Gapless chirality liquid with symmetry-protected edge spins

We report that a spin-1/2 tetrahedral Heisenberg chain realizes a gapless symmetry-protected topological (gSPT) phase characterized by the coexistence of the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid criticality due to chirality degrees of freedom and the symmetry-protected edge state due to spin degrees of freedom. This gSPT phase has an interesting feature that no symmetry forbids the trivial spin gap opening but a discrete symmetry, $\mathbb Z_3\times\mathbb Z_2^T$, forbids the unique gapped ground state. In the first part of the paper, we numerically show the coexistence of a critical entanglement entropy and a nontrivially degenerate entanglement spectrum based on the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method.Next, we clarify that chirality degrees of freedom form the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid while spin degrees of freedom form the spin-1 Haldane state based on a degenerate perturbation theory. Last but not least, we discuss the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type ingappability in the gSPT phase, using a local $\mathbb{Z}_3$ rotation. We can thus characterize our gSPT phase as a symmetry-protected critical phase protected by the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ on-site symmetry, the $\mathbb{Z}_2^T$ time-reversal symmetry, the lattice translation symmetry, and the U(1) spin-rotation symmetry.

Field-induced dimer orders in quantum spin chains

Field-induced excitation gaps in quantum spin chains are an interesting phenomenon related to confinements of topological excitations. In this paper, I present a novel type of this phenomenon. I show that an effective magnetic field with a fourfold screw symmetry induces the excitation gap accompanied by dimer orders. The gap and dimer orders induced so exhibit characteristic power-law dependence on the fourfold screw-symmetric field. Moreover, the field-induced dimer order and the field-induced Néel order coexist when the external uniform magnetic field, the fourfold screw-symmetric field, and the twofold staggered field are applied. This situation is in close connection with a compound [Cu(pym)(H$_2$O)$_4$]SiF$_6$ [J. Liu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 057207 (2019)]. In this paper, I discuss a mechanism of field-induced dimer orders by using a density-matrix renormalization group method, a perturbation theory, and quantum field theories.

Electron Spin Resonance in Quasi-One-Dimensional Quantum Antiferromagnets: Relevance of Weak Interchain Interactions

We discuss universal features on the electron spin resonance (ESR) of a temperature-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase in a wide class of weakly coupled $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic spin chains such as spin ladders, spin tubes and three-dimensionally coupled spin chains. We show that the ESR linewidth of various coupled chains increases with lowering temperature while the linewidth of a single spin chain is typically proportional to temperature. This broadening with lowering temperature is attributed to anisotropic interchain interactions and has been indeed observed in several kinds of three-dimensional (3D) magnets of weakly coupled spin chains above the 3D ordering temperature. We demonstrate that our theory can account for anomalous behaviors of the linewidths in an $S=1/2$ four-leg spin tube compound Cu$_2$Cl$_4 \cdot $H$_8$C$_4$SO$_2$ (abbreviated to Sul-Cu$_2$Cl$_4$) and a three-dimensionally coupled $S=1/2$ spin chain compound CuCl$_2\cdot 2$NC$_5$H$_5$.

Negative Coulomb Drag in Coupled Quantum Wires

We present a theory of negative Coulomb drag in capacitively coupled quantum wires based on the commensurability of the electron density and the long-range nature of the Coulomb interaction in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The commensurability introduces a notion of doped particles and holes. We point out that the long-range interaction allows a particle-hole pairing over the wires and that the particle-hole pairing brings about the positive drag of holes, that is, the negative drag.

Dimerizations in spin-$S$ antiferromagnetic chains with three-spin interaction

We discuss spin-$S$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with three-spin interactions, next-nearest-neighbor interactions, and bond alternation. First, we prove rigorously that there exist parameter regions of the exact dimerized ground state in this system. This is a generalization of the Majumdar-Ghosh model to arbitrary $S$. Next, we discuss the ground-state phase diagram of the models by introducing several effective field theories and the universality classes of the transitions are described by the level-$2S$ $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model and the Gaussian model. Finally, we determine the phase diagrams of $S=1$ and $S=3/2$ systems by using exact diagonalization and level spectroscopy.

Spontaneously magnetized Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in frustrated quantum antiferromagnets

We develop a theory of spontaneously magnetized Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (SMTLL) in geometrically frustrated quasi-one-dimensional quantum magnets by taking an $S=1/2$ ferrimagnet on a union-jack lattice as an example. We show that a strong frustration leads to a spontaneous magnetization because of the ferrimagnetic nature of lattice. Due to the ferrimagnetic order, the local magnetization has an incommensurate oscillation with the position. We show that the spontaneously magnetized TLL is smoothly connected to the existence of a Nambu-Goldstone boson in the canted ferrimagnetic phase of a two-dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet.

