A Scheme for Deterministic N-photon State Generation Using Lithium Niobate on Insulator Device

Large-photon-number quantum state is a fundamental but non-resolved request for practical quantum information applications. Here we propose an N-photon state generation scheme that is feasible and scalable, using lithium niobate on insulator circuits. Such scheme is based on the integration of a common building block called photon-number doubling unit (PDU), for deterministic single-photon parametric down-conversion and up-conversion. The PDU relies on 10^7-optical-quality-factor resonator and mW-level on-chip power, which is within the current fabrication and experiment limits. N-photon state generation schemes, with cluster and GHZ state as examples, are shown for different quantum tasks.

Maximal coin-walker entanglement in a ballistic quantum walk

We report the position-inhomogeneous quantum walk (IQW) can be utilized to produce the maximal high dimensional entanglement while maintaining the quadratic speedup spread of the wave-function. Our calculations show that the maximal coin-walker entanglement can be generated in any odd steps or asymptotically in even steps, and the nearly maximal entanglement can be obtained in even steps after $2$. We implement the IQW by a stable resource-saving time-bin optical network, in which a polarization Sagnac loop is employed to realize the precisely tunable phase shift. Our approach opens up an efficient way for high-dimensional entanglement engineering as well as promotes investigations on the role of coin-walker interactions in QW based applications.

Quantum teleportation mediated by surface plasmon polariton

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are collective excitations of free electrons propagating along a metal-dielectric interface. Although some basic quantum properties of SPPs, such as the preservation of entanglement, the wave-particle duality of a single plasmon, the quantum interference of two plasmons, and the verification of entanglement generation, have been shown, more advanced quantum information protocols have yet to be demonstrated with SPPs. Here, we experimentally realize quantum state teleportation between single photons and SPPs. To achieve this, we use polarization-entangled photon pairs, coherent photon-plasmon-photon conversion on a metallic subwavelength hole array, complete Bell-state measurements and an active feed-forward technique. The results of both quantum state and quantum process tomography confirm the quantum nature of the SPP mediated teleportation. An average state fidelity of 0.889$\pm$0.004 and a process fidelity of 0.820$\pm$0.005, which are well above the classical limit, are achieved. Our work shows that SPPs may be useful for realizing complex quantum protocols in a photonic-plasmonic hybrid quantum network.

Drone-based all-weather entanglement distribution

The quantum satellite is a cornerstone towards practical free-space quantum network and overcomes the photon loss over large distance. However, challenges still exist including real-time all-location coverage and multi-node construction, which may be complemented by the diversity of modern drones. Here we demonstrate the first drone-based entanglement distribution at all-weather conditions over 200 meters (test field limited), and the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt S-parameter exceeds 2.49, within 35 kg take-off weight. With symmetric transmitter and receiver beam apertures and single-mode-fiber-coupling technology, such progress is ready for future quantum network with multi-node expansion. This network can be further integrated in picture-drone sizes for plug-and-play local-area coverage, or loaded onto high-altitude drones for wide-area coverage, which adds flexibility while connecting to the existing satellites and ground fiber-based quantum network.

Compact source of narrow-band counterpropagating polarization-entangled photon pairs using a single dual-periodically poled crystal

We propose a scheme for the generation of counterpropagating polarization-entangled photon pairs from a dual-periodically poled crystal. Compared with the usual forward-wave type source, this source, in the backward-wave way, has a much narrower bandwidth. With a 2-cm-long bulk crystal, the bandwidths of the example sources are estimated to be 3.6 GHz, and the spectral brightnesses are more than 100 pairs/(s GHz mW). Two concurrent quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes in a single crystal enable our source to be compact and stable. This scheme does not rely on any state projection and applies to both degenerate and non-degenerate cases, facilitating applications of the entangled photons.

Enhanced sensing performance by the plasmonic analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency in active metamaterials

The gain-assisted plasmonic analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a metallic metamaterial is investigated for the purpose to enhance the sensing performance of the EIT-like plasmonic structure. The structure is composed of three bars in one unit, two of which are parallel to each other (dark quadrupolar element) but perpendicular to the third bar (bright dipolar element), The results show that, in addition to the high sensitivity to the refractive-index fluctuation of the surrounding medium, the figure of merit for such active EIT-like metamaterials can be greatly enhanced, which is attributed to the amplified narrow transparency peak.

Hybridization effect in coupled metamaterials

Although the invention of the metamaterials has stimulated the interest of many researchers and possesses many important applications, the basic design idea is very simple: composing effective media from many small structured elements and controlling its artificial EM properties. According to the effective-media model, the coupling interactions between the elements in metamaterials are somewhat ignored; therefore, the effective properties of metamaterials can be viewed as the "averaged effect" of the resonance property of the individual elements. However, the coupling interaction between elements should always exist when they are arranged into metamaterials. Sometimes, especially when the elements are very close, this coupling effect is not negligible and will have a substantial effect on the metamaterials' properties. In recent years, it has been shown that the interaction between resonance elements in metamaterials could lead to some novel phenomena and interesting applications that do not exist in conventional uncoupled metamaterials. In this paper, we will give a review of these recent developments in coupled metamaterials. For the "meta-molecule" composed of several identical resonators, the coupling between these units produces multiple discrete resonance modes due to hybridization. In the case of a "meta-crystal" comprising an infinite number of resonators, these multiple discrete resonances can be extended to form a continuous frequency band by strong coupling. This kind of broadband and tunable coupled metamaterial may have interesting applications. Many novel metamaterials and nanophotonic devices could be developed from coupled resonator systems in the future.

Plasmonically induced transparent magnetic resonance in a metallic metamaterial composed of asymmetric double bars

We demonstrate that the trapped magnetic resonance mode can be induced in an asymmetric double-bar structure for electromagnetic waves normally incident onto the double-bar plane, which mode otherwise cannot be excited if the double bars are equal in length. By adjusting the structural geometry, the trapped magnetic resonance becomes transparent with little resonance absorption when it happens in the dipolar resonance regime, a phenomenon so-called plasmonic analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency. Accordingly, the additional magnetic resonance by introducing asymmetry is explained as a result of nonlinear plasmon coupling.

Linear optical quantum computation with imperfect entangled photon-pair sources and inefficient non-photon-number-resolving detectors

We propose a scheme for efficient cluster state quantum computation by using imperfect polarization-entangled photon-pair sources, linear optical elements and inefficient non-photon-number-resolving detectors. The efficiency threshold for loss tolerance in our scheme requires the product of source and detector efficiencies should be >1/2 - the best known figure. This figure applies to uncorrelated loss. We further find that the loss threshold is unaffected by correlated loss in the photon pair source. Our approach sheds new light on efficient linear optical quantum computation with imperfect experimental conditions.

Optical loss compensation in a bulk left-handed metamaterial by the gain in quantum dots

A bulk left-handed metamaterial with fishnet structure is investigated to show the optical loss compensation via surface plasmon amplification, with the assistance of a Gaussian gain in PbS quantum dots. The optical resonance enhancement around 200 THz is confirmed by the retrieval method. By exploring the dependence of propagation loss on the gain coefficient and metamaterial thickness, we verify numerically that the left-handed response can endure a large propagation thickness with ultralow and stable loss under a certain gain coefficient.
