Hadronic susceptibilities for b to c transitions from two point correlation functions

We present a lattice determination of the hadronic susceptibilities that, thanks to unitarity and analyticity, constrain the form factors entering the semileptonic $b\rightarrow c$ transitions. We evaluate the transverse and longitudinal susceptibilities of the vector and axial polarization functions at zero momentum transfer from the moments of appropriate two-point correlation functions. The latter are obtained on the lattice employing gauge ensembles of the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f$=2+1+1 flavors of Wilson-clover twisted-mass quarks with masses of all the dynamical quark flavors tuned close to their physical values. The simulations are carried out at four values of the lattice spacing, $a \simeq (0.057,0.068, 0.080, 0.091)$ fm, with spatial lattice sizes up to $L \simeq 7.6$ fm. Heavy-quark masses up to $\approx 3.5$ times the physical charm mass are employed, allowing for a smooth extrapolation to the physical b-quark mass.

Direct lattice calculation of inclusive hadronic decay rates of the $τ$ lepton

The inclusive hadronic decay-rates of the $τ$ lepton are particularly interesting from the phenomenological point of view since they give access to the CKM matrix elements $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$. In this talk, we discuss how a recent method for the extraction of smeared spectral densities from Euclidean lattice correlators can be used to obtain a direct lattice determination of inclusive hadronic $τ$ decay rates. We also present preliminary numerical results obtained by applying this method to correlators measured on two gauge ensembles produced by the ETMC with $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical flavours at physical pion masses, lattice spacing $a\simeq 0.08$ fm and volumes $L\simeq 5.1$ fm and $L\simeq 7.6$ fm.

Insights on the current semi-leptonic $B$-decay discrepancies -- and how $B_s \to μ^+ μ^- γ$ can help

$B_s \to μ^+ μ^- γ$, measured at high $q^2$ as a partially reconstructed decay, can probe the origin of the existing discrepancies in semi-leptonic $b \to s$ and $b \to c$ decays. We perform a complete study of this possibility. We start by reassessing the alleged discrepancies, with a focus on a unified EFT description. Using the SMEFT, we find that the tauonic Wilson coefficient required by $R(D^{(*)})$ implies a universal muonic Wilson coefficient of precisely the size required by semi-muonic BR data and, separately, by semi-muonic angular analyses. We thus identify reference scenarios. Importantly, $B_s \to μ^+ μ^- γ$ offers a strategy to access them without being affected by the long-distance issues that hamper the prediction of semi-leptonic $B$ decays at low $q^2$. After quantifying to the best of our knowledge the $B_s \to μ^+ μ^- γ$ experimental over the long haul, we infer the $B_s \to μ^+ μ^- γ$ sensitivity to the couplings relevant to the anomalies. In the example of the real-$δC_{9,10}$ scenario, we find significances below 3$σ$. Such figure is to be compared with other single-observable sensitivities that one can expect from e.g. BR and angular data, whether at low or high $q^2$, and not affected by long-distance issues such as narrow resonances or intermediate charmed di-meson rescattering.

On the study of inclusive semileptonic decays of $B_s$-meson from lattice QCD

In this contribution we describe a recent study focused on the lattice calculation of inclusive decay rates of heavy mesons. We show how the inclusive calculation can be achieved starting from four-point lattice correlation functions normalised appropriately. The correlators used in this project come from gauge ensembles provided by the JLQCD and ETM collaborations. An essential point of this method is the extraction of spectral densities from lattice correlators which is obtained using two of the most recent approaches in the literature. Our results are in remarkable agreement with analytical predictions from the operator-product expansion. This study represents the first step towards a full lattice QCD study of heavy mesons inclusive semileptonic decays.

A lattice QCD perspective on weak decays of b and c quarks Snowmass 2022 White Paper

Lattice quantum chromodynamics has proven to be an indispensable method to determine nonperturbative strong contributions to weak decay processes. In this white paper for the Snowmass community planning process we highlight achievements and future avenues of research for lattice calculations of weak $b$ and $c$ quark decays, and point out how these calculations will help to address the anomalies currently in the spotlight of the particle physics community. With future increases in computational resources and algorithmic improvements, percent level (and below) lattice determinations will play a central role in constraining the standard model or identifying new physics.

Lattice QCD study of inclusive semileptonic decays of heavy mesons

We present an ab initio study of inclusive semileptonic decays of heavy mesons from lattice QCD. Our approach is based on a recently proposed method, that allows one to address the study of these decays from the analysis of smeared spectral functions extracted from four-point correlators on the lattice, where the smearing is defined in terms of the phase-space integration relevant to the inclusive decays. We present results obtained from gauge-field ensembles from the JLQCD and ETM collaborations, and discuss their relation with theoretical predictions from the operator-product expansion.

