Analysis of four-zero textures in $3+1$ framework

The presence of a zero texture in the neutrino mass matrix can indicate the presence of an underlying symmetry which can generate neutrino mass and mixing. In this paper, for the first time we study the four-zero textures of the low energy neutrino mass matrix in the presence of an extra light-sterile neutrino i.e., the 3+1 neutrino scheme. In our analysis we find that out of the 210 possible four-zero textures only 15 textures are allowed. We divide the allowed four-zero textures into two classes -- class $A$ in which the value of mass matrix element $M_{ee}$ is zero and class $B$ in which $M_{ee}$ is non-zero. In this way we obtain ten possible four-zero textures in class $A$ and five possible four-zero textures in class $B$. In our analysis we find that, for normal hierarchy the allowed number of textures in class $A$ ($B$) is nine (three). For the case of inverted hierarchy we find that, two textures in class $A$ are disallowed and these textures are different from the disallowed textures for normal hierarchy in class $A$. However, we find that all the five textures in class $B$ are allowed for the inverted hierarchy. Based on analytic expressions for the elements $M_{αβ}$, we discuss the reasons for certain textures being disallowed. We also discuss the correlations between the different parameters of the allowed textures. Finally, we present the implications of our study on experimental searches for neutrinoless double beta decay.

Understanding the Masses and Mixings of One-Zero Textures in 3+1 Scenario

We present a detailed analysis and phenomenological consequences of neutrino mass matrix, $M_ν$, with one-zero texture in the flavor basis where the active neutrino sector is extended by one sterile neutrino (3+1 case). In particular, our aim is to explore behaviour of the sterile mixing parameters in detail when one of the elements of the neutrino mass matrix goes to zero. To study this, we consider two distinct mass spectrum of the active neutrinos: (i) completely hierarchical mass spectrum with a vanishing neutrino mass and (ii) completely quasidegenerate mass spectrum. In 3+1 scenario, the low energy neutrino mass matrix, $M_ν$, is a $4 \times 4$ matrix and has 10 independent elements. Thus it can have 10 possible one-zero textures. From the earlier studies it can be inferred that, if one assumes one vanishing neutrino mass, then only seven of these $M_ν$ are phenomenologically allowed by the current neutrino oscillation data. On the other hand, if the neutrinos are quasidegenerate then there are eight phenomenologically viable one-zero textures. In this present work, we study the correlations between the sterile mixing parameters for each of these allowed textures for both mass spectrum and also their implications on the effective Majorana mass.

Renormalization Group Evolution of Neutrino Parameters in Presence of Seesaw Threshold Effects and Majorana Phases

We examine the renormalization group evolution (RGE) for different mixing scenarios in the presence of seesaw threshold effects from high energy scale (GUT) to the low electroweak (EW) scale in the Standard Model (SM) and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We consider four mixing scenarios namely Tri-Bimaximal Mixing, Bimaximal Mixing, Hexagonal Mixing and Golden Ratio Mixing which come from different flavor symmetries at the GUT scale. We find that the Majorana phases play an important role in the RGE running of these mixing patterns along with the seesaw threshold corrections. We present a comparative study of the RGE of all these mixing scenarios both with and without Majorana CP phases when seesaw threshold corrections are taken into consideration. We find that in the absence of these Majorana phases both the RGE running and seesaw effects may lead to $θ_{13}<$ 5$^\circ$ at low energies both in the SM and MSSM. However, if the Majorana phases are incorporated to the mixing matrix the running can be enhanced both in the SM and MSSM. Even by incorporating non zero Majorana CP phases in the SM, we do not get $θ_{13}$ in its present 3$σ$ range. The current values of the two mass squared differences and mixing angles including $θ_{13}$ can be produced in the MSSM case with tan$β$ = 10 and non zero Majorana CP phases at low energy. We also calculate the order of effective Majorana mass and Jarlskog Invariant for each scenario under consideration.

