Characterizing Random-singlet State in Two-dimensional Frustrated Quantum Magnets and Implications for the Double Perovskite Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O$_6$

Motivated by experimental observation of the non-magnetic phase in the compounds with frustration and disorder, we study the ground state of the spin-$1/2$ square-lattice Heisenberg model with randomly distributed nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ couplings. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation on cylinder system with circumference up to $10$ lattice sites, we identify a disordered phase between the Néel and stripe magnetic phase with growing $J_2 / J_1$ in the presence of strong bond randomness. The vanished spin-freezing parameter indicates the absence of spin glass order. The large-scale DMRG results unveil the size-scaling behaviors of the spin-freezing parameter, the power-law decay of the average spin correlation, and the exponential decay of the typical spin correlation, which all agree with the corresponding behavior in the one-dimensional random singlet (RS) state and characterize the RS nature of this disordered phase. The DMRG simulation also provides insights and opportunities for characterizing a class of non-magnetic states in two-dimensional frustrated magnets with disorder. We also compare with existing experiments and suggest more measurements for understanding the spin-liquid-like behaviors in the double perovskite Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O$_6$.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_χ$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Gapless quantum spin liquid and global phase diagram of the spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ square antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model

The nature of the zero-temperature phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice has been debated in the past three decades, which may hold the key to understand high temperature superconductivity. By using the state-of-the-art tensor network method, specifically, the finite projected entangled pair state (PEPS) algorithm, to simulate the global phase diagram the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model up to $24\times 24$ sites, we provide very solid evidences to show that the nature of the intermediate nonmagnetic phase is a gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL), whose spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations both decay with a power law behavior. There also exists a valence-bond solid (VBS) phase in a very narrow region $0.56\lesssim J_2/J_1\leq0.61$ before the system enters the well known collinear antiferromagnetic phase. The physical nature of the discovered gapless QSL and potential experimental implications are also addressed. We stress that we make the first detailed comparison between the results of PEPS and the well-established density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method through one-to-one direct benchmark for small system sizes, and thus give rise to a very solid PEPS calculation beyond DMRG. Our numerical evidences explicitly demonstrate the huge power of PEPS for precisely capturing long-range physcis for highly frustrated systems, and also demonstrate the finite PEPS method is a very powerful approach to study strongly corrleated quantum many-body problems.

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of Nematicity in Two Dimensions: Application to a Spin-$1$ Bilinear-Biquadratic Model on the Square Lattice

Nematic order is an exotic property observed in several strongly correlated systems, such as the iron-based superconductors. Using large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) techniques, we study at zero-temperature the nematic spin liquid that competes with spin dipolar and quadrupolar orders. We use these nematic orders to characterize different quantum phases and quantum phase transitions. More specifically, we study a spin-$1$ bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice with couplings beyond nearest neighbors. We focus on parameter regions around the highly symmetric $SU(3)$ point where the bilinear and biquadratic interactions are equal. With growing further-neighbor biquadratic interactions, we identify different spin dipolar and quadrupolar orders. We find that the DMRG results on cylindrical geometries correctly detect nematicity in different quantum states and accurately characterize the quantum phase transitions among them. Therefore, spin-driven nematicity -- here defined as the spontaneous breaking of the lattice invariance under a 90$^o$ rotation -- is an order parameter which can be studied directly in DMRG calculations in two dimensions in different quantum states.

Quantum Transitions of Nematic Phases in a Spin-$1$ Bilinear-Biquadratic Model and Their Implications for FeSe

Since its discovery, iron-based superconductivity has been known to develop near an antiferromagnetic order, but this paradigm fails in the iron chalcogenide FeSe, whose single-layer version holds the record for the highest superconducting transition temperature in the iron-based superconductors. The striking puzzle that FeSe displays nematic order (spontaneously broken lattice rotational symmetry) while being non-magnetic, has led to several competing proposals for its origin in terms of either the $3d$-electron's orbital degrees of freedom or spin physics in the form of frustrated magnetism. Here we argue that the phase diagram of FeSe under pressure could be qualitatively described by a quantum spin model with highly frustrated interactions. We implement both the site-factorized wave-function analysis and the large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) in cylinders to study the spin-$1$ bilinear-biquadratic model on the square lattice, and identify quantum transitions from the well-known $(π,0)$ antiferromagnetic state to an exotic $(π,0)$ antiferroquadrupolar order, either directly or through a $(π/2,π)$ antiferromagnetic state. These many phases, while distinct, are all nematic. We also discuss our theoretical ground-state phase diagram for the understanding of the experimental low-temperature phase diagram obtained by the NMR [P. S. Wang {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 237001 (2016)] and X-ray scattering [K. Kothapalli {\it et al.}, Nature Communications 7, 12728 (2016)] measurements in pressurized FeSe. Our results suggest that superconductivity in a wide range of iron-based materials has a common origin in the antiferromagnetic correlations of strongly correlated electrons.