LFU ratios in B decays using Lattice QCD and Unitarity

We present the results of the application of the unitarity-based Dispersion Matrix approach to semileptonic charged-current $B$ decays. This method allows to achieve a non-perturbative and completely model-independent determination of the hadronic form factors. Starting from lattice results available at large values of the momentum transfer, the behaviour of the form factors in their whole kinematical range is obtained without introducing any explicit parameterization of their momentum dependence. We will focus on the analysis of Lepton Flavour Universality by computing the $τ/μ$ ratios of the branching fractions of the $B \to D^{(*)} \ell ν$ and $B \to π\ell ν$ decays. The most important result is that, for the first time, the discrepancies between the SM expectation values and the measurements of the Lepton Flavour Universality ratios for the $B \to D^{(*)} \ell ν$ decays are reduced at the 1.3$σ$ level for each of the two channels, separately.

Semileptonic B decays matrix elements

We present some applications of the unitarity-based Dispersion Matrix (DM) approach to the extraction of the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ from the experimental data on the exclusive $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}^{(*)} \ell ν_\ell$ decays. The DM method allows to achieve a non-perturbative, model-independent determination of the momentum dependence of the semileptonic form factors. Starting from lattice results available at large values of the 4-momentum transfer and implementing non-perturbative unitarity bounds, the behaviour of the form factors in their whole kinematical range is obtained without introducing any explicit parameterization of their momentum dependence. We firstly illustrate the effectiveness of the method by considering the case of the semileptonic $B \rightarrow π$ decay, which is a good benchmark since the kinematic range is large. Then, we focus on the four exclusive semileptonic $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}^{(*)} \ell ν_\ell$ decays and we extract $|V_{cb}|$ from the experimental data for each transition. The average over the four channels is $|V_{cb}| = (41.2 \pm 0.8) \cdot 10^{-3} $. We find, for the first time, an exclusive value which is compatible with the latest inclusive determination at $1σ$ level. We address also the issue of Lepton Flavour Universality by computing pure theoretical estimates of the $τ/\ell$ ratios of the branching fractions for each channel. In the case of a light spectator quark we obtain $R(D^*) = 0.275(8)$ and $R(D) = 0.296(8)$, which are compatible with the corresponding experimental values within $1.3σ$. In the case of a strange spectator quark we obtain $\textit{R}(D_s^*) =0.2497(60)$ and $\textit{R}(D_s) = 0.298(5)$.

Form factors for $B\to j_1j_2$ decays into two currents in QCD

We discuss the general properties of the $B$-meson decay form factors $F(q^2,q'^2)$, describing $B$-meson decays induced by two currents, e.g., $B$-decays into four leptons in the final state. We study the analytic properties of these complicated objects and identify those regions of $q^2$ and $q'^2$, where perturbative QCD can be applied for obtaining predictions for the physical form factors.

Nonintegrable threshold singularities of two-point functions in perturbation theory

In perturbation theory, the spectral densities of two-point functions develop non-integrable threshold singularities at higher orders. In QCD, such singularities emerge when calculating the diagrams in terms of the pole quark mass, and they become stronger when one rearranges the perturbative expansion in terms of the running quark mass. In this paper we discuss the proper way to handle such singularities.

The analysis is based on the gauge ensembles produced by ETMC with $N_f=2+1+1$ flavours of Wilson-clover twisted mass quarks, spanning a range of lattice spacings from $\sim0.10$ to $0.07$ fm and include configurations at the physical pion point on lattices with linear size up to $L~\sim~5.6$~fm

Pion structure from twisted mass lattice QCD down to the physical pion mass

We present an investigation of pion structure based on ETMC $N_f=2$ and $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass configurations at maximal twist. We compute the first moment of the quark momentum fraction of the pion, $\langle x \rangle$ and the electromagnetic form factor, $F_π(Q^2)$. For the latter, momentum is injected using twisted boundary conditions and the calculation is carried out directly at the physical pion mass. We find that our data are consistent with vector meson dominance and experimental data in the region of small momentum transfer. For $\langle x \rangle$, we find that our chirally and continuum extrapolated result is compatible with its phenomenological value.

Accelerating Twisted Mass LQCD with QPhiX

We present the implementation of twisted mass fermion operators for the QPhiX library. We analyze the performance on the Intel Xeon Phi (Knights Corner) coprocessor as well as on Intel Xeon Haswell CPUs. In particular, we demonstrate that on the Xeon Phi 7120P the Dslash kernel is able to reach 80\% of the theoretical peak bandwidth, while on a Xeon Haswell E5-2630 CPU our generated code for the Dslash operator with AVX2 instructions outperforms the corresponding implementation in the tmLQCD library by a factor of $\sim 5\times$ in single precision. We strong scale the code up to 6.8 (14.1) Tflops in single (half) precision on 64 Xeon Haswell CPUs.

