Time Evolution of Multi-Party Entanglement Signals

We study the real-time dynamics of multi-party entanglement signals in chaotic quantum many-body systems including but not necessarily restricted to holographic conformal field theories. We find that scrambling dynamics generates multiparty entanglement with rich structure including: (a) qualitatively different dynamical behaviours for different signals, likely reflecting different dynamics for different kinds of entanglement patterns, (b) discontinuities indicating dynamical phase transitions in the entanglement structure, (c) transient and non-monotonic multiparty entanglement, and (d) periods during which the extensive entanglement of some regions is entirely multipartite. Our main technical tool is the membrane theory of entanglement dynamics.

Constraints on cosmologies inside black holes

We study the construction of holographic models with closed FRW cosmologies on the worldvolume of a constant-tension brane inside a Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. In dimensions d>2, having a smooth Euclidean solution where the brane does not self-intersect limits the brane tension to T<T_*, preventing us from realising a separation of scales between the brane and bulk curvature scales. We show that adding interface branes to this model does not relax the condition on the brane tension.

Going beyond ER=EPR in the SYK model

We discuss generalizations of the TFD to a density matrix on the doubled Hilbert space. We suggest that a semiclassical wormhole corresponds to a certain class of such density matrices, and specify how they are constructed. Different semi-classical profiles correspond to different non-overlapping density matrices. We show that this language allows for a finer criteria for when the wormhole is semiclassical, which goes beyond entanglement. Our main tool is the SYK model. We focus on the simplest class of such density matrices, in a scaling limit where the ER bridge is captured by chords going from one space to another, encoding correlations in the microscopic Hamiltonian. The length of the wormhole simply encodes the extent these correlations are eroded when flowing from one side to the other.

Towards traversable wormholes from force-free plasmas

The near-horizon region of magnetically charged black holes can have very strong magnetic fields. A useful low-energy effective theory for fluctuations of the fields, coupled to electrically charged particles, is force-free electrodynamics. The low energy collective excitations include a large number of Alfven wave modes, which have a massless dispersion relation along the field worldlines. We attempt to construct traversable wormhole solutions using the negative Casimir energy of the Alfven wave modes, analogously to the recent construction using charged massless fermions. The behaviour of massless scalars in the near-horizon region implies that the size of the wormholes is strongly restricted and cannot be made large, even though the force free description is valid in a larger regime.

Butterflies with rotation and charge

We explore the butterfly effect for black holes with rotation or charge. We perturb rotating BTZ and charged black holes in 2+1 dimensions by adding a small perturbation on one asymptotic region, described by a shock wave in the spacetime, and explore the effect of this shock wave on the length of geodesics through the wormhole and hence on correlation functions. We find the effect of the perturbation grows exponentially at a rate controlled by the temperature; dependence on the angular momentum or charge does not appear explicitly. We comment on issues affecting the extension to higher-dimensional charged black holes.

Holography on Non-Orientable Surfaces

We consider the holographic computation of two dimensional conformal field theory partition functions on non-orientable surfaces. We classify the three dimensional geometries that give bulk saddle point contributions to the partition function, and find that there are fewer saddles than in the orientable case. For example, for the Klein bottle there is a single smooth saddle and a single additional saddle with an orbifold singularity. We argue that one must generally include singular bulk saddle points in order to reproduce the CFT results. We also discuss loop corrections to these partition functions for the Klein bottle.

Connection vs metric description for non-AdS solutions in higher spin theories

We consider recently-constructed solutions of three dimensional SL(N,R) x SL(N,R) Chern-Simons theories with non-relativistic symmetries. Solutions of the Chern-Simons theories can generically be mapped to solutions of a gravitational theory with a higher-spin gauge symmetry. However, we will show that some of the non-relativistic solutions are not equivalent to metric solutions, as this mapping fails to be invertible. We also show that these Chern-Simons solutions always have a global SL(N,R) x SL(N,R) symmetry. We argue that these results pose a challenge to constructing a duality relating these solutions to field theories with non-relativistic symmetries.

Hot multiboundary wormholes from bipartite entanglement

We analyze the 1+1 CFT states dual to hot (time-symmetric) 2+1 multiboundary AdS wormholes. These are black hole geometries with high local temperature, $n \ge 1$ asymptotically-AdS$_3$ regions, and arbitrary internal topology. The dual state at $t=0$ is defined on $n$ circles. We show these to be well-described by sewing together tensor networks corresponding to thermofield double states. As a result, the entanglement is spatially localized and bipartite: away from particular boundary points ("vertices") any small connected region $A$ of the boundary CFT is entangled only with another small connected region $B$, where $B$ may lie on a different circle or may be a different part of the same circle. We focus on the pair-of-pants case, from which more general cases may be constructed. We also discuss finite-temperature corrections, where we note that the states involve a code subspace in each circle.

