Hadronic susceptibilities for b to c transitions from two point correlation functions

We present a lattice determination of the hadronic susceptibilities that, thanks to unitarity and analyticity, constrain the form factors entering the semileptonic $b\rightarrow c$ transitions. We evaluate the transverse and longitudinal susceptibilities of the vector and axial polarization functions at zero momentum transfer from the moments of appropriate two-point correlation functions. The latter are obtained on the lattice employing gauge ensembles of the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f$=2+1+1 flavors of Wilson-clover twisted-mass quarks with masses of all the dynamical quark flavors tuned close to their physical values. The simulations are carried out at four values of the lattice spacing, $a \simeq (0.057,0.068, 0.080, 0.091)$ fm, with spatial lattice sizes up to $L \simeq 7.6$ fm. Heavy-quark masses up to $\approx 3.5$ times the physical charm mass are employed, allowing for a smooth extrapolation to the physical b-quark mass.

Direct lattice calculation of inclusive hadronic decay rates of the $τ$ lepton

The inclusive hadronic decay-rates of the $τ$ lepton are particularly interesting from the phenomenological point of view since they give access to the CKM matrix elements $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$. In this talk, we discuss how a recent method for the extraction of smeared spectral densities from Euclidean lattice correlators can be used to obtain a direct lattice determination of inclusive hadronic $τ$ decay rates. We also present preliminary numerical results obtained by applying this method to correlators measured on two gauge ensembles produced by the ETMC with $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical flavours at physical pion masses, lattice spacing $a\simeq 0.08$ fm and volumes $L\simeq 5.1$ fm and $L\simeq 7.6$ fm.

On the study of inclusive semileptonic decays of $B_s$-meson from lattice QCD

In this contribution we describe a recent study focused on the lattice calculation of inclusive decay rates of heavy mesons. We show how the inclusive calculation can be achieved starting from four-point lattice correlation functions normalised appropriately. The correlators used in this project come from gauge ensembles provided by the JLQCD and ETM collaborations. An essential point of this method is the extraction of spectral densities from lattice correlators which is obtained using two of the most recent approaches in the literature. Our results are in remarkable agreement with analytical predictions from the operator-product expansion. This study represents the first step towards a full lattice QCD study of heavy mesons inclusive semileptonic decays.

Lattice QCD study of inclusive semileptonic decays of heavy mesons

We present an ab initio study of inclusive semileptonic decays of heavy mesons from lattice QCD. Our approach is based on a recently proposed method, that allows one to address the study of these decays from the analysis of smeared spectral functions extracted from four-point correlators on the lattice, where the smearing is defined in terms of the phase-space integration relevant to the inclusive decays. We present results obtained from gauge-field ensembles from the JLQCD and ETM collaborations, and discuss their relation with theoretical predictions from the operator-product expansion.

Confining and chiral properties of QCD in extremely strong magnetic fields

We investigate, by numerical lattice simulations, the static quark-antiquark potential, the flux tube properties and the chiral condensate for $N_f = 2+1$ QCD with physical quark masses in the presence of strong magnetic fields, going up to $eB = 9$ GeV$^2$, with continuum extrapolated results. The string tension for quark-antiquark separations longitudinal to the magnetic field is suppressed by one order of magnitude at the largest explored magnetic field with respect to its value at zero magnetic background, but is still non-vanishing; in the transverse direction, instead, the string tension is enhanced but seems to reach a saturation at around 50 % of its value at $B = 0$. The flux tube shows a consistent suppression/enhancement of the overall amplitude, with mild modifications of its profile. Finally, we observe magnetic catalysis in the whole range of explored fields with a behavior compatible with a lowest Landau level approximation, in particular with a linear dependence of the chiral condensate on $B$ which is in agreement, within errors, with that already observed for $eB \sim 1$ GeV$^2$.