Radiative and Seesaw Threshold Corrections to the $S_3$ Symmetric Neutrino Mass Matrix

We systematically analyze the radiative corrections to the $S_3$ symmetric neutrino mass matrix at high energy scale, say the GUT scale, in the charged lepton basis. There are significant corrections to the neutrino parameters both in the Standard Model (SM) and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with large tan$β$, when the renormalization group evolution (RGE) and seesaw threshold effects are taken into consideration. We find that in the SM all three mixing angles and atmospheric mass squared difference are simultaneously obtained in their current 3$σ$ ranges at the electroweak scale. However, the solar mass squared difference is found to be larger than its allowed 3$σ$ range at the low scale in this case. There are significant contributions to neutrino masses and mixing angles in the MSSM with large tan$β$ from the RGEs even in the absence of seesaw threshold corrections. However, we find that the mass squared differences and the mixing angles are obtained in their current 3$σ$ ranges at low energy when the seesaw threshold effects are also taken into account in the MSSM with large tan$β$.

Corrections for tribimaximal, bimaximal and democratic neutrino mixing matrices

In this work we analyze the corrections to tribimaximal (TBM), bimaximal (BM) and democratic (DC) mixing matrices for explaining large reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and checking the consistency with other neutrino mixing angles. The corrections are parameterized in terms of small orthogonal rotations (R) with corresponding modified PMNS matrix of the form $R_{ij}\cdot U \cdot R_{kl}$ where $R_{ij}$ is rotation in ij sector and U is any one of these special matrices. We showed the rotations $R_{13}\cdot U \cdot R_{23}$, $R_{12}\cdot U \cdot R_{13}$ for BM and $R_{13}\cdot U \cdot R_{13}$ for TBM perturbative case successfully fit all neutrino mixing angles within $1σ$ range. The perturbed PMNS matrix $R_{12}\cdot U \cdot R_{13}$ for DC, TBM and $R_{23}\cdot U \cdot R_{23}$ for TBM case is successful in producing mixing angles at 2$σ$ level. The other rotation schemes are either excluded or successful in producing mixing angles at $3σ$ level.

How good is μ-τsymmetry after results on non-zero θ_{13}?

Viability of the μ-τinterchange symmetry imposed as an approximate symmetry (1) on the neutrino mass matrix {\cal M}_{νf} in the flavour basis (2) simultaneously on the charged lepton mass matrix M_l and the neutrino mass matrix M_νand (3) on the underlying Lagrangian is discussed in the light of recent observation of a non-zero reactor mixing angle θ_{13}. In case (1), μ-τsymmetry breaking may be regarded as small (less than 20-30%) only for the inverted or quasidegenerate neutrino mass spectrum and the normal hierarchy would violate it by a large amount. The case (2) is more restrictive and the requirement of relatively small breaking allows only the quasidegenerate spectrum. If neutrinos obtain their masses from the type-I seesaw mechanism then small breaking of the μ-τsymmetry in the underlying Lagrangian may result in a large breaking in {\cal M}_{νf} and even the hierarchical neutrino spectrum may also be consistent with mildly broken μ-τsymmetry of the Lagrangian. Neutrinoless double beta decay provides a good means of distinguishing above scenarios. In particular, non-observation of signal in future experiments such as GERDA would rule out scenarios (1) and (2).

Implication of a vanishing element in 3+1 Scenario

In this paper we study the phenomenological implications of the one zero textures of low energy neutrino mass matrices in presence of a sterile neutrino. We consider the 3+1 scheme and use the results from global fit for short baseline neutrino oscillation data which provides the bounds on the three additional mixing angles. We find that the mass matrix elements $m_{αβ}$ ($α, β= e, μ, τ$) involving only the active states can assume vanishing values in the allowed parameter space for all the mass spectrum. Among the mass matrix elements connecting the active and sterile states, $m_{es}$ and $m_{μs}$ can become small only for the quasi-degenerate neutrinos. The element $m_{τs}$ on the other hand can vanish even for lower values of masses since the 3-4 mixing angle only has an upper bound from current data. The mass matrix element ($m_{ss}$) involving only the sterile state stays $\sim$ $\mathcal{O}$(1) eV in the whole parameter region. We study the possible correlations between the sterile mixing angles and the Majorana phases to give a zero element in the mass matrix.

