We show that certain groups of piecewise linear homeomorphims of the interval are invariably generated.
Let $Π_g$ be the surface group of genus $g$ ($g\geq2$), and denote by $\RR_{Π_g}$ the space of the homomorphisms from $Π_g$ into the group of the orientation preserving homeomorphisms of $S^1$. Let $2g-2=kl$ for some positive integers $k$ and $l$. Then the subset of $\RR_{Π_g}$ formed by those $φ$ which are semiconjugate to $k$-fold lifts of some homomorphisms and which have Euler number $eu(φ)=l$ is shown to be clopen. This leads to a new proof of the main result of Kathryn Mann \cite{Mann} from a completely different approach.
We study the dynamics of the geodesic and horocycle flows of the unit tangent bundle $(\hat M, T^1\mathcal{F})$ of a compact minimal lamination $(M,\mathcal F)$ by negatively curved surfaces. We give conditions under which the action of the affine group generated by the joint action of these flows is minimal, and examples where this action is not minimal. In the first case, we prove that if $\mathcal F$ has a leaf which is not simply connected, the horocyle flow is topologically transitive.
We shall show that the rotation of some irrational rotation number on the circle admits suspensions which are kinematic expansive.
We show that the horocycle flow associated with a foliation on a compact manifold by hyperbolic surfaces is minimal under certain conditions.
Large scale molecular dynamics simulations of freely decaying turbulence in three-dimensional space are reported. Fluid components are defined from the microscopic states by eliminating thermal components from the coarse-grained fields. The energy spectrum of the fluid components is observed to scale reasonably well according to Kolmogorov scaling determined from the energy dissipation rate and the viscosity of the fluid, even though the Kolmogorov length is of the order of the molecular scale.
Denote by $\DC(M)_0$ the identity component of the group of the compactly supported $C^r$ diffeomorphisms of a connected $C^\infty$ manifold $M$. We show that if $\dim(M)\geq2$ and $r\neq \dim(M)+1$, then any homomorphism from $\DC(M)_0$ to ${\Diff}^1(\R)$ or ${\Diff}^1(S^1)$ is trivial.
We show that the horocycle flows of open tight hyperbolic surfaces do not admit minimal sets.
We show that the equidistribution theorem of C. Bonatti and X. Gómez-Mont for a special kind of foliations by hyperbolic surfaces does not hold in general, and seek for a weaker form valid for general foliations by hyperbolic surfaces.
Denote by $\DC(M)_0$ the identity component of the group of compactly supported $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of a connected $C^\infty$ manifold $M$, and by $\HR$ the group of the homeomorphisms of $\R$. We show that if $M$ is a closed manifold which fibers over $S^m$ ($m\geq 2$), then any homomorphism from $\DC(M)_0$ to $\HR$ is trivial.
Let $\FF$ be a codimension one foliation on a closed manifold $M$ which admits a transverse dimension one Riemannian foliation. Then any continuous leafwise harmonic functions are shown to be constant on leaves.
We give a shorter proof of the following theorem of Kathryn Mann \cite{M}: the identity component of the group of the compactly supported $C^r$ diffeomorphisms of $\R^n$ cannot admit a nontrivial $C^p$-action on $S^1$, provided $n\geq2$, $r\neq n+1$ and $p\geq2$. We also give a new proof of another theorem of Mann: any nontrivial endomorphism of the group of the orientation preserving $C^r$ diffeomorphisms of the circle is the conjugation by a $C^r$ diffeomorphism, if $r\geq3$.
We consider an orientation preserving homeomorphism $h$ of $S^2$ which admits a repellor denoted $\infty$ and an attractor $-\infty$, which is not a North-South map, such that the basins of $\infty$ and $-\infty$ intersect. We study various aspects of the rotation number of $h:S^2\setminus\{\pm\infty\}\to S^2\setminus\{\pm\infty\}$, especially its relationship with the existence of periodic orbits.
Given any Liouville number $α$, it is shown that the nullity of the Hausdorff dimension of the invariant measure is generic in the space of the orientation preserving $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of the circle with rotation number $α$.
We show that there are no Anosov actions by (n-1)-dimensional unimodular Lie groups on closed n-dimensional manifolds.
We show that there are no normally contracting actions of unimodular Lie groups on closed manifolds.
This paper is concerned about the orbit equivalence types of $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of $S^1$ seen as nonsingular automorphisms of $(S^1,m)$, where $m$ is the Lebesgue measure. Given any Liouville number $α$, it is shown that each of the subspace formed by type ${\rm II}_1$, ${\rm II}_\infty$, ${\rm III}_λ$ ($λ>1$), ${\rm III}_\infty$ and ${\rm III}_0$ diffeomorphisms are $C^\infty$-dense in the space of the orientation preserving $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms with rotation number $α$.
The first half of this paper is concerned with the topology of the space $\AAA(M)$ of (not necessarily contact) Anosov vector fields on the unit tangent bundle $M$ of closed oriented hyperbolic surfaces $Σ$. We show that there are countably infinite connected components of $\AAA(M)$, each of which is not simply connected. In the second part, we study contact Anosov flows. We show in particular that the time changes of contact Anosov flows form a $C^1$-open subset of the space of the Anosov flows which leave a particular $C^\infty$ volume form invariant, if the ambiant manifold is a rational homology sphere.
