Compton Scattering Energy Spectrum for Si and Ge Systems

In the present work, we study the atomic Compton Scattering which could have great impacts on dark matter direct detection experiments. We give a quantitative analysis of the Compton scattering energy spectrum for Si and Ge atomic systems. The theoretical results on Compton scattering are calculated within the frameworks of free electron approximation (FEA) and relativistic impulse approximation (RIA). The low-energy transfer and near photoionization threshold regions are especially considered in this work. In RIA calculation, to obtain the atomic ground states, we adopt an \emph{ab initio} calculation in the fully relativistic Dirac-Fock theory.

Relativistic Impulse Approximation in Compton Scattering

Relativistic impulse approximation (RIA) has been widely used in atomic, condensed matter, nuclear, and elementary particle physics. In former treatments of RIA formulation, differential cross sections for Compton scattering processes were factorized into atomic Compton profiles by performing further simplified approximations in the integration. In this study, we develop an ``exact'' numerical method without using any further simplified approximations or factorization treatments. The validity of the approximations and factorizations used in former RIA treatments can be tested using our approach. Calculations for C, Cu, Ge, and Xe atomic systems are carried out using Dirac-Fock wavefunctions, and comparisons between the proposed approach and former treatments of RIA are performed and discussed in detail. Numerical results indicate that these simplified approximations work reasonably in the Compton peak region, and our results have little difference with the best of the former RIA treatments in the entire energy region. While in regions far from the Compton peak, the RIA results become inaccurate, even when our ``exact'' numerical treatment is used.

Photoionization of Xe and Rn from the relativistic random-phase theory

Photoionization cross section $σ_{nκ}$, asymmetry parameter $β_{nκ}$, and polarization parameters $ξ_{nκ}$, $η_{nκ}$, $ζ_{nκ}$ of Xe and Rn are calculated in the fully relativistic formalism. To deal with the relativistic and correlation effects, we adopt the relativistic random-phase theory with channel couplings among different subshells. Energy ranges for giant \emph{d}-resonance regions are especially considered.

Relativistic photoionization of H isoelectronic series including plasma shielding effects

With plasma shielding effects of the Debye-Hückel model, we investigate the relativistic photoionization processes of H, Nb$^{40+}$ and Pb$^{81+}$ plasmas in the H-isoelectronic series. The shielded nuclear potential of Yukawa-type experienced by the electron is parameterized by Debye-length $D$. To account for relativistic effects non- perturbatively, we solve the Dirac equation for the bound as well as continuum wavefunctions. Contributions from multipole fields are calculated for high incident photon energies, while the angular distribution and spin polarization parameters of photoelectrons are provided in the electric-dipole approximation. Our results of photoionization cross sections for the H plasma agree with other available theoretical calculations. The interplay between the relativistic and plasma shielding effects on the photoionization parameters is also studied. \keywords{Photoionization, Multipole effect, Debye plasma, Hydrogen atom, Hydrogen-like ions

Atomic ionization by sterile-to-active neutrino conversion and constraints on dark matter sterile neutrinos with germanium detectors

The transition magnetic moment of a sterile-to-active neutrino conversion gives rise to not only radiative decay of a sterile neutrino, but also its non-standard interaction (NSI) with matter. For sterile neutrinos of keV-mass as dark matter candidates, their decay signals are actively searched for in cosmic X-ray spectra. In this work, we consider the NSI that leads to atomic ionization, which can be detected by direct dark matter experiments. It is found that this inelastic scattering process for a nonrelativistic sterile neutrino has a pronounced enhancement in the differential cross section at energy transfer about half of its mass, manifesting experimentally as peaks in the measurable energy spectra. The enhancement effects gradually smear out as the sterile neutrino becomes relativistic. Using data taken with germanium detectors that have fine energy resolution in keV and sub-keV regimes, constraints on sterile neutrino mass and its transition magnetic moment are derived and compared with those from astrophysical observations.

