Light-Front Transverse Momentum Distributions for ${\cal J}$=1/2 Hadronic Systems in Valence Approximation

The semi-inclusive correlator for a ${\cal J}$=1/2 bound-system, composed by A spin-1/2 fermions, is linearly expressed in terms of the light-front Poincaré covariant spin-dependent spectral function, in valence approximation. The light-front spin-dependent spectral function is fully determined by six scalar functions that allow for a complete description of the six T-even transverse-momentum distributions, suitable for a detailed investigation of the dynamics inside the bound system. The application of the developed formalism to a case with a sophisticated dynamical content, like $^3$He, reaches two goals: (i) to illustrate a prototype of an investigation path for gathering a rich wealth of information on the dynamics and also finding valuable constraints to be exploited from the phenomenological standpoint; (ii) to support for the three-nucleon system a dedicated experimental effort for obtaining a detailed 3D picture in momentum space. In particular, the orbital-angular momentum decomposition of the bound state can be studied through the assessment of relations among the transverse-momentum distributions, as well as the relevance of the relativistic effect generated by the implementation of macrocausality. A fresh evaluation of the longitudinal and transverse polarizations of the neutron and proton is also provided, confirming essentially the values used in the standard procedure for extracting the neutron structure functions from both deep-inelastic scattering and semi-inclusive reactions, in the same kinematical regime.

Catching a glimpse of the parton structure of the bound proton

A new generation of experiments is expected to shed light on the elusive parton structure of the bound proton. One of the most promising directions is incoherent deeply virtual Compton scattering, which can provide a tomographic view of the bound proton. The first measurement has been recently performed, using $^4$He targets at Jefferson Lab. In the work presented here, a rigorous Impulse Approximation analysis of this process is proposed. As ingredients, state-of-the-art models of the nuclear spectral function and of the parton structure of the struck proton, together with novel scattering amplitudes expressions for a bound moving nucleon, have been used. A good overall agreement with the data is obtained, in particular at high values of the photon virtuality. The observed big difference between results for the bound proton and those for the free one turns out to be due in small part to modifications of the parton structure, and rather it should be related to kinematical nuclear effects. The analysis demonstrates that the comparison of the results of this approach, based on a conventional description, with future precise data, has the potential to expose exotic quark and gluon effects in nuclei.

EMC effect, few-nucleon systems and Poincaré covariance

An approach for a Poincaré covariant description of nuclear structure and of lepton scattering off nuclei is proposed within the relativistic Hamiltonian dynamics in the light-front form. Indeed a high level of accuracy is needed for a comparison with the increasingly precise present and future experimental data at high momentum transfer. Therefore, to distinguish genuine QCD effects or effects of medium modified nucleon structure functions from conventional nuclear structure effects, the commutation rules between the Poincaré generators should be satisfied. For the first time in this paper a proper hadronic tensor for inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off nuclei is derived in the impulse approximation in terms of the single nucleon hadronic tensor. Our approach is based : i) on a light-front spectral function for nuclei, obtained taking advantage of the successful non-relativistic knowledge of nuclear interaction, and ii) on the free current operator that, if defined in the Breit reference frame with the momentum transfer, $\bf q$, parallel to the $z$ axis, fulfills Poincaré covariance and current conservation. Our results can be generalized : i) to exclusive processes or to semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes; ii) to the case where the final state interaction is considered through a Glauber approximation; iii) to finite momentum transfer kinematics. As a first test, the hadronic tensor is applied to obtain the nuclear structure function F$_2^A$ and to evaluate the EMC effect for $^3He$ in the Bjorken limit. Encouraging results including only the two-body part of the light-front spectral function are presented.

Generalized parton distributions of light nuclei

The measurement of nuclear generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in hard exclusive processes, such as deeply virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS), will be one of the main achievements of a new generation of experiments at high luminosity, such as those under way at the Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) with the 12 GeV electron beam and, above all, those planned at the future Electron Ion Collider. The CLAS collaboration at JLab has recently demonstrated the possibility to disentangle the two different channels of nuclear DVCS, the coherent and incoherent ones, a first step towards the measurement of GPDs of nuclei and of bound nucleons, respectively, opening new exciting perspectives in the field. In this scenario, theoretical precise calculations, ultimately realistic, become mandatory. Light nuclei, for which realistic studies are affordable and conventional nuclear effects can be safely estimated, so that possible exotic effects can be exposed, play an important role. The status of the calculation of GPDs for light nuclei will be summarized, in particular for $^3$He and $^4$He, and some updates will be presented. The prospects for the next years, related to the new series of measurements at future facilities, will be addressed.

