On Geometries and Monodromies for Branes of Codimension Two

We study geometries for the NS5-, the KK5- and the $5^2_2$-branes of codimension two in type II and heterotic string theories. The geometries are classified by monodromies that each brane has. They are the $B$-, the general coordinate and the $β$-transformations of the spacetime metric, the $B$-field and the dilaton (and the gauge fields). We show that the monodromy nature appears also in the geometric quantities such as the curvature and the complex structures of spacetime. They are linearly realized in the doubled (generalized) structures in the doubled space.

Analytic model for photometric variation due to starspots on a differentially rotating star

We present an analytic model of the lightcurve variation for stars with non-evolving starspots on a differentially rotating surface. The Fourier coefficients of the harmonics of the rotation period are expressed in terms of the latitude of the spot, $\ell_{s}$, and the observer's line-of-sight direction, $\ell_{o}$, including the limb darkening effect. We generate different realizations of multi-spots according to the model, and perform mock observations of the resulting lightcurve modulations. We discuss to what extent one can recover the properties of the spots and the parameters for the differential rotation law from the periodogram analysis. Although our analytical model neglects the evolution of spots on the stellar surface (dynamical motion, creation and annihilation), it provides a basic framework to interpret the photometric variation of stars, in particular from the existing Kepler data and the future space-born mission. It is also applicable to photometric modulations induced by rotation of various astronomical objects.

Hyperkähler, Bi-hypercomplex, Generalized Hyperkähler Structures and T-duality

We investigate comprehensive relations among T-duality, complex and bi-hermitian structures $(J_+, J_-)$ in two-dimensional $\mathcal{N} =(2,2)$ sigma models with/without twisted chiral multiplets. The bi-hermitian structures $(J_+,J_-)$ embedded in generalized Kähler structures $(\mathcal{J}_+,\mathcal{J}_-)$ are organized into the algebra of the tri-complex numbers. We newly write down an analogue of the Buscher rule by which the T-duality transformation of the bi-hermitian and Kähler structures are apparent. We also study the bi-hypercomplex and hyperkähler cases in $\mathcal{N} = (4,4)$ theories. They are expressed, as a T-duality covariant fashion, in the generalized hyperkähler structures and form the split-bi-quaternion algebras. As a concrete example, we show the explicit T-duality relation between the hyperkähler structures of the KK-monopole (Taub-NUT space) and the bi-hypercomplex structures of the H-monopole (smeared NS5-brane). Utilizing this result, we comment on a T-duality relation for the worldsheet instantons in these geometries.

Higher Derivative Supersymmetric Nonlinear Sigma Models on Hermitian Symmetric Spaces, and BPS States Therein

We formulate four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on Hermitian symmetric spaces with higher derivative terms, free from the auxiliary field problem and the Ostrogradski's ghosts, as gauged linear sigma models. We then study Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield equations preserving 1/2 or 1/4 supersymmetries. We find that there are distinct branches, that we call canonical ($F=0$) and non-canonical ($F\neq 0$) branches, associated with solutions to auxiliary fields $F$ in chiral multiplets. For the ${\mathbb C}P^N$ model, we obtain a supersymmetric ${\mathbb C}P^N$ Skyrme-Faddeev model in the canonical branch while in the non-canonical branch the Lagrangian consists of solely the ${\mathbb C}P^N$ Skyrme-Faddeev term without a canonical kinetic term. These structures can be extended to the Grassmann manifold $G_{M,N} = SU(M)/[SU(M-N)\times SU(N) \times U(1)]$. For other Hermitian symmetric spaces such as the quadric surface $Q^{N-2}=SO(N)/[SO(N-2) \times U(1)])$, we impose F-term (holomorphic) constraints for embedding them into ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ or Grassmann manifold. We find that these constraints are consistent in the canonical branch but yield additional constraints on the dynamical fields thus reducing the target spaces in the non-canonical branch.

World-volume Effective Theories of Locally Non-geometric Branes

We study world-volume effective theories of five-branes in type II string theories. We determine the bosonic zero-modes of the NS5-brane, the Kaluza-Klein monopole, the exotic Q5-, R5-branes and a space-filling brane, by direct calculations within the formalism of double field theory (DFT). We show that these zero-modes are Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with the spontaneously broken gauge symmetries in DFT. They are organized into the bosonic part of the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ vector and the $\mathcal{N} = (2,0)$ tensor multiplets. Among other things, we examine the locally non-geometric R5-branes and space-filling branes that are characterized by the winding space. We also study effective theories of five-branes with string worldsheet instanton corrections.

