Eliashberg theory of the Jahn-Teller-Hubbard model

We study a multiorbital Hubbard model coupled to local Jahn-Teller phonons to investigate the superconducting state realized in fullerides. A weak-coupling approach is employed in combination with a local self-energy approximation. In addition to the normal and anomalous self-energies of the electrons, we consider the phonon self-energy, which allows a self-consistent treatment of the energetics. The frequency dependence of the self-energies and their characteristic coefficients, such as renormalization factors and dampings, are investigated in detail using numerical calculations. It is clarified that the anisotropic phonons play an important role in the stabilization of the superconducting state. By comparing the full results to those without phonon self-energies, we show that the superconductivity is stabilized by the softening of the phonon frequency. The effects of electronic fluctuations are also considered, which leads to the coupling to orbitons, an analog of plasmons in the electron gas. This additional contribution further stabilizes the superconducting state.

Giant intrinsic rectification and nonlinear Hall effect under time-reversal symmetry in a trigonal superconductor

Nonreciprocal or nonlinear responses in symmetry-broken systems are powerful probes of emergent properties in quantum materials, including superconductors, magnets, and topological materials. Recently, vortex matter has been recognized as a key ingredient of giant nonlinear responses in superconductors with broken inversion symmetry. However, nonlinear effects have been probed as excess voltage only under broken time-reversal symmetry. In this study, we report intrinsic rectification and nonlinear anomalous Hall effect under time-reversal symmetry in the noncentrosymmetric trigonal superconductor PbTaSe2. The magnitude of anomalous nonlinear transport is two orders of magnitude larger than those in the normal state, and the directional dependence of nonlinear signals are fully consistent with crystal symmetry. The enhanced nonlinearity is semiquantitatively explained by the asymmetric Hall effect of vortex-antivortex string pairs in noncentrosymmetric systems. This study enriches the literature on nonlinear phenomena by revealing a novel aspect of quantum transport in noncentrosymmetric superconductors.

Multipolar ordering in the three-orbital Hubbard model

The ground-state phase diagrams of the three-orbital t2g Hubbard model are studied using a Hartree-Fock approximation. First, a complete set of multipolar order parameters for t2g models defined in terms of the effective total angular momentum jeff are theoretically derived. These order parameters can classify off-diagonal orders between jeff = 1/2 and jeff = 3/2 manifolds. Second, through extensive Hartree-Fock calculations, the ground-state phase diagrams in the space of (1) the onsite Coulomb repulsion U, (2) the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and (3) the number of electrons are mapped out. A variety of nontrivial quantum phases with jeff-diagonal and jeff-off-diagonal multipole orders are found. Finally, future studies using more numerically expensive methods, such as dynamical mean-field theory are discussed.

Electronic multipoles and multiplet pairs induced from Pomeranchuk and Cooper instabilities of Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces

It has recently been pointed out that Fermi surfaces can remain even in the superconductors under the symmetric spin-orbit interaction and broken time-reversal symmetry. Using the linear response theory, we study the instability of such systems toward ordering, which is an intrinsic property of the Fermi surfaces. The ordered states are classified into diagonal and offdiagonal ones, each of which respectively indicates the Pomeranchuk instability and Cooper pairing not of original electron but of Bogoliubov particles (bogolons). The corresponding order parameters are expanded by multipole moments (diagonal order parameter) and multiplet pair amplitudes (offdiagonal order parameter) of original electrons, which are induced by the internal fields arising from bogolons' ordering. While the bogolons' order parameters partially inherit the characters of the original electrons, many order parameter components mix with similar magnitude. Hence there is no clear-cut distinction whether the phase transition is diagonal or offdiagonal ordering in terms of the original electrons. These ordering instabilities inside the superconducting states provide insights into the superconductors which have the second phase transition below the first transition temperature.