Accurate decay-constant ratios $f_{B^*}/f_B$ and $f_{B_s^*}/f_{B_s}$ from Borel QCD sum rules

We present our analysis of the decay constants of the beauty vector mesons $B^*$ and $B^*_s$ within the framework of dispersive sum rules for the two-point correlator of vector currents in QCD. While the decay constants of the vector mesons $f_{B^*}$ and $f_{B_s^*}$ $-$ similar to the decay constants of the pseudoscalar mesons $f_B$ and $f_{B_s}$ $-$ individually have large uncertainties induced by theory parameters not known with a satisfactory precision, these uncertainties almost entirely cancel out in the ratios of vector over pseudoscalar decay constants. These ratios may be thus predicted with very high accuracy due to the good control over the systematic uncertainties of the decay constants gained upon application of our hadron-parameter extraction algorithm. Our final results read $f_{B^*}/f_B=0.944\pm0.011_{\rm OPE}\pm0.018_{\rm syst}$ and $f_{B_s^*}/f_{B_s}=0.947\pm0.023_{\rm OPE}\pm0.020_{\rm syst}$. Thus, both $f_{B^*}/f_B$ and $f_{B_s^*}/f_{B_s}$ are less than unity at 2.5$σ$ and 2$σ$ level, respectively.

Precise Ratios of Decay Constants of Vector over Pseudoscalar $B_{(s)}$ Mesons

The relative magnitude of the decay constants of the pseudoscalar and vector beauty mesons poses (in contrast to the case of charmed mesons) a long-standing puzzle. We revisit this problem within the framework of our recent improvements of the QCD sum-rule formalism for relating observable properties of mesons to quantum chromodynamics and are led to conclude that the decay constants of the beauty vector mesons are undoubtedly smaller than those of their pseudoscalar counterparts.

Strong Couplings of Charmed Mesons and Quarkonia

We extract the strong coupling constants of three mesons, each of which is composed of either two charm quarks or one charm quark and one light (i.e., $u$, $d$, or $s$) quark, from the matrix elements for the transitions of two of these mesons induced by appropriate quark currents within the framework of a relativistic dispersion approach to the constituent-quark picture of mesons. Among others, we also analyse the impact of the violation of the SU(3) flavour symmetry by the quark masses. In the case of mesons containing one light quark, we observe, in two respects, discrepancies between our findings and the predictions of QCD sum rules: our strong couplings exceed considerably the ones emerging from QCD sum rules, and, in our approach, the replacement of a light quark by a strange quark entails, in contrast to QCD sum rules, a reduction of the magnitudes of the strong couplings.

Strong three-meson couplings of $J/ψ$ and $η_c$

We discuss the strong couplings $g_{PPV}$ and $g_{VVP}$ for vector ($V$) and pseudoscalar ($P$) mesons, at least one of which is a charmonium state $J/ψ$ or $η_c$. The strong couplings are obtained as residues at the poles of suitable form factors, calculated in a broad range of momentum transfers using a dispersion formulation of the relativistic constituent quark model. The form factors obtained in this approach satisfy all constraints known for these quantities in the heavy-quark limit. Our results suggest sizably higher values for the strong meson couplings than those reported in the literature from QCD sum rules.

Charmed Pseudoscalar and Vector Mesons: a Comprehensive QCD Sum-Rule View of Their Decay Constants

In spite of undeniable similarities of the applied techniques, somewhat different challenges are encountered when extracting, from QCD sum rules derived from two-point correlators of appropriate interpolating heavy-light quark currents, the decay constants of charmed mesons of pseudoscalar nature, on the one hand, or of vector nature, on the other hand. This observation justifies a rather careful reassessment of the corresponding results.

Decay Constants of Beauty Mesons from QCD Sum Rules

Our recently completed analysis of the decay constants of both pseudoscalar and vector beauty mesons reveals that in the bottom-quark sector two specific features of the sum-rule predictions show up: (i) For the input value of the bottom-quark mass in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme $\overline{m}_b(\overline{m}_b)\approx4.18\;\mbox{GeV},$ the sum-rule result $f_B\approx210$-$220\;\mbox{MeV}$ for the $B$ meson decay constant is substantially larger than the recent lattice-QCD finding $f_B\approx190\;\mbox{MeV}.$ Requiring QCD sum rules to reproduce the lattice-QCD value of $f_B$ yields a significantly larger $b$-quark mass: $\overline{m}_b(\overline{m}_b)=4.247\;\mbox{GeV}.$ (ii) Whereas QCD sum-rule predictions for the charmed-meson decay constants $f_D,$ $f_{D_s},$ $f_{D^*}$ and $f_{D_s^*}$ are practically independent of the choice of renormalization scale, in the beauty sector the results for the decay constants - and especially for the ratio $f_{B^*}/f_B$ - prove to be very sensitive to the specific scale setting.

