Leptonic Decays of Charged Pseudoscalar Mesons - 2015

We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and antiquark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The leptonic decay constants for $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ mesons can be obtained with controlled theoretical uncertainties and high precision from {\it ab initio} lattice-QCD simulations. The combination of experimental leptonic decay-rate measurements and theoretical decay-constant calculations enables the determination of several elements of the CKM matrix within the standard model. These determinations are competitive with those obtained from semileptonic decays, and also complementary because they are sensitive to different quark flavor-changing currents. They can also be used to test the unitarity of the first and second rows of the CKM matrix. Conversely, taking the CKM elements predicted by unitarity, one can infer "experimental" values for $f_P$ that can be compared with theory. These provide tests of lattice-QCD methods, provided new-physics contributions to leptonic decays are negligible at the current level of precision. This review is the basis of the article in the Particle Data Group's 2016 edition, updating the versions in Refs. [1-3].

Pentaquarks and Tetraquarks at LHCb

Exotic resonant structures found in $Λ^0_b$ and $\overline{B}^0$ decays into charmonium in the LHCb experiment are discussed. Examination of the $J/ψp$ system in $Λ^0_b\to J/ψK^- p$ decays shows two states each of which must be composed of $uudc\overline{c}$ quarks, and thus are called charmonium pentaquarks. Their masses are $4380\pm 8\pm 29$~MeV and $4449.8\pm 1.7\pm 2.5$~MeV, and their corresponding widths ($Γ$) are $205\pm 18\pm 86$ MeV, and $39\pm 5\pm 19$ MeV. The preferred $J^P$ assignments are of opposite parity, with one state having spin 3/2 and the other 5/2. Models of internal binding of the pentaquark states are discussed. Finally, another mesonic state is discussed, the $Z(4430)^-$ that decays into $ψ' π^-$ and was first observed by the Belle collaboration in $B^0\to ψ' K^+π^-$ decays. Using a sample of approximately 25,000 signal events, LHCb determines the $J^{P}$ to be $1^{+}$.

Lifetimes of some $b$-flavored hadrons

Recent measurements of lifetimes of some $b$-flavored hadrons are presented and interpreted in the context of theoretical models, especially the Heavy Quark Expansion. Decay widths and decay width differences in the $B_s^0-\overline{B}_s^0$ system are discussed from studies of decays into the final states $J/ψK^+K^-$, $J/ψπ^+π^-$, $D_s^+D_s^-$, $K^+K^-$, and $D_s^{\pm}π^{\mp}$. Lifetime measurements of the baryons $Λ_b^0$, $Ξ_b^-$, $Ξ_b^0$, and $Ω_b^-$ are also shown.

Method of Studying $Λ_b^0$ decays with one missing particle

A new technique is discussed that can be applied to $Λ_b^0$ baryon decays where decays with one missing particle can be discerned from background and their branching fractions determined, along with other properties of the decays. Applications include measurements of the CKM elements $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$, selected charmless decays, and detection of any exotic objects coupling to $b\to s$ decays, such as the inflaton.

Leptonic Decays of Charged Pseudoscalar Mesons - 2013

We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and antiquark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The interplay between theory and experiment is different for each particle. Theoretical predictions of $f_B$ that are needed in the $B$ sector can be tested by measuring $f_{D^+}$ and $f_{D_s^+}$ in the charm sector. The lighter $π^{\pm}$ and $K^{\pm}$ mesons provide stringent comparisons between experiment and theory due to the accuracy of both the measurements and the theoretical predictions. An abridged version of this review was prepared for the Particle Data Group's 2014 edition \cite{Previous}.

New physics from flavour

I report on investigations of physics beyond the Standard Model using experiments designed to investigate $b$ quark and $c$ quark interactions. Generalized searches involving loop diagrams using heavy meson mixing and CP violation experiments imply limits on New Physics (NP) at large scales from 100-100,000 TeV. There are ways of avoiding these limits, but satisfying their requirements puts severe restrictions on NP properties. Specific constraints on NP models are discussed from individual measurements including b-> s gamma, Bs->mu+ mu-, B0 -> K* l+ l-, and CP violation in the B0 and Bs systems. Hints of deviations from Standard Model predictions from other decays including B- -> tau- nu, and B->D(*)tau- nu$\ are investigated. Finally, searches for dark matter and Majorana neutrinos are reviewed.

Time-dependent Dalitz-plot formalism for B_q -> J/ψ h+ h-

A formalism for measuring time-dependent CP violation in B_q -> J/ψh+ h- decays with J/ψ-> mu+ mu- is developed for the general case where there can be many h+ h- final states of different angular momentum present. Here h refers to any spinless meson. The decay amplitude is derived using similar considerations as those in a Daltiz like analysis of three-body spinless mesons taking into account the fact that the J/ψis spin-1, and the various interferences allowed between different final states. Implementation of this procedure can, in principle, lead to the use of a larger number of final states for CP violation studies.

Use of B->J/ψf0 decays to discern the q anti-q or tetraquark nature of scalar mesons

We consider the relative decay rates of B0 and Bs mesons into a Jψ plus a light scalar meson either the f0(500) (σ) or the f0(980). We show that it is possible to distinguish between the quark content of the scalars being quark-antiquark or tetraquark by measuring specific ratios of decay rates. Using current data we determine the ratio of form-factors in Bs->Jψf0(980) with respect to B0->Jψf0(500) decays to be 1.02(+0.14, -0.04) at a four-momentum transfer squared equal to the mass of the Jψ meson squared. In the case where these light mesons are considered to be quark-antiquark states, we give a determination of the mixing angle between strange and light quark states of less than 28 degrees at 90% confidence level. We also discuss the use of a similar ratio to investigate the structure of other isospin singlet states.