Incoherent deeply virtual Compton scattering off $^4$He

Very recently, for the first time, the two channels of nuclear deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS), the coherent and incoherent ones, have been separated by the CLAS collaboration at JLab, using a $^4$He target. The incoherent channel, which can provide a tomographic view of the bound proton and shed light on its elusive parton structure, is thoroughly analyzed here in Impulse Approximation (IA). A convolution formula for the cross sections in terms of those for the bound proton is derived. Novel scattering amplitudes for a bound moving nucleon have been obtained and used. A state-of-the-art nuclear spectral function, based on the AV18 potential, exact in the two-body part, with the recoiling system in its ground state, and modelled in the remaining contribution, with the recoiling system in an excited state, has been used. Different parametrizations of the generalized parton distributions of the struck proton have been tested. A good overall agreement with the data for the beam spin asymmetry (BSA) is obtained. It is found that the predicted conventional nuclear effects are relevant in DVCS and in the competing Bethe-Heitler mechanism, but they cancel each other to a large extent in their ratio, to which the measured asymmetry is proportional. Besides, the calculated ratio of the BSA of the bound proton to that of the free one does not describe that estimated by the experimental collaboration. This points to possible interesting effects beyond the IA analysis presented here. It is therefore clearly demonstrated that the comparison of the results of a conventional realistic approach, as the one presented here, with future precise data, has the potential to expose quark and gluon effects in nuclei. Interesting perspectives for the next measurements at high luminosity facilities, such as JLab at 12 GeV and the future EIC, are addressed.

Deeply virtual Compton Scattering off $^4$He

Deeply virtual Compton scattering is a fascinating process which can provide a tomographic view of nuclei and bound nucleons. The first experimental results for $^4$He targets, recently released at Jefferson Lab, have been analyzed here in a rigorous Impulse Approximation scenario. For both the coherent and incoherent channels of the process, the main experimental observables have been written in terms of state-of-the-art models of the nuclear spectral function and of the parton structure of the bound proton. A good overall agreement with the data is obtained. The calculation shows that a comparison of our conventional results with future precise data can expose novel quark and gluon effects in nuclei.

Double parton distributions in the pion in the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model

Two-parton correlations in the pion, a non perturbative information encoded in double parton distribution functions, are investigated in the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model. It is found that double parton distribution functions expose novel dynamical information on the structure of the pion, not accessible through one-body parton distributions, as it happens in several estimates for the proton target and in a previous evaluation for the pion, in a light-cone framework. Expressions and predictions are given for double parton distributions corresponding to leading-twist Dirac operators in the quark vertices, and to different regularization methods for the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model. These results are particularly relevant in view of forthcoming lattice data.

Correlations in Double Parton Distributions: Perturbative and Non-Perturbative effects

The correct description of Double Parton Scattering (DPS), which represents a background in several channels for the search of new Physics at the LHC, requires the knowledge of double parton distribution functions (dPDFs). These quantities represent also a novel tool for the study of the three-dimensional nucleon structure, complementary to the possibilities offered by electromagnetic probes. In this paper we analyze dPDFs using Poincaré covariant predictions obtained by using a Light-Front constituent quark model proposed in a recent paper, and QCD evolution. We study to what extent factorized expressions for dPDFs, which neglect, at least in part, two-parton correlations, can be used. We show that they fail in reproducing the calculated dPDFs, in particular in the valence region. Actually measurable processes at existing facilities occur at low longitudinal momenta of the interacting partons; to have contact with these processes we have analyzed correlations between pairs of partons of different kind, finding that, in some cases, they are strongly suppressed at low longitudinal momenta, while for other distributions they can be sizeable. For example, the effect of gluon-gluon correlations can be as large as 20 $\%$. We have shown that these behaviors can be understood in terms of a delicate interference of non-perturbative correlations, generated by the dynamics of the model, and perturbative ones, generated by the model independent evolution procedure. Our analysis shows that at LHC kinematics two-parton correlations can be relevant in DPS, and therefore we address the possibility to study them experimentally.

