Numerical test for hyperbolicity of chaotic dynamics in time-delay systems

We develop a numerical test of hyperbolicity of chaotic dynamics in time-delay systems. The test is based on the angle criterion and includes computation of angle distributions between expanding, contracting and neutral manifolds of trajectories on the attractor. Three examples are tested. For two of them previously predicted hyperbolicity is confirmed. The third one provides an example of a time-delay system with nonhyperbolic chaos.

Strange Nonchaotic Self-Oscillator

An example of strange nonchaotic attractor (SNA) is discussed in a dissipative system of mechanical nature driven by constant torque applied to one of the elements of the construction. So the external force is not oscillatory, and the system is autonomous. Components of the motion with incommensurable frequencies emerge due to the irrational ratio of sizes of the involved rotating elements. We regard the phenomenon as strange nonchaotic self-oscillations, and its existence sheds new light on the question of feasibility of SNA in autonomous systems.

Four-dimensional system with torus attractor birth via saddle-node bifurcation of limit cycles in content of family of blue sky catastrophes

A new four-dimensional model with quasi-periodic dynamics is suggested. The torus attractor originates via the saddle-node bifurcation, which may be regarded as a member of a bifurcation family embracing different types of blue sky catastrophes. Also the torus birth trough the Neimark-Sacker bifurcation occurs in some other region of the parameter space.

Hyperbolic chaos in self-oscillating systems based on mechanical triple linkage: Testing absence of tangencies of stable and unstable manifolds for phase trajectories

Dynamical equations are formulated and a numerical study is provided for self-oscillatory model systems based on the triple linkage hinge mechanism of Thurston -- Weeks -- Hunt -- MacKay. We consider systems with holonomic mechanical constraint of three rotators as well as systems, where three rotators interact by potential forces. We present and discuss some quantitative characteristics of the chaotic regimes (Lyapunov exponents, power spectrum). Chaotic dynamics of the models we consider are associated with hyperbolic attractors, at least, at relatively small supercriticality of the self-oscillating modes; that follows from numerical analysis of the distribution for angles of intersection of stable and unstable manifolds of phase trajectories on the attractors. In systems based on rotators with interacting potential the hyperbolicity is violated starting from a certain level of excitation.

Attractor of Smale-Williams type in autonomous distributed system

We consider an autonomous system of partial differential equations for one-dimensional distributed medium with periodic boundary conditions. Dynamics in time consists of alternating birth and death of patterns with spatial phases transformed from one stage of activity to another by the doubly expanding circle map. So, attractor in the Poincaré section is uniformly hyperbolic, a kind of Smale-Williams solenoid. Finite-dimensional models are derived as ordinary differential equations for amplitudes of spatial Fourier modes (the 5D and 7D models). Correspondence of the reduced models to the original system is demonstrated numerically. Computational verification of the hyperbolicity criterion is performed for the reduced models: the distribution of angles of intersection for stable and unstable manifolds on the attractor is separated from zero, i.e. the touches are excluded. The considered example gives a partial justification to the old hopes that chaotic behavior of autonomous distributed systems may be associated with uniformly hyperbolic attractors.

About Landau-Hopf scenario in a system of coupled self-oscillators

The conditions are discussed for which an ensemble of interacting oscillators may demonstrate the Landau-Hopf scenario of successive birth of multi-frequency quasi-periodic motions. A model is proposed that is a network of five globally coupled oscillators characterized by controlled degree of activation of individual oscillators. Illustrations are given for successive birth of tori of increasing dimension via quasi-periodic Hopf bifurcations.

Hyperbolic chaos at blinking coupling of noisy oscillators

We study an ensemble of identical noisy phase oscillators with a blinking mean-field coupling, where one-cluster and two-cluster synchronous states alternate. In the thermodynamic limit the population is described by a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. We show that the dynamics of the order parameters demonstrates hyperbolic chaos. The chaoticity manifests itself in phases of the complex mean field, which obey a strongly chaotic Bernoulli map. Hyperbolicity is confirmed by numerical tests based on the calculations of relevant invariant Lyapunov vectors and Lyapunov exponents. We show how the chaotic dynamics of the phases is slightly smeared by finite-size fluctuations.