Heavy Flavor Physics

The main purpose of Heavy Flavor experiments is to discover physics beyond the Standard Model, or characterize it, should it be found elsewhere. Thus, current limits on New Physics (NP) are reviewed. New results are presented, some involving processes that could show NP even with current data. Specific topics include the CKM element |Vub|, the forward-backward asymmetry in B -> K* mu+ mu-, b-hadron fractions at the LHC, B(Bs -> mu+ mu-), first observations of several Bs and Bc decay modes, the X(4140), new b-baryons and their decays, searches for Majorana neutrinos, and Lepton Flavor Violation.

Top LHCb Physics

We suggest that top physics can be studied at the LHCb experiment, and that top production could be observed. Since LHCb covers a large pseudorapidity region in the forward direction, it has unique abilities to probe new physics in the top sector. Furthermore, we demonstrate that LHCb may be able to measure a t\bar t production rate asymmetry, and thus indirectly probe an anomalous forward backward t\bar t asymmetry in the forward region; a possibility suggested by the enhanced forward-backward asymmetry reported by the CDF experiment.

S-waves and the extraction of beta_s

The CP Violating asymmetry in Bs mixing (beta_s) is one of the most promising measurements where physics beyond the Standard Model could be revealed. As such, analyses need to be subjected to great scrutiny. The mode Bs -> J/psiϕhas been used, and the mode Bs -> ϕϕproposed for future measurements. These modes both have two vector particles in the final state and thus angular analyses must be used to disentangle the contributions from CP+ and CP- configurations. The angular distributions, however, could be distorted by the presence of S-waves masquerading as low mass K+K- pairs, that could result in erroneous values of beta_s. The S-waves could well be the result of a final state formed from an s-quark anti-s-quark pair in a 0+ spin-parity state, such as the f0(980) meson. Data driven and theoretical estimates of the Bs decay rate into the CP+ final state J/psi f0(980) are given, when f0 -> pi+pi-. The S-wave contribution in Jψϕshould be taken into account when determining beta_s by including a K+K- S-wave amplitude in the fit. This may change the central value of current results and will also increase the statistical uncertainty. Importantly, the J/psi f0(980) mode has been suggested as an alternative channel for measuring beta_s.

Model Independent Methods for Determining B(Y(5S)->Bs^{(*)} anti-B}_s^{(*)})$

We describe a method that provides a model independent measurement of the Bs fraction in Y(5S) resonance decays, fs, using the relative rates of like-sign versus opposite sign dileptons; the like-sign leptons result from B^0 and Bs mixing. In addition, we show that determining the rates of single, double and triple Ds mesons provides an alternative way of finding fs.

S-waves and the Measurement of CP Violating Phases in Bs Decays

Heavy, as yet undiscovered particles, can affect measurements of CP violation in the B system. Measuring CP violation in the Bs system provides an excellent place to observe such effects since Standard Model sources are predicted to produce very small effects. The angle -2beta_s, the "phase of Bs-\bar{B}s mixing," thought to be best measured in Bs -> J/psiϕdecays is of order -0.04, while the CP violating asymmetry in Bs -> ϕϕis predicted to be zero, due to the cancellation of the mixing phase with the decay phase. Recent measurements of β_s in J/psiϕ, while not definitive, are much larger than the Standard Model predictions. Measurements in the B^o and Ds+ systems of analogous modes point toward a 5-10% contamination of S-wave K+K- under the ϕpeak. This S-wave was not taken into account in these recent analyses. Furthermore this S-wave can also materialize as a f0(980) meson that decays to π+π-, making the final state J/psi f0 useful for measuring β_s with the added advantage of not requiring an angular analysis. Rate estimates, while not precise, predict four to five times fewer such events than those in the J/psiϕmode. The error on β_s, however, may be similar. We also remark on S-wave problems with the Bs -> ϕϕmode, and possible systematic checks using Bs -> ϕf0.

Future B Experiments from The BTeV/LHC-b Perspective

Many measurements are necessary in the program of studying mixing, CP violation and rare decays of b and c quarks. These measurements require large numbers of B^o, B_s, B^- and D^{*+} hadrons. Fortunately, copius production of particles containing b and c quarks will occur at Tevatron and the LHC. The crucial measurements are described here, as well as the design of the two experiments, LHC-b and BTeV, that can exploit the 4-20 x 10^{11} b hadrons produced every 10^7 seconds.

Future of Heavy Flavour Physics: Experimental Perspective

I discuss what measurements need to be done to search for physics beyond the Standard CKM model, rather than just what studies can be done in the near future. It is also important to accurately measure the CKM matrix elements. Current best estimates for two important elements are: |V_{cb}|=0.0381 +/- 0.0021 and |V_{ub}/V_{cb}|=0.085 +/- 0.019. Finally, future experiments are discussed.

The Btev Program

A brief description is given of BTeV a proposed program at the Fermilab collider sited at the C0 intersection region. The main goals are measurement of mixing, CP violation and rare decays in both the $b$ and charm systems. The detector is a two arm forward-backward spectrometer capable of triggering on detached vertices and dileptons, and possessing excellent particle identification, electron, photon and muon detection.

Prospects for B-Physics in the Next Decade

In these lectures I review what has been learned from studies of b-quark decays, including semileptonic decays ($V_{ub}$ and $V_{cb}$), $B^o-\overline{B}^o$ mixing and rare B decays. Then a discussion on CP violation follows, which leads to a summary of plans for future experiments and what is expected to be learned from them.