Vortex bound state of Kondo lattice coupled to compensated metal

We theoretically study physical properties of the low-energy quasiparticle excitations at the vortex core in the full-gap superconducting state of the Kondo lattice coupled to compensated metals. Based on the mean-field description of the superconducting state, we numerically solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations for the tight-binding Hamiltonian. The isolated vortex is characterized by a length scale independent of the magnitude of the interaction and the energy level of the core bound state is the same order as the bulk gap. These properties are in strong contrast to the conventional s-wave superconductor. To gain further insights, we also consider the effective Hamiltonian in the continuous limit and construct the theoretical framework of the quasiclassical Green's function of conduction electrons. With the use of the Kramer-Pesch approximation, we analytically derive the spectral function describing the quasiparticle excitations which is consistent with the numerics. It has been revealed that the properties of the vortex bound state are closely connected to the characteristic odd frequency dependence of both the normal and anomalous self-energies which is proportional to the inverse of frequency.

Nickelate superconductors $--$ Multiorbital nature and spin freezing

Superconductivity with a remarkably high $T_c$ has recently been found in Sr-doped NdNiO$_2$ thin films. While this system bears strong similarities to the cuprates, some differences, such as a weaker antiferromagnetic exchange coupling and possible high-spin moments on the doped Ni sites have been pointed out. Here, we investigate the effect of Hund coupling and crystal field splitting in a simple model system and argue that a multiorbital description of nickelate superconductors is warranted, especially in the strongly hole-doped regime. We then look at this system from the viewpoint of the spin-freezing theory of unconventional superconductivity, which provides a unified understanding of unconventional superconductivity in a broad range of compounds. Sr$_{0.2}$Nd$_{0.8}$NiO$_2$ falls into a parameter regime influenced by two spin-freezing crossovers, one related to the emergent multi-orbital nature in the strongly doped regime and the other related to the single-band character and square lattice geometry in the weakly doped regime.

A spin-freezing perspective on cuprates

The high-temperature superconducting state in cuprates appears if charge carriers are doped into a Mott insulating parent compound. An unresolved puzzle is the unconventional nature of the normal state above the superconducting dome, and its connection to the superconducting instability. At weak hole-doping, a "pseudo-gap" metal state with signatures of time-reversal symmetry breaking is observed, which near optimal doping changes into a "strange metal" with non-Fermi liquid properties. Qualitatively similar phase diagrams are found in multi-orbital systems, such as pnictides, where the unconventional metal states arise from a Hund coupling induced spin-freezing. Here, we show that the relevant model for cuprates, the single-orbital Hubbard model on the square lattice, can be mapped onto an effective multi-orbital problem with strong ferromagnetic Hund coupling. The spin-freezing physics of this multi-orbital system explains the phenomenology of cuprates, including the pseudo-gap, the strange metal, and the d-wave superconducting instability. Our analysis suggests that spin-freezing is the universal mechanism which controls the properties of unconventional superconductors.

Critical Temperature Enhancement of Topological Superconductors: A Dynamical Mean Field Study

We show that a critical temperature Tc for spin-singlet two-dimensional superconductivity is enhanced by a cooperation between the Zeeman magnetic field and the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, where a superconductivity becomes topologically non-trivial below Tc. The dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) with the segment-based hybridization-expansion continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver (ct-HYB) is used for accurately evaluating a critical temperature, without any Fermion sign problem. A strong-coupling approach shows that spin-flip driven local pair hopping leads to part of this enhancement, especially effects of the magnetic field. We propose physical settings suitable for verifying the present calculations, one-atom-layer system on Si(111) and ionic-liquid based electric double-layer transistors (EDLTs).

Electronic orders in multi-orbital Hubbard models with lifted orbital degeneracy

We study the symmetry-broken phases in two- and three-orbital Hubbard models with lifted orbital degeneracy using dynamical mean field theory. On the technical level, we explain how symmetry relations can be exploited to measure the four-point correlation functions needed for the calculation of the lattice susceptibilities. In the half-filled two-orbital model with crystal field splitting, we find an instability of the metallic phase to spin-orbital order with neither spin nor orbital moment. This ordered phase is shown to be related to the recently discovered fluctuating-moment induced spin-triplet superconducting state in the orbitally degenerate model with shifted chemical potential. In the three-orbital case, we consider the effect of a crystal field splitting on the spin-triplet superconducting state in the model with positive Hund coupling, and the spin-singlet superconducting state in the case of negative Hund coupling. It is demonstrated that for certain crystal field splittings the higher energy orbitals instead of the lower ones are relevant for superconductivity, and that $T_c$ can be enhanced by the crystal field effect. We comment on the implications of our results for the superconductivity in strontium ruthenates, and for the recently reported light-enhanced superconducting state in alkali-doped fullerides.