Reentrance of Topological Phase in Spin-1 Frustrated Heisenberg Chain

For the Haldane phase, the magnetic field usually tends to break the symmetry and drives the system into a topologically trivial phase. Here, we report a novel reentrance of the Haldane phase at zero temperature in the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on sawtooth chain. A partial Haldane phase is induced by the magnetic field, which is the combination of the Haldane state in one sublattice and a ferromagnetically ordered state in the other sublattice. Such a partial topological order is a result of the zero-temperature entropy due to quantum fluctuations caused by geometrical frustration.

Emergent quasi-one-dimensionality in a kagomé magnet: A simple route to complexity

We study the ground state phase diagram of the quantum spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the kagomé lattice with first- ($J_1 < 0$), second- ($J_2 < 0$), and third-neighbor interactions ($J_d > 0$) by means of analytical low-energy field theory and numerical density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies. The results offer a consistent picture of the $J_d$-dominant regime in terms of three sets of spin chains weakly coupled by the ferromagnetic inter-chain interactions $J_{1,2}$. When either $J_1$ or $J_2$ is dominant, the model is found to support one of two cuboctohedral phases, cuboc1 and cuboc2. These cuboc states host non-coplanar long-ranged magnetic order and possess finite scalar spin chirality. However, in the compensated regime $J_1 \simeq J_2$, a valence bond crystal phase emerges between the two cuboc phases. We find excellent agreement between an analytical theory based on coupled spin chains and unbiased DMRG calculations, including at a very detailed level of comparison of the structure of the valence bond crystal state. To our knowledge, this is the first such comprehensive understanding of a highly frustrated two-dimensional (2d) quantum antiferromagnet. We find no evidence of either the one-dimensional (1d) gapless spin liquid or the chiral spin liquids, which were previously suggested by parton mean field theories.

Frustrated magnetism and bicollinear antiferromagnetic order in FeTe

Iron chalcogenides display a rich variety of electronic orders in their phase diagram. A particularly enigmatic case is FeTe, a metal which possesses co-existing hole and electron Fermi surfaces as in the iron pnictides but has a distinct ($π$/2,$π/2$) bicollinear antiferromagnetic order in the Fe square lattice. While local-moment physics has been recognized as essential for understanding the electronic order, it has been a long-standing challenge to understand how the bicollinear antiferromagnetic ground state emerges in a proper quantum spin model. We show here that a bilinear-biquadratic spin-$1$ model on a square lattice with nonzero ring-exchange interactions exhibits the bicollinear antiferromagnetic order over an extended parameter space in its phase diagram. Our work shows that frustrated magnetism in the quantum spin model provides a unified description of the electronic orders in the iron chalcogenides and iron pnictides.

Variational Monte Carlo study of chiral spin liquid in quantum antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

By using Gutzwiller projected fermionic wave functions and variational Monte Carlo technique, we study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model with the first-neighbor ($J_1$), second-neighbor ($J_2$), and additional scalar chiral interaction $J_χ{\bf S}_i \cdot ({\bf S}_j \times {\bf S}_k)$ on the triangular lattice. In the non-magnetic phase of the $J_1-J_2$ triangular model with $0.08 \lesssim J_2/J_1 \lesssim 0.16$, recent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies [Zhu and White, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 041105 (2015); Hu, Gong, Zhu, and Sheng, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 140403 (2015)] find a possible gapped spin liquid with the signal of a competition between a chiral and a $Z_2$ spin liquid. Motivated by the DMRG results, we consider the chiral interaction $J_χ{\bf S}_i \cdot ({\bf S}_j \times {\bf S}_k)$ as a pertubation for this non-magnetic phase. We find that with growing $J_χ$, the gapless U(1) Dirac spin liquid, which has the best variational energy for $J_χ=0$, exhibits the energy instability towards a gapped spin liquid with non-trivial magnetic fluxes and nonzero chiral order. We calculate topological Chern number and ground-state degeneracy, both of which identify this flux state as the chiral spin liquid with fractionalized Chern number $C=1/2$ and two-fold topological degeneracy. Our results indicate a positive direction to stabilize a chiral spin liquid near the non-magnetic phase of the $J_1-J_2$ triangular model.