Phase diagram of QCD in a magnetic background

We provide numerical evidence that the thermal QCD crossover turns into a first order transition in the presence of large enough magnetic background fields. The critical endpoint is found to be located between $eB = 4$ GeV$^2$ (where the pseudocritical temperature is $T_c = (98 \pm 3)$ MeV) and $eB = 9$ GeV$^2$ (where the critical temperature is $T_c = (63 \pm 5)$ MeV). Results are based on the analysis of quark condensates and number susceptibilities, determined by lattice simulations of $N_f = 2+1$ QCD at the physical point, discretized with three different lattice spacings, $a = 0.114, 0.086$ and $0.057$ fm, via rooted stout staggered fermions and a Symanzik tree level improved pure gauge action. We also present preliminary results regarding the confining properties of the thermal theory, suggesting that they could change drastically going across the phase transition

We present a preliminary study of the pion, kaon and D-meson masses and decay constants in isosymmetric QCD, as well as a preliminary result for the light-quark renormalized mass. The analysis is based on the gauge ensembles produced by ETMC with $N_f=2+1+1$ flavours of Wilson-clover twisted mass quarks, spanning a range of lattice spacings from $\sim0.10$ to $0.07$ fm and include configurations at the physical pion point on lattices with linear size up to $L~\sim~5.6$~fm

Topology via Spectral Projectors with Staggered Fermions

The spectral projectors method is a way to obtain a theoretically well posed definition of the topological susceptibility on the lattice. Up to now this method has been defined and applied only to Wilson fermions. The goal of this work is to extend the method to staggered fermions, giving a definition for the staggered topological susceptibility and testing it in the pure $SU(3)$ gauge theory. Besides, we also generalize the method to higher-order cumulants of the topological charge distribution.

An exploratory study of heavy domain wall fermions on the lattice

We report on an exploratory study of domain wall fermions (DWF) as a lattice regularisation for heavy quarks. Within the framework of quenched QCD with the tree-level improved Symanzik gauge action we identify the DWF parameters which minimise discretisation effects. We find the corresponding effective 4$d$ overlap operator to be exponentially local, independent of the quark mass. We determine a maximum bare heavy quark mass of $am_h\approx 0.4$, below which the approximate chiral symmetry and O(a)-improvement of DWF are sustained. This threshold appears to be largely independent of the lattice spacing. Based on these findings, we carried out a detailed scaling study for the heavy-strange meson dispersion relation and decay constant on four ensembles with lattice spacings in the range $2.0-5.7\,\mathrm{GeV}$. We observe very mild $a^2$ scaling towards the continuum limit. Our findings establish a sound basis for heavy DWF in dynamical simulations of lattice QCD with relevance to Standard Model phenomenology.

Axion phenomenology and $θ$-dependence from $N_f = 2+1$ lattice QCD

We investigate the topological properties of $N_f = 2+1$ QCD with physical quark masses, both at zero and finite temperature. We adopt stout improved staggered fermions and explore a range of lattice spacings $a \sim 0.05 - 0.12$ fm. At zero temperature we estimate both finite size and finite cut-off effects, comparing our continuum extrapolated results for the topological susceptibility $χ$ with predictions from chiral perturbation theory. At finite temperature, we explore a region going from $T_c$ up to around $4\, T_c$, where we provide continuum extrapolated results for the topological susceptibility and for the fourth moment of the topological charge distribution. While the latter converges to the dilute instanton gas prediction the former differs strongly both in the size and in the temperature dependence. This results in a shift of the axion dark matter window of almost one order of magnitude with respect to the instanton computation.

Charm Physics with Domain Wall Fermions and Physical Pion Masses

We present RBC/UKQCD's charm project using $N_f=2+1$ flavour ensembles with inverse lattice spacings in the range $1.73-2.77\,\mathrm{GeV}$ and two physical pion mass ensembles. Domain wall fermions are used for the light as well as the charm quarks. We discuss our strategy for the extraction of the decay constants $f_D$ and $f_{D_s}$ and their extrapolation to the continuum limit, physical pion masses and the physical heavy quark mass. Our preliminary results are $f_D=208.7(2.8)\,\mathrm{MeV}$ and $f_{D_s}=246.4(1.9)\,\mathrm{MeV}$ where the quoted error is statistical only. We outline our current approach to extend the reach in the heavy quark mass and present preliminary results.

