A Rindler Road to Carrollian Worldsheets

The tensionless limit of string theory has recently been formulated in terms of worldsheet Rindler physics. In this paper, by considering closed strings moving in background Rindler spacetimes, we provide a concrete exemplification of this phenomenon. We first show that strings probing the near-horizon region of a generic non-extremal blackhole become tensionless thereby linking a spacetime Carroll limit to a worldsheet Carroll limit. Then, considering strings in $d$-dimensional Rindler spacetime we find a Rindler structure induced on the worldsheet. Novelties, including folds, appear on the closed string worldsheet pertaining to the formation of the worldsheet horizon. The closed string becomes segmented at these folding points and different segments go into the formation of closed strings in the different Rindler wedges. The Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) or the Conformal Carroll algebra emerges from the closed string Virasoro algebra as the horizon is hit. Quantum states on these accelerated worldsheets are discussed and we show the formation of boundary states from gluing conditions of the different segments of the accelerated closed string.

Rindler on the Worldsheet

We construct the tensionless limit of bosonic string theory in terms of a family of worldsheets with increasing acceleration and show that the null string emerges in the limit of infinite acceleration when the Rindler horizon is hit. We discover a novel phenomenon we call null string complementarity, which gives two distinct observer dependent pictures of the emergence of open string physics from closed strings in the tensionless limit. The closed string vacuum as observed by the inertial worldsheet turns into a D-instanton in the tensionless limit, while in the complementary picture from the accelerated worldsheet one sees the emergence of a D-25 brane. We finally discuss approaching the Rindler horizon through time evolution at constant acceleration and also show how an open string picture arises very naturally.

A Tale of Three. Tensionless strings and vacuum structure

Within the premise of canonical quantisation, we re-examine the quantum structure of bosonic tensionless string theory. In the classical theory, the worldsheet metric degenerates and the Bondi-Metnzer-Sachs (BMS) algebra arises as the residual symmetries on fixing the tensionless equivalent of the conformal gauge. In the quantum regime, we find, on careful examination, that there are multiple ways to impose constraints to restrict the physical Hilbert space, which in turn lead to three distinct choices of tensionless vacua. We analyse these vacua in detail, commenting on various aspects like the central charges and the spectrum around each of them.

Dirac fermion, cosmological event horizons and quantum entanglement

We discuss the field quantisation of a free massive Dirac fermion in the two causally disconnected static patches of the de Sitter spacetime, by using mode functions that are normalisable on the cosmological event horizon. Using this, we compute the entanglement entropy of the vacuum state corresponding to these two regions, for a given fermionic mode. Further extensions of this result to more general static spherically symmetric and stationary axisymmetric spacetimes are discussed. For the stationary axisymmetric Kerr-de Sitter spacetime in particular, the variations of the entanglement entropy with respect to various eigenvalues and spacetime parameters are depicted numerically. We also comment on such variations when instead we consider the non-extremal black hole event horizon of the same spacetime.

Effect of back reaction on entanglement and subregion volume complexity in strongly coupled plasma

The back reaction imparted by a uniform distribution of heavy static fundamental quarks on large $N_c$ strongly coupled gauge theory can be holographically realized as a deformation in $AdS$ blackhole background. The presence of back reaction brings significant changes in to the entanglement structure of the strongly coupled boundary theory at finite temperature. Since the deformed blackhole geometry still remains asymptotically $AdS$, the $gauge/gravity$ duality allows us to explore the entanglement structure of back reacted plasma in a quantitative way by computing various measures, e.g holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and entanglement wedge cross section (EWCS). We explicitly study the variation of those entanglement measures with respect to the uniform density of heavy static fundamental quarks present in the boundary theory. In particular, we notice enhancement of both HEE and EWCS with respect to quark density. We also study the effect of back reaction on the holographic subregion volume complexity. In this analysis we observe an occurrence of logarithmic divergence proportional to the quark density parameter.