Doubled Aspects of Vaisman Algebroid and Gauge Symmetry in Double Field Theory

The metric algebroid proposed by Vaisman (the Vaisman algebroid) governs the gauge symmetry algebra generated by the C-bracket in double field theory (DFT). We show that the Vaisman algebroid is obtained by an analogue of the Drinfel'd double of Lie algebroids. Based on a geometric realization of doubled space-time as a para-Hermitian manifold, we examine exterior algebras and a para-Dolbeault cohomology on DFT and discuss the structure of the Drinfel'd double behind the DFT gauge symmetry. Similar to the Courant algebroid in the generalized geometry, Lagrangian subbundles $(L,\tilde{L})$ in a para-Hermitian manifold play Dirac-like structures in the Vaisman algebroid. We find that an algebraic origin of the strong constraint in DFT is traced back to the compatibility condition needed for $(L,\tilde{L})$ be a Lie bialgebroid. The analysis provides a foundation toward the "coquecigrue problem" for the gauge symmetry in DFT.

Shapes and alignments of dark matter haloes and their brightest cluster galaxies in 39 strong lensing clusters

We study shapes and alignments of 45 dark matter (DM) haloes and their brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) using a sample of 39 massive clusters from Hubble Frontier Field (HFF), Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH), and Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS). We measure shapes of the DM haloes by strong gravitational lensing, whereas BCG shapes are derived from their light profiles in Hubble Space Telescope images. Our measurements from a large sample of massive clusters presented here provide new constraints on dark matter and cluster astrophysics. We find that DM haloes are on average highly elongated with the mean ellipticity of $0.482\pm 0.028$, and position angles of major axes of DM haloes and their BCGs tend to be aligned well with the mean value of alignment angles of $22.2\pm 3.9$ deg. We find that DM haloes in our sample are on average more elongated than their BCGs with the mean difference of their ellipticities of $0.11\pm 0.03$. In contrast, the Horizon-AGN cosmological hydrodynamical simulation predicts on average similar ellipticities between DM haloes and their central galaxies. While such a difference between the observations and the simulation may well be explained by the difference of their halo mass scales, other possibilities include the bias inherent to strong lensing measurements, limited knowledge of baryon physics, or a limitation of cold dark matter.

Cosmological evolution of orientations of cluster-sized dark matter haloes and their central galaxies in the Horizon-AGN simulation

It is known observationally that the major axes of galaxy clusters and their brightest cluster galaxies are roughly aligned with each other. To understand the origin of the alignment, we identify 40 cluster-sized dark matter (DM) haloes with masses higher than $5\times10^{13}~M_{\odot}$ and their central galaxies (CGs) at $z\approx 0$ in the Horizon-AGN cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We trace the progenitors at 50 different epochs between $0<z<5$. We then fit their shapes and orientations with a triaxial ellipsoid model. While the orientations of both DM haloes and CGs change significantly due to repeated mergers and mass accretions, their relative orientations are well aligned at each epoch even at high redshifts, $z>1$. The alignment becomes tighter with cosmic time; the major axes of the CGs and their host DM haloes at present are aligned on average within $\sim 30^{\circ}$ in the three dimensional space and $\sim 20^{\circ}$ in the projected plane. The orientations of the major axes of DM haloes on average follow one of the eigen-vectors of the surrounding tidal field that corresponds to the {\it slowest collapsing} (or even stretching) mode, and the alignment with the tidal field also becomes tighter. This implies that the orientations of CGs and DM haloes at the present epoch are largely imprinted in the primordial density field of the Universe, whereas strong dynamical interactions such as mergers are important to explain their mutual alignment at each epoch.

A supersymmetric Skyrme model

Construction of a supersymmetric extension of the Skyrme term was a long-standing problem because of the auxiliary field problem; that is, the auxiliary field may propagate and cannot be eliminated, and the problem of having fourth-order time derivative terms. In this paper, we construct for the first time a supersymmetric extension of the Skyrme term in four spacetime dimensions, in the manifestly supersymmetric superfield formalism that does not suffer from the auxiliary field problem. Chiral symmetry breaking in supersymmetric theories results not only in Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons (pions) but also in the same number of quasi-NG bosons so that the low-energy theory is described by an SL(N,C)-valued matrix field instead of SU(N) for NG bosons. The solution of auxiliary fields is trivial on the canonical branch of the auxiliary field equation, in which case our model results in a fourth-order derivative term that is not the Skyrme term. For the case of SL(2,C), we find explicitly a nontrivial solution to the algebraic auxiliary field equations that we call a non-canonical branch, which when substituted back into the Lagrangian gives a Skyrme-like model. If we restrict to a submanifold, where quasi-NG bosons are turned off, which is tantamount to restricting the Skyrme field to SU(2), then the fourth-order derivative term reduces exactly to the standard Skyrme term. Our model is the first example of a nontrivial auxiliary field solution in a multi-component model.