Electron spin resonance shifts in S=1 antiferromagnetic chains

We discuss electron spin resonance (ESR) shifts in spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with a weak single-ion anisotropy based on several effective field theories, the O(3) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) in the Haldane phase, free fermion theories around the lower and the upper critical fields. In the O(3) NLSM, the single-ion anisotropy corresponds to a composite operator which creates two magnons at the same time and position. Therefore, even inside a parameter range where free magnon approximation is valid, we have to take interactions among magnons into account. Though the O(3) NLSM is only valid in the Haldane phase, an appropriate translation of Faddeev-Zamolodchikov operators of the O(3) NLSM to fermion operators enables one to treat ESR shifts near the lower critical field in a similar manner to discussions in Haldane phase. We present that our theory gives quantitative agreements with recent ESR experimental results on an spin-1 chain compounds NDMAP.

Anomalous behavior of the spin gap of a spin-1/2 two-leg antiferromagnetic ladder with Ising-like rung interactions

Using mainly numerical methods, we investigate the width of the spin gap of a spin-1/2 two-leg ladder described by $\cH= J_\rl \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [ \vS_{j,a} \cdot \vS_{j+1,a} + \vS_{j,b} \cdot \vS_{j+1,b} ] + J_\rr \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [λ(S^x_{j,a} S^x_{j,b} + S^y_{j,a} S^y_{j,b}) + S^z_{j,a} S^z_{j,b}] $, where $S^α_{j,a(b)}$ denotes the $α$-component of the spin-1/2 operator at the $j$-th site of the $a (b)$ chain. We mainly focus on the $J_\rr \gg J_\rl > 0$ and $|λ| \ll 1$ case. The width of the spin gap as a function of $λ$ anomalously increases near $λ= 0$; for instance, for $-0.1 < λ< 0.1$ when $J_{\rm l}/J_{\rm r} = 0.1$. The gap formation mechanism is thought to be different for the $λ< 0$ and $λ> 0$ cases. Since, in usual cases, the width of the gap becomes zero or small at the point where the gap formation mechanism changes, the above gap-increasing phenomenon in the present case is anomalous. We explain the origin of this anomalous phenomenon by use of the degenerate perturbation theory. We also draw the ground-state phase diagram.

Boundary Resonances in S = 1/2 Antiferromagnetic Chains under a Staggered Field

We develop a boundary field theory approach to electron spin resonance in open $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with an effective staggered field. In terms of the sine Gordon effective field theory with boundaries,we point out the existence of boundary bound states of elementary excitations, and modification of the selection rules at the boundary. We argue that several "unknown modes" found in electron spin resonance experiments on KCuGaF$_6$ [I. Umegaki et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 184401 (2009)] and Cu-PM [S. A. Zvyagin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 027201 (2004)] can be understood as boundary resonances introduced by these effects.

Electron spin resonance shift in spin ladder compounds

We analyze the effects of different coupling anisotropies in spin-1/2 ladder on the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) shift. Combining a perturbative expression in the anisotropies with temperature dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group (T-DMRG) computation of the short range correlations, we provide the full temperature and magnetic field evolution of the ESR paramagnetic shift. We show that for well chosen parameters the ESR shift can be in principle used to extract quantitatively the anisotropies and, as an example, discuss the material $\mathrm{(C_5H_{12}N)_2CuBr_4}$ (BPCB).

A semi-classical approach to electron spin resonance in quantum spin systems

We develop a semi-classical approximation to electron spin resonance in quantum spin systems, based on the rotor or non-linear sigma model. The classical time evolution is studied using molec- ular dynamics while random initial conditions are sampled using classical Monte Carlo methods. Although the approximation may be especially powerful in two dimensions, we apply it here to one- dimensional systems of large spin at intermediate temperatures, in the presence of staggered and uniform magnetic fields. We first test the validity of the semi-classical approximation by comparing the magnetization to quantum Monte Carlo results on S = 2 chains. Then we calculate the ESR spectrum, finding broad coexisting paramagnetic and spin wave resonances.

Single-ion anisotropy in Haldane chains and form factor of the O(3) nonlinear sigma model

We consider spin-1 Haldane chains with single-ion anisotropy, which exists in known Haldane chain materials. We develop a perturbation theory in terms of anisotropy, where magnon-magnon interaction is important even in the low temperature limit. The exact two-particle form factor in the O(3) nonlinear sigma model leads to quantitative predictions on several dynamical properties including dynamical structure factor and electron spin resonance frequency shift. These agree very well with numerical results, and with experimental data on the Haldane chain material Ni(C$_5$H$_{14}$N$_2$)$_2$N$_3$(PF$_6$).