Competing Spin Liquid States in the Spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg Model On Triangular Lattice

We study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with the antiferromagnetic first ($J_1$) and second ($J_2$) nearest-neighbor interactions using density matrix renormalization group. By studying the spin correlation function, we find a $120^{\circ}$ magnetic order phase for $J_2 \lesssim 0.07 J_1$ and a stripe antiferromagnetic phase for $J_2 \gtrsim 0.15 J_1$. Between these two phases, we identify a spin liquid region characterized by the exponential decaying spin and dimer correlations, as well as the large spin singlet and triplet excitation gaps on finite-size systems. We find two near degenerating ground states with distinct properties in two sectors, which indicates more than one spin liquid candidates in this region. While the sector with spinon is found to respect the time reversal symmetry, the even sector without a spinon breaks such a symmetry for finite-size systems. Furthermore, we detect the signature of the fractionalization by following the evolution of different ground states with inserting spin flux into the cylinder system. Moreover, by tuning the anisotropic bond coupling, we explore the nature of the spin liquid phase and find the optimal parameter region for the gapped $Z_2$ spin liquid.

Quantum phase diagram of the spin-$1$ $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice

Strongly correlated systems with geometric frustrations can host the emergent phases of matter with unconventional properties. Here, we study the spin $S = 1$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with the antiferromagnetic first- ($J_1$) and second-neighbor ($J_2$) interactions ($0.0 \leq J_2/J_1 \leq 0.5$) by means of density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). In the parameter regime $J_2/J_1 \lesssim 0.27$, the system sustains a Néel antiferromagnetic phase. At the large $J_2$ side $J_2/J_1 \gtrsim 0.32$, a stripe antiferromagnetic phase is found. Between the two magnetic ordered phases $0.27 \lesssim J_2/J_1 \lesssim 0.32$, we find a \textit{non-magnetic} intermediate region with a plaquette valence-bond order. Although our calculations are limited within $6$ unit-cell width on cylinder, we present evidence that this plaquette state could be a strong candidate for this non-magnetic region in the thermodynamic limit. We also briefly discuss the nature of the quantum phase transitions in the system. We gain further insight of the non-magnetic phases in the spin-$1$ system by comparing its phase diagram with the spin-$1/2$ system.

Variational Monte Carlo study of gapless spin liquid in the spin-$1/2$ XXZ antiferromagnetic model on the kagome lattice

By using the variational Monte Carlo technique, we study the spin-$1/2$ XXZ antiferromagnetic model (with easy-plane anisotropy) on the kagome lattice. A class of Gutzwiller projected fermionic states with a spin Jastrow factor is considered to describe either spin liquids (with $U(1)$ or $Z_2$ symmetry) or magnetically ordered phases (with ${\bf q}=(0,0)$ or ${\bf q}=(4π/3,0)$). We find that the magnetic states are not stable in the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, there is no energy gain to break the gauge symmetry from $U(1)$ to $Z_2$ within the spin-liquid states, as previously found in the Heisenberg model. The best variational wave function is therefore the $U(1)$ Dirac state, supplemented by the spin Jastrow factor. Furthermore, a vanishing $S=2$ spin gap is obtained at the variational level, in the whole regime from the $XY$ to the Heisenberg model.

Emergent Chiral Spin Liquid: Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in a Kagome Heisenberg Model

The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) realized in two-dimensional electron systems under a magnetic field is one of the most remarkable discoveries in condensed matter physics. Interestingly, it has been proposed that FQHE can also emerge in time-reversal invariant spin systems, known as the chiral spin liquid (CSL) characterized by the topological order and the emerging of the fractionalized quasiparticles. A CSL can naturally lead to the exotic superconductivity originating from the condense of anyonic quasiparticles. Although CSL was highly sought after for more than twenty years, it had never been found in a spin isotropic Heisenberg model or related materials. By developing a density-matrix renormalization group based method for adiabatically inserting flux, we discover a FQHE in a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ isotropic kagome Heisenberg model. We identify this FQHE state as the long-sought CSL with a uniform chiral order spontaneously breaking time reversal symmetry, which is uniquely characterized by the half-integer quantized topological Chern number protected by a robust excitation gap. The CSL is found to be at the neighbor of the previously identified $Z_2$ spin liquid, which may lead to an exotic quantum phase transition between two gapped topological spin liquids.