BPS pion domain walls in the supersymmetric chiral Lagrangian

We construct exact solutions of BPS pion domain walls in the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric SU(N) chiral Lagrangian with pion masses introduced via linear and quadratic superpotentials. The model admits N discrete vacua in the center of SU(N) for the linear superpotential. In addition to the latter, new vacua appear for the quadratic superpotential. We find that the domain wall solutions of pions (Nambu-Goldstone bosons) that interpolate between a pair of (pion) vacua preserve half of supersymmetry. Contrary to our expectations, we have not been able to find domain walls involving the quasi-Nambu-Goldstone bosons present in the theory, which in turn has the consequence that not all vacua of the theory are connected by a BPS domain wall solution.

Evolution and Statistics of Non-Sphericity of Dark Matter Halos from Cosmological N-Body Simulation

We revisit the non-sphericity of cluster-mass scale halos from cosmological N-body simulation on the basis of triaxial modelling. In order to understand the difference between the simulation results and the conventional ellipsoidal collapse model (EC), we first consider the evolution of individual simulated halos. The major difference between EC and the simulation becomes appreciable after the turn-around epoch. Moreover, it is sensitive to the individual evolution history of each halo. Despite such strong dependence on individual halos, the resulting nonsphericity of halos exhibits weak but robust mass dependence in a statistical fashion; massive halos are more spherical up to the turn-around, but gradually become less spherical by z = 0. This is clearly inconsistent with the EC prediction; massive halos are usually more spherical. In addition, at z=0, inner regions of the halos are less spherical than outer regions, i.e., the density distribution inside the halos is highly inhomogeneous and therefore not self-similar. Since most of previous fitting formulae for the PDF of axis ratio of triaxial ellipsoids have been constructed under the self-similarity assumption, they are not accurate. Indeed, we compute the PDF of projected axis ratio a1/a2 directly from the simulation data without the self-similarity assumption, and find that it is very sensitive to the assumption. The latter needs to be carefully taken into account in direct comparison with observations, and therefore we provide an empirical fitting formula for the PDF of a1/a2. Our preliminary analysis suggests that the derived PDF of a1/a2 roughly agrees with the current weak-lensing observations. More importantly, the present results will be useful in future exploration of the non-sphericity of clusters in X-ray and optical observations.

Projected Axis Ratios of Galaxy Clusters in the Horizon-AGN Simulation: Impact of Baryon Physics and Comparison with Observations

We characterize the non-sphericity of galaxy clusters by the projected axis ratio of spatial distribution of star, dark matter, and X-ray surface brightness (XSB). We select 40 simulated groups and clusters of galaxies with mass larger than 5E13 Msun from the Horizon simulation that fully incorporates the relevant baryon physics, in particular, the AGN feedback. We find that the baryonic physics around the central region of galaxy clusters significantly affects the non-sphericity of dark matter distribution even beyond the central region, approximately up to the half of the virial radius. Therefore it is very difficult to predict the the probability density function (PDF) of the projected axis ratio of XSB from dark-matter only N-body simulations as attempted in previous studies. Indeed we find that the PDF derived from our simulated clusters exhibits much better agreement with that from the observed X-ray clusters. This indicates that our present methodology to estimate the non-sphericity directly from the Horizon simulation is useful and promising. Further improvements in both numerical modeling and observational data will establish the non-sphericity of clusters as a cosmological test complementary to more conventional statistics based on spherically averaged quantities.

World-volume Effective Action of Exotic Five-brane in M-theory

We study the world-volume effective action of an exotic five-brane, known as the M-theory 5${}^3$-brane (M5${}^3$-brane) in eleven dimensions. The supermultiplet of the world-volume theory is the $\mathcal{N} = (2, 0)$ tensor multiplet in six dimensions. The world-volume action contains three Killing vectors $\hat{k}_{\hat{I}} {}^M \ (\hat{I} =1,2,3)$ associated with the $U(1)^3$ isometry. We find the effective T-duality rule for the eleven-dimensional backgrounds that transforms the M5-brane effective action to that of the M5${}^3$-brane. We also show that our action provides the source term for the M5${}^3$-brane geometry in eleven-dimensional supergravity

BPS Equations in Omega-deformed N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory

We study supersymmetry of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions deformed in the Omega-background. We take the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the background so that two-dimensional super Poincare symmetry is recovered. We compute the deformed central charge of the superalgebra and study the 1/2 and 1/4 BPS states. We obtain the Omega-deformed 1/2 and 1/4 BPS dyon equations from the deformed supersymmetry transformation and the Bogomol'nyi completion of the energy.