Four Zero Texture Fermion Mass Matrices in SO(10) GUT

We attempt the integration of the phenomenologically successful four zero texture of fermion mass matrices with the renormalizable SO(10) GUT. The resulting scenario is found to be highly predictive. Firstly, we examine the phenomenological implications of a class of the lepton mass matrices with parallel texture structures and obtain interesting constraints on the parameters of the charged lepton and the neutrino mass matrices. We combine these phenomenological constraints with the constraints obtained from SO(10) GUT to reduce the number of the free parameters and to further constrain the allowed ranges of the free parameters. The solar/atmospheric mixing angles obtained in this analysis are in fairly good agreement with the data.

Minimal extension of tri-bimaximal mixing and generalized Z_2 X Z_2 symmetries

We discuss consequences of combining the effective $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetry of the tri-bimaximal neutrino mass matrix with the CP symmetry. Imposition of such generalized $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetries leads to predictive neutrino mass matrices determined in terms of only four parameters and leads to non-zero $θ_{13}$ and maximal atmospheric mixing angle and CP violating phase. It is shown that an effective generalized $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetry of the mass matrix can arise from the $A_4$ symmetry with specific vacuum alignment. The neutrino mass matrix in the considered model has only three real parameters and leads to determination of the absolute neutrino mass scale as a function of the reactor angle $θ_{13}$.

Two Zero Mass Matrices and Sterile Neutrinos

Recent experimental data is indicative of the existence of sterile neutrinos. The minimal scheme that can account for the data and is consistent with cosmological observations is the 3+1 picture which consists of three predominantly active and one predominantly sterile neutrino with the fourth neutrino being heavier than the other three. Within this scheme there are two possibilities depending on whether the three light states obey normal or inverted hierarchy. In this paper we consider the two zero textures of the low energy neutrino mass matrix in presence of one additional sterile neutrino. We find that among 45 possible two zero textures for this case, 15 are consistent with all current observations. Remarkably, these correspond to the two-zero textures of a three active neutrino mass matrix. We discuss the mass spectrum and the parameter correlations that we find in the various textures. We also present the effective mass governing neutrinoless double beta decay as a function of the lowest mass.

Broken $S_3$ Symmetry in the Neutrino Mass Matrix

We explore the feasibility of the discrete flavor symmetry $S_3$ to explain the pattern of neutrino masses and mixings. In the flavor basis, the neutrino mass matrix is taken to be invariant under $S_3$ symmetry at the zeroth order. The effects of breaking $S_3$ symmetry by matrices invariant under different $S_2$ subgroups of $S_3$ are studied. The resulting retrocirculant perturbation matrix leads to the perturbed $S_3$ neutrino mass matrix having a trimaximal eigenvector as suggested by the solar neutrino data. It is found that after the third order perturbation the neutrino mixings only depend on the perturbation parameter and are consistent with the current experimental data leading to very small deviations from tribimaximal mixing. These perturbations in the $S_3$ invariant neutrino mass matrix result in interesting interplay between the solar and the reactor neutrino mixing angles. We also get a strongly suppressed range of effective Majorana mass which lies well within the reach of the ongoing experiments.

Near Maximal Atmospheric Mixing in Neutrino Mass Matrices with Two Vanishing Minors

In the flavor basis there are seven cases of two vanishing minors in the neutrino mass matrix which can accommodate the present neutrino oscillation data including the recent T2K data. It is found that two of these cases, namely $B_5$ and $B_6$ predict near maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing in the limit of large effective neutrino mass. This feature remains irrespective of the values of solar and reactor mixing angles. A non-zero reactor mixing angle is naturally accommodated in these textures.

Parametrizing the Lepton Mixing Matrix in terms of Charged Lepton Corrections

We consider a parametrization of the lepton mixing matrix in which the deviations from maximal atmospheric mixing and vanishing reactor mixing are obtained in terms of small corrections from the charged lepton sector. Relatively large deviations for the reactor mixing angle from zero as indicated by T2K experiment can be obtained in this parametrization. We are able to further reduce the number of complex phases, thus, simplifying the analysis. In addition, we have obtained the sides of unitarity triangles and the vacuum oscillation probabilities in this parametrization. The Jarlskog rephasing invariant measure of CP violation at the leading order has a single phase difference which can be identified as Dirac-type CP violating phase in this parametrization.