Discrimination of neutrons and γ-rays in liquid scintillator based on Elman neural network

In this work, a new neutron and γ(n/γ) discrimination method based on an Elman Neural Network (ENN) is proposed to improve the discrimination performance of liquid scintillator (LS) detectors. Neutron and γ data were acquired from an EJ-335 LS detector, which was exposed in a 241Am-9Be radiation field. Neutron and γ events were discriminated using two methods of artificial neural network including the ENN and a typical Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) as a control. The results show that the two methods have different n/γ discrimination performances. Compared to the BPNN, the ENN provides an improved of Figure of Merit (FOM) in n/γ discrimination. The FOM increases from 0.907 {\pm} 0.034 to 0.953 {\pm} 0.037 by using the new method of the ENN. The proposed n/γ discrimination method based on ENN provides a new choice of pulse shape discrimination in neutron detection.

Exothermic isospin-violating dark matter after SuperCDMS and CDEX

We show that exothermic isospin-violating dark matter (IVDM) can make the results of the latest CDMS-Si experiment consistent with recent null experiments, such as XENON10, XENON100, LUX, CDEX, and SuperCDMS, whereas for the CoGeNT experiment, a strong tension still persists. For CDMS-Si, separate exothermic dark matter or isospin-violating dark matter cannot fully ameliorate the tensions among these experiments; the tension disappears only if exothermic scattering is combined with an isospin-violating effect of f_n/f_p=-0.7. For such exothermic IVDM to exist, at least a new vector gauge boson (dark photon or dark Z') that connects SM quarks to Majorana-type DM particles is required.

Study of the material photon and electron background and the liquid argon detector veto efficiency of the CDEX-10 experiment

The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) is located at the China Jinping underground laboratory (CJPL) and aims to directly detect the WIMP flux with high sensitivity in the low mass region. Here we present a study of the predicted photon and electron backgrounds including the background contribution of the structure materials of the germanium detector, the passive shielding materials, and the intrinsic radioactivity of the liquid argon that serves as an anti-Compton active shielding detector. A detailed geometry is modeled and the background contribution has been simulated based on the measured radioactivities of all possible components within the GEANT4 program. Then the photon and electron background level in the energy region of interest (<10^-2 events kg-1 day-1 keV-1 (cpkkd)) is predicted based on Monte Carlo simulations. The simulated result is consistent with the design goal of CDEX-10 experiment, 0.1 cpkkd, which shows that the active and passive shield design of CDEX-10 is effective and feasible.

The CDEX-1 1 kg Point-Contact Germanium Detector for Low Mass Dark Matter Searches

The CDEX Collaboration has been established for direct detection of light dark matter particles, using ultra-low energy threshold p-type point-contact germanium detectors, in China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL). The first 1 kg point-contact germanium detector with a sub-keV energy threshold has been tested in a passive shielding system located in CJPL. The outputs from both the point-contact p+ electrode and the outside n+ electrode make it possible to scan the lower energy range of less than 1 keV and at the same time to detect the higher energy range up to 3 MeV. The outputs from both p+ and n+ electrode may also provide a more powerful method for signal discrimination for dark matter experiment. Some key parameters, including energy resolution, dead time, decay times of internal X-rays, and system stability, have been tested and measured. The results show that the 1 kg point-contact germanium detector, together with its shielding system and electronics, can run smoothly with good performances. This detector system will be deployed for dark matter search experiments.

Derivations of Atomic Ionization Effects Induced by Neutrino Magnetic Moments

A recent paper [M.B. Voloshin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 201801 (2010)] pointed out that our earlier derivations of atomic ionization cross-section due to neutrino magnetic moments (arXiv:1001.2074v2) involved unjustified assumptions. We confirm and elaborate on this comment with these notes. We caution that the results of the sum-rule approach in this paper contradict the expected behaviour in atomic transitions.