Classifying BPS States in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories Coupled to Higher Derivative Chiral Models

We study N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories coupled with higher derivative chiral models in four dimensions in the off-shell superfield formalism. We solve the equation of motion for the auxiliary fields and find two distinct on-shell structures of the Lagrangian that we call the canonical and non-canonical branches characterized by zero and non-zero auxiliary fields, respectively. We classify BPS states of the models in Minkowski and Euclidean spaces. In Minkowski space, we find Abelian and non-Abelian vortices, vortex-lumps (or gauged lumps with fractional lump charges) as 1/2 BPS states in the canonical branch and higher derivative generalization of vortices and vortex-(BPS)baby Skyrmions (or gauged BPS baby Skyrmions with fractional baby Skyrme charges) as 1/4 BPS states in the non-canonical branch. In four-dimensional Euclidean space, we find Yang-Mills instantons trapped inside a non-Abelian vortex, intersecting vortices, intersecting vortex-(BPS)baby Skyrmions as 1/4 BPS states in the canonical branch but no BPS states in the non-canonical branch other than those in the Minkowski space.

Confrontation of Top-Hat Spherical Collapse against Dark Halos from Cosmological N-Body Simulations

The top-hat spherical collapse model (TSC) is one of the most fundamental analytical frameworks to describe the non-linear growth of cosmic structure. TSC has motivated, and been widely applied in, various researches even in the current era of precision cosmology. While numerous studies exist to examine its validity against numerical simulations in a statistical fashion, there are few analyses to compare the TSC dynamics in an individual object-wise basis, which is what we attempt in the present paper. We extract 100 halos at z = 0 from a cosmological N-body simulation according to the conventional TSC criterion for the spherical over-density. Then we trace back their spherical counter-parts at earlier epochs. Just prior to the turn-around epoch of the halos, their dynamics is well approximated by TSC, but their turn-around epochs are systematically delayed and the virial radii are larger by ~ 20 percent on average relative to the TSC predictions. We find that this systematic deviation is mainly ascribed to the non-uniformity/inhomogeneity of dark matter density profiles and the non-zero velocity dispersions, both of which are neglected in TSC. In particular, the inside-out-collapse and shell-crossing of dark matter halos play an important role in generating the significant velocity dispersion. The implications of the present result are briefly discussed.

Hyper-Kähler with Torsion, T-duality, and Defect (p,q) Five-branes

We investigate a five-branes interpretation of hyper-Kähler geometry with torsion (HKT). This geometry is obtained by conformal transformation of the Taub-NUT space which represents a Kaluza-Klein five-brane. This HKT would represent an NS5-brane on the Taub-NUT space. In order to explore the HKT further, we compactify one transverse direction, and study the $O(2,2;{\mathbb Z}) = SL(2,{\mathbb Z}) \times SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$ monodromy structure associated with two-torus. Performing the conjugate transformation, we obtain a new solution whose physical interpretation is a defect $(p,q)$ five-brane on the ALG space. Throughout this analysis, we understand that the HKT represents a coexistent state of two kinds of five-branes. This situation is different from composite states such as $(p,q)$ five-branes or $(p,q)$ seven-branes in type IIB theory. We also study the T-dualized system of the HKT. We again find a new solution which also indicates another defect $(p,q)$ five-brane on the ALG space.

World-volume Effective Actions of Exotic Five-branes

We construct world-volume effective actions of exotic $5^2_2$-branes in type IIA and IIB string theories. The effective actions are given in fully space-time covariant forms with two Killing vectors associated with background isometries. The effective theories are governed by the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ tensor multiplet and $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ vector multiplet, respectively. Performing the S-duality transformation to the $5^2_2$-brane effective action in type IIB string theory, we also work out the world-volume action of the $5^2_3$-brane. We discuss some additional issues relevant to the exotic five-branes in type I and heterotic string theories.

BPS States in Supersymmetric Chiral Models with Higher Derivative Terms

We study the higher derivative chiral models with four supercharges and BPS states in these models. The off-shell Lagrangian generically includes higher powers of the auxiliary fields F which causes distinct on-shell branches associated with the solutions to the auxiliary fields equation. We point out that the model admits a supersymmetric completion of arbitrary higher derivative bosonic models of a single complex scalar field and an arbitrary scalar potential can be introduced even without superpotentials. As an example, we present a supersymmetric extension of the Faddeev-Skyrme model without four time derivatives, in contrast to the previously proposed supersymmetric Faddeev-Skyrme-like model containing four time derivatives. In general, higher derivative terms together with a superpotential result in deformed scalar potentials. We find that higher derivative corrections to 1/2 BPS domain walls and 1/2 BPS lumps are exactly canceled out while the 1/4 BPS lumps (as compact baby Skyrmions) depend on a characteristic feature of the higher derivative models. We also find a new 1/4 BPS condition for domain wall junctions which generically receives higher derivative corrections.