Decay constants of the charmed vector mesons $D^*$ and $D^*_s$ from QCD sum rules

We present a sum-rule calculation of the decay constants of the charmed vector mesons $D^*$ and $D^*_s$ from the two-point correlator of vector currents. First, we show that the perturbative expansion in terms of the pole mass exhibits no sign of convergence whereas the reorganization of this expansion in terms of the $\overline{\rm MS}$ mass leads to a distinct hierarchy. Second, making use of the operator product expansion in terms of the $\overline{\rm MS}$ mass, we determine the decay constants of the $D^*$ and $D^*_s$ mesons with an emphasis on the uncertainties in these theoretically predicted quantities related both to the input QCD parameters and to the limited accuracy of the method of sum rules. Our results are $f_{D^*}=(252.2 \pm 22.3_{\rm OPE}\pm 4_{\rm syst})\; {\rm MeV}$ and $f_{D_s^*}=(305.5 \pm 26.8_{\rm OPE}\pm 5_{\rm syst})\; {\rm MeV}$. For the ratios of the vector-to-pseudoscalar decay constants we report $f_{D^*}/f_D= 1.221\pm 0.080_{\rm OPE}\pm 0.008_{\rm syst}$ and $f_{D^*_s}/f_{D_s}= 1.241\pm 0.057_{\rm OPE}\pm 0.007_{\rm syst}$.

K -> pi vector form factor with N_f=2+1+1 Twisted Mass fermions

We present a lattice QCD determination of the vector form factor of the kaon semileptonic decay K -> pi l nu which is relevant for the extraction of the CKM matrix element |V_{us}| from experimental data. Our result is based on the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with N_f=2+1+1 dynamical fermions. We simulated at three different values of the lattice spacing and with pion masses as small as 210 MeV. Our preliminary estimate for the vector form factor at zero momentum transfer is f_+(0)=0.9683(65), where the uncertainty is both statistical and systematic. By combining our result with the experimental value of f_+(0)|V_{us}| we obtain |V_{us}|=0.2234(16), which satisfies the unitarity constraint of the Standard Model at the permille level.

Our simulations feature pion masses ranging from $210$ MeV to approximately $450$ MeV and lattice spacing values as small as $0.06$fm. Our main result for the vector form factor at zero 4-momentum transfer is $f_+(0)=0.9683(65)$ where the uncertainty is both statistical and systematic. QCD Sum Rules for Heavy-Meson Decay Constants: Impact of Renormalization Scale and Scheme

Within the realm of QCD sum rules, one of the most important areas of application of this nonperturbative approach is the prediction of the decay constants of heavy mesons. However, in spite of the fact that, indisputably, the adopted techniques are, of course, very similar, we encounter rather dissimilar challenges, or obstacles, when extracting from two-point correlators of appropriate heavy-light currents interpolating the mesons, the characteristics of charmed mesons with different spin. In view of this, it seems worthwhile to us to revisit this issue for the case of charmed pseudoscalar mesons $D_{(s)}$ and vector mesons $D^*_{(s)}.$

$K$ and $D$ oscillations in the Standard Model and its extensions from $N_f=2+1+1$ Twisted Mass LQCD

We present the first $N_f=2+1+1$ results for the matrix elements of the operators describing neutral $K$ and $D$ mixing in the Standard Model and its extensions. The combination of maximally twisted sea quarks and Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks ensures $\mathcal{O}(a)$-improvement and continuum like renormalization pattern. We have used the $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical quark gauge configurations generated by ETMC. Simulations include three lattice spacings in the interval $[0.06:0.09]$ fm and pseudoscalar meson masses in the range $[230:500]$ MeV. Our results are extrapolated to the continuum limit and to the physical quark masses. The calculation of the renormalization constants has been performed non-perturbatively in the RI-MOM scheme.

Accurate bottom-quark mass from Borel QCD sum rules for $f_B$ and $f_{B_s}$

We prove that Borel QCD sum rules for heavy-light currents yield very strong correlations between the $b$-quark mass $m_b$ and the $B$-meson decay constant $f_B$, namely, $δf_B/f_B\approx -8\,δm_b/m_b$. This fact opens the possibility of an accurate sum-rule extraction of $m_b$ by using $f_B$ as input. Combining precise lattice QCD determinations of $f_B$ with our sum-rule analysis based on the three-loop $O(α_s^2)$ heavy-light correlation function leads to $\bar{m}_b(\bar{m}_b)=(4.247\pm0.034)\;\mbox{GeV}$.

Accurate Bottom-Quark Mass from Borel QCD Sum Rules for the Decay Constants of $B$ and $B_s$ Mesons

We show that in the context of QCD sum rules a strong (anti-) correlation between the $b$-quark mass $m_b$ and the $B$-meson's decay constant $f_B$ emerges: $δf_B/f_B\approx -8 δm_b/m_b.$ This observation allows us to derive a precise value of $m_b$ from a Borel sum rule for the two-point correlator of heavy-light currents exploiting accurate $f_B$ results from lattice QCD as input: $\bar{m}_b(\bar{m}_b)=(4.247\pm0.034)$ GeV.

