This article is a review of parts of Atiyah's work, mainly from the periods 1952-1958 and 1976-1990.
The first part of this article is a short and selective survey of developments in differential and algebraic geometry from the 1980's involving enumerative questions and nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. In the second part we discuss possible extensions of these ideas to structures on 4-manifolds, in particular to complex structures on surfaces of general type
This is an expository article on the 1978 Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin construction of Yang-Mills instanton connections over the 4-sphere.
We discuss a model for associative submanifolds in $G_{2}$-manifolds with K3 fibrations, in the adiabatic limit. The model involves graphs in a 3-manifold whose edges are locally gradient flow lines. We show that this model produces analogues of known singularity formation phenomena for associative submanifolds.
We study co-associative fibrations of G_{2}-manifolds. We propose that the adiabatic limit of this structure should be given locally by a maximal submanifold in a space of indefinite signature and set up global versions of the constructions.
This is an expository article, closely following the author's lecture at the 2014 Journal Differential Geometry conference.
We give a new proof of the fact that the condition of a Fano manifold admitting a Kähler-Einstein metric is Zariski-open (provided that the automorphism group is discrete). This proof does not use the characterisation involving stability. The arguments involve estimates of Futaki invariants obtained from a differential-geometric "volume estimate", and variants of the algebro-geometric arguments of Stoppa. Many of the ideas apply to constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics.
In this paper we continue to study Gromov-Hausdorff limits of Kahler manifolds and algebraic geometry. Our main focus is on the algebro-geometric meaning of Riemannian tangent cones and rescaled limits.
We explain how the formal aspects of the theory of Kahler-Einstein metrics can be developed in the framework of moment maps. The central result we use is the Berndtsson convexity theorem, which is interpreted as defining a metric on the space of complex structures. We discuss some applications of these ideas to the Kahler-Ricci flow.
This is the third and final paper in a series which establish results announced in arXiv:1210.7494. In this paper we consider the Gromov-Hausdorff limits of metrics with cone singularities in the case when the limiting cone angle approaches 2π. We also put all our technical results together to complete the proof of the main theorem that if a K-stable Fano manifold admits a Kahler-Einstein metric.
We prove a general result about the geometry of holomorphic line bundles over Kahler manifolds.
We annnounce a proof of the fact that a K-stable Fano manifold admits a Kahler-Einstein metric and give a brief outline of the proof.
This is the first of a series of three papers which provide proofs of results announced recently in arXiv:1210.7494.
This is the second of a series of three papers which provide proofs of results announced in arXiv:1210.7494. In this paper we consider the Gromov-Hausdorff limits of metrics with cone singularities in the case when the limiting cone angle is less than 2π. We show that these are in a natrual way projective algebraic varieties. In the case when the limiting variety and the limiting divisor are smooth we show that the limiting metric also has standard cone singularities.
We develop a new approach to, and small extension of, results of Cheeger, Colding and Tian concerning the $L^{k/2}$ norm of the curvature of a Riemannian manifold Gromov-Hausdorff close to a codimension $k$ singularity.
This is an expository paper which aims to give a simple proof of the existence of Ricci-flat metrics on certain K3 surfaces, as an illustration of general "glueing" techniques.
We define a new notion of "b-stability" for a polarised algebraic variety, adapted to the existence problem for Kahler-Einstein metrics on Fano manifolds.