Magnetic field effects on the static quark potential at zero and finite temperature

We investigate the static $Q\bar{Q}$ potential at zero and finite temperature in the presence of a constant and uniform external magnetic field $\vec{B}$, for several values of the lattice spacing and for different orientations with respect to $\vec{B}$. As a byproduct, we provide continuum limit extrapolated results for the string tension, the Coulomb coupling and the Sommer parameter at $T = 0$ and $B = 0$. We confirm the presence in the continuum of a $B$-induced anisotropy, regarding essentially the string tension, for which it is of the order of 15\% at $|e| B \sim 1~{\rm GeV}^2$ and would suggest, if extrapolated to larger fields, a vanishing string tension along the magnetic field for $|e| B \gtrsim 4$ GeV$^2$. The angular dependence for $|e| B \lesssim 1$ GeV$^2$ can be nicely parametrized by the first allowed term in an angular Fourier expansion, corresponding to a quadrupole deformation. Finally, for $T \neq 0$, the main effect of the magnetic field is a general suppression of the string tension, leading to a precocious loss of the confining properties: this happens even before the appearance of inverse magnetic catalysis in the chiral condensate, supporting the idea that the influence of the magnetic field on the confining properties is the leading effect originating the decrease of $T_c$ as a function of $B$.

Metadynamics Surfing on Topology Barriers: the $CP^{N-1}$ Case

As one approaches the continuum limit, $QCD$ systems, investigated via numerical simulations, remain trapped in sectors of field space with fixed topological charge. As a consequence the numerical studies of physical quantities may give biased results. The same is true in the case of two dimensional $CP^{N-1}$ models. In this paper we show that metadynamics, when used to simulate $CP^{N-1}$, allows to address efficiently this problem. By studying $CP^{20}$ we show that we are able to reconstruct the free energy of the topological charge $F(Q)$ and compute the topological susceptibility as a function of the coupling and of the volume. This is a very important physical quantity in studies of the dynamics of the $θ$ vacuum and of the axion. This method can in principle be extended to $QCD$ applications.

Pion structure from twisted mass lattice QCD down to the physical pion mass

We present an investigation of pion structure based on ETMC $N_f=2$ and $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass configurations at maximal twist. We compute the first moment of the quark momentum fraction of the pion, $\langle x \rangle$ and the electromagnetic form factor, $F_π(Q^2)$. For the latter, momentum is injected using twisted boundary conditions and the calculation is carried out directly at the physical pion mass. We find that our data are consistent with vector meson dominance and experimental data in the region of small momentum transfer. For $\langle x \rangle$, we find that our chirally and continuum extrapolated result is compatible with its phenomenological value.

Roberge-Weiss endpoint at the physical point of $N_f = 2+1$ QCD

We study the phase diagram of $N_f = 2+1$ QCD in the $T - μ_B$ plane and investigate the critical point corresponding to the onset of the Roberge-Weiss transition, which is found for imaginary values of $μ_B$. We make use of stout improved staggered fermions and of the tree level Symanzik gauge action, and explore four different sets of lattice spacings, corresponding to $N_t = 4,6,8,10$, and different spatial sizes, in order to assess the universality class of the critical point. The continuum extrapolated value of the endpoint temperature is found to be $T_{\rm RW} = 208(5)$ MeV, i.e. $T_{\rm RW}/T_c \sim 1.34(7)$, where $T_c$ is the chiral pseudocritical temperature at zero chemical potential, while our finite size scaling analysis, performed on $N_t = 4$ and $N_t = 6$ lattices, provides evidence for a critical point in the $3d$ Ising universality class.