Decay Constants of Heavy Pseudoscalar Mesons: Reconciling QCD Sum Rules and Lattice QCD

Exploiting recently proposed novel improvements of the techniques used for extracting from QCD sum rules pivotal hadron characteristics, including their systematic errors, we succeed to achieve a conspicuous agreement of the predictions of QCD sum rules for the decay constants $f_B$ and $f_{B_s}$ of the heavy pseudoscalar mesons $B$ and $B_s,$ which before tended to be slightly too large, with corresponding results from lattice QCD. Adopting for the crucial $b$-quark $\bar{\rm MS}$ mass the value $\bar{m}_b(\bar{m}_b)=(4.247\pm0.034)$ GeV, we get $f_B=(192.0\pm14.6)$ MeV and $f_{B_s}=(228.0\pm19.8)$ MeV; clearly, this may be also viewed as a determination of the $b$-quark mass from sufficiently precise decay constants.

Mass of the $b$ Quark from QCD Sum Rules for $f_{B_{(s)}}$

We demonstrate that Borel QCD sum rules for heavy-light currents entail a very strong correlation between the $b$-quark mass $m_b$ and the $B$-meson decay constant $f_B,$ that is, $δf_B/f_B\approx-8δm_b/m_b.$ By starting from $f_B$ as input, this observation allows for an accurate sum-rule determination of $m_b.$ Employing precise lattice QCD results for $f_B$ in our sum-rule study based on the three-loop $O(α_s^2)$ heavy-light correlation function implies $\bar{m}_b(\bar{m}_b)=(4.247\pm0.034)$ GeV for the $b$-quark $\bar{\rm MS}$ mass.

Charmed-Meson Decay Constants from Improved QCD Sum Rules

The decay constants of the charmed heavy pseudoscalar D and D_s mesons are revisited within a recently developed novel approach to dispersive QCD sum rules which relies on an unprejudiced implementation of quark-hadron duality. The proposed modification of the conventional sum-rule techniques is assessed by applying our prescriptions to quantum mechanics, where exact solutions may be easily obtained by simply solving the Schrödinger equation. The very striking similarity of the extraction procedures of bound-state parameters in potential models and in QCD gives us great confidence in the reliability of our improvements of the sum-rule formalism and their applicability to hadron phenomenology. The implications of one's chosen definition of the heavy-quark masses are scrutinized and the MS-bar quark-mass scheme is identified as the optimal choice for our purposes. Our ideas turn out to reconcile QCD sum-rule predictions for the charmed-meson decay constants (which before tended to be markedly too low) with the findings of both lattice QCD and experiment.

D-meson decay constants and a check of factorization in non-leptonic B-decays

We compute the vector meson decay constants fD*, fDs* from the simulation of twisted mass QCD on the lattice with Nf = 2 dynamical quarks. When combining their values with the pseudoscalar D(s)-meson decay constants, we were able (i) to show that the heavy quark spin symmetry breaking effects with the charm quark are large, fDs*/fDs = 1.26(3), and (ii) to check the factorization approximation in a few specific B-meson non-leptonic decay modes. Besides our main results, fD* = 278 \pm 13 \pm 10 MeV, and fDs* = 311 \pm 9 MeV, other phenomenologically interesting results of this paper are: fDs*/fD* = 1.16 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.06, fDs*/fD = 1.46 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.06, and fDs/fD* = 0.89 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.03. Finally, we correct the value for B(B0 \rightarrow D+ pi-) quoted by PDG, and find B(B0 \rightarrow D+ pi-) = (7.8 \pm 1.4) \times 10-7. Alternatively, by using the ratios discussed in this paper, we obtain B(B0 \rightarrow D+ pi-) = (8.3 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.8)\times10-7.

Quark mass and chiral condensate from the Wilson twisted mass lattice quark propagator

In this work, we report about the determination of nonperturbative OPE parameters from fits of continuum perturbation theory to the Landau gauge quark propagator. The propagators are computed numerically using lattice QCD with Nf=2 dynamical Wilson twisted mass fermions. We use four different values of the lattice spacing ranging from about 0.1 fm to about 0.05 fm as well as several quark masses per lattice spacing. This allows us to obtain continuum results for the chiral condensate and the average up/down quark mass. The main results are the average up/down quark mass m_q = 3.0(4)(2) MeV at the physical point and a value of the chiral condensate of -(299(26)(29) MeV)^3 in the chiral limit, both in the MSbar scheme at 2 GeV. We have also studied nonperturbative contaminations of our results at small values of the momenta, which are often interpreted as the contribution of the gluon condensate A^2. We do see contributions from such terms, which are, however, not stable over the order in perturbation theory.

Improved QCD Sum-Rule Approach to Heavy-Meson Decay Constants

A visible improvement of the QCD sum-rule framework, achieved only recently by a slightly more sophisticated consideration of the hadron excitations and continuum, is applied to the extraction of the decay constants of heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons from two-point correlators of heavy-light pseudoscalar currents. This analysis is carried out entirely in terms of the running heavy-quark mass, for which the perturbative expansion exhibits a passable convergence. Our main concern is to gain control over both statistical and systematic uncertainties of the extracted decay constants, the former being induced by the QCD parameter values requested for input, the latter arising from the intrinsically limited accuracy of the QCD sum-rule techniques.

