Eisenstein Quasimodes and QUE

We consider the question of Quantum Unique Ergodicity for quasimodes on surfaces of constant negative curvature, and conjecture the order of quasimodes that should satisfy QUE. We then show that this conjecture holds for Eisenstein series on the modular surface, extending results of Luo-Sarnak and Jakobson. Moreover, we observe that the equidistribution results of Luo-Sarnak and Jakobson extend to quasimodes of much weaker order--- for which QUE is known to fail on compact surfaces--- though in this scenario the total mass of the limit measures will decrease. We interpret this stronger equidistribution property in the context of arithmetic QUE, in light of recent joint work with E. Lindenstrauss on joint quasimodes.

Logarithmic-scale Quasimodes that do not Equidistribute

Given any compact hyperbolic surface $M$, and a closed geodesic on $M$, we construct of a sequence of quasimodes on $M$ whose microlocal lifts concentrate positive mass on the geodesic. Thus, the Quantum Unique Ergodicity (QUE) property does not hold for these quasimodes. This is analogous to a construction of Faure-Nonnenmacher-De Bièvre in the context of quantized cat maps, and lends credence to the suggestion that large multiplicities play a role in the known failure of QUE for certain "toy models" of quantum chaos. We moreover conjecture a precise threshold for the order of quasimodes needed for QUE to hold--- the result of the present paper shows that this conjecture, if true, is sharp.

Joint Quasimodes, Positive Entropy, and Quantum Unique Ergodicity

We study joint quasimodes of the Laplacian and one Hecke operator on compact congruence surfaces, and give conditions on the orders of the quasimodes that guarantee positive entropy on almost every ergodic component of the corresponding semiclassical measures. Together with the measure classification result of the second-named author, this implies Quantum Unique Ergodicity for such functions. Our result is optimal with respect to the dimension of the space from which the quasi-mode is constructed. We also study equidistribution for sequences of joint quasimodes of the two partial Laplacians on compact irreducible quotients of $\mathbb{H}\times\mathbb{H}$.

Partially Localized Quasimodes in Large Subspaces

We consider spaces of high-energy quasimodes for the Laplacian on a compact hyperbolic surface, and show that when the spaces are large enough, one can find quasimodes that exhibit strong localization phenomena. Namely, take any constant c, and a sequence of (cr_j)-dimensional spaces S_j of quasimodes, where 1/4+r_j^2 is an approximate eigenvalue for S_j. Then we can find a vector psi_j in each S_j, such that any weak-* limit point of the microlocal lifts of |psi_j|^2 localizes a positive proportion of its mass on a singular set of codimension 1. This result is sharp, in light of recent joint work with E. Lindenstrauss, proving QUE for certain joint quasimodes that include spaces of size o(r_j) with arbitrarily slow decay.

Graph Eigenfunctions and Quantum Unique Ergodicity

We apply the techniques of our previous paper to study joint eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and one Hecke operator on compact congruence surfaces, and joint eigenfunctions of the two partial Laplacians on compact quotients of $\mathbb{H}\times\mathbb{H}$. In both cases, we show that quantum limit measures of such sequences of eigenfunctions carry positive entropy on almost every ergodic component. Together with prior work of the second named author, this implies Quantum Unique Ergodicity for such functions.