Exotic Origins of Tensionless Superstrings

A new type of tensionless superstring theory, called the Inhomogeneous tensionless superstring, has been recently introduced. This is characterised by a residual symmetry algebra on the worldsheet richer in structure than the previously known symmetry algebra related to Homogeneous tensionless superstring. In this paper, we investigate theories of tensile superstring that the Inhomogeneous tensionless superstring with manifestly real fermions could arise from. We provide two different candidates for these parent tensile theories. The nature of the limit dictates that these theories have some exotic features.

High temperature behavior of non-local observables in boosted strongly coupled plasma: A holographic study

In this work, we perform a holographic analysis to study non local observables associated to a uniformly \textit{boosted} strongly coupled large $N$ thermal plasma in $d$-dimensions. In order to accomplish the holographic analysis, the appropriate dual bulk theory turns out to be $d+1$ dimensional \textit{boosted} AdS-Schwarzschild blackhole background. In particular, we compute entanglement entropy of the boosted plasma at high temperature living inside a strip geometry with entangling width $l$ in the boundary at a particular instant of time. We also study the two-point correlators in the boundary by following geodesic approximation method. For analyzing the effect of boosting on the thermal plasma and correspondingly on both non local observables, we keep the alignment of the width of region of interest both parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the boost. We find our results significantly modified compared to those in un-boosted plasma up to the quadratic order of the boost velocity $v$. More interestingly, the relative orientation of the boost and the entangling width plays a crucial role to quantify the holographic entanglement entropy in the boundary theory. The breaking of rotational symmetry in the boundary theory due to the boosting of the plasma along a specific flat direction causes this interesting feature.

Back reaction effects on the dynamics of heavy probes in heavy quark cloud

We holographically study the effect of back reaction on the hydrodynamical properties of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ strongly coupled super Yang-Mills (SYM) thermal plasma. The back reaction we consider arises from the presence of static heavy quarks uniformly distributed over $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM plasma. In order to study the hydrodynamical properties, we use heavy quark as well as heavy quark-antiquark bound state as probes and compute the jet quenching parameter, screening length and binding energy. We also consider the rotational dynamics of heavy probe quark in the back-reacted plasma and analyse associated energy loss. We observe that the presence of back reaction enhances the energy-loss in the thermal plasma. Finally, we show that there is no effect of angular drag on the rotational motion of quark-antiquark bound state probing the back reacted thermal plasma.

Tensionless Superstrings: View from the Worldsheet

In this brief note, we show that the residual symmetries that arise in the analysis of the tensionless superstrings in the equivalent of the conformal gauge is (a trivial extension of) the recently discovered 3d Super Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra, discussed in the context of asymptotic symmetries of 3d Supergravity in flat-spacetimes. This helps us uncover a limiting approach to the construction of the tensionless superstring from the point of view of the worldsheet, analogous to the one we had adopted earlier for the closed tensionless bosonic string.

Tensionless Strings from Worldsheet Symmetries

We revisit the construction of the tensionless limit of closed bosonic string theory in the covariant formulation in the light of Galilean conformal symmetry that rises as the residual gauge symmetry on the tensionless worldsheet. We relate the analysis of the fundamentally tensionless theory to the tensionless limit that is viewed as a contraction of worldsheet coordinates. Analysis of the quantum regime uncovers interesting physics. The degrees of freedom that appear in the tensionless string are fundamentally different from the usual string states. Through a Bogoliubov transformation on the worldsheet, we link the tensionless vacuum to the usual tensile vacuum. As an application, we show that our analysis can be used to understand physics of strings at very high temperatures and propose that these new degrees of freedom are naturally connected with the long-string picture of the Hagedorn phase of free string theory. We also show that tensionless closed strings behave like open strings.

Brownian motion in strongly coupled, anisotropic Yang-Mills plasma: A holographic approach

We employ methods of gauge/string duality to analyze the Brownian motion and the concomitant Langevin equation of a heavy quark in a strongly coupled, thermal, anisotropic Yang-Mills plasma. We consider fluctuations both along and perpendicular to the direction of anisotropy and study the effects of anisotropy on the drag coefficient, the diffusion constant and the Langevin coefficient for both the directions. We also verify the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for Brownian motion in an anisotropic medium.

