Constructive controllability for incompressible vector fields

We give a constructive proof of a global controllability result for an autonomous system of ODEs guided by bounded locally Lipschitz and divergence free (i.e.\ incompressible) vector field, when the phase space is the whole Euclidean space and the vector field satisfies so-called vanishing mean drift condition. For the case when the ODE is defined over some smooth compact connected Riemannian manifold, we significantly strengthen the assertion of the known controllability theorem in absence of nonholonomic constraints by proving that one can find a control steering the state vector from one given point to another by using the observations of only the state vector, i.e., in other words, by changing slightly the vector field, and such a change can be made small not only in uniform, but also in Lipschitz (i.e. $C^1$) topology.

Inverse shadowing and related measures

We study various weaker forms of inverse shadowing property for discrete dynamical systems on a smooth compact manifold. First, we introduce the so-called Ergodic Inverse Shadowing property (Birhhoff averages of continuous functions along the exact trajectory and the approximating one are close). We demonstrate that this property implies continuity of the set of invariant measures in Hausdorff metrics. We show that the class of systems with Ergodic Inverse Shadowing is quite broad, it includes all diffeomorphisms with hyperbolic nonwandering sets. Secondly, we study the so-called Individual Inverse Shadowing (any exact trajectory can be traced by approximate ones but this shadowing is not uniform with respect to selection of the initial point of the trajectory). We demonstrate that this property is closely related to Structural Stability and $Ω$-stability of diffeomorphisms.

Multishadowing in topological dynamics

An approach to find a weak form of shadowing is developed. We consider homeomorphisms of a compact metric space. It is proved that every pseudotrajectory with sufficiently small errors contains at least one subsequence that can be shadowed by a subsequence of an exact trajectory with same indices. We study systems with so-called multishadowing property that is any pseudotrajectory can be shadowed by a finite number of exact orbits. Criteria for existence of $\varepsilon$-- networks whose iterations are $\varepsilon$ -- networks are given. Relations between multishadowing and some ergodic and topological properties of dynamical systems are discussed.

Stability by linear approximation for time scale dynamical systems

We study systems on time scales that are generalizations of classical differential or difference equations. In this paper we consider linear systems and their small nonlinear perturbations. In terms of time scales and of eigenvalues of matrices we formulate conditions, sufficient for stability by linear approximation. We demonstrate that those conditions are close to necessary ones. For non-periodic time scales we use techniques of central upper Lyapunov exponents (a common tool of the theory of linear ODEs) to study stability of solutions. Also, time scale versions of the famous Chetaev's theorem on conditional instability are proved.

One-dimensional chaos in a system with dry friction: analytical approach

We introduce a new analytical method, which allows to find out chaotic dynamics in non-smooth dynamical systems. A simple mechanical system consisting of a mass and a dry friction element is considered as an example. The corresponding mathematical model is represented. We show that the considered dynamical system is a skew product over a piecewise smooth mapping of a segment (a base map). For this base map we demonstrate there is a domain of parameters where a robust chaotic dynamics can be observed. Namely, we prove existence of an infinite set of periodic points of arbitrarily big period. Moreover, a reduction of the considered map is semi-conjugated to a shift on the set of one-sided infinite boolean sequences. Also, we find conditions, sufficient for existence of a superstable periodic point of this map. The obtained result partially solves a general problem: theoretical confirmation of chaotic and periodic regimes numerically and experimentally observed for models of percussion drilling.

Through the Looking-Glass of the Grazing Bifurcation: Part I - Theoretical framework

It is well-known for vibro-impact systems that the existence of a periodic solution with a low-velocity impact (so-called grazing) may yield complex behavior of the solutions. In this paper we show that unstable periodic motions which pass near the delimiter without touching it may give birth to chaotic behavior of nearby solutions. We demonstrate that the number of impacts over a period of forcing varies in a small neighborhood of such periodic motions. This allows us to use the technique of symbolic dynamics. It is shown that chaos may be observed in a two-sided neighborhood of grazing and this bifurcation manifests at least two distinct ways to a complex behavior. In the second part of the paper we study the robustness of this phenomenon. Particularly, we show that the same effect can be observed in "soft" models of impacts.

Dynamics near nonhyperbolic fixed points or nontransverse homoclinic points

We study dynamics in a neighborhood of a nonhyperbolic fixed point or an irreducible homoclinic tangent point. General type conditions for the existence of infinite sets of periodic points are obtained. A new method, based on the study of the dynamics of center disks, is introduced. Some results on shadowing near a non-hyperbolic fixed point of a homeomorphism are obtained.

Topology of Vibro-Impact Systems in the Neighborhood of Grazing

The grazing bifurcation is considered for the Newtonian model of vibro-impact systems. A brief review on the conditions, sufficient for existence of a grazing family of periodic solutions, is given. The properties of these periodic solutions are discussed. A plenty of results on the topological structure of attractors of vibro-impact systems is known. However, since the considered system is strongly nonlinear, these attractors may be invisible or, at least, very sensitive to changes of parameters of the system. On the other hand, they are observed in experiments and numerical simulations. We offer (Theorem 2) an approach which allows to explain this contradiction and give a new robust mathematical model of the non-hyperbolic dynamics in the neighborhood of grazing.