Higher Derivative Corrections to Manifestly Supersymmetric Nonlinear Realizations

When global symmetries are spontaneously broken in supersymmetric vacua, there appear quasi-Nambu-Goldstone (NG) fermions as superpartners of NG bosons. In addition to these, there can appear quasi-NG bosons in general. The quasi-NG bosons and fermions together with the NG bosons are organized into chiral multiplets. Kähler potentials of low-energy effective theories were constructed some years ago as supersymmetric nonlinear realizations. It is known that higher derivative terms in the superfield formalism often encounter with the auxiliary field problem; the auxiliary fields are acted by space-time derivatives and cannot be eliminated. In this paper, we construct higher derivative corrections to supersymmetric nonlinear realizations in the off-shell superfield formalism free from the auxiliary field problem. As an example, we present manifestly supersymmetric chiral Lagrangian.

Supersymmetry and R-symmetry Breaking in Meta-stable Vacua at Finite Temperature and Density

We study a meta-stable supersymmetry-breaking vacuum in a generalized O'Raifeartaigh model at finite temperature and chemical potentials. Fields in the generalized O'Raifeartaigh model possess different R-charges to realize R-symmetry breaking. Accordingly, at finite density and temperature, the chemical potentials have to be introduced in a non-uniform way. Based on the formulation elaborated in our previous work we study the one-loop thermal effective potential including the chemical potentials in the generalized O'Raifeartaigh model. We perform a numerical analysis and find that the R-symmetry breaking vacua, which exist at zero temperature and zero chemical potential, are destabilized for some parameter regions. In addition, we find that there are parameter regions where new R-symmetry breaking vacua are realized even at high temperature by the finite density effects.

Worldsheet Description of Exotic Five-brane with Two Gauged Isometries

We study the string worldsheet description of the background geometry of the exotic $5^2_2$-brane where two isometries are gauged. This is an extension of the gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) for the exotic $5^2_2$-brane with a single gauged isometry. The new GLSM with two gauged isometries has only ${\mathcal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetry rather than ${\mathcal N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetry of the original GLSM. This is caused by a conflict between two different $SU(2)_R$ associated with the two gauge symmetries. However, if we take a certain limit, we can find the genuine string sigma model of the background geometry of the exotic $5^2_2$-brane with ${\mathcal N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetry. We also investigate the worldsheet instanton corrections to the background geometry of the exotic $5^2_2$-brane. The worldsheet instanton corrections to the string sigma model can be traced in terms of the two gauge fields in the new GLSM. This new GLSM gives rise to a different feature of the quantum corrections from the one in the GLSM with the single gauged isometry.

A Thermal Field Theory with Non-uniform Chemical Potential

We investigate thermal one-loop effective potentials in multi-flavor models with chemical potentials. We study four-dimensional models in which each flavor have different global U(1) charges. Accordingly they have different chemical potentials. We call these "non-uniform chemical potentials," which are organized into a diagonal matrix μ. The mass matrix at a vacuum does not commute with μ. We find that the effective potential is divided into three parts. The first part is the Coleman-Weinberg potential. The UV divergence resides only in this part. The second is the correction to the Coleman-Weinberg potential that is independent of temperature, and the third depends on both temperature and μ. Our result is a generalization of the thermal potentials in previous studies for models with single and multi-flavors with (uniform) chemical potentials and reproduces all the known results correctly.

Exploring Hot Gas at Junctions of Galaxy Filaments with Suzaku

We performed five pointing observations with Suzaku to search for hot gases associated with the junctions of galaxy filaments where no significant diffuse X-ray sources were detected so far. We discovered X-ray sources successfully in all five regions and analyzed two bright sources in each field. Spectral analysis indicates that three sources originate from X-ray diffuse halos associated with optically bright galaxies or groups of galaxies with kT~0.6-0.8 keV. Other three sources are possibly group- and cluster-scale X-ray halos with temperatures of ~1 keV and ~4 keV, respectively while the others are compact object origins such as AGNs. All the three observed intracluster media within the junctions of the galaxy filaments previously found are involved in ongoing mergers. Thus, we demonstrate that deep X-ray observations at the filament junctions identified by galaxy surveys are a powerful mean to explore growing halos in a hierarchical structure undetected so far.

Validity of Hydrostatic Equilibrium in Galaxy Clusters from Cosmological Hydrodynamical Simulations

We examine the validity of the hydrostatic equilibrium (HSE) assumption for galaxy clusters using one of the highest-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We define and evaluate several effective mass terms corresponding to the Euler equations of the gas dynamics, and quantify the degree of the validity of HSE in terms of the mass estimate. We find that the mass estimated under the HSE assumption (the HSE mass) deviates from the true mass by up to ~ 30 %. This level of departure from HSE is consistent with the previous claims, but our physical interpretation is rather different. We demonstrate that the inertial term in the Euler equations makes a negligible contribution to the total mass, and the overall gravity of the cluster is balanced by the thermal gas pressure gradient and the gas acceleration term. Indeed the deviation from the HSE mass is well explained by the acceleration term at almost all radii. We also clarify the confusion of previous work due to the inappropriate application of the Jeans equations in considering the validity of HSE from the gas dynamics extracted from cosmological hydrodynamical simulations.

