Lightweight Deep Learning-Based Channel Estimation for RIS-Aided Extremely Large-Scale MIMO Systems on Resource-Limited Edge Devices

Next-generation wireless technologies such as 6G aim to meet demanding requirements such as ultra-high data rates, low latency, and enhanced connectivity. Extremely Large-Scale MIMO (XL-MIMO) and Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) are key enablers, with XL-MIMO boosting spectral and energy efficiency through numerous antennas, and RIS offering dynamic control over the wireless environment via passive reflective elements. However, realizing their full potential depends on accurate Channel State Information (CSI). Recent advances in deep learning have facilitated efficient cascaded channel estimation. However, the scalability and practical deployment of existing estimation models in XL-MIMO systems remain limited. The growing number of antennas and RIS elements introduces a significant barrier to real-time and efficient channel estimation, drastically increasing data volume, escalating computational complexity, requiring advanced hardware, and resulting in substantial energy consumption. To address these challenges, we propose a lightweight deep learning framework for efficient cascaded channel estimation in XL-MIMO systems, designed to minimize computational complexity and make it suitable for deployment on resource-constrained edge devices. Using spatial correlations in the channel, we introduce a patch-based training mechanism that reduces the dimensionality of input to patch-level representations while preserving essential information, allowing scalable training for large-scale systems. Simulation results under diverse conditions demonstrate that our framework significantly improves estimation accuracy and reduces computational complexity, regardless of the increasing number of antennas and RIS elements in XL-MIMO systems.

Enhanced IoT Batteryless D2D Communications Using Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Recent research on reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) suggests that the RIS panel, containing passive elements, enhances channel performance for the internet of things (IoT) systems by reflecting transmitted signals to the receiving nodes. This paper investigates RIS panel assisted-wireless network to instigate minimal base station (BS) transmit power in the form of energy harvesting for batteryless IoT sensors to maximize bits transmission in the significant multi-path environment, such as urban areas. Batteryless IoT sensors harvest energy through the RIS panel from external sources, such as from nearby BS radio frequency (RF) signal in the first optimal time frame, for a given time frame. The bits transmission among IoT sensors, followed by a device-to-device (D2D) communications protocol, is maximized using harvested energy in the final optimal time frame. The bits transmission is at least equal to the number of bits sampled by the IoT sensor. We formulate a non-convex mixed-integer non-linear problem to maximize the number of communicating bits subject to energy harvesting from BS RF signals, RIS panel energy consumption, and required time. We propose a robust solution by presenting an iterative algorithm. We perform extensive simulation results based on the 3GPP Urban Micro channel model to validate our model.

Cognitive IoT based Health Monitoring Scheme using Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

It has become very essential to address the limited spectrum capacity and their efficient utilization to support the increasing number of Internet of Things devices. When it comes to medical infrastructure, it becomes very imperative for medical devices to communicate with the base station. In such situations, communication over the wireless medium must provide optimized throughput (data rate) with effectual energy usage, which will ensure precise medical feedback by the responsible staff. Taking into account, it is necessary to operate wireless communication precisely at a higher frequency with more substantial bandwidth and low latency. Cognitive Radio (CR) is traditionally a viable choice, where it identifies and utilizes the vacant spectrum, thus maximizing the primary user's capacity and achieving spectral efficiency. To ensure such outcomes, the Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) techniques have proven to deliver an effective solution to the increasing number of devices with unimpaired performance, especially when the communication shifts towards a higher frequency band such as the mmWave band. In this chapter, IoT based CR network in uplink communication is proposed alongside employing NOMA techniques for optimal throughput, and energy efficiency for a medical infrastructure. Numerical results show that effectual throughput and energy efficiency for a High Reliable Communication (HRC) device and Moderate Reliable Communication (MRC) device improve over 83.13% and 73.95%, respectively and their corresponding energy efficacy values show vast improvement (83.11% and 73.96% respectively). Likewise, for interference case both the throughput and the energy efficiency improve approximately over 93% for all devices.

Radio Resource Management Based on Reused Frequency Allocation for Dynamic Channel Borrowing Scheme in Wireless Networks

In the modern era, cellular communication consumers are exponentially increasing as they find the system more user-friendly. Due to enormous users and their numerous demands, it has become a mandate to make the best use of the limited radio resources that assures the highest standard of Quality of Service (QoS). To reach the guaranteed level of QoS for the maximum number of users, maximum utilization of bandwidth is not only the key issue to be considered, rather some other factors like interference, call blocking probability etc. are also needed to keep under deliberation. The lower performances of these factors may retrograde the overall cellular networks performances. Keeping these difficulties under consideration, we propose an effective dynamic channel borrowing model that safeguards better QoS, other factors as well. The proposed scheme reduces the excessive overall call blocking probability and does interference mitigation without sacrificing bandwidth utilization. The proposed scheme is modeled in such a way that the cells are bifurcated after the channel borrowing process if the borrowed channels have the same type of frequency band (i.e. reused frequency). We also propose that the unoccupied interfering channels of adjacent cells can also be inactivated, instead of cell bifurcation for interference mitigation. The simulation endings show satisfactory performances in terms of overall call blocking probability and bandwidth utilization that are compared to the conventional scheme without channel borrowing. Furthermore, signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) level, capacity, and outage probability are compared to the conventional scheme without interference mitigation after channel borrowing that may attract the considerable concentration to the operators.
