Random search in fluid flow aided by chemotaxis

In this paper, we consider the dynamics of a 2D target-searching agent performing Brownian motion under the influence of fluid shear flow and chemical attraction. The analysis is motivated by numerous situations in biology where these effects are present, such as broadcast spawning of marine animals and other reproduction processes or workings of the immune systems. We rigorously characterize the limit of the expected hit time in the large flow amplitude limit as corresponding to the effective one-dimensional problem. We also perform numerical computations to characterize the finer properties of the expected duration of the search. The numerical experiments show many interesting features of the process, and in particular existence of the optimal value of the shear flow that minimizes the expected target hit time and outperforms the large flow limit.

Are we really making much progress? Revisiting, benchmarking, and refining heterogeneous graph neural networks

Heterogeneous graph neural networks (HGNNs) have been blossoming in recent years, but the unique data processing and evaluation setups used by each work obstruct a full understanding of their advancements. In this work, we present a systematical reproduction of 12 recent HGNNs by using their official codes, datasets, settings, and hyperparameters, revealing surprising findings about the progress of HGNNs. We find that the simple homogeneous GNNs, e.g., GCN and GAT, are largely underestimated due to improper settings. GAT with proper inputs can generally match or outperform all existing HGNNs across various scenarios. To facilitate robust and reproducible HGNN research, we construct the Heterogeneous Graph Benchmark (HGB), consisting of 11 diverse datasets with three tasks. HGB standardizes the process of heterogeneous graph data splits, feature processing, and performance evaluation. Finally, we introduce a simple but very strong baseline Simple-HGN--which significantly outperforms all previous models on HGB--to accelerate the advancement of HGNNs in the future.

On the $8π$-critical mass threshold of a Patlak-Keller-Segel-Navier-Stokes system

In this paper, we proposed a coupled Patlak-Keller-Segel-Navier-Stokes system, which has dissipative free energy. On the plane $\rr^2$, if the total mass of the cells is strictly less than $8π$, classical solutions exist for any finite time, and their $H^s$-Sobolev norms are almost uniformly bounded in time. For the radially symmetric solutions, this $8π$-mass threshold is critical. On the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$, the solutions are uniformly bounded in time under the same mass constraint.

Suppression of blow-up in Patlak-Keller-Segel via shear flows

In this paper we consider the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel models in $\mathbb T^d$ with $d=2,3$ with the additional effect of advection by a large shear flow. Without the shear flow, the model is $L^1$ critical in two dimensions with critical mass $8π$; solutions with mass less than $8π$ are global and solutions with mass larger than $8 π$ with finite second moment, all blow up in finite time. In three dimensions, the model is $L^{3/2}$ critical and $L^1$ supercritical; there exists solutions with arbitrarily small mass which blow up in finite time arbitrarily fast. We show that the additional shear flow, if it is chosen sufficiently large, suppresses one dimension of the dynamics and hence can suppress blow-up. In two dimensions, the problem becomes effectively $L^1$ subcritical and so all solutions are global in time (if the shear flow is chosen large). In three dimensions, the problem is effectively $L^1$ critical, and solutions with mass less than $8π$ are global in time (and for all mass larger than $8π$, there exists solutions which blow up in finite time).

Distance comparison principle and Grayson type theorem in the three dimensional curve shortening flow

In this paper, we use the distance comparison principle, first been developed by G. Huisken, to study the spatial curve shortening flow. We have got the result that if the initial curve is the helix, then the local minimum of the ratio of the extrinsic and intrinsic distance is non-decreasing. And we have proved a Grayson type theorem for a variety of spatial curves.
