Global Dipole Symmetry, Compact Lifshitz Theory, Tensor Gauge Theory, and Fractons

We study field theories with global dipole symmetries and gauge dipole symmetries. The famous Lifshitz theory is an example of a theory with a global dipole symmetry. We study in detail its 1+1d version with a compact field. When this global symmetry is promoted to a $U(1)$ dipole gauge symmetry, the corresponding gauge field is a tensor gauge field. This theory is known to lead to fractons. In order to resolve various subtleties in the precise meaning of these global or gauge symmetries, we place these 1+1d theories on a lattice and then take the continuum limit. Interestingly, the continuum limit is not unique. Different limits lead to different continuum theories, whose operators, defects, global symmetries, etc. are different. We also consider a lattice gauge theory with a $\mathbb Z_N$ dipole gauge group. Surprisingly, several physical observables, such as the ground state degeneracy and the mobility of defects depend sensitively on the number of sites in the lattice. Our analysis forces us to think carefully about global symmetries that do not act on the standard Hilbert space of the theory, but only on the Hilbert space in the presence of defects. We refer to them as time-like global symmetries and discuss them in detail. These time-like global symmetries allow us to phrase the mobility restrictions of defects (including those of fractons) as a consequence of a global symmetry.

Non-Invertible Duality Defects in 3+1 Dimensions

For any quantum system invariant under gauging a higher-form global symmetry, we construct a non-invertible topological defect by gauging in only half of spacetime. This generalizes the Kramers-Wannier duality line in 1+1 dimensions to higher spacetime dimensions. We focus on the case of a one-form symmetry in 3+1 dimensions, and determine the fusion rule. From a direct analysis of one-form symmetry protected topological phases, we show that the existence of certain kinds of duality defects is intrinsically incompatible with a trivially gapped phase. We give an explicit realization of this duality defect in the free Maxwell theory, both in the continuum and in a modified Villain lattice model. The duality defect is realized by a Chern-Simons coupling between the gauge fields from the two sides. We further construct the duality defect in non-abelian gauge theories and the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ lattice gauge theory.

Non-invertible Global Symmetries in the Standard Model

We identify infinitely many non-invertible generalized global symmetries in QED and QCD for the real world in the massless limit. In QED, while there is no conserved Noether current for the $U(1)_\text{A}$ axial symmetry because of the ABJ anomaly, for every rational angle $2πp/N$, we construct a conserved and gauge-invariant topological symmetry operator. Intuitively, it is a composition of the axial rotation and a fractional quantum Hall state coupled to the electromagnetic $U(1)$ gauge field. These conserved symmetry operators do not obey a group multiplication law, but a non-invertible fusion algebra over TQFT coefficients. They act invertibly on all local operators as axial rotations, but non-invertibly on the 't Hooft lines. These non-invertible symmetries lead to selection rules, which are consistent with the scattering amplitudes in QED. We further generalize our construction to QCD, and show that the coupling $π^0 F\wedge F$ in the effective pion Lagrangian is necessary to match these non-invertible symmetries in the UV. Therefore, the conventional argument for the neutral pion decay using the ABJ anomaly is now rephrased as a matching condition of a generalized global symmetry.

Snowmass White Paper: Effective Field Theories for Condensed Matter Systems

We review recent progress and a number of future directions for applications of effective field theory methods to condensed matter systems broadly defined. Our emphasis is on areas that have allowed a fertile exchange of ideas between high energy physics and many-body theory. We discuss developments in the effective field theory of spontaneous symmetry breaking, of hydrodynamics and non-equilibrium dynamics more generally, fracton phases of matter, and dualities between 2+1 dimensional field theories. We furthermore discuss the application of effective field theory to non-Fermi liquids, the dynamics of entanglement entropy and to condensed matter aspects of cosmology.

Snowmass White Paper: Generalized Symmetries in Quantum Field Theory and Beyond

Symmetry plays a central role in quantum field theory. Recent developments include symmetries that act on defects and other subsystems, and symmetries that are categorical rather than group-like. These generalized notions of symmetry allow for new kinds of anomalies that constrain dynamics. We review some transformative instances of these novel aspects of symmetry in quantum field theory, and give a broad-brush overview of recent applications.