Finite-Temperature Properties of Three-Dimensional Classical Chiral Helimagnets

A three-dimensional chiral helimagnet is analyzed using a mean-field (MF) analysis and a classical Monte Carlo (MC) simulation at finite temperatures. We consider a Hamiltonian containing Heisenberg exchange and uni-axial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on a simple cubic lattice. Magnetization curves calculated by the MF theory are qualitatively consistent with those observed in experiments. A comparison between lattice and continuum models clarifies the region where the continuum approximation can be applied. By combining the MF theory with the classical MC method, it is also clarified that results are quantitatively much improved by including spin correlations in the layer perpendicular to the helical axis. On the basis of our simple model, interaction parameters in $CrNb_3S_6$ are estimated. These values of exchange interactions justify a physical picture that the spins are strongly coupled in the two-dimensional layer and are weakly interacted with those in the helical chain.

Long-range orders, spin- and orbital-freezing in the two-band Hubbard model

We solve the orbitally degenerate two-band Hubbard model within dynamical mean field theory and map out the instabilities to various symmetry-broken phases based on an analysis of the corresponding lattice susceptibilities. Phase diagrams as a function of the Hund coupling parameter J are obtained both for the model with rotationally invariant interaction and for the model with Ising-type anisotropy. For negative J, an intra-orbital spin-singlet superconducting phase appears at low temperatures, while the normal state properties are characterized by an orbital freezing phenomenon. This is the negative-J analogue of the recently discovered fluctuating-moment induced s-wave spin-triplet superconductivity in the spin-freezing regime of multi-orbital models with J>0.

Tunneling and Josephson effects in odd-frequency superconductor junctions: A study on multi-channel Kondo chain

Junction systems of odd-frequency (OF) superconductors are investigated based on a mean-field Hamiltonian formalism. One-dimensional two-channel Kondo lattice (TCKL) is taken as a concrete example of OF superconductors. Properties of normal and Andreev reflections are examined in a normal metal/superconductor junction. Unlike conventional superconductors, normal reflection is always present due to the normal self energy that necessarily appears in the present OF pairing state. The conductance reflects the difference between repulsive and attractive potentials located at the interface, which is in contrast with the preexisting superconducting junctions. Josephson junction is also constructed by connecting TCKL with the other types of superconductors. The results can be understood from symmetry of the induced Cooper pairs at the edge in the presence of spin/orbital symmetry breaking. It has also been demonstrated that the symmetry argument for Cooper pairs is useful in explaining Meissner response in bulk.

Phase diagram of pyrochlore iridates: all-in-all-out magnetic ordering and non-Fermi liquid properties

We study the prototype 5d pyrochlore iridate Y2Ir2O7 from first principles using the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). We map out the phase diagram in the space of temperature, onsite Coulomb repulsion U, and filling. Consistent with experiments, we find that an all-in-all-out ordered insulating phase is stable for realistic values of U. The trigonal crystal field enhances the magnetic moments of the jeff=1/2 doublet, and strong inter-band correlations are induced by the Coulomb interaction, which indicates that a three-band description is important. We demonstrate a substantial band narrowing in the paramagnetic metallic phase and non-Fermi liquid behavior in the electron/hole doped system originating from long-lived quasi-spin moments induced by nearly flat bands.

Superconductivity from emerging magnetic moments

Multi-orbital Hubbard models are shown to exhibit a spatially isotropic spin-triplet superconducting phase, where equal-spin electrons in different local orbitals are paired. This superconducting state is stabilized in the spin-freezing crossover regime, where local moments emerge in the metal phase, and the pairing is substantially assisted by spin anisotropy. The phase diagram features a superconducting dome below a non-Fermi liquid metallic region and next to a magnetically ordered phase. We suggest that this type of fluctuating-moment induced superconductivity, which is not originating from fluctuations near a quantum critical point, may be realized in spin-triplet superconductors such as strontium ruthenates and uranium compounds.