OPE, charm-quark mass, and decay constants of D and D_s mesons from QCD sum rules

We present a sum-rule extraction of the decay constants of the charmed mesons D and D_s from the two-point correlator of pseudoscalar currents. First, we compare the perturbative expansion for the correlator and the decay constant performed in terms of the pole and the running MSbar masses of the charm quark. The perturbative expansion in terms of the pole mass shows no signs of convergence whereas reorganizing this very expansion in terms of the MSbar mass leads to a distinct hierarchy of the perturbative expansion. Furthermore, the decay constants extracted from the pole-mass correlator turn out to be considerably smaller than those obtained by means of the MSbar-mass correlator. Second, making use of the OPE in terms of the MSbar mass, we determine the decay constants of both D and D_s mesons with an emphasis on the uncertainties in these quantities related both to the input QCD parameters and to the limited accuracy of the method of sum rules.

Review of lattice results concerning low energy particle physics

We review lattice results relevant for pion and kaon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the particle physics community. Specifically, we review the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor f_+(0), relevant for the semileptonic K -> pi transition at zero momentum transfer as well as the ratio f_K/f_pi of decay constants and discuss the consequences for the elements V_{us} and V_{ud} of the CKM matrix. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of SU(2)_LxSU(2)_R and SU(3)_LxSU(3)_R Chiral Perturbation Theory and review the determination of the B_K parameter of neutral kaon mixing. We introduce quality criteria and use these when forming averages. Although subjective and imperfect, these criteria may help the reader to judge different aspects of current lattice computations. Our main results are summarized in section 1.2, but we stress the importance of the detailed discussion that underlies these results and constitutes the bulk of the present review.

Unprejudiced Look at Effective Continuum Thresholds in Borel Dispersive Sum Rules

Dispersive sum rules constitute long-standing tools for extracting hadron features from QCD. We estimate the systematic uncertainties induced by assuming quark-hadron duality and improve the accuracy of the resulting predictions by elevating the effective thresholds involved in this approximation from constants to functions of momenta and a parameter entering upon Borel transformation. A rigorous scrutiny of the applicability of our proposed sum-rule modifications to QCD gives us great confidence that our sum-rule alterations will prove to be fruitful for hadron phenomenology.

Decay constants of heavy mesons from QCD sum rules

We present a sum-rule extraction of the decay constants of the D, Ds, B, and Bs mesons from the two-point correlator of heavy-light pseudoscalar currents [1]. Our main emphasis is laid on the control over the uncertainties in the decay constants, related both to the input QCD parameters and to the limited accuracy of the method of sum rules. Gaining this control has become possible due to the application of our novel procedure for extracting hadron observables based on a dual threshold depending on the Borel parameter. For charmed mesons, we obtain f_D=206.2\pm 7.3 (OPE)\pm 5.1 (syst) MeV and f_Ds=245.3\pm 15.7 (OPE) \pm 4.5 (syst) MeV. For beauty mesons, the decay constants turn out to be extremely sensitive to the precise value of the MSbar mass of the b-quark, mb(mb). By requiring our sum-rule estimate to match the average of lattice determinations of f_B, a very accurate value is extracted, mb(mb)=4.245\pm 0.025 GeV, yielding f_B = 193.4 \pm 12.3 (OPE) \pm 4.3 (syst) MeV and f_Bs = 232.5 \pm 18.6 (OPE) \pm 2.4 (syst) MeV.

Decay constants of heavy pseudoscalar mesons from QCD sum rules

We revisit the sum-rule extraction of the decay constants of the D, Ds, B, and Bs mesons from the two-point correlator of heavy-light pseudoscalar currents. We use the operator product expansion for this correlator expressed in terms of the MSbar heavy-quark mass, for which the perturbative expansion exhibits a reasonable convergence. Our main emphasis is laid on the control over the uncertainties in the decay constants, related both to the input QCD parameters and to the limited accuracy of the method of sum-rules. This becomes possible due to the application of our procedure of extracting hadron observables that involves as novel feature dual thresholds depending on the Borel parameter. For charmed mesons, we find the decay constants f_D=206.2\pm 7.3(OPE)\pm 5.1(syst) MeV and f_Ds=245.3\pm 15.7(OPE)\pm 4.5(syst) MeV. For beauty mesons, the decay constants turn out to be extremely sensitive to the precise value of mb(mb). By requiring our sum-rule estimate to match the average of the lattice results for f_B, a very accurate value mb(mb)=4.245\pm 0.025 GeV is extracted, leading to f_B=193.4\pm 12.3(OPE)\pm 4.3(syst) MeV and f_Bs=232.5\pm 18.6(OPE)\pm 2.4(syst) MeV.