Global Phase Diagram of Competing Ordered and Quantum Spin Liquid Phases on the Kagomé Lattice

We study the quantum phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the kagomé lattice with first-, second-, and third-neighbor interactions $J_1$, $J_2$, and $J_3$ by means of density matrix renormalization group. For small $J_2$ and $J_3$, this model sustains a time-reversal invariant quantum spin liquid phase. With increasing $J_2$ and $J_3$, we find in addition a $q=(0,0)$ Néel phase, a chiral spin liquid phase, a valence-bond crystal phase, and a complex non-coplanar magnetically ordered state with spins forming the vertices of a cuboctahedron known as a cuboc1 phase. Both the chiral spin liquid and cuboc1 phase break time reversal symmetry in the sense of spontaneous scalar spin chirality. We show that the chiralities in the chiral spin liquid and cuboc1 are distinct, and that these two states are separated by a strong first order phase transition. The transitions from the chiral spin liquid to both the $q=(0,0)$ phase and to time-reversal symmetric spin liquid, however, are consistent with continuous quantum phase transitions.

Plaquette Ordered Phase and Quantum Phase Diagram in the Spin-1/2 J1-J2 Square Heisenberg Model

We study the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice with first- and second-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions J1 and J2, which possesses a nonmagnetic region that has been debated for many years and might realize the interesting Z2 spin liquid. We use the density matrix renormalization group approach with explicit implementation of SU(2) spin rotation symmetry and study the model accurately on open cylinders with different boundary conditions. With increasing J2, we find a Neel phase, a plaquette valence-bond (PVB) phase with a finite spin gap, and a possible spin liquid in a small region of J2 between these two phases. From the finite-size scaling of the magnetic order parameter, we estimate that the Neel order vanishes at J2/J1~0.44. For 0.5<J2/J1<0.61, we find dimer correlations and PVB textures whose decay lengths grow strongly with increasing system width, consistent with a long-range PVB order in the two-dimensional limit. The dimer-dimer correlations reveal the s-wave character of the PVB order. For 0.44<J2/J1<0.5, spin order, dimer order, and spin gap are small on finite-size systems and appear to scale to zero with increasing system width, which is consistent with a possible gapless SL or a near-critical behavior. We compare and contrast our results with earlier numerical studies.

Phase diagram of spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice

We use density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm to study the phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice with first (J1) and second (J2) neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions, where a Z2 spin liquid region has been proposed. By implementing SU(2) symmetry in the DMRG code, we are able to obtain accurate results for long cylinders with width slightly over 15 lattice spacings and torus up to the size N=2*6*6. With increasing J2, we find a Neel phase with vanishing spin gap and a plaquette valence-bond (PVB) phase with non-zero spin gap. By extrapolating the square of the staggered magnetic moment ms^2 on finite-size cylinders to thermodynamic limit, we find the Neel order vanishing at J2/J1~0.22. For 0.25<J2/J1<0.35, we find a possible PVB order, which shows a fast growing PVB decay length with increasing system width. For 0.22<J2/J1<0.25, both spin and dimer orders are weak for all systems we have studied, which is consistent with a possible spin liquid phase or a deconfined quantum critical point. We present calculations of the topological entanglement entropy, compare the DMRG results with the variational Monte Carlo, and discuss possible scenarios in the thermodynamic limit for this region.

Low-energy effective theory and two distinct critical phases in a spin-1/2 frustrated three-leg spin tube

Motivated by the crystal structures of [(CuCl2tachH)3Cl]Cl2 and Ca3Co2O6, we develop a low-energy effective theory using the bosonization technique for a spin-1/2 frustrated three-leg spin tube with trigonal prism units in two limit cases. The features obtained with the effective theory are numerically elucidated by the density matrix renormalization group method. Three different quantum phases in the ground state of the system, say, one gapped dimerized phase and two distinct gapless phases, are identified, where the two gapless phases are found to have the conformal central charge c=1 and 3/2, respectively. Spin gaps, spin and dimer correlation functions, and the entanglement entropy are obtained. In particular, it is disclosed that the critical phase with c=3/2 is the consequence of spin frustrations, which might belong to the SU(2)k=2 Wess-Zumino-Witten-Novikov universality class, and is induced by the twist term in the bosonized Hamiltonian density.