Double parton scattering and 3D proton structure: A Light-Front analysis

Double parton scattering, occurring in high energy hadron-hadron collisions, e.g. at the LHC, is usually investigated through model dependent analyses of the so called effective cross section $σ_{eff}$. We present a dynamic approach to this fundamental quantity making use of a Light-Front model treatment. Within such a framework $σ_{eff}$ is initially evaluated at low energy scale using the model and then, through QCD evolution, at high energy scale to reach the experimental conditions. Our numerical outcomes are consistent with the present experimental analyses of data in kinematical region we investigate. An important result of the present work is the $x_i$ dependence of $σ_{eff}$, a feature directly connected to double parton correlations and which could unveil new information on the three dimensional structure of the proton.

The 3He spectral function in light-front dynamics

A distorted spin-dependent spectral function for 3He is considered for the extraction of the transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions in the neutron from semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He at finite momentum transfers, where final state interactions are taken into account. The generalization of the analysis to a Poincaré covariant framework within the light-front dynamics is outlined.

Pion transverse momentum dependent parton distributions in the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model

An explicit evaluation of the two pion transverse momentum dependent parton distributions at leading twist is presented, in the framework of the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with Pauli-Villars regularization. The transverse momentum dependence of the obtained distributions is generated solely by the dynamics of the model. Using these results, the so called generalized Boer-Mulders shift is studied and compared with recent lattice data. The obtained agreement is very encouraging, in particular because no additional parameter has been introduced. A more conclusive comparison would require a precise knowledge of the QCD evolution of the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions under scrutiny.

A Light-Front approach to the $^3$He spectral function

The analysis of semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized $^3$He at finite momentum transfers, aimed at the extraction of the quark transverse-momentum distributions in the neutron, requires the use of a distorted spin-dependent spectral function for $^3$He, which takes care of the final state interaction effects. This quantity is introduced in the non-relativistic case, and its generalization in a Poincaré covariant framework, in plane wave impulse approximation for the moment being, is outlined. Studying the light-front spin-dependent spectral function for a J=1/2 system, such as the nucleon, it is found that, within the light-front dynamics with a fixed number of constituents and in the valence approximation, only three of the six leading twist T-even transverse-momentum distributions are independent.

Coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering off 3He and neutron generalized parton distributions

It has been recently proposed to study coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off 3He nuclei to access neutron generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In particular, it has been shown that, in Impulse Approximation (IA) and at low momentum transfer, the sum of the quark helicity conserving GPDs of 3He, H and E, is dominated by the neutron contribution. This peculiar result makes the 3He target very promising to access the neutron information. We present here the IA calculation of the spin dependent GPD tilde-H of 3He. Also for this quantity the neutron contribution is found to be the dominant one, at low momentum transfer. The known forward limit of the IA calculation of tilde-H, yielding the polarized parton distributions of 3He, is correctly recovered. The extraction of the neutron information could be anyway non trivial, so that a procedure, able to take into account the nuclear effects encoded in the IA analysis, is proposed. These calculations, essential for the evaluation of the coherent DVCS cross section asymmetries, which depend on the GPDs H, E and tilde-H, represent a crucial step for planning possible experiments at Jefferson Lab.

Double parton correlations and constituent quark models: a Light Front approach to the valence sector

An explicit evaluation of the double parton distribution functions (dPDFs), within a relativistic Light-Front approach to constituent quark models, is presented. dPDFs encode information on the correlations between two partons inside a target and represent the non-perturbative QCD ingredient for the description of double parton scattering in proton-proton collisions, a crucial issue in the search of new Physics at the LHC. Valence dPDFs are evaluated at the low scale of the model and the perturbative scale of the experiments is reached by means of QCD evolution. The present results show that the strong correlation effects present at the scale of the model are still sizable, in the valence region, at the experimental scale. At the low values of x presently studied at the LHC the correlations become less relevant, although they are still important for the spin-dependent contributions to unpolarized proton scattering.