Effective Continuum Thresholds for Quark-Hadron Duality in Dispersive Sum Rules

Modifying the standard approaches to nonperturbative QCD based on Borel-transformed dispersive sum rules by allowing the effective continuum thresholds required for the implementation of quark-hadron duality to depend on the Borel parameters and on any relevant momentum promises to provide higher accuracy and reliable error estimates for the extracted predictions of hadron characteristics. A careful analysis reveals that the exact effective continuum thresholds do indeed exhibit dependence on the Borel parameter (and on external momenta) and that they are not universal but vary with the correlators under consideration. The striking similarity of our hadron-parameter extraction procedures in QCD, on the one hand, and quantum-theoretical potential models, on the other hand, calls for application of the proposed techniques in QCD.

Extraction of bound-state parameters from dispersive sum rules

The procedure of extracting the ground-state parameters from vacuum-to-vacuum and vacuum-to-hadron correlators within the method of sum rules is considered. The emphasis is laid on the crucial ingredient of this method - the effective continuum threshold. A new algorithm to fix this quantity is proposed and tested. First, a quantum-mechanical potential model which provides the only possibility to probe the reliability and the actual accuracy of the sum-rule method is used as a study case. In this model, our algorithm is shown to lead to a remarkable improvement of the accuracy of the extracted ground-state parameters compared to the standard procedures adopted in the method and used in all previous applications of dispersive sum rules in QCD. As a next step, it is demonstrated that the procedures of extracting the ground-state decay constant in the potential model and in QCD are quantitatively very close to each other. Therefore, the application of the proposed algorithm in QCD promises a considerable increase of the accuracy of the extracted hadron parameters.

Heavy-meson decay constants from QCD sum rules

We sketch a recent sum-rule extraction of the decay constants of the heavy pseudoscalar mesons D, D_s, B, and B_s from the two-point correlator of heavy-light pseudoscalar currents [1]. Our main emphasis lies on the control over all the uncertainties in the decay constants, related both to the input QCD parameters and to the limited accuracy of the method of sum rules. Gaining this control has become possible by application of our new procedure of extracting hadron observables based on a dual threshold depending on the Borel parameter. For the charmed-meson decay constants, we find f_D=206.2\pm 7.3(OPE) \pm 5.1(syst) MeV, f_Ds=245.3\pm 15.7(OPE) \pm 4.5(syst) MeV. For the beauty mesons, the decay constants turn out to be extremely sensitive to the precise value of the MSbar mass of the b-quark, mb(mb). By requiring our sum-rule estimate to match the average of the lattice determinations of f_B, we extract the rather accurate value mb(mb)=(4.245\pm 0.025) GeV. Feeding this parameter value into our sum-rule formalism leads to the beauty-meson decay constants f_B = 193.4 \pm 12.3(OPE) \pm 4.3(syst) MeV, f_Bs =232.5 \pm 18.6(OPE) \pm 2.4(syst) MeV.

Heavy-Quark Mass and Heavy-Meson Decay Constants from QCD Sum Rules

We present a sum-rule extraction of heavy-meson decay constants from the two-point correlator of heavy-light pseudoscalar currents. Our main concern is to control the uncertainties of the decay constants, induced by both input QCD parameters and limited accuracy of the sum-rule method. Gaining this control is possible by applying our novel procedure for the extraction of hadron observables utilizing Borel-parameter-depending dual thresholds. For the charmed mesons, we obtain f_D = 206.2 \pm 7.3 (OPE) \pm 5.1 (syst) MeV and f_{D_s} = 245.3 \pm 15.7 (OPE) \pm 4.5 (syst) MeV. For the beauty mesons, the decay constants prove to be extremely sensitive to the exact value of the b-quark MS-bar mass m_b(m_b). Matching our sum-rule prediction for f_B to the lattice findings, the very accurate b-mass value m_b(m_b) = 4.245 \pm 0.025 GeV is found, which yields f_B = 193.4 \pm 12.3 (OPE) \pm 4.3 (syst) MeV and f_{B_s} = 232.5 \pm 18.6 (OPE) \pm 2.4 (syst) MeV.

OPE, Heavy-Quark Mass, and Heavy-Meson Decay Constants from QCD Sum Rules

We present a sum-rule extraction of the decay constants of heavy-light mesons from the two-point correlator of pseudoscalar currents. To this end, we compare the perturbative expansions for the correlator and the decay constant performed in terms of either the pole mass or the running MS-bar mass of the heavy quark. The perturbative expansion expressed in terms of the pole mass exhibits no sign of convergence whereas reorganizing this very expansion in terms of the MS-bar mass yields a rather clear hierarchy of the perturbative contributions. Accordingly, the decay constants extracted from the pole-mass correlator turn out to be considerably smaller than those extracted from its MS-bar-mass counterpart. Then, making use of the OPE in terms of the MS-bar mass we derive the decay constants of heavy mesons with emphasis on acquiring control over the uncertainties in the decay constants, related both to the input QCD parameters and to the limited accuracy of the method of sum rules. Gaining this control has become possible due to the application of our novel procedure for extracting hadron observables based on dual thresholds which depend on the Borel parameter.