Charm physics with Moebius Domain Wall Fermions

We present results showing that Domain Wall fermions are a suitable discretisation for the simulation of heavy quarks. This is done by a continuum scaling study of charm quarks in a Möbius Domain Wall formalism using a quenched set-up. We find that discretisation effects remain well controlled by the choice of Domain Wall parameters preparing the ground work for the ongoing dynamical $2+1f$ charm program of RBC/UKQCD.

Curvature of the chiral pseudo-critical line in QCD

We determine the curvature of the pseudo-critical line of strong interactions by means of numerical simulations at imaginary chemical potentials. We consider $N_f=2+1$ stout improved staggered fermions with physical quark masses and the tree level Symanzik gauge action, and explore two different sets of lattice spacings, corresponding to temporal extensions $N_t = 6$ and $N_t = 8$. Both the renormalized chiral condensate and the renormalized chiral susceptibility are used to locate the transition. The determinations obtained from the two quantities are in good agreement, a preliminary continuum extrapolation yields $κ= 0.013(2)(1)$. We also investigate the impact of a non-zero strange quark chemical potential and compare our results to previous determinations in the literature, discussing the possible sources of systematic errors affecting the various procedures.

Precision study of critical slowing down in lattice simulations of the CP^{N-1} model

With the aim of studying the relevance and properties of critical slowing down in Monte Carlo simulations of lattice quantum field theories we carried out a high precision numerical study of the discretised two-dimensional CP^{N-1} model at N=10 using an over-heat bath algorithm. We identify critical slowing down in terms of slowly-evolving topological modes and present evidence that other observables couple to these slow modes. This coupling is found to reduce however as we increase the physical volume in which we simulate.

The kaon semileptonic form factor in Nf=2+1 domain wall lattice QCD with physical light quark masses

We present the first calculation of the kaon semileptonic form factor with sea and valence quark masses tuned to their physical values in the continuum limit of 2+1 flavour domain wall lattice QCD. We analyse a comprehensive set of simulations at the phenomenologically convenient point of zero momentum transfer in large physical volumes and for two different values of the lattice spacing. Our prediction for the form factor is f+(0)=0.9685(34)(14) where the first error is statistical and the second error systematic. This result can be combined with experimental measurements of K->pi decays for a determination of the CKM-matrix element for which we predict |Vus|=0.2233(5)(9) where the first error is from experiment and the second error from the lattice computation.

'Bs --> Ds l nu' near zero recoil in and beyond the Standard Model

We compute the normalization of the form factor entering the Bs --> Ds l nu decay amplitude by using numerical simulations of QCD on the lattice. From our study with Nf=2 dynamical light quarks, and by employing the maximally twisted Wilson quark action, we obtain in the continuum limit G(1) = 1.052(46). We also compute the scalar and tensor form factors in the region near zero recoil and find f0(t0)/f+(t0)=0.77(2), fT(t0,mb)/f+(t0)=1.08(7), for t0=11.5 GeV^2. These latter results are useful for searching the effects of physics beyond the Standard Model in Bs --> Ds l nu decays. Our results for the similar form factors relevant to the non-strange case indicate that the method employed here can be used to achieve the precision determination of the B --> D l nu decay amplitude as well.

Anisotropy of the quark-antiquark potential in a magnetic field

We investigate the static $\overline{Q}Q$-potential for $N_f = 2+1$ QCD at the physical point in the presence of a constant and uniform external magnetic field. The potential is found to be anisotropic and steeper in the directions transverse to the magnetic field than in the longitudinal one. In particular, when compared to the standard case with zero background field, the string tension increases (decreases) in the transverse (longitudinal) direction, while the absolute value of the Coulomb coupling and the Sommer parameter show an opposite behavior.