Anomaly Inflow for Subsystem Symmetries

We study 't Hooft anomalies and the related anomaly inflow for subsystem global symmetries. These symmetries and anomalies arise in a number of exotic systems, including models with fracton order such as the X-cube model. As is the case for ordinary global symmetries, anomalies for subsystem symmetries can be canceled by anomaly inflow from a bulk theory in one higher dimension; the corresponding bulk is therefore a non-trivial subsystem symmetry protected topological (SSPT) phase. We demonstrate these phenomena in several examples with continuous and discrete subsystem global symmetries, as well as time-reversal symmetry. For each example we describe the boundary anomaly, and present classical continuum actions for the corresponding bulk SSPT phases, which describe the response of background gauge fields associated with the subsystem symmetries. Interestingly, we show that the anomaly does not uniquely specify the bulk SSPT phase. In general, the latter may also depend on how the symmetry and the associated foliation structure on the boundary are extended into the bulk.

Exotic Symmetries, Duality, and Fractons in 2+1-Dimensional Quantum Field Theory

We discuss nonstandard continuum quantum field theories in 2+1 dimensions. They exhibit exotic global symmetries, a subtle spectrum of charged excitations, and dualities similar to dualities of systems in 1+1 dimensions. These continuum models represent the low-energy limits of certain known lattice systems. One key aspect of these continuum field theories is the important role played by discontinuous field configurations. In two companion papers, we will present 3+1-dimensional versions of these systems. In particular, we will discuss continuum quantum field theories of some models of fractons.

The low-energy limit of some exotic lattice theories and UV/IR mixing

We continue our exploration of exotic, gapless lattice and continuum field theories with subsystem global symmetries. In an earlier paper, we presented free lattice models enjoying all the global symmetries (except continuous translations), dualities, and anomalies of the continuum theories. Here, we study in detail the relation between the lattice models and the corresponding continuum theories. We do that by analyzing the spectrum of the theories and several correlation functions. These lead us to uncover interesting subtleties in the way the continuum limit can be taken. In particular, in some cases, the infinite volume limit and the continuum limit do not commute. This signals a surprising UV/IR mixing, i.e., long distance sensitivity to short distance details.

Anomalies and Bounds on Charged Operators

We study the implications of 't Hooft anomaly (i.e. obstruction to gauging) on conformal field theory, focusing on the case when the global symmetry is $\mathbb{Z_2}$. Using the modular bootstrap, universal bounds on (1+1)-dimensional bosonic conformal field theories with an internal $\mathbb{Z_2}$ global symmetry are derived. The bootstrap bounds depend dramatically on the 't Hooft anomaly. In particular, there is a universal upper bound on the lightest $\mathbb{Z_2}$ odd operator if the symmetry is anomalous, but there is no bound if the symmetry is non-anomalous. In the non-anomalous case, we find that the lightest $\mathbb{Z_2}$ odd state and the defect ground state cannot both be arbitrarily heavy. We also consider theories with a $U(1)$ global symmetry, and comment that there is no bound on the lightest $U(1)$ charged operator if the symmetry is non-anomalous.

Bounds on Triangle Anomalies in (3+1)d

How many charged degrees of freedom are necessary to accommodate a certain amount of 't Hooft anomaly? Using the conformal bootstrap for the four-point function of flavor current multiplets, we show that in all (3+1)d superconformal field theories the 't Hooft anomaly of a continuous flavor symmetry is bounded from above by the 3/2 power of the current two-point function coefficient, which can be thought of as a measure for the amount of charged degrees of freedom. We check our bounds against free fields and SQCD in the conformal window.

Exotic $\mathbb{Z}_N$ Symmetries, Duality, and Fractons in 3+1-Dimensional Quantum Field Theory

Following our earlier analyses of nonstandard continuum quantum field theories, we study here gapped systems in 3+1 dimensions, which exhibit fractonic behavior. In particular, we present three dual field theory descriptions of the low-energy physics of the X-cube model. A key aspect of our constructions is the use of discontinuous fields in the continuum field theory. Spacetime is continuous, but the fields are not.