Anisotropic Magnetic Response in Kondo Lattice with Antiferromagnetic Order

Magnetic properties are investigated for the Kondo lattice by using the continuous time quantum Monte Colro (CT-QMC) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The DMFT+CT-QMC approach is extended so as to derive the anisotropic magnetic response in the antiferromagnetic phase. The longitudinal and transverse magnetic susceptibilities are numerically derived in the antiferromagnetic phase. For the RKKY regime with a small Kondo coupling, the transverse susceptibility does not decrease below the transition temperature while the longitudinal susceptibility decreases as expected from the mean field picture. In the competing region between the RKKY interaction and the Kondo effect, however, both longitudinal and transverse susceptibilities decrease below the transition temperature. The results obtained naturally explain the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility observed in CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($T$=Ru,Os,Fe) family.

Collective excitations from composite orders in Kondo lattice with non-Kramers doublets

Goldstone modes emerge associated with spontaneous breakdown of the continuous symmetry in the two-channel Kondo lattice, which describes strongly correlated f-electron systems with a non-Kramers doublet at each site. This paper derives the spectra of these collective modes by the equation of motion method together with the random phase approximation. The diagonal composite order breaks the SU(2) channel symmetry, and the symmetry-restoring collective mode couples with magnetic field. On the other hand, the off-diagonal or superconducting composite order breaks the gauge symmetry of conduction electrons, and the collective mode couples with charge excitations near the zone boundary. At half-filling of the conduction bands, the spectra of these two modes become identical by a shift of the momentum, owing to the SO(5) symmetry of the system. The velocity of each Goldstone mode involves not only the Fermi velocity of conduction electrons but amplitude of the mean field as a multiplying factor. Detection of the Goldstone mode should provide a way to identify the composite order parameter.

Composite Orders and Lifshitz Transition of Heavy Electrons

Magnetic and other unconventional electronic orders are discussed for heavy electrons. In addition to the ordinary Kondo lattice, we consider non-Kramers systems taking the two-channel Kondo lattice, and another lattice that consists of a singlet-triplet f2 configuration. The latter gives a scalar order with staggered sublattices of crystalline-electric-field (CEF) and Kondo singlets, which accounts for the observed order in PrFe4P12. In the two-channel Kondo lattice, an odd-frequency pairing is realized that becomes degenerate at half-filling with a composite order involving both localized and conduction electrons. The degeneracy is interpreted in terms of a hidden SO(5) symmetry. For the ordinary Kondo lattice with exchange interaction J, we take insulating ground states as reference. The metallic states are approached by infinitesimal doping of carriers either from the Kondo insulator or from the antiferromagnetic insulator. By adding intersite exchange we find that location of the band extremum of the heavy band depends on the value of J. The change of J gives topological change of the Fermi surface, which corresponds to a generalized version of the Lifshitz transition, and occurs separately from the quantum critical point of the antiferromagnetic order.

Mean-field description of odd-frequency superconductivity with staggered ordering vector

A low-energy fixed-point Hamiltonian is constructed for the s-wave odd-frequency pairing state with staggered ordering vector in the two-channel Kondo lattice. The effective model is justified because it reproduces low-energy behaviors of self energy obtained by the dynamical mean-field theory. The retardation effect is essential for the odd-frequency pairing, which comes from the hybridization process between conduction electrons and pseudofermions originating from localized spins at low energies. Using the effective Hamiltonian, the electromagnetic response functions are microscopically calculated. The present system shows the "weak" Meissner effect, where both paramagnetic and diamagnetic parts contribute to the Meissner kernel to give a small total diamagnetic response in the superconducting state. This feature is in contrast to the ordinary s-wave BCS pairing where only the diamagnetic kernel is finite in the ground state. The staggered nature of the odd-frequency order parameter plays an important role for the sign of the Meissner kernel.