Let $M$ be a closed oriented $C^\infty$ manifold and $f$ a $C^\infty$ Anosov diffeomorphism on $M$. We show that if $M$ is the two torus $T^2$, then $f$ is conjugate to a hyperbolic automorphism of $T^2$, either by a $C^\infty$ diffeomorphism or by a singular homeomorphism. We also show that for general $M$, if $f$ admits an absolutely continuous invariant measure $μ$, then $μ$ is a $C^\infty$ volume. The proofs are concatenations of well known results in the field.
Among the topological conjugacy classes of the continuous flows $\{ϕ^t\}$ whose orbit foliations are the planar Reeb foliation, there is one class called the standard Reeb flow. We show that $\{ϕ^t\}$ is conjugate to the standard Reeb flow if and only if $\{ϕ^t\}$ is conjugate to $\{ϕ^{λt}\}$ for any $λ>0$.
Let $f$ be an orientation preserving homeomorphism of $S^2$ which has a (nontrivial) continuum $X$ as a minimal set. Then there are exactly two connected components of $S^2\setminus X$ which are left invariant by $f$ and all the others are wandering. The Carathéodory rotation number of an invariant component is irrational.
Given any Liouville number $α$, it is shown that various subspaces are $C^\infty$-dense in the space of the orientation preserving $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of the circle with rotation number $α$.
We consider the rotation number $ρ(t)$ of a diffeomorphism $f_t=R_t\circ f$, where $R_t$ is the rotation by $t$ and $f$ is an orientation preserving $C^\infty$ diffeomorphism of the circle $S^1$. We shall show that if $ρ(t)$ is irrational $$\limsup_{t'\to t}(ρ(t')-ρ(t))/(t'-t)\geq 1.$$
We consider a fixed point free homeomorphsim $h$ of the closed band $B=\R\times[0,1]$ which leaves each leaf of a Reeb foliation on $B$ invariant. Assuming $h$ is the time one of various topological flows, we compare the restriction of the flows on the boundary.
We construct, for each irrational number $α$, a minimal $C^1$-diffeomorphism of the circle with rotation number $α$ which admits a measur
Let $f$ be a homeomorphism of the closed annulus $A$ isotopic to the identity, and let $X\subset {\rm Int}A$ be an $f$-invariant continuum which separates $A$ into two domains, the upper domain $U_+$ and the lower domain $U_-$. Fixing a lift of $f$ to the universal cover of $A$, one defines the rotation set $\tilde ρ(X)$ of $X$ by means of the invariant probabilities on $X$. For any rational number $p/q\in \tildeρ(X)$, $f$ is shown to admit a $p/q$ periodic point in $X$, provided that (1) $X$ consists of nonwandering points or (2) $X$ is an attractor and the frontiers of $U_-$ and $U_+$ coincides with $X$. Also the Carathéodory rotation numbers of $U_\pm$ are shown to be in $\tildeρ(X)$ for any separating invariant continuum $X$.
Given a harmonic measure of a hyperbolic lamination on a compact metric space, a positive harmonic function is defined on the universal cover of a typical leaves. We discuss some properties of this function. Especially if all the leaves are hyperbolic, ergodic harmonic measures are divided into two classes.
For any irrational number $α$, there exists an ergodic area preserving homeomorphism of the closed annulus which is isotopic to the identitity, admits no compact invariant set contained in the interior of the annulus, and has the rotation number $α$.
Heat conduction in a random packing of hard spheres is studied by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. We find a hard-sphere random packing shows higher thermal conductivity than a crystalline packing with same packing fraction. Under the same pressure, the random structure causes reduction of thermal conductivity by only 10% from crystalline packing, which is consistent with the experimental fact that amorphous materials can have high thermal conductivity which is comparable to that of crystals.
Let $f$ be a homeomorphism of the closed annulus $A$ isotopic to the identity, and let $X\subset {\rm Int}A$ be an $f$-invariant continuum which separates $A$ into two domains, the upper domain $U_+$ and the lower domain $U_-$. Fixing a lift of $f$ to the universal cover of $A$, one defines the rotation set $\tilde ρ(X)$ of $X$ by means of the invariant probabilities on $X$, as well as the prime end rotation number $\checkρ_\pm$ of $U_\pm$. The purpose of this paper is to show that $\checkρ_\pm$ belongs to $\tildeρ(X)$ for any separating invariant continuum $X$.
Relations between parameter rigidity of locally free Lie group actions on closed manifolds and the 1st leafwise cohomology of the orbit foliations are discussed. Some computational results of the leafwise cohomology are included.
A flow defined by a nonsingular smooth vector field $X$ on a closed manifold $M$ is said to be parameter rigid if given any real valued smooth function $f$ on $M$, there are a smooth funcion $g$ and a constant $c$ such that $f=X(g)+c$ holds. We show that the parameter rigid flows on closed orientable 3-manifolds are smoothly conjugate to Kronecker flows on the 3-torus with badly approximable slope.
We prove that a transversely equicontinuous minimal lamination on a locally compact metric space $Z$ has a transversely invariant Radon measure. Moreover if the space $Z$ is compact, then the tranversely invariant Radon measure is shown to be unique up to a scaling.