Topological Transition on the Conformal Manifold

Despite great successes in the study of gapped phases, a comprehensive understanding of the gapless phases and their transitions is still under developments. In this paper, we study a general phenomenon in the space of (1+1)$d$ critical phases with fermionic degrees of freedom described by a continuous family of conformal field theories (CFT), a.k.a. the conformal manifold. Along a one-dimensional locus on the conformal manifold, there can be a transition point, across which the fermionic CFTs on the two sides differ by stacking an invertible fermionic topological order (IFTO), point-by-point along the locus. At every point on the conformal manifold, the order and disorder operators have power-law two-point functions, but their critical exponents cross over with each other at the transition point, where stacking the IFTO leaves the fermionic CFT unchanged. We call this continuous transition on the fermionic conformal manifold a topological transition. By gauging the fermion parity, the IFTO stacking becomes a Kramers-Wannier duality between the corresponding bosonic CFTs. Both the IFTO stacking and the Kramers-Wannier duality are induced by the electromagnetic duality of the (2+1)$d$ $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order. We provide several examples of topological transitions, including the familiar Luttinger model of spinless fermions (i.e. the $c=1$ massless Dirac fermion with the Thirring interaction), and a new class of $c=2$ examples describing $U(1)\times SU(2)$-protected gapless phases.

Decorated $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ Symmetry Defects and Their Time-Reversal Anomalies

We discuss an isomorphism between the possible anomalies of $(d+1)$-dimensional quantum field theories with $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ unitary global symmetry, and those of $d$-dimensional quantum field theories with time-reversal symmetry $\mathsf{T}$. This correspondence is an instance of symmetry defect decoration. The worldvolume of a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry defect is naturally invariant under $\mathsf{T},$ and bulk $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ anomalies descend to $\mathsf{T}$ anomalies on these defects. We illustrate this correspondence in detail for $(1+1)d$ bosonic systems where the bulk $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ anomaly leads to a Kramers degeneracy in the symmetry defect Hilbert space, and exhibit examples. We also discuss $(1+1)d$ fermion systems protected by $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ global symmetry where interactions lead to a $\mathbb{Z}_{8}$ classification of anomalies. Under the correspondence, this is directly related to the $\mathbb{Z}_{8}$ classification of $(0+1)d$ fermions protected by $\mathsf{T}$. Finally, we consider $(3+1)d$ bosonic systems with $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry where the possible anomalies are classified by $\mathbb{Z}_{2}\times \mathbb{Z}_{2}$. We construct topological field theories realizing these anomalies and show that their associated symmetry defects support anyons that can be either fermions or Kramers doublets.

Lorentz Symmetry Fractionalization and Dualities in (2+1)d

We discuss symmetry fractionalization of the Lorentz group in (2+1)$d$ non-spin quantum field theory (QFT), and its implications for dualities. We prove that two inequivalent non-spin QFTs are dual as spin QFTs if and only if they are related by a Lorentz symmetry fractionalization with respect to an anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_2$ one-form symmetry. Moreover, if the framing anomalies of two non-spin QFTs differ by a multiple of 8, then they are dual as spin QFTs if and only if they are also dual as non-spin QFTs. Applications to summing over the spin structures, time-reversal symmetry, and level/rank dualities are explored. The Lorentz symmetry fractionalization naturally arises in Chern-Simons matter dualities that obey certain spin/charge relations, and is instrumental for the dualities to hold when viewed as non-spin theories.

An Index Formula for Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

We derive a localization formula for the refined index of gauged quantum mechanics with four supercharges. Our answer takes the form of a residue integral on the complexified Cartan subalgebra of the gauge group. The formula captures the dependence of the index on Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters and the presence of a generic superpotential. The residue formula provides an efficient method for computing cohomology of quiver moduli spaces. Our result has broad applications to the counting of BPS states in four-dimensional N=2 systems. In that context, the wall-crossing phenomenon appears as discontinuities in the value of the residue integral as the integration contour is varied. We present several examples illustrating the various aspects of the index formula.

Asymptotics of Ground State Degeneracies in Quiver Quantum Mechanics

We study the growth of the ground state degeneracy in the Kronecker model of quiver quantum mechanics. This is the simplest quiver with two gauge groups and bifundamental matter fields, and appears universally in the context of BPS state counting in four-dimensional N=2 systems. For large ranks, the ground state degeneracy is exponential with slope a modular function that we are able to compute at integral values of its argument. We also observe that the exponential of the slope is an algebraic number and determine its associated algebraic equation explicitly in several examples. The speed of growth of the degeneracies, together with various physical features of the bound states, suggests a dual string interpretation.