Charge order in Kondo lattice systems

Charge order is a commonly observed phenomenon in strongly correlated materials. However, most theories are based on a repulsive inter-site Coulomb interaction in order to explain charge order. We here show that only due to local interactions, charge order is favorable in heavy fermion systems at quarter filling. The driving force is the Kondo effect, which leads to a non-linear dependence on the filling of the lattice site for the energy gain. We use dynamical mean field theory combined with numerical renormalization group to demonstrate the existence of charge order at quarter filling for a Kondo lattice model.

Itinerant vs Localized Heavy-Electron Magnetism

It is demonstrated that itinerant-localized transition of heavy electrons occurs inside the magnetically ordered phase of the Kondo-Heisenberg lattice. The phase diagram and electronic structure are derived by means of the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo combined with the dynamical mean-field theory. Around the itinerant-localized transition, nearly flat bands appear on the Fermi surface with almost vanishing quasi-particle renormalization factor. At the same time, there emerges a strong local magnetic fluctuation with a minute energy scale. Considering both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions, coherent understanding is achieved on rich phase diagrams observed in CeRh$_{1-x}$Co$_x$In$_5$, CeRu$_2$(Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$)$_2$, UGe$_2$ and CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T=Fe,Ru,Os).

Superconductivity of Composite Particles in Two-Channel Kondo Lattice

Emergence of odd-frequency s-wave superconductivity is demonstrated in the two-channel Kondo lattice by means of the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. Around half filling of the conduction bands, divergence of an odd-frequency pairing susceptibility is found, which signals instability toward the superconductivity. The corresponding order parameter is equivalent to a staggered composite-pair amplitude with even frequencies, which involves both localized spins and conduction electrons. A model wave function is constructed for the composite order with use of symmetry operations such as charge conjugation and channel rotations. Given a certain asymmetry of the conduction bands, another s-wave superconductivity is found that has a uniform order parameter. The Kondo effect in the presence of two channels is essential for both types of unconventional superconductivity.

Resolution of Entropy $\ln \sqrt 2$ by Ordering in Two-Channel Kondo Lattice

Peculiar property of electronic order is clarified for the two-channel Kondo lattice. With two conduction electrons per site, the order parameter is a composite quantity involving both local and itinerant degrees of freedom. In contrast to the ordinary Kondo lattice, a heavy electron band is absent above the transition temperature, but is rapidly formed below it. The change of entropy associated with the ordering is found to be close to $\ln \sqrt 2$ per site. This entropy corresponds to the residual entropy in a two-channel Kondo impurity, which has been regarded as due to localized free Majorana particles. The present composite order is interpreted as instability of Majorana particles toward non-Kramers conduction electrons plus heavy fermions that involve localized electrons.

preprint2011arXiv

Diagonal composite order in two-channel Kondo lattice

A novel type of symmetry breaking is reported for the two-channel Kondo lattice where conduction electrons have spin and orbital (channel) degrees of freedom. Using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo and the dynamical mean-field theory, a spontaneous breaking of the orbital symmetry is observed. The tiny breakdown of orbital occupation number, however, vanishes if the conduction electrons have the particle-hole symmetry. The proper order parameter instead is identified as a composite quantity representing the orbital-selective Kondo effect. The single-particle spectrum of the selected orbital shows insulating property, while the other orbital behaves as Fermi liquid. This composite order is the first example of odd-frequency order other than off-diagonal order (superconductivity), and is a candidate of hidden order in $f$-electron systems.

Numerical study of Kondo impurity models with strong potential scattering: - reverse Kondo effect and antiresonance -

Accurate numerical results are derived for transport properties of Kondo impurity systems with potential scattering and orbital degeneracy. Using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QMC) method, static and dynamic physical quantities are derived in a wide temperature range across the Kondo temperature T_K. With strong potential scattering, the resistivity tends to decrease with decreasing temperature, in contrast to the ordinary Kondo effect. Correspondingly, the quasi-particle density of states obtains the antiresonance around the Fermi level. Thermopower also shows characteristic deviation from the standard Kondo behavior, while magnetic susceptibility follows the universal temperature dependence even with strong potential scattering. It is found that the t-matrix in the presence of potential scattering is not a relevant quantity for the Friedel sum rule, for which a proper limit of the f-electron Green's function is introduced. The optical theorem is also discussed in the context of Kondo impurity models with potential scattering. It is shown that optical theorem holds not only in the Fermi-liquid range but also for large energies, and therefore is less restrictive than the Friedel sum rule.