The pseudo moduli field is stabilized at one-loop order at zero temperature within some coupling parameter region. We analyze the behavior of the parameter space according to non-zero temperatures and find that the parameter region which allows $U(1)_R$ breaking is considerably extended at sufficiently low temperature, even though it shrinks down at high temperature as expected. Supersymmetric DBI inflation

We discuss a supersymmetric version of DBI (Dirac-Born-Infeld) inflation, which is a typical inflation model in string cosmology. The supersymmetric DBI action together with a superpotential always leads to correction terms associated with the potential into the kinetic term, which drastically change the dynamics of DBI inflation. We find two significant features of supersymmetric DBI inflation. The first one is that ultra-relativistic motion is prohibited to cause inflation, which leads to order of unity sound velocity squared and hence small non-Gaussianities of primordial curvature perturbations. The second one is that the relation between the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the field variation is modified. Then, significant tensor-to-scalar ratio $r \gtrsim 0.01$ is possible even for sub-Planck variation of the field. These new features are in sharp contrast with those of the standard non-supersymmetric DBI inflation and hence have a lot of interest implications on upcoming observations of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies by the Planck satellite as well as direct detection experiments of gravitational waves like DECIGO and BBO.

We study the relation between the ADHM construction of instantons in the Omega-background and the fractional D3/D(-1)-branes at the orbifold singularity of C \times C^2/Z_2 in Ramond-Ramond (R-R) 3-form field strength background. We calculate disk amplitudes of open strings connecting the D3/D(-1)-branes in certain R-R background to obtain the D(-1)-brane effective action deformed by the R-R background. We show that the deformed D(-1)-brane effective action agrees with the instanton effective action in the Omega-background.

Classification of BPS Objects in N = 6 Chern-Simons Matter Theory

We investigate BPS conditions preserving n/12 (n = 1,...,6) supersymmetries in the Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) model. The BPS equations are classified in terms of the number of preserved supercharges and remaining subgroups of the SU(4)_R symmetry. We study structures of a map between projection conditions for the supercharges in eleven dimensions and those in the ABJM model. The BPS configurations in the ABJM model can be interpreted as known BPS objects in eleven-dimensional Mtheory, such as intersecting M2, M5-branes, M-waves, KK-monopoles and M9-branes. We also show that these BPS conditions reduce to those in N = 8 super Yang-Mills theory via the standard D2-reduction procedure in a consistent way with the M-theory interpretation of the BPS conditions.

Impact of Chandra calibration uncertainties on galaxy cluster temperatures: application to the Hubble Constant

We perform a uniform, systematic analysis of a sample of 38 X-ray galaxy clusters with three different Chandra calibrations. The temperatures change systematically between calibrations. Cluster temperatures change on average by roughly ~6% for the smallest changes and roughly ~13% for the more extreme changes between calibrations. We explore the effects of the changing cluster spectral properties on Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) and X-ray determinations of the Hubble constant. The Hubble parameter changes by +10% and -13% between the current calibration and two previous Chandra calibrations, indicating that changes in the cluster temperature basically explain the entire change in H_0. Although this work focuses on the difference in spectral properties and resultant Hubble parameters between the calibrations, it is intriguing to note that the newer calibrations favor a lower value of the Hubble constant, H_0 ~ 60 km s-1 Mpc-1, typical of results from SZE/X-ray distances. Both galaxy clusters themselves and the details of the instruments must be known precisely to enable reliable precision cosmology with clusters, which will be feasible with combined efforts from ongoing observations and planned missions and observatories covering a wide range of wavelengths.

On Non-linear Action for Gauged M2-brane

We propose a non-linear extension of U(1) \times U(1) (abelian) ABJM model including T_{M2} (higher derivative) corrections. The action proposed here is expected to describe a single M2-brane proving C^4/Z_k target space. The model includes couplings with the 3-form background in the eleven-dimensional supergravity which is consistent with the orbifold projection. We show that the novel higgs mechanism proposed by Mukhi and Papageorgakis does work even in the presence of higher derivative corrections and couplings with the background field, giving the correct structure of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action with Wess-Zumino term for a D2-brane. We also find half BPS solutions in the full non-linear theory which is interpreted as an another M2-brane intersecting with the original M2-brane. A possible generalization to U(N) \times U(N) gauge group is briefly discussed.

Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking from Meta-stable Vacua in an N=1 Supersymmetric Gauge Theory

We investigate supersymmetry breaking meta-stable vacua in N=2, SU(2)\times U(1) gauge theory with N_f=2 massless flavors perturbed by the addition of small N=1 preserving mass terms in a presence of a Fayet-Iliopoulos term. We derive the low energy effective theory by using the exact results of N=2 supersymmetric QCD and examine the effective potential. At the classical level, the theory has supersymmetric vacua on Coulomb and Higgs branches. We find that supersymmetry on the Coulomb branch is dynamically broken as a consequence of the strong dynamics of SU(2) gauge symmetry while the supersymmetric vacuum on the Higgs branch remains. We also estimate the lifetimes of the local minima on the Coulomb branch. We find that they are sufficiently long and therefore the local vacua we find are meta-stable.

Deformation of N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory in Graviphoton Background

We study deformation of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory from type IIB superstrings with D3-branes in the constant R-R background. We compute disk amplitudes with one graviphoton vertex operator and investigate the zero-slope limit of the amplitudes. We obtain the effective action deformed by the graviphoton background, which contains the one defined in non(anti)commutative N=1 superspace as special case. The bosonic part of the Lagrangian gives the Chern-Simons term coupled with the R-R potential. We study the vacuum configuration of the deformed Lagrangian and find the fuzzy sphere configuration for scalar fields.

Non-equilibrium Ionization State of Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium

Time evolution of the ionization state of metals in the cosmic baryons is investigated in a cosmological context without the assumption of ionization equilibrium. We find that a significant fraction of ionized oxygen ions (OVII and OVIII) in the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) is not in the ionization equilibrium state at a redshift of z~0. We also investigate the effect on the detectability and observables of WHIM as a consequence of such deviation from ionization equilibrium. It is found that the detectability of WHIM is not altered very much both through its emission and absorption signatures, but line ratios between OVII and OVIII are significantly different from those in the ionization equilibrium state.

Soft X-ray Transmission Spectroscopy of Warm/Hot Intergalactic Medium with XEUS

We discuss the detectability of Warm/Hot Intergalactic medium (WHIM) via the absorption lines toward bright point sources with a future X-ray satellite mission, XEUS. While we consider bright QSOs as specific examples, the methodology can be applied to bright GRB afterglows. We create mock absorption spectra for bright QSOs (more than 20 QSOs over the all sky) using a light-cone output of a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. We assume that WHIM is under collisional and photo-ionization equilibrium. If WHIM has a constant metallicity of $Z=0.1Z_\odot$, approximately 2 O{\sc vii} absorption line system with $>3σ$ will be detected on average along a random line-of-sight toward bright QSOs up to $z=0.3$ for 30 ksec exposure.

Systematic bias in the estimate of cluster mass and the fluctuation amplitude from cluster abundance statistics

We revisit the estimate of the mass fluctuation amplitude, sigma_8, from the observational X-ray cluster abundance. In particular, we examine the effect of the systematic difference between the cluster virial mass estimated from the X-ray spectroscopy, M_{vir, spec}, and the true virial mass of the corresponding halo, M_{vir}. Mazzotta et al. (2004) recently pointed out the possibility that alpha_M = M_{vir, spec}/M_{vir} is systematically lower than unity. We perform the statistical analysis combining the latest X-ray cluster sample and the improved theoretical models and find that sigma_8 \sim 0.76 +/- 0.01 + 0.50 (1-alpha_M) for 0.5 \le alpha_M \le 1, where the quoted errors are statistical only. Thus if alpha_M \sim 0.7, the value of sigma_8 from cluster abundance alone is now in better agreement with other cosmological data including the cosmic microwave background, the galaxy power spectrum and the weak lensing data. The current study also illustrates the importance of possible systematic effects in mapping real clusters to underlying dark halos which changes the interpretation of cluster abundance statistics.

BPS-type equations in the non-anticommutative N=2 supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory

We investigate the equations of motion in the four-dimensional non-anticommutative N=2 supersymmetric U(1) gauge field theory, in the search for BPS configurations. The BPS-like equations, generalizing the abelian (anti)self-duality conditions, are proposed. We prove full solvability of our BPS-like equations, as well their consistency with the equations of motion. Certain restrictions on the allowed scalar field values are also found. Surviving supersymmetry is briefly discussed too.

SU(2)xU(1) non-anticommutative N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory

We derive the master function governing the component action of the four-dimensional non-anticommutative (NAC) and fully N=2 supersymmetric gauge field theory with a non-simple gauge group U(2)=SU(2)xU(1). We use a Lorentz singlet NAC-deformation parameter and an N=2 supersymmetric star (Moyal) product which do not break any of the fundamental symmetries of the undeformed N=2 gauge theory. The scalar potential in the NAC-deformed theory is calculated. We also propose the non-abelian BPS-type equations in the case of the NAC-deformed N=2 gauge theory with the SU(2) gauge group, and comment on the SU(3) case too. The NAC-deformed field theories can be thought of as the effective (non-perturbative) N=2 gauge field theories in a certain (scalar only) N=2 supergravity background.