Schrödinger Holography with $z=2$

We investigate holography for asymptotically Schrödinger spacetimes, using a frame formalism based on the anisotropic scaling symmetry. We build on our previous work on $z<2$ to propose a dictionary for $z=2$. For $z=2$, the scaling symmetry does not act on the additional null direction, which implies that in our dictionary it does not correspond to one of the field theory directions. This is significantly different from previous analyses based on viewing Schrödinger as a deformation of AdS. We study this dictionary in the linearised theory and in an asymptotic expansion. We show that a solution exists in an asymptotic expansion for arbitrary sources for the relevant operators in the stress energy complex.

Behind the geon horizon

We explore the Papadodimas-Raju prescription for reconstructing the region behind the horizon of one-sided black holes in AdS/CFT in the case of the RP^2 geon - a simple, analytic example of a single-sided, asymptotically AdS_3 black hole, which corresponds to a pure CFT state that thermalises at late times. We show that in this specific example, the mirror operators involved in the reconstruction of the interior have a particularly simple form: the mirror of a single trace operator at late times is just the corresponding single trace operator at early times. We use some explicit examples to explore how changes in the state modify the geometry inside the horizon.

Black Holes, Entanglement and Random Matrices

We provide evidence that strong quantum entanglement between Hilbert spaces does not generically create semiclassical wormholes between the corresponding geometric regions in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We propose a description of low-energy gravity probes as random operators on the space of black hole states. We use this description to compute correlators between the entangled systems, and argue that a wormhole can only exist if correlations are large. Conversely, we also argue that large correlations can exist in the manifest absence of a Lorentzian wormhole. Thus the strength of the entanglement cannot generically diagnose spacetime connectedness, without information on the spectral properties of the probing operators. Our random matrix picture of probes also provides suggestive insights into the problem of "seeing behind a horizon".

Holography for asymptotically locally Lifshitz spacetimes

We give a definition of asymptotically locally Lifshitz spacetimes, with boundary data appropriate for a non-relativistic theory on the boundary. Solutions satisfying these boundary conditions are constructed in an asymptotic expansion. We identify the boundary data with sources for dual field theory operators, and give a prescription for calculating the one-point functions of the field theory operators (including the stress tensor) in the presence of arbitrary sources. The divergences in these one-point functions can be cancelled by holographic renormalization, adding counterterms which are local functions of the boundary data.

Multiboundary Wormholes and Holographic Entanglement

The AdS/CFT correspondence relates quantum entanglement between boundary Conformal Field Theories and geometric connections in the dual asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space-time. We consider entangled states in the n-fold tensor product of a 1+1 dimensional CFT Hilbert space defined by the Euclidean path integral over a Riemann surface with n holes. In one region of moduli space, the dual bulk state is a black hole with n asymptotically AdS_3 regions connected by a common wormhole, while in other regions the bulk fragments into disconnected components. We study the entanglement structure and compute the wave function explicitly in the puncture limit of the Riemann surface in terms of CFT n-point functions. We also use AdS minimal surfaces to measure entanglement more generally. In some regions of the moduli space the entanglement is entirely multipartite, though not of the GHZ type. However, even when the bulk is completely connected, in some regions of the moduli space the entanglement is almost entirely bipartite: significant entanglement occurs only between pairs of CFTs. We develop new tools to analyze intrinsically n-partite entanglement, and use these to show that for some wormholes with n similar sized horizons there is intrinsic entanglement between at least n-1 parties, and that the distillable entanglement between the asymptotic regions is at least (n+1)/2 partite.

On the Oscillation of Species

We describe a new class of BPS objects called magnetubes: their supersymmetry is determined by their magnetic charges, while their electric charges can oscillate freely between different species. We show how to incorporate these objects into microstate geometries and create BPS solutions in which the charge densities rotate through different U(1) species as one moves around a circle within the microstate geometry. Our solutions have the same "time-like" supersymmetry as five-dimensional, three-charge black holes but, in various parts of the solution, the supersymmetry takes the "null" form that is normally associated with magnetic charges. It is this property that enables the species oscillation of magnetubes to be compatible with supersymmetry. We give an example in which the species oscillate non-trivially around a circle within a microstate geometry, and yet the energy-momentum tensor and metric are completely independent of this circle: only the amplitude of the oscillation influences the metric.