Linearized Tensor Renormalization Group Algorithm for Thermodynamics of Quantum Lattice Models

A linearized tensor renormalization group (LTRG) algorithm is proposed to calculate the thermodynamic properties of one-dimensional quantum lattice models, that is incorporated with the infinite time-evolving block decimation technique, and allows for treating directly the two-dimensional transfer-matrix tensor network. To illustrate its feasibility, the thermodynamic quantities of the quantum XY spin chain are calculated accurately by the LTRG, and the precision is shown to be comparable with (even better than) the transfer matrix renormalization group (TMRG) method. Unlike the TMRG scheme that can only deal with the infinite chains, the present LTRG algorithm could treat both finite and infinite systems, and may be readily extended to boson and fermion quantum lattice models.

Magnetism and thermodynamics of spin-(1/2,1) decorated Heisenberg chain with spin-1 pendants

The magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a new ferrimagnetic decorated spin-(1/2,1) Heisenberg chain with spin-1 pendant spins are investigated for three cases: (A) J1,J2>0; (B) J1>0, J2<0; and (C) J1<0, J2>0, where J1 and J2 are the exchange couplings between spins in the chain and along the rung, respectively. The low-lying and magnetic properties are explored jointly by the real-space renormalization group, spin wave, and density-matrix renormalization group methods, while the transfer-matrix renormalization group method is invoked to study the thermodynamics. It is found that the magnon spectra consist of a gapless and two gapped branches. Two branches in case (C) have intersections. The coupling dependence of low-energy gaps are analyzed. In a magnetic field, an m=3/2 (m is the magnetization per unit cell) plateau is observed for case (A), while two plateaux at m=1/2 and 3/2 are observed for cases (B) and (C). Between the two plateaux in cases (B) and (C), the sublattice magnetizations for the spins coupled by ferromagnetic interactions have novel decreasing regions with increasing the magnetic field. At finite temperature, the zero-field susceptibility temperature product chi*T and specific heat exhibit distinct exotic features with varying the couplings and temperature for different cases. chi*T is found to converge as T approaches zero, which is different from the divergent behavior in the spin-(1/2,1) mixed-spin chain without pendants. The observed thermodynamic behaviors are also discussed with the help of their low-lying excitations.

Magnetization plateau and incommensurate spin modulation in Ca3Co2O6

The magnetic properties of a trigonal prism unit of the spin-2 frustrated compound Ca3Co2O6 are studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group method. A magnetization plateau at $ms/3$ ($ms$ is the saturation magnetization) with ferrimagnetic structure is observed. By fitting the experimental data of magnetic curve, an estimation of the couplings gives J1=-26.84K, J_{2}=0.39K, and J_{3}=0.52K. The local magnetic moments are unveiled to exhibit an incommensurate sinusoidally modulation along the three chains of the trigonal prism, which gives a strong theoretical support to the experimentally observed incommensurate partially disordered antiferromagnetic state for Ca3Co2O6. The present result suggests that the modulation indeed originates from the competition of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic couplings.

Phase transitions and thermodynamics of the two-dimensional Ising model on a distorted Kagomé lattice

The two-dimensional Ising model on a distorted Kagomé lattice is studied by means of exact solutions and the tensor renormalisation group (TRG) method. The zero-field phase diagrams are obtained, where three phases such as ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic and paramagnetic phases, along with the second-order phase transitions, have been identified. The TRG results are quite accurate and reliable in comparison to the exact solutions. In a magnetic field, the magnetization ($m$), susceptibility and specific heat are studied by the TRG algorithm, where the $m=1/3$ plateaux are observed in the magnetization curves for some couplings. The experimental data of susceptibility for the complex Co(N$_3$)$_2$(bpg)$\cdot$ DMF$_{4/3}$ are fitted with the TRG results, giving the couplings of the complex $J=22K$ and $J'=33K$.