Insight into $D/B\to π\ell ν_\ell$ decay using the pole models

After improving the knowledge about residua of the semileptonic form factor at its first two poles we show that $f_+^{Dπ}(q^2)$ is not saturated when compared with the experimental data. To fill the difference we approximate the rest of discontinuity by an effective pole and show that the data can be described very well with the position of the effective pole larger than the next excitation in the spectrum of $D^\ast$ state. The results of fits with experimental data also suggest the validity of superconvergence which in the pole models translates to a vanishing of the sum of residua of the form factor at all poles. A similar discussion in the case of $B\to π\ellν_\ell$ leads to the possibility of extracting $\vert V_{ub}\vert$, the error of which appears to be dominated by $g_{B^\ast Bπ}$, which can be nowadays computed on the lattice. In evaluating the residua of the form factors at their nearest pole we needed the vector meson decay constants $f_{D^\ast}$ and $f_{B^\ast}$, which we computed by using the numerical simulations of QCD on the lattice with $N_{\rm f}=2$ dynamical quarks. We obtain, $f_{D^\ast}/f_D=1.208(27)$ and $f_{B^\ast}/f_B=1.051(17)$.

Lattice QCD and QCD Sum Rule determination of the decay constants of eta_c, J/psi and hc states

We compute the decay constants of the lowest ccbar-states with quantum numbers J(PC)=0(-+) [eta_c], 1(--) [J/psi], and 1(+-) [hc] by using lattice QCD and QCD sum rules. We consider the coupling of J/psi to both the vector and tensor currents. Lattice QCD results are obtained from the unquenched (Nf=2) simulations using twisted mass QCD at four lattice spacings, allowing us to take the continuum limit. On the QCD sum rule side we use the moment sum rules. The results are then used to discuss the rate of eta_c --> gamma gamma decay, and to comment on the factorization in B --> X K decays, with X being either eta_c or J/psi.

Lattice QCD estimate of the $η_{c}(2S)\to J/ψγ$ decay rate

We compute the hadronic matrix element relevant to the physical radiative decay $η_{c}(2S)\to J/ψγ$ by means of lattice QCD. We use the (maximally) twisted mass QCD action with Nf=2 light dynamical quarks and from the computations made at four lattice spacings we were able to take the continuum limit. The value of the mass ratio $m_{η_c(2S)}/m_{η_c(1S)}$ we obtain is consistent with the experimental value, and our prediction for the form factor is $V^{η_{c}(2S)\to J/ψγ}(0)\equiv V_{12}(0)=0.32(6)(2)$, leading to $Γ(η_c (2S) \to J/ψγ) = (15.7\pm 5.7)$ keV, which is much larger than $Γ(ψ(2S) \to η_cγ)$ and within reach of modern experiments.

Lattice QCD study of $B_s\to D_s \ell \barν_\ell$ decay near zero recoil

We study the hadronic matrix elements describing the $B_s \to D_s\ell \barν_\ell$ decay in and beyond the Standard Model. By using the twisted mass QCD on the lattice with $N_f=2$ dynamical flavors we compute the normalization $\mathscr G_s(1)$ of the form factor dominating $B_s\to D_s \ell \barν_\ell$ in the SM. We also make the first lattice determination of $F_0(q^2)/F_+(q^2)$ and $F_T(q^2)/F_+(q^2)$ near zero recoil (near $q^2_{\rm max}$). We briefly discuss the non-strange case $B \to D\ell \barν_\ell$ as well.

Magnetic susceptibility and equation of state of N_f = 2+1 QCD with physical quark masses

We determine the free energy of strongly interacting matter as a function of an applied constant and uniform magnetic field. We consider N_f = 2+1 QCD with physical quark masses, discretized on a lattice by stout improved staggered fermions and a tree level improved Symanzik pure gauge action, and explore three different lattice spacings. For magnetic fields of the order of those produced in non-central heavy ion collisions (eB ~ 0.1 GeV^2) strongly interacting matter behaves like a medium with a linear response, and is paramagnetic both above and below the deconfinement transition, with a susceptibility which steeply rises in the deconfined phase. We compute the equation of state, showing that the relative increase in the pressure due to the magnetic field gets larger around the transition, and of the order of 10 % for eB ~ 0.1 GeV^2.