Counting Trees in Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

We study the supersymmetric ground states of the Kronecker model of quiver quantum mechanics. This is the simplest quiver with two gauge groups and bifundamental matter fields, and appears universally in four-dimensional N=2 systems. The ground state degeneracy may be written as a multi-dimensional contour integral, and the enumeration of poles can be simply phrased as counting bipartite trees. We solve this combinatorics problem, thereby obtaining exact formulas for the degeneracies of an infinite class of models. We also develop an algorithm to compute the angular momentum of the ground states, and present explicit expressions for the refined indices of theories where one rank is small.

Interpolating the Coulomb Phase of Little String Theory

We study up to 8-derivative terms in the Coulomb branch effective action of (1,1) little string theory, by collecting results of 4-gluon scattering amplitudes from both perturbative 6D super-Yang-Mills theory up to 4-loop order, and tree-level double scaled little string theory (DSLST). In previous work we have matched the 6-derivative term from the 6D gauge theory to DSLST, indicating that this term is protected on the entire Coulomb branch. The 8-derivative term, on the other hand, is unprotected. In this paper we compute the 8-derivative term by interpolating from the two limits, near the origin and near the infinity on the Coulomb branch, numerically from SU(k) SYM and DSLST respectively, for k=2,3,4,5. We discuss the implication of this result on the UV completion of 6D SYM as well as the strong coupling completion of DSLST. We also comment on analogous interpolating functions in the Coulomb phase of circle-compactified (2,0) little string theory.

M-theory on Elliptic Calabi-Yau Threefolds and 6d Anomalies

We consider the 8-supercharge 5d su(N) gauge theories from M-theory compactified on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. By matching the triple intersection numbers in the elliptic Calabi-Yau with the 5d Chern-Simons levels, we determine the charged matter contents for these theories. We show that all these 5d theories can be lifted to 6d N = (1, 0) theories while satisfying the anomaly cancellation equations. This suggests that the 5d theories obtained from M-theory compactified on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds have a natural 12d description, which as we know is F-theory. Furthermore, we compute the Euler characteristics of the elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds.

N=4 Superconformal Bootstrap of the K3 CFT

We study two-dimensional (4,4) superconformal field theories of central charge c=6, corresponding to nonlinear sigma models on K3 surfaces, using the superconformal bootstrap. This is made possible through a surprising relation between the BPS N=4 superconformal blocks with c=6 and bosonic Virasoro conformal blocks with c=28, and an exact result on the moduli dependence of a certain integrated BPS 4-point function. Nontrivial bounds on the non-BPS spectrum in the K3 CFT are obtained as functions of the CFT moduli, that interpolate between the free orbifold points and singular CFT points. We observe directly from the CFT perspective the signature of a continuous spectrum above a gap at the singular moduli, and find numerically an upper bound on this gap that is saturated by the $A_1$ N=4 cigar CFT. We also derive an analytic upper bound on the first nonzero eigenvalue of the scalar Laplacian on K3 in the large volume regime, that depends on the K3 moduli data. As two byproducts, we find an exact equivalence between a class of BPS N=2 superconformal blocks and Virasoro conformal blocks in two dimensions, and an upper bound on the four-point functions of operators of sufficiently low scaling dimension in three and four dimensional CFTs.

On Higher Derivative Couplings in Theories with Sixteen Supersymmetries

We give simple arguments for new non-renormalization theorems on higher derivative couplings of gauge theories to supergravity, with sixteen supersymmetries, by considerations of brane-bulk superamplitudes. This leads to some exact results on the effective coupling of D3-branes in type IIB string theory. We also derive exact results on higher dimensional operators in the torus compactification of the six dimensional (0, 2) superconformal theory.

Schur Indices, BPS Particles, and Argyres-Douglas Theories

We conjecture a precise relationship between the Schur limit of the superconformal index of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ field theories, which counts local operators, and the spectrum of BPS particles on the Coulomb branch. We verify this conjecture for the special case of free field theories, $\mathcal{N}=2$ QED, and $SU(2)$ gauge theory coupled to fundamental matter. Assuming the validity of our proposal, we compute the Schur index of all Argyres-Douglas theories. Our answers match expectations from the connection of Schur operators with two-dimensional chiral algebras. Based on our results we propose that the chiral algebra of the generalized Argyres-Douglas theory $(A_{k-1},A_{N-1})$ with $k$ and $N$ coprime, is the vacuum sector of the $(k,k+N)$ $W_{k}$ minimal model, and that the Schur index is the associated vacuum character.

