney model in a constant electric field

We are interested in the nature of the spectrum of the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator −d2dx2−Fx+∑n∈Zgnδ(x−n)in L2(R) - \frac{d^2}{dx^2}-Fx + \sum_{n \in \mathbb{Z}}g_n δ(x-n) \qquad\text{in } L^2(\mathbb{R}) with F>0F>0 and two different choices of the coupling constants {gn}n∈Z\{g_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{Z}}. In the first model gn≡λg_n \equiv λ and we prove that if F∈π2QF\in π^2 \mathbb{Q} then the spectrum is R\mathbb{R} and is furthermore absolutely continuous away from an explicit discrete set of points. In the second model the gng_n are independent random variables with mean zero and variance λ2λ^2. Under certain assumptions on the distribution of these random variables we prove that almost surely the spectrum is R\mathbb{R} and it is dense pure point if F<λ2/2F < λ^2/2 and purely singular continuous if F>λ2/2F> λ^2/2.

A bound for the perimeter of inner parallel bodies

We provide a sharp lower bound for the perimeter of the inner parallel sets of a convex body ΩΩ. The bound depends only on the perimeter and inradius rr of the original body and states that ∣∂Ωt∣≥(1−tr)+n−1∣∂Ω∣.|\partialΩ_t| \geq \Bigl(1-\frac{t}{r}\Bigr)^{n-1}_+ |\partial Ω|. In particular the bound is independent of any regularity properties of ∂Ω\partialΩ. As a by-product of the proof we establish precise conditions for equality. The proof, which is straightforward, is based on the construction of an extremal set for a certain optimization problem and the use of basic properties of mixed volumes. This is a revised version of the paper published in J. Funct. Anal. (2016) where an error is addressed in accordance with a corrigendum to appear in J. Funct. Anal. The main result of the paper remains the same but an error in Lemma 2.1 has been corrected and the subsequent proofs have been adapted accordingly.

A sharp multidimensional Hermite-Hadamard inequality

Let Ω⊂RdΩ\subset \mathbb{R}^d, d≥2d \geq 2, be a bounded convex domain and f ⁣:Ω→Rf\colon Ω\to \mathbb{R} be a non-negative subharmonic function. In this paper we prove the inequality 1∣Ω∣∫Ωf(x) dx≤d∣∂Ω∣∫∂Ωf(x) dσ(x) . \frac{1}{|Ω|}\int_Ωf(x)\,dx \leq \frac{d}{|\partialΩ|}\int_{\partialΩ} f(x)\,dσ(x)\,. Equivalently, the result can be stated as a bound for the gradient of the Saint Venant torsion function. Specifically, if Ω⊂RdΩ\subset \mathbb{R}^d is a bounded convex domain and uu is the solution of −Δu=1-Δu =1 with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, then ∥∇u∥L∞(Ω)<d∣Ω∣∣∂Ω∣ . \|\nabla u\|_{L^\infty(Ω)} < d\frac{|Ω|}{|\partialΩ|}\,. Moreover, both inequalities are sharp in the sense that if the constant dd is replaced by something smaller there exist convex domains for which the inequalities fail. This improves upon the recent result that the optimal constant is bounded from above by d3/2d^{3/2} due to Beck et al.

Geometric Hardy inequalities for the sub-elliptic Laplacian on convex domains in the Heisenberg group

We prove geometric LpL^p versions of Hardy's inequality for the sub-elliptic Laplacian on convex domains ΩΩ in the Heisenberg group Hn\mathbb{H}^n, where convex is meant in the Euclidean sense. When p=2p=2 and ΩΩ is the half-space given by ⟨ξ,ν⟩>d\langle ξ, ν\rangle > d this generalizes an inequality previously obtained by Luan and Yang. For such pp and ΩΩ the inequality is sharp and takes the form \begin{equation} \int_Ω|\nabla_{\mathbb{H}^n}u|^2 \, dξ\geq \frac{1}{4}\int_Ω \sum_{i=1}^n\frac{\langle X_i(ξ), ν\rangle^2+\langle Y_i(ξ), ν\rangle^2}{\textrm{dist}(ξ, \partial Ω)^2}|u|^2\, dξ, \end{equation} where dist( ⋅ ,∂Ω)\textrm{dist}(\, \cdot\,, \partial Ω) denotes the Euclidean distance from ∂Ω\partial Ω.