The chiral phase transition in two-flavor QCD from imaginary chemical potential

We investigate the order of the finite temperature chiral symmetry restoration transition for QCD with two massless fermions, by using a novel method, based on simulating imaginary values of the quark chemical potential $μ=iμ_i,μ_i\in\mathbb{R}$. Our method exploits the fact that, for low enough quark mass $m$ and large enough chemical potential $μ_i$, the chiral transition is decidedly first order, then turning into crossover at a critical mass $m_c(μ)$. It is thus possible to determine the critical line in the $m - μ^2$ plane, which can be safely extrapolated to the chiral limit by taking advantage of the known tricritical indices governing its shape. We test this method with standard staggered fermions and the result of our simulations is that $m_c(μ=0)$ is positive, so that the phase transition at zero density is definitely first order in the chiral limit, on our coarse $N_t=4$ lattices with $a\simeq 0.3\,\mathrm{fm}$.

$K$ and $D$ oscillations in the Standard Model and its extensions from $N_f=2+1+1$ Twisted Mass LQCD

We present the first $N_f=2+1+1$ results for the matrix elements of the operators describing neutral $K$ and $D$ mixing in the Standard Model and its extensions. The combination of maximally twisted sea quarks and Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks ensures $\mathcal{O}(a)$-improvement and continuum like renormalization pattern. We have used the $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical quark gauge configurations generated by ETMC. Simulations include three lattice spacings in the interval $[0.06:0.09]$ fm and pseudoscalar meson masses in the range $[230:500]$ MeV. Our results are extrapolated to the continuum limit and to the physical quark masses. The calculation of the renormalization constants has been performed non-perturbatively in the RI-MOM scheme.

On the significance of B-decays to radially excited D

We discuss the possibilities of testing the recent claims of a relatively large value of the B --> D' transition form factor through B0--> D' pi+ and B- --> D' pi- decay modes. To estimate the width of the latter we need the decay constant of the radially excited D-meson that we computed in lattice QCD with Nf=2 dynamical flavors and after taking the continuum limit we found f(D')=117(25) MeV. The magnetic susceptibility in QCD

Recently much work has been devoted to the study of QCD coupled to a background magnetic field. Strongly interacting matter acts as a magnetic medium and it is natural to study the properties of this medium, in particular to understand if it behaves like a diamagnetic or a paramagnetic material. A serious difficulty in studying these properties by means of LQCD simulations is the quantization of the magnetic field in a toroidal geometry. We will expose a method to overcome this difficulty and we will present data obtained for the $N_f=2$ theory that show that the QCD medium is paramagnetic.

Our computation is made on the gauge field configurations that include $N_f=2$ dynamical light quarks by using the twisted mass QCD action. From the results obtained at four different lattice spacings we were able to take for the first time the continuum limit of this quantity computed on the lattice. Our final value, $g_c=0.53(3)(3)$, leads to $Γ(D^{\ast +}\to \bar{D}^0 π^+)= (50\pm 5\pm 6)$ keV, and is in good agreement with the experimental results for the width of the charged $D^\ast$-meson.

Constraints on the two-flavor QCD phase diagram from imaginary chemical potential

We review our knowledge of the phase diagram of QCD as a function of temperature, chemical potential and quark masses. The presence of tricritical lines at imaginary chemical potential mu=i pi/3 T, with known scaling behaviour in their vicinity, puts constraints on this phase diagram, especially in the case of two light flavors. We show first results in our project to determine the finite-temperature behaviour in the two-flavour chiral limit.