Scattering amplitudes in Lifshitz spacetime

We consider the calculation of scattering amplitudes in field theories dual to Lifshitz spacetimes. These amplitudes provide an interesting probe of the IR structure of the field theory; our aim is to use them to explore the observable consequences of the singularity in the spacetime. We assume the amplitudes can be related by T-duality to a Wilson loop, as in the AdS case, and determine the bulk minimal surfaces for the simplest cusp Wilson loop. We use this to determine the leading IR singularity in the amplitude. We find there is a stronger IR singularity for z >1 than for z=1, with a coefficient which vanishes as z goes to 1.

Schrodinger Holography for z<2

We investigate holography for asymptotically Schrodinger spacetimes, using a frame formalism. Our dictionary is based on the anisotropic scaling symmetry. We consider z <2, where the holographic dictionary is cleaner; we make some comments on z=2. We propose a definition of asymptotically locally Schrodinger spacetime where the leading components of the frame fields provide suitable geometric boundary data. We show that an asymptotic expansion exists for generic boundary data satisfying our boundary conditions for z<2.

A strongly coupled zig-zag transition

The zig-zag symmetry transition is a phase transition in 1D quantum wires, in which a Wigner lattice of electrons transitions to two staggered lattices. Previous studies model this transition as a Luttinger liquid coupled to a Majorana fermion. The model exhibits interesting RG flows, involving quenching of velocities in subsectors of the theory. We suggest an extension of the model which replaces the Majorana fermion by a more general CFT; this includes an experimentally realizable case with two Majorana fermions. We analyse the RG flow both in field theory and using AdS/CFT techniques in the large central charge limit of the CFT. The model has a rich phase structure with new qualitative features, already in the two Majorana fermion case. The AdS/CFT calculation involves considering back reaction in space-time to capture subleading effects.

Boundary conditions for metric fluctuations in Lifshitz

We consider the quantisation of linearised fluctuations of the metric and matter fields about a Lifshitz background, exploring the possibility of alternative boundary conditions, allowing the slow fall-off modes to fluctuate. We find that for $z >2$, slow fall-off modes for some of the linearised fluctuations are normalizable, which opens up the possibility of considering alternative boundary conditions. Analysing stability, we find that alternative boundary conditions for the momentum density are allowed, but alternative boundary conditions for the energy density lead to an instability of the type we recently discovered in a similar analysis for scalar fields on a fixed Lifshitz background. Our investigation is in the context of the simple massive vector model, but we would expect the conclusions to be more general.

Entanglement and Correlations near Extremality: CFTs dual to Reissner-Nordström AdS${}_5$

We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study models of entanglement and correlations between two $d=4$ CFTs in thermofield double states at finite chemical potential. Our bulk spacetimes are planar Reissner-Nordström AdS black holes. We compute both thermo-mutual information and the two-point correlators of large-dimension scalar operators, focussing on the small-temperature behavior -- an infrared limit with behavior similar to that seen at large times. The interesting feature of this model is of course that the entropy density remains finite as $T \rightarrow 0$ while the bulk geometry develops an infinite throat. This leads to a logarithmic divergence in the scale required for non-zero mutual information between equal-sized strips in the two CFTs, though the mutual information between one entire CFT and a finite-sized strip in the other can remain non-zero even at $T=0$. Furthermore, despite the infinite throat, there can be extremally charged operators for which the two-point correlations remain finite as $T \rightarrow 0$. This suggests an interestingly mixed picture in which some aspects of the entanglement remain localized on scales set by the chemical potential, while others shift to larger and larger scales. We also comment on implications for the localized-quasiparticle picture of entanglement.

Extending the nonsingular hyperscaling violating spacetimes

Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating geometries, which provide a holographic description of non-relativistic field theories, generically have a singularity in the infrared region of the geometry, where tidal forces for freely falling observers diverge, but there is a special class of hyperscaling violating geometries where this tidal force divergence does not occur. We explicitly construct a smooth extension of the spacetime in this case, and explore the structure of the spacetime. We find that the spacetime has two disconnected boundaries, as in AdS$_2$. We also consider the behaviour of finite-energy excitations of the spacetime at the horizon, arguing that they will have some divergence there.