Monte-Carlo Modeling of Non-Gravitational Heating Processes in Galaxy Clusters

We consider non-gravitational heating effects on galaxy clusters on the basis of the Monte-Carlo modeling of merging trees of dark matter halos combined with the thermal evolution of gas inside each halo. Under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium and the isothermal gas profiles, our model takes account of the metallicity evolution, metallicity-dependent cooling of gas, supernova energy feedback, and heating due to jets of radio galaxies in a consistent manner. The observed properties of galaxy clusters can be explained in models with higher non-gravitational heating efficiency than that in the conventional model. Possibilities include jet heating by the Fanaroff-Riley Type II radio galaxies, and the enhanced star formation efficiency and/or supernova energy feedback, especially at high redshifts.

Reliability of merger tree realizations of dark halos in the Monte-Carlo modeling of galaxy formation

We examine the reliability of the merger trees generated for the Monte-Carlo modeling of galaxy formation. In particular we focus on the cold gas fraction predicted from the merger trees with different assumptions on the progenitor distribution function, the timestep, and the mass resolution. We show that the cold gas fraction is sensitive to the accuracy of the merger trees at small-mass scales of progenitors at high redshifts. One can reproduce the Press-Schechter prediction to a reasonable degree by adopting a fairly large number of redshift bins, N_{step} ~ 1000 in generating merger trees, which is a factor of ten larger than the canonical value used in previous literature.

Scaling Relation to Understand Non-Detection of Cold Gas at the Cluster Center

Recent XMM-Newton observations of clusters of galaxies have indicated the soft X-ray spectra to be inconsistent with the simple isobaric cooling flow model. There is almost no feature of the cold gas expected from the model. This shows that we have not yet understood the physics of the hot gas in clusters of galaxies well. A quantitative evaluation of the behavior of gas cooling is important not only for understanding the clusters, themselves, but also for studying cosmology and galaxy formation. To clarify the problem of this reported discrepancy, we have studied scaling relations for clusters of galaxies based on the self-similarity assumption. We also propose an observational strategy to solve this problem.

Cosmological Implications of Number Counts of Clusters of Galaxies: logN-logS in X-Ray and Submm Bands

We compute the number counts of clusters of galaxies, the logN-logS relation, in several X-ray and submm bands on the basis of the Press-Schechter theory. We pay particular attention to a set of theoretical models which well reproduce the ROSAT 0.5-2 keV band logN-logS, and explore possibilities to further constrain the models from future observations with ASCA and/or at submm bands. The latter is closely related to the European PLANCK mission and the Japanese Large Millimeter and Submillimeter Array (LMSA) project. We exhibit that one can break the degeneracy in an acceptable parameter region on the $Ω_0 - σ_8$ plane by combining the ROSAT logN-logS and the submm number counts. Models which reproduce the ROSAT band logN-logS will have $N(>S) \sim (150-300) (S/10^{-12} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1})^{-1.3}$ str$^{-1}$ at $S > 10^{-12} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}$ in the ASCA 2-10 keV band, and $N(>S_ν) \sim (10^2-10^4) (S_ν/100 mJy)^{-1.5} str^{-1}$ at $S_ν> 100 mJy$ in the submm (0.85mm) band. The amplitude of the logN-logS is very sensitive to the model parameters in the submm band. We also compute the redshift evolution of the cluster number counts and compare with that of the X-ray brightest Abell-type clusters. The results, although still preliminary, point to low density ($Ω_0\sim 0.3$) universes. The contribution of clusters to the X-ray and submm background radiations is shown to be insignificant in any model compatible with the ROSAT logN-logS.

A New Method to Estimate Cosmological Parameters Using Baryon Fraction of Clusters of Galaxies

We propose a new method to estimate cosmological parameters using the baryon fraction of clusters of galaxies for a range of redshifts. The basic assumption is that the baryon fraction of clusters is constant, which is a reasonable assumption when it is averaged within a Mpc scale. We find that the baryon fraction vs. redshift diagram can estimate the cosmological parameters, since the derived value of the baryon fraction from observations depends on the adopted value of cosmological parameters. We also discuss some points in comparing theoretical calculations with observations.

Re-examination of the Hubble Constant from the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect: Implication for Cosmological Parameters

We performed a systematic and comprehensive estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich temperature decrement and the X-ray measurements for clusters up to the redshift $z=0.541$, with particular attention to its dependence on the density parameter $Ω_0$, and the cosmological constant $λ_0$. The resulting values of $H_0$ are largely consistent with that derived from the Cepheid distance for nearby galaxies. We discuss how the angular diameter distance $d_A$ vs. $z$ diagram from the accurate SZ measurements of high-$z$ clusters can distinguish the values of $Ω_0$ and $λ_0$.