Supersymmetry Constraints and String Theory on K3

We study supervertices in six dimensional (2,0) supergravity theories, and derive supersymmetry non-renormalization conditions on the 4- and 6-derivative four-point couplings of tensor multiplets. As an application, we obtain exact non-perturbative results of such effective couplings in type IIB string theory compactified on K3 surface, extending previous work on type II/heterotic duality. The weak coupling limit thereof, in particular, gives certain integrated four-point functions of half-BPS operators in the nonlinear sigma model on K3 surface, that depend nontrivially on the moduli, and capture worldsheet instanton contributions.

Little String Amplitudes (and the Unreasonable Effectiveness of 6D SYM)

We study tree level scattering amplitudes of four massless states in the double scaled little string theory, and compare them to perturbative loop amplitudes in six-dimensional super-Yang-Mills theory. The little string amplitudes are computed from correlators in the cigar coset CFT and in N=2 minimal models. The results are expressed in terms of integrals of conformal blocks and evaluated numerically in the alpha' expansion. We find striking agreements with up to 2-loop scattering amplitudes of massless gluons in 6D SU(k) SYM at a Z_k invariant point on the Coulomb branch. We comment on the issue of UV divergence at higher loop orders in the gauge theory and discuss the implication of our results.

Singularities and Gauge Theory Phases

Motivated by M-theory compactification on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds, we present a correspondence between networks of small resolutions for singular elliptic fibrations and Coulomb branches of five-dimensional N=1 gauge theories. While resolutions correspond to subchambers of the Coulomb branch, partial resolutions correspond to higher codimension loci at which the Coulomb branch intersects the Coulomb-Higgs branches. Flops between different resolutions are identified with reflections on the Coulomb branch. Physics aside, this correspondence provides an interesting link between elliptic fibrations and representation theory.

A Low Temperature Expansion for Matrix Quantum Mechanics

We analyze solutions to loop-truncated Schwinger-Dyson equations in massless N=2 and N=4 Wess-Zumino matrix quantum mechanics at finite temperature, where conventional perturbation theory breaks down due to IR divergences. We find a rather intricate low temperature expansion that involves fractional power scaling in the temperature, based on a consistent "soft collinear" approximation. We conjecture that at least in the N=4 matrix quantum mechanics, such scaling behavior holds to all perturbative orders in the 1/N expansion. We discuss some preliminary results in analyzing the gauged supersymmetric quantum mechanics using Schwinger-Dyson equations, and comment on the connection to metastable microstates of black holes in the holographic dual of BFSS matrix quantum mechanics.

A Naturally Minute Quantum Correction to the Cosmological Constant Descended from the Hierarchy

We demonstrate that an extremely small but positive quantum correction, or the Casimir energy, to the cosmological constant can arise from a massive bulk fermion field in the Randall-Sundrum model. Specifically, a cosmological constant doubly descended from the Planck-electroweak hierarchy and as minute as the observed dark energy scale can be naturally achieved without fine-tuning of the bulk fermion mass. To ensure the stabilization of the system, we discuss two stabilization mechanisms under this setup. It is found that the Goldberger-Wise mechanism can be successfully introduced in the presence of a massive bulk fermion, without spoiling the smallness of the quantum correction.

Stress-Energy Tensor Induced by Bulk Dirac Spinor in Randall-Sundrum Model

Motivated by the possible extension into a supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum (RS) model, we investigate the properties of the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the stress-energy tensor for a quantized bulk Dirac spinor field in the RS geometry and compare it with that for a real scalar field. This is carried out via the Green function method based on first principles without invoking the degeneracy factor, whose validity in a warp geometry is a priori unassured. In addition, we investigate the local behavior of the Casimir energy near the two branes. One salient feature we found is that the surface divergences near the two branes have opposite signs. We argue that this is a generic feature of the fermionic Casimir energy density due to its parity transformation in the fifth dimension. Furthermore, we investigate the self-consistency of the RS metric under the quantum correction due to the stress-energy tensor. It is shown that the VEV of the stress-energy tensor and the classical one become comparable near the visible brane if k ~ M ~ M_Pl (the requirement of no hierarchy problem), where k is the curvature of the RS warped geometry and M the 5-dimensional Planck mass. In that case the self-consistency of RS model that includes bulk fields is in doubt. If, however, k <~ M, then an approximate self-consistency of the RS-type metric may still be satisfied.