Flows involving Lifshitz solutions

We construct gravity solutions describing renormalization group flows relating relativistic and non-relativistic conformal theories. We work both in a simple phenomenological theory with a massive vector field, and in an N=4, d=6 gauged supergravity theory, which can be consistently embedded in string theory. These flows offer some further insight into holography for Lifshitz geometries: in particular, they enable us to give a description of the field theory dual to the Lifshitz solutions in the latter theory. We also note that some of the AdS and Lifshitz solutions in the N=4, d=6 gauged supergravity theory are dynamically unstable.

States of a chiral 2d CFT

We study the dual description of the self-dual orbifold, a locally AdS_3 spacetime which is a circle fibration over AdS_2 and arises as the near-horizon limit of the extreme BTZ black hole. The geometry has two boundaries; we argue that this should correspond to a saddle-point for two copies of a chiral CFT living on these two boundaries in an entangled state. This picture arises naturally in the near-horizon limit, but there is a potential inconsistency with the bulk physics because of causal connections between the boundaries. We discuss a possible resolution of this puzzle. We also construct geometries which asymptotically approach the self-dual orbifold on a single boundary. These geometries (which contain mild singularities) enable us to explore other states of the dual chiral CFT. One of the geometries corresponds to the ground state of this CFT and can be obtained as a particular near-horizon limit of the BTZ M=0 black hole. The self-dual orbifold is a finite temperature version of this geometry.

Black holes and black strings in plane waves

We investigate the construction of black holes and black strings in vacuum plane wave spacetimes using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. We find solutions of the linearised equations of motion in the asymptotic region for a general source on a plane wave background. We observe that these solutions do not satisfy our previously defined conditions for being asymptotically plane wave. Hence, the space of asymptotically plane wave solutions is restricted. We consider the solution in the near region, treating the plane wave as a perturbation of a black object, and find that there is a regular black string solution but no regular black hole solution.

Dynamical black holes and expanding plasmas

We analyse the global structure of time-dependent geometries dual to expanding plasmas, considering two examples: the boost invariant Bjorken flow, and the conformal soliton flow. While the geometry dual to the Bjorken flow is constructed in a perturbation expansion at late proper time, the conformal soliton flow has an exact dual (which corresponds to a Poincare patch of Schwarzschild-AdS). In particular, we discuss the position and area of event and apparent horizons in the two geometries. The conformal soliton geometry offers a sharp distinction between event and apparent horizon; whereas the area of the event horizon diverges, that of the apparent horizon stays finite and constant. This suggests that the entropy of the corresponding CFT state is related to the apparent horizon rather than the event horizon.

Strings in extremal BTZ black holes

We study the spectrum of the worldsheet theory of the bosonic closed string in the massless and extremal rotating BTZ black holes. We use a hyperbolic Wakimoto representation of the SL(2,R) currents to construct vertex operators for the string modes on these backgrounds. We argue that there are tachyons in the twisted sector, but these are not localised near the horizon. We study the relation to the null orbifold in the limit of vanishing cosmological constant. We also discuss the problem of extending this analysis to the supersymmetric case.

Asymptotically Plane Wave Spacetimes and their Actions

We propose a definition of asymptotically plane wave spacetimes in vacuum gravity in terms of the asymptotic falloff of the metric, and discuss the relation to previously constructed exact solutions. We construct a well-behaved action principle for such spacetimes, using the formalism developed by Mann and Marolf. We show that this action is finite on-shell and that the variational principle is well-defined for solutions of vacuum gravity satisfying our asymptotically plane wave falloff conditions.

Heating up Galilean holography

We embed a holographic description of a quantum field theory with Galilean conformal invariance in string theory. The key observation is that such field theories may be realized as conventional superconformal field theories with a known string theory embedding, twisted by the R-symmetry in a light-like direction. Using the Null Melvin Twist, we construct the appropriate dual geometry and its non-extremal generalization. From the nonzero temperature solution we determine the equation of state. We also discuss the hydrodynamic regime of these non-relativistic plasmas and show that the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio takes the universal value one over four pi typical of strongly interacting field theories with gravity duals.

Causal structures and holography

We explore the description of bulk causal structure in a dual field theory. We observe that in the spacetime dual to a spacelike non-commutative field theory, the causal structure in the boundary directions is modified asymptotically. We propose that this modification is described in the dual theory by a modification of the micro-causal light cone. Previous studies of this micro-causal light cone for spacelike non-commutativite field theories agree with the expectations from the bulk spacetime. We describe the spacetime dual to field theories with lightlike non-commutativity, and show that they generically have a drastic modification of the light cone in the bulk: the spacetime is non-distinguishing. This means that the spacetime while being devoid of closed timelike or null curves, has causal curves that are ``almost closed''. We go on to show that the micro-causal light cone in the field theory agrees with this prediction from the bulk.