Double parton correlations in Light-Front constituent quark model

Double parton distribution functions (dPDF) represent a tool to explore the 3D proton structure. They can be measured in high energy proton-proton and proton nucleus collisions and encode information on how partons inside a proton are correlated among each other. dPFDs are studied here in the valence quark region, by means of a constituent quark model, where two particle correlations are present without any additional prescription. This framework allows to understand the dynamical origin of the correlations and to clarify which, among the features of the results, are model independent. Use will be made of a relativistic light-front scheme, able to overcome some drawbacks of the previous calculation. Transverse momentum correlations, due to the exact treatment of the boosts, are predicted and analyzed. The role of spin correlations is also shown. Due to the covariance of the approach, some symmetries of the dPDFs are seen unambigously. For the valence sector, the study of the QCD evolution of the model results, which can be performed safely thanks to the property of good support, has been also completed.

Double parton distributions in Light-Front constituent quark models

Double parton distribution functions (dPDF), accessible in high energy proton-proton and proton nucleus collisions, encode information on how partons inside a proton are correlated among each other and could represent a tool to explore the 3D proton structure. In recent papers, double parton correlations have been studied in the valence quark region, by means of constituent quark models. This framework allows to understand clearly the dynamical origin of the correlations and to establish which, among the features of the results, are model independent. Recent relevant results, obtained in a relativistic light-front scheme, able to overcome some drawbacks of previous calculations, such as the poor support, will be presented. Peculiar transverse momentum correlations, generated by the correct treatment of the boosts, are obtained. The role of spin correlations will be also shown. In this covariant approach, the symmetries of the dPDFs are unambiguously reproduced. The study of the QCD evolution of the model results has been performed in the valence sector, showing that, in some cases, the effect of evolution does not cancel that of correlations.

Theoretical description of deeply virtual Compton scattering off $^3$He

Recently, coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off $^3$He nuclei has been proposed to access the neutron generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In Impulse Approximation (IA) studies, it has been shown, in particular, that the sum of the two leading twist, quark helicity conserving GPDs of $^3$He, $H$ and $E$, at low momentum transfer, is dominated by the neutron contribution, so that $^3$He is very promising for the extraction of the neutron information. Nevertheless, such an extraction could be not trivial. A technique, able to take into account the nuclear effects included in the IA analysis in the extraction procedure, has been therefore developed. In this work, the IA calculation of the spin dependent GPD $\tilde H$ of $^3$He is presented for the first time. This quantity is found to be largely dominated, at low momentum transfer, by the neutron contribution, which could be extracted using arguments similar to the ones previously proposed for the other GPDs. The known forward limit of the IA calculation of $\tilde H$, yielding the polarized parton distributions of $^3$He, is correctly recovered. The knowledge of the GPDs $H, E$ and $\tilde H$ of $^3$He will allow now the evaluation of the cross section asymmetries which are relevant for coherent DVCS off $^3$He at Jefferson Lab kinematics, an important step towards the planning of possible experiments.

Towards an improved description of SiDIS by a polarized 3He target

The possibility of improving the description of the semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He, that provides information on the neutron single spin asymmetries, is illustrated. In particular, the analysis at finite momentum transfers in a Poincare' covariant framework is outlined and a generalized eikonal approach to include final state interaction is presented.

Generalized parton distributions of 3He and the neutron orbital structure

The two leading twist, quark helicity conserving generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of 3He, accessible, for example, in coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS), are calculated in impulse approximation (IA). Their sum, at low momentum transfer, is found to be largely dominated by the neutron contribution, so that 3He is very promising for the extraction of the neutron information. Anyway, such an extraction could be not trivial. A technique, able to take into account the nuclear effects included in the IA analysis in the extraction procedure, even at moderate values of the momentum transfer, is proposed. Coherent DVCS arises therefore as a crucial experiment to access, for the first time, the neutron GPDs and the orbital angular momentum of the partons in the neutron.

Neutron Transverse-Momentum Distributions and Polarized 3He within Light-Front Hamiltonian Dynamics

The possibility to extract the quark transverse-momentum distributions in the neutron from semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He is illustrated through an impulse approximation analysis in the Bjorken limit. The generalization of the analysis at finite momentum transfers in a Poincare' covariant framework is outlined. The definition of the light-front spin-dependent spectral function of a J=1/2 system allows us to show that within the light-front dynamics only three of the six leading twist T-even transverse-momentum distributions are independent.