D-meson decay constants and a check of factorization in non-leptonic B-decays

We compute the vector meson decay constants fD*, fDs* from the simulation of twisted mass QCD on the lattice with Nf = 2 dynamical quarks. When combining their values with the pseudoscalar D(s)-meson decay constants, we were able (i) to show that the heavy quark spin symmetry breaking effects with the charm quark are large, fDs*/fDs = 1.26(3), and (ii) to check the factorization approximation in a few specific B-meson non-leptonic decay modes. Besides our main results, fD* = 278 \pm 13 \pm 10 MeV, and fDs* = 311 \pm 9 MeV, other phenomenologically interesting results of this paper are: fDs*/fD* = 1.16 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.06, fDs*/fD = 1.46 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.06, and fDs/fD* = 0.89 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.03. Finally, we correct the value for B(B0 \rightarrow D+ pi-) quoted by PDG, and find B(B0 \rightarrow D+ pi-) = (7.8 \pm 1.4) \times 10-7. Alternatively, by using the ratios discussed in this paper, we obtain B(B0 \rightarrow D+ pi-) = (8.3 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.8)\times10-7.

We used the twisted mass QCD action with $N_{\rm f}=2$ light dynamical quarks and from the computations made at four lattice spacings we were able to take the continuum limit. Besides the form factors parameterizing the above decays we also computed: (i) the hyperfine splitting and obtained $Δ= 112\pm 4$ MeV, (ii) the annihilation constant $f_{J/ψ}$ which agrees with the one inferred from the measured $Γ(J/ψ\to e^+e^-)$.

QCD Phase Transition in a Strong Magnetic Background

We investigate the properties of the deconfining/chiral restoring transition for two flavor QCD in presence of a uniform background magnetic field. We adopt a standard staggered discretization of the fermion action and a lattice spacing of the order of 0.3 fm. We explore different values of the bare quark mass, corresponding to pion masses in the range 200 - 480 MeV, and magnetic fields up to |e|B ~ 0.75 GeV^2. The deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration temperatures remain compatible with each other and rise very slightly (< 2 % for our largest magnetic field) as a function of the magnetic field. On the other hand, the transition seems to become sharper as the magnetic field increases.

The Roberge-Weiss endpoint in N_f = 2 QCD

We present the results of extensive simulations regarding the critical behavior at the endpoint of the Roberge-Weiss transition for N_f = 2 QCD. We confirm early evidence, presented in arXiv:0909.0254, according to which the Roberge-Weiss endpoint is first order in the limit of large or small quark masses, and second order for intermediate masses. A systematic study of the transition strength as a function of the quark mass in the first order regions, permits us to estimate the tricritical values of the quark mass separating the second order region from the first order ones.

We consider the endpoint of the Roberge-Weiss (RW) first order transition line present for imaginary baryon chemical potentials. We remark that it coincides with the finite size transition relevant in the context of large $N_c$ QCD and study its order in the theory with two degenerate flavors. The RW endpoint is first order in the limit of large and small quark masses, while it weakens for intermediate masses where it is likely in the Ising 3d universality class. Phenomenological implications and further speculations about the QCD phase diagram are discussed.

Thermodynamics of two flavor QCD from imaginary chemical potentials

We study QCD thermodynamics in presence of two independent imaginary chemical potentials coupled to two degenerate flavors of staggered quarks. Analytic continuation is used to determine non-linear susceptibilities, to test the Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model below the zero density critical temperature, Tc, and to determine the average phase factor of the fermion determinant. Deviations from HRG predictions, of the order of a few percent, are clearly visible for temperatures T > 0.95 Tc. The determination of non-linear susceptibilities, using different interpolating functions for analytic continuation, gives consistent results and in agreement with Taylor expansion computations, apart from some systematic effects at or right above Tc. Results for the average phase factor are compared with the predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory; below Tc we are able to distinguish the contribution of different hadron states, which is positive (i.e. tends to mitigate the sign problem) in the case of baryons.