Schwinger Effect and Negative Differential Conductivity in Holographic Models

The consequences of the Schwinger effect for conductivity is computed for strong coupling systems using holography. The one loop diagram on the flavor brane introduces an $O({λ\over N_c})$ imaginary part in the effective action for a Maxwell flavor gauge field. This in turn introduces a real conductivity in an otherwise insulating phase of the boundary theory. Moreover in certain regions of parameter space the differential conductivity is negative. This is computed in the context of the Sakai-Sugimoto model.

Some aspects of QGP phase in a hQCD model

We continue to study the holographic QCD (hQCD) model, proposed in a previous paper, in an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) system. In this paper we discuss some aspects of quark gluon plasma (QGP) in the hQCD model, such as drag force, jet quenching parameter and screening length. The results turn out to be consistent with those as expected in QCD qualitatively. By calculating free energy of the background black hole solution, we find that there exists a Hawking-Page phase transition between small black hole and big black hole when chemical potential $μ$ is less than a critical one $ μ_c$, and the phase transition is absent when chemical potential is beyond the critical one.

Correlators of Giant Gravitons from dual ABJ(M) Theory

We generalize the operators of ABJM theory, given by Schur polynomials, in ABJ theory by computing the two point functions in the free field and at finite $(N_1,N_2)$ limits. These polynomials are then identified with the states of the dual gravity theory. Further, we compute correlators among giant gravitons as well as between giant gravitons and ordinary gravitons through the corresponding correlators of ABJ(M) theory. Finally, we consider a particular non-trivial background produced by an operator with an $\cal R$-charge of $O(N^2)$ and find, in presence of this background, due to the contribution of the non-planar corrections, the large $(N_1,N_2)$ expansion is replaced by $1/(N_1+M)$ and $1/(N_2+M)$ respectively.

Dissipative force on an external quark in heavy quark cloud

Within the finite temperature N = 4 strongly coupled super Yang- Mills, we compute the dissipative force on an external quark in the presence of evenly distributed heavy quark cloud. This is computed holographically by constructing the corresponding gravity dual. We study the behaviour of this force as a function of the cloud density. Along the way we also analyze the stability of the gravity dual for vector and tensor perturbations.

Proof of universality of electrical conductivity at finite chemical potential

It was proposed in arXiv:1008.2944 that, for certain gauge theories with gravity duals, electrical conductivity at finite chemical potential is universal. Here we provide a general proof that, when matter stress tensor satisfies a compact constraint, electrical conductivity is universal. We further elaborate our result with several conformal as well as non-conformal gauge theories. We also discuss how boundary conductivity and universal conductivity of stretched horizon are related.

Some BPS configurations of the BLG Theory

We obtain BPS configurations of the BLG theory and its variant including mass terms for scalars and fermions in addition to a background field with different world-volume and R-symmetries. Three cases are considered, with world-volume symmetries SO(1,1) and SO(2) and preserving different amounts of supersymmetry. In the former case we obtain a singular configuration preserving N=(3,3) supersymmetry and an one-quarter BPS configuration corresponding to intersecting M2-M5-M5-branes. In the latter instance the BPS equations are reduced to those in the self-dual Chern-Simons theory with two complex scalars. In want of an exact solution, we find a topological vortex solution numerically in this case. Other solutions are given by combinations of domain walls.

Moduli and BPS configurations of the BLG theory

We study the moduli space of scalars in the BLG theory with and without a constant background four-form field. The classical vacuum moduli space is sixteen-dimensional in the absence of the four-form field. In its presence, however, the moduli space of BPS configurations may be reduced in dimension. We exemplify this with a BPS configuration having $SO(1,2)$ world-volume symmetry and $SO(4) \times SO(4)$ R-symmetry in the presence of a four-form field, by constructing an explicit solution.