A "saddle-node" bifurcation scenario for birth or destruction of a Smale-Williams solenoid

Formation or destruction of hyperbolic chaotic attractor under parameter variation is considered with an example represented by Smale--Williams solenoid in stroboscopic Poincaré map of two alternately excited non-autonomous van der Pol oscillators. The transition occupies a narrow but finite parameter interval and progresses in such way that periodic orbits constituting a "skeleton" of the attractor undergo saddle-node bifurcation events involving partner orbits from the attractor and from a non-attracting invariant set, which forms together with its stable manifold a basin boundary of the attractor.

Hyperbolic Chaos of Turing Patterns

We consider time evolution of Turing patterns in an extended system governed by an equation of the Swift-Hohenberg type, where due to an external periodic parameter modulation long-wave and short-wave patterns with length scales related as 1:3 emerge in succession. We show theoretically and demonstrate numerically that the spatial phases of the patterns, being observed stroboscopically, are governed by an expanding circle map, so that the corresponding chaos of Turing patterns is hyperbolic, associated with a strange attractor of the Smale-Williams solenoid type. This chaos is shown to be robust with respect to variations of parameters and boundary conditions.

Electronic circuits manifesting hyperbolic chaos and their simulation with software package Multisim

We consider several electronic circuits, which represent dynamical systems with hyperbolic chaotic attractors of Smale-Williams type, and demonstrate results of their simulation using the software package NI Multisim 10. The developed approach is useful as an intermediate step of constructing real electronic devices manifesting structurally stable hyperbolic chaos applicable e.g. in systems of secure communication, noise radar, for cryptographic systems and random number generators. This is also of methodological interest for training students who specialize in radio-physics and nonlinear dynamics in the design and analysis of systems with complex dynamics using examples close to practical applications.

Attractor of Smale - Williams type in an autonomous time-delay system

We propose an example of smooth autonomous system governed by differential delay equation manifesting chaotic dynamics apparently associated with hyperbolic attractor of Smale - Williams type. The general idea is to depart from a system generating successive pulses of oscillations, each of which gives rise to the next one with transformation of the phase in accordance with chaotic Bernoulli map. From mathematical point of view, it is an infinite-dimensional system due to presence of the time delay. Nevertheless, the material we present gives a foundation to assert that the model delivers an example of a small-dimensional hyperbolic strange attractor, embedded in the infinite-dimensional phase space.

Collective Phase Chaos in the Dynamics of Interacting Oscillator Ensembles

We study chaotic behavior of order parameters in two coupled ensembles of self-sustained oscillators. Coupling within each of these ensembles is switched on and off alternately, while the mutual interaction between these two subsystems is arranged through quadratic nonlinear coupling. We show numerically that in the course of alternating Kuramoto transitions to synchrony and back to asynchrony, the exchange of excitations between two subpopulations proceeds in such a way that their collective phases are governed by an expanding circle map similar to the Bernoulli map. We perform the Lyapunov analysis of the dynamics and discuss finite-size effects.

Violation of hyperbolicity in a diffusive medium with local hyperbolic attractor

Departing from a system of two non-autonomous amplitude equations, demonstrating hyperbolic chaotic dynamics, we construct a 1D medium as ensemble of such local elements introducing spatial coupling via diffusion. When the length of the medium is small, all spatial cells oscillate synchronously, reproducing the local hyperbolic dynamics. This regime is characterized by a single positive Lyapunov exponent. The hyperbolicity survives when the system gets larger in length so that the second Lyapunov exponent passes zero, and the oscillations become inhomogeneous in space. However, at a point where the third Lyapunov exponent becomes positive, some bifurcation occurs that results in violation of the hyperbolicity due to the emergence of one-dimensional intersections of contracting and expanding tangent subspaces along trajectories on the attractor. Further growth of the length results in two-dimensional intersections of expanding and contracting subspaces that we classify as a stronger type of the violation. Beyond of the point of the hyperbolicity loss, the system demonstrates an extensive spatiotemporal chaos typical for extended chaotic systems: when the length of the system increases the Kaplan-Yorke dimension, the number of positive Lyapunov exponents, and the upper estimate for Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy grow linearly, while the Lyapunov spectrum tends to a limiting curve.