Quark-Hadron Duality and Effective Continuum Thresholds in Dispersive Sum Rules

A novel procedure for extracting hadron characteristics from QCD sum rules, based on effective continuum thresholds (necessary for the implementation of quark-hadron duality) which may depend on the involved momenta and on the Borel parameter(s), enables us to quantify the uncertainties induced by the quark-hadron duality approximation and to achieve a significantly higher accuracy of our predictions for the properties of hadronic bound states.

Bound-state parameters from dispersive sum rules for vacuum-to-vacuum correlators

We study the extraction of the ground-state parameters from vacuum-to-vacuum correlators. We work in quantum-mechanical potential model which provides the only possibility to probe the reliability and the actual accuracy of this method: one obtains the bound-state parameters from the correlators by the standard procedures adopted in the method of sum rules and compares these results with the exact values calculated from the Schroedinger equation. We focus on the crucial ingredient of the method of sum rules - the effective continuum threshold - and propose a new algorithm to fix this quantity. In a quantum-mechanical model, our procedure leads to a remarkable improvement of the accuracy of the extracted ground-state parameters compared to the standard procedures adopted in the method and used in all previous applications of dispersive sum rules in QCD. The application of the proposed procedure in QCD promises a considerable increase of the accuracy of the extracted hadron parameters.

Effective continuum threshold for vacuum-to-bound-state correlators

We formulate a new algorithm for obtaining the effective continuum threshold in vacuum-to-bound-state correlators - the basic objects for the calculation of hadron form factors in the method of light-cone sum rules in QCD. The effective continuum threshold is one of the key ingredients of the method which to a large extent determines the value of the form factor extracted from the relevant correlator. In a quantum-mechanical potential model, where the exact form factor is known, the application of our algorithm is shown to lead to a dramatic increase of the accuracy of the extracted form factor compared to the standard procedures adopted in the method of sum rules in QCD. Moreover, the application of our algorithm considerably enlarges the range of the momentum transfer where the form factor may be extracted from the correlator.

Extraction of ground-state decay constant from dispersive sum rules: QCD vs potential models

We compare the extraction of the ground-state decay constant from the two-point correlator in QCD and in potential models and show that the results obtained at each step of the extraction procedure follow a very similar pattern. We prove that allowing for a Borel-parameter-dependent effective continuum threshold yields two essential improvements compared to employing a Borel-parameter-independent quantity: (i) It reduces considerably the (unphysical) dependence of the extracted bound-state mass and the decay constant on the Borel parameter. (ii) In a potential model, where the actual value of the decay constant is known from the Schroedinger equation, a Borel-parameter-dependent threshold leads to an improvement of the accuracy of the extraction procedure. Our findings suggest that in QCD a Borel-parameter dependent threshold leads to a more reliable and accurate determination of bound-state characteristics by the method of sum rules.

The effective continuum threshold in dispersive sum rules

We study the accuracy of the bound-state parameters obtained with the method of dispersive sum rules, one of the most popular theoretical approaches in nonperturbative QCD and hadron physics. We make use of a quantum-mechanical potential model since it provides the only possibility to probe the reliability and the accuracy of this method: one obtains the bound-state parameters from sum rules and compares these results with the exact values calculated from the Schrödinger equation. We investigate various possibilities to fix the crucial ingredient of the method of sum rules -- the effective continuum threshold -- and propose modifications which lead to a remarkable improvement of the accuracy of the extracted ground-state parameters compared to the standard procedures adopted in the method. Although the rigorous control of systematic uncertainties in the method of sum rules remains unfeasible, the application of the proposed procedures in QCD promises a considerable increase of the actual accuracy of the extracted hadron parameters.

Accuracy of bound-state form factors extracted from dispersive sum rules

We discuss the extraction of form factors from three-point sum rules making use of harmonic-oscillator model, where we derive the exact expression for the relevant correlator. We determine the form factor of the ground state by the standard procedures adopted in the method of sum rules, and compare the obtained results with the known exact values. We show that the uncontrollable uncertainty in the extracted value of the form factor is typically much larger than that for the decay constant. In the example considered, we find the uncontrolled systematic error in the extracted form factor to exceed the 10% level.

Longitudinal structure function of the proton at low momentum transfer and extended constituents

Recent data on the (inelastic) Nachtmann moments of the unpolarized proton structure function F2p, obtained at low momentum transfer with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab, have been interpreted in terms of the dominance of the elastic coupling of the virtual photon with extended substructures inside the proton. Adopting the same constituent form factors and the same light-front wave function describing the motion of the constituents in the proton, the (inelastic) Nachtmann moments of the longitudinal proton structure function FLp are calculated (without further parameters) for values of the squared four-momentum transfer 0.2 < Q**2 (GeV/c)**2 < 2. The different role played by the Pauli form factor of the constituents in the transverse and longitudinal channels is illustrated. Our predictions, including an estimate of the theoretical uncertainties, may be checked against the forthcoming results of the experiment E94110 at Jefferson Lab. A positive comparison with the new data may provide compelling evidence that constituent quarks are intermediate substructures between the hadrons and the current quarks and gluons of QCD.