Causal inheritance in plane wave quotients

We investigate the appearance of closed timelike curves in quotients of plane waves along spacelike isometries. First we formulate a necessary and sufficient condition for a quotient of a general spacetime to preserve stable causality. We explicitly show that the plane waves are stably causal; in passing, we observe that some pp-waves are not even distinguishing. We then consider the classification of all quotients of the maximally supersymmetric ten-dimensional plane wave under a spacelike isometry, and show that the quotient will lead to closed timelike curves iff the isometry involves a translation along the u direction. The appearance of these closed timelike curves is thus connected to the special properties of the light cones in plane wave spacetimes. We show that all other quotients preserve stable causality.

preprint2003arXiv

Plane waves and spacelike infinity

In an earlier paper, we showed that the causal boundary of any homogeneous plane wave satisfying the null convergence condition consists of a single null curve. In Einstein-Hilbert gravity, this would include any homogeneous plane wave satisfying the weak null energy condition. For conformally flat plane waves such as the Penrose limit of $AdS_5 \times S^5$, all spacelike curves that reach infinity also end on this boundary and the completion is Hausdorff. However, the more generic case (including, e.g., the Penrose limits of $AdS_4 \times S^7$ and $AdS_7 \times S^4$) is more complicated. In one natural topology, not all spacelike curves have limit points in the causal completion, indicating the need to introduce additional points at `spacelike infinity'--the endpoints of spacelike curves. We classify the distinct ways in which spacelike curves can approach infinity, finding a {\it two}-dimensional set of distinct limits. The dimensionality of the set of points at spacelike infinity is not, however, fixed from this argument. In an alternative topology, the causal completion is already compact, but the completion is non-Hausdorff.

Plane Waves: To infinity and beyond!

We describe the asymptotic boundary of the general homogeneous plane wave spacetime, using a construction of the `points at infinity' from the causal structure of the spacetime as introduced by Geroch, Kronheimer and Penrose. We show that this construction agrees with the conformal boundary obtained by Berenstein and Nastase for the maximally supersymmetric ten-dimensional plane wave. We see in detail how the possibility to go beyond (or around) infinity arises from the structure of light cones. We also discuss the extension of the construction to time-dependent plane wave solutions, focusing on the examples obtained from the Penrose limit of Dp-branes.

Supersymmetric Conical Defects: Towards a string theoretic description of black hole formation

Conical defects, or point particles, in AdS_3 are one of the simplest non-trivial gravitating systems, and are particularly interesting because black holes can form from their collision. We embed the BPS conical defects of three dimensions into the N=4b supergravity in six dimensions, which arises from IIB string theory compactified on K3. The required Kaluza-Klein reduction of the six dimensional theory on a sphere is analyzed in detail, including the relation to the Chern-Simons supergravities in three dimensions. We show that the six dimensional spaces obtained by embedding the 3d conical defects arise in the near-horizon limit of rotating black strings. Various properties of these solutions are analyzed and we propose a representation of our defects in the CFT dual to asymptotically AdS_3 x S^3 spaces. Our work is intended as a first step towards analyzing colliding defects that form black holes.

Microcanonical Phases of String Theory on AdS_m x S^n

Banks, Douglas, Horowitz and Martinec [hep-th/9808016] recently argued that in the microcanonical ensemble for string theory on AdS_m xS^n, there is a phase transition between a black hole solution extended over the S^n and a solution localized on the S^n. If we think of this AdS_m x S^n geometry as arising from the near-horizon limit of a black m-2 brane, the existence of this phase transition is puzzling. We present a resolution of this puzzle, and discuss its significance from the point of view of the dual m-1 dimensional field theory. We also discuss multi-black hole solutions in AdS.

Singularities in wavy strings

Extremal six-dimensional black string solutions with some non-trivial momentum distribution along the wave are considered. These solutions were recently shown to contain a singularity at the would-be position of the event horizon. In the black string geometry, all curvature invariants are finite at the horizon. It is shown that if the effects of infalling matter are included, there are curvature invariants which diverge there. This implies that quantum corrections will be important at the would-be horizon. The effect of this singularity on test strings is also considered, and it is shown that it leads to a divergent excitation of the string. The quantum corrections will therefore be important for test objects.