Electronic Order with Staggered Kondo and Crystalline Electric Field Singlets

Novel electronic order is found theoretically for a system where even number of localized electrons per site are coupled with conduction electrons. For precise quantitative study, a variant of the Kondo lattice model is taken with crystalline electric field (CEF) singlet and triplet states for each site. Using the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method, a staggered order with alternating Kondo and CEF singlets is identified for a case with one conduction electron per site being distributed in two conduction bands each of which is quarter-filled. This electronic order accompanies a charge density wave (CDW) of conduction electrons that accumulate more on Kondo-singlet sites than on CEF-singlet sites. Possible relevance of the present order to the scalar order in PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ is discussed.

preprint2010arXiv

Electronic Orders Induced by Kondo Effect in Non-Kramers f-Electron Systems

This paper clarifies the microscopic nature of the staggered scalar order, which is specific to even number of f electrons per site. In such systems, crystalline electric field (CEF) can make a singlet ground state. As exchange interaction with conduction electrons increases, the CEF singlet at each site gives way to Kondo singlets. The collective Kondo singlets are identified with itinerant states that form energy bands. Near the boundary of itinerant and localized states, a new type of electronic order appears with staggered Kondo and CEF singlets. We present a phenomenological three-state model that qualitatively reproduces the characteristic phase diagram, which have been obtained numerically with use of the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo combined with the dynamical mean-field theory. The scalar order observed in PrFe_4P_{12} is ascribed to this staggered order accompanying charge density wave (CDW) of conduction electrons. Accurate photoemission and tunneling spectroscopy should be able to probe sharp peaks below and above the Fermi level in the ordered phase.

Microscopic Mechanism for Staggered Scalar Order in PrFe4P12

A microscopic model is proposed for the scalar order in PrFe4P12 where f2 crystalline electric field (CEF) singlet and triplet states interact with two conduction bands. By combining the dynamical mean-field theory and the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo, we obtain an electronic order with staggered Kondo and CEF singlets with the total conduction number being unity per site. The ground state becomes semimetallic provided that the two conduction bands have different occupation numbers. This model naturally explains experimentally observed properties in the ordered phase of PrFe4P12 such as the scalar order parameter, temperature dependence of the resistivity, field-induced staggered moment, and inelastic features in neutron scattering. The Kondo effect plays an essential role for ordering, in strong contrast with ordinary magnetic orders by the RKKY interaction.

Continuous-Time Quantum Monte Carlo Approach to Singlet-Triplet Kondo Systems

Dynamical properties are studied numerically for a variant of the Kondo model with singlet and triplet crystalline electric field (CEF) levels where Kondo and CEF singlets compete for the ground state. Using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method, we derive the $t$-matrix of conduction electrons and dynamical susceptibilities of local electrons without encountering the negative sign problem. When the CEF splitting is comparable to the Kondo temperature, the dynamical response has only a quasi-elastic peak. Nevertheless, the local single-particle spectrum shows an energy gap in strong contrast with the ordinary Kondo model.

Itinerant Antiferromagnetism in Infinite Dimensional Kondo Lattice

Highly accurate numerical results for single-particle spectrum and order parameter are obtained for the magnetically ordered Kondo lattice by means of the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. Hybridized energy bands involving local spins are identified in the Néel state as a hallmark of itinerant antiferromagnetism. At the boundary of the reduced Brillouin zone, the two-fold degeneracy remains in spite of the doubled unit cell. This degeneracy results if the molecular field felt by localized spins has identical magnitude and reversed direction with that of conduction electrons. The persistent Kondo effect is responsible for the behavior. The antiferromagnetic quantum transition occurs inside the itinerant regime, and does not accompany the itinerant-localized transition.