Quark Transverse Momentum Distributions inside a nucleon : a Light-Front Hamiltonian Dynamics study

Through an impulse approximation analysis of single spin Sivers and Collins asymmetries in the Bjorken limit, the possibility to extract the quark transverse-momentum distributions in the neutron from semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He is illustrated. The analysis is generalized to finite momentum transfers in a light-front Poincare' covariant framework, defining the light-front spin-dependent spectral function of a J=1/2 system. The definition of the light-front spin-dependent spectral function for constituent quarks in the nucleon allows us to show that, within the light-front dynamics, only three of the six leading twist T-even transverse-momentum distributions are independent.

Studying the neutron orbital structure by coherent hard exclusive processes off 3He

Hard exclusive processes, such as Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS), allow to access generalized parton distributions (GPDs). By means of an Impulse Approximation (IA) calculation, it is shown here how, in the low momentum transfer region, the sum of the GPDs H and E is dominated by the neutron contribution. Thanks to this property, 3He could open a new way to access the neutron structure information. In this work, a simple and efficient extraction procedure of the neutron GPDs, able to take into account the nuclear effects included in IA analysis, is proposed.

Helicity dependent parton distributions

The helicity dependent parton distributions describe the number density of partons with given longitudinal momentum x and given polarization in a hadron polarized longitudinally with respect to its motion. After the discovery, more than 70 years ago, that the proton is not elementary, the observation of Bjorken scaling in the late 1960s lead to the idea of hadrons containing almost pointlike constituents, the partons. Since then, Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) has played a crucial role in our understanding of hadron structure. Through DIS experiments it has been possible to link the partons to the quarks, and to unveil the presence of other pointlike constituents, the gluons, which lead into a dynamical theory of quarks and gluons - quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Polarized DIS, i.e. the collision of a longitudinally polarized lepton beam on a polarized target (either longitudinally or transversely polarized), provides a complementary information regarding the structure of the nucleon. Whereas ordinary DIS probes simply the number density of partons with a fraction x of the momentum of the parent hadron, polarized DIS can partly answer the question as to the number density of partons with given x and given spin polarization in a hadron of definite polarization, either parallel or transverse with respect to the motion of the hadron. In here, the phenomenology associated with DIS off longitudinally polarized targets, and the present theoretical understanding of the dynamics involved, are described.

Transversity studies with protons and light nuclei

A general formalism to evaluate time-reversal odd transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (T-odd TMDS) is reviewed and applied to the calculation of the leading-twist quantities, i.e., the Sivers and the Boer-Mulders functions. Two different models of the proton structure, namely a non relativistic constituent quark model and the MIT bag model, have been used. The results obtained in both frameworks fulfill the Burkardt sum rule to a large extent. The calculation of nuclear effects in the extraction of neutron single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off transversely polarized $^3$He is also illustrated. It is found that the nuclear effects described by an Impulse Approximation approach are under theoretical control.

Generalized parton distributions and composite constituent quarks

An approach is proposed to calculate Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) in a Constituent Quark Model (CQM) scenario, considering the constituent quarks as complex systems. The GPDs are obtained from the wave functions of the non relativistic CQM of Isgur and Karl, convoluted with the GPDs of the constituent quarks themselves. The latter are modelled by using the structure functions of the constituent quark, the double distribution representation of GPDs, and a recently proposed phenomenological constituent quark form factor. The present approach permits to access a kinematical range corresponding to both the DGLAP and the ERBL regions, for small values of the momentum transfer and of the skewedness parameter. In this kinematical region, the cross sections relevant to deeply virtual Compton scattering could be estimated by using the obtained GPDs. As an example, the leading twist, unpolarized GPD $H$ has been calculated. Its general relations with the non relativistic definition of the electric form factor and with the leading twist unpolarized quark density are consistently recovered from our expressions.Further natural applications of the proposed approach are addressed.

Nucleon structure functions in a constituent quark scenario

Using a simple picture of the constituent quark as a composite system of point-like partons, we construct the polarized parton distributions by a convolution between constituent quark momentum distributions and constituent quark structure functions. We achieve good agreement with experiments in the unpolarized as well as in the polarized case, though a good description of the recent polarized neutron data requires the introduction of one more parameter. When our results are compared with similar calculations using non-composite constituent quarks, the accord with the experiments of the present scheme is impressive. We conclude that DIS data are consistent with a low energy scenario dominated by composite constituents of the nucleon.