Zero Textures of the Neutrino Mass Matrix from Cyclic Family Symmetry

We present the symmetry realization of the phenomenologically viable Frampton-Glashow-Marfatia (FGM) two zero texture neutrino mass matrices in the flavor basis within the framework of the type (I+II) seesaw mechanism natural to SO(10) grand unification. A small Abelian cyclic symmetry group $Z_3$ is used to realize these textures except for class C for which the symmetry is enlarged to $Z_4$. The scalar sector is restricted to the Standard Model (SM) Higgs doublet to suppress the flavor changing neutral currents. Other scalar fields used for symmetry realization are at the most two scalar triplets and, in some cases, a complex scalar singlet. Symmetry realization of one zero textures has, also, been presented.

CP-odd Weak Basis Invariants for Neutrino Mass Matrices with a Texture Zero and a Vanishing Minor

We construct the $CP$-odd weak basis invariants in the flavor basis for all the phenomenologically viable neutrino mass matrices with a texture zero and a vanishing minor and, also, find the necessary and sufficient conditions for $CP$ invariance . We examine the interrelationships between different $CP$-odd weak basis invariants for these texture structures and investigate their implications for Dirac- and Majorana-type $CP$ violation.

Neutrino Mass Matrices with a Texture Zero and a Vanishing Minor

We study the implications of the simultaneous existence of a texture zero and a vanishing minor in the neutrino mass matrix. There are thirty six possible texture structures of this type, twenty one of which reduce to two texture zero cases which have, already, been extensively studied. Of the remaining fifteen textures only six are allowed by the current data. We examine the phenomenological implications of the allowed texture structures for Majorana type CP-violating phases, 1-3 mixing angle and Dirac type CP-violating phase. All these possible textures can be generated through the seesaw mechanism and realized in the framework of discrete abelian flavor symmetry. We present the symmetry realization of these texture structures.

Parallel hybrid textures of lepton mass matrices

We analyse the parallel hybrid texture structures in the charged lepton and the neutrino sector. These parallel hybrid texture structures have physical implications as they cannot be obtained from arbitrary lepton mass matrices through weak basis transformations. The total sixty parallel hybrid texture structures can be grouped into twelve classes, and all the hybrid textures in the same class have identical physical implications. We examine all the twelve classes under the assumption of non-factorizable phases in the neutrino mass matrix. Five out of the total twelve classes are found to be phenomenologically disallowed. We study the phenomenological implications of the allowed classes for 1-3 mixing angle, Majorana and Dirac-type $CP$ violating phases. Interesting constraints on effective Majorana mass are obtained for all the allowed classes.

Phenomenological Analysis of Hybrid Textures of Neutrinos

We present a comprehensive phenomenological analysis of the allowed hybrid textures of neutrinos. Out of a total of sixty hybrid textures with one equality between the elements of neutrino mass matrix and one texture zero only twenty three are found to be viable at 99% C.L. whereas the earlier analysis found fifty four to be viable. We examine the phenomenological implications of the allowed hybrid textures including Majorana type CP-violating phases, 1-3 mixing angle and Dirac type CP-violating phase, $δ$. We, also, obtain lower bound on effective Majorana mass for all the allowed hybrid textures.

Tribimaximal mixing in neutrino mass matrices with texture zeros or vanishing minors

We study the existence of one/two texture zeros or one/two vanishing minors in the neutrino mass matrix with $μτ$ symmetry. In the basis where the charged lepton mass matrix and the Dirac neutrino mass matrix are diagonal, the one/two zeros or one/two vanishing minors in the right-handed Majorana mass matrix having $μτ$ symmetry will propagate via seesaw mechanism as one/two vanishing minors or one/two texture zeros in the neutrino mass matrix with $μτ$ symmetry respectively. It is found that only five such texture structures of the neutrino mass matrix are phenomenologically viable. For tribimaximal mixing, these texture structures reduce the number of free parameters to one. Interesting predictions are obtained for the effective Majorana mass $M_{ee}$, the absolute mass scale and the Majorana-type CP violating phases.
