Constructive controllability for incompressible vector fields

We give a constructive proof of a global controllability result for an autonomous system of ODEs guided by bounded locally Lipschitz and divergence free (i.e.\ incompressible) vector field, when the phase space is the whole Euclidean space and the vector field satisfies so-called vanishing mean drift condition. For the case when the ODE is defined over some smooth compact connected Riemannian manifold, we significantly strengthen the assertion of the known controllability theorem in absence of nonholonomic constraints by proving that one can find a control steering the state vector from one given point to another by using the observations of only the state vector, i.e., in other words, by changing slightly the vector field, and such a change can be made small not only in uniform, but also in Lipschitz (i.e. $C^1$) topology.

Infinite multidimensional scaling for metric measure spaces

For a given metric measure space $(X,d,μ)$ we consider finite samples of points, calculate the matrix of distances between them and then reconstruct the points in some finite-dimensional space using the multidimensional scaling (MDS) algorithm with this distance matrix as an input. We show that this procedure gives a natural limit as the number of points in the samples grows to infinity and the density of points approaches the measure $μ$. This limit can be viewed as "infinite MDS" embedding of the original space, now not anymore into a finite-dimensional space but rather into an infinitedimensional Hilbert space. We further show that this embedding is stable with respect to the natural convergence of metric measure spaces. However, contrary to what is usually believed in applications, we show that in many cases it does not preserve distances, nor is even bi-Lipschitz, but may provide snowflake (Assouad-type) embeddings of the original space to a Hilbert space (this is, for instance, the case of a sphere and a flat torus equipped with their geodesic distances).

Towards geometric integration of rough differential forms

We provide a draft of a theory of geometric integration of rough differential forms which are generalizations of classical (smooth) differential forms to similar objects with very low regularity, for instance, involving Hölder continuous functions that may be nowhere differentiable. Borrowing ideas from the theory of rough paths, we show that such a geometric integration can be constructed substituting appropriately differentials with more general asymptotic expansions. This can be seen as the basis of geometric integration similar to that used in geometric measure theory, but without any underlying differentiable structure, thus allowing Lipschitz functions and rectifiable sets to be substituted by far less regular objects (e.g. Hölder functions and their images which may be purely unrectifiable). Our construction includes both the one-dimensional Young integral and multidimensional integrals introduced recently by R. Züst. To simplify the exposition, we limit ourselves to integration of forms of dimensions not exceeding two.

A rough calculus approach to level sets in the Heisenberg group

We introduce novel equations, in the spirit of rough path theory, that parametrize level sets of intrinsically regular maps on the Heisenberg group with values in $\mathbb{R}^2$. These equations can be seen as a sub-Riemannian counterpart to classical ODEs arising from the implicit function theorem. We show that they enjoy all the natural well-posedness properties, thus allowing for a "good calculus" on nonsmooth level sets. We apply these results to prove an area formula for the intrinsic measure of level sets, along with the corresponding coarea formula.

Regularity for the optimal compliance problem with length penalization

We prove some regularity results for a connected set S in the planar domain O, which minimizes the compliance of its complement O§, plus its length. This problem, interpreted as to find the best location for attaching a membrane subject to a given external force f so as to minimize the compliance, can be seen as an elliptic PDE version of the average distance problem/irrigation problem (in a penalized version rather than a constrained one), which has been extensively studied in the literature. We prove that minimizers consist of a finite number of smooth curves meeting only by three at 120 degree angles, containing no loop, and possibly touching the boundary of the domain only tangentially. Several new technical tools together with the classical ones are developed for this purpose.

Three superposition principles: currents, continuity equations and curves of measures

We establish a general superposition principle for curves of measures solving a continuity equation on metric spaces without any smooth structure nor underlying measure, representing them as marginals of measures concentrated on the solutions of the associated ODE defined by some algebra of observables. We relate this result with decomposition of acyclic normal currents in metric spaces. As an application, a slightly extended version of a probabilistic representation for absolutely continuous curves in Kantorovich-Wasserstein spaces, originally due to S. Lisini, is provided in the metric framework. This gives a hierarchy of implications between superposition principles for curves of measures and for metric currents.

Stationary configurations for the average distance functional and related problems

For a functional defined on the class of closed one-dimensional connected subsets of ${\mathbb R}^n$ we consider the corresponding minimization problem and we give suitable first order necessary conditions of optimality. The cases studied here are the average distance functional arising in the mass transportation theory, and the energy related to an elliptic PDE.

Structure of metric cycles and normal one-dimensional currents

We prove that every one-dimensional real Ambrosio-Kirchheim normal current in a Polish (i.e. complete separable metric) space can be naturally represented as an integral of simpler currents associated to Lipschitz curves. As a consequence a representation of every such current with zero boundary (i.e. a cycle) as an integral of so-called elementary solenoids (which are, very roughly speaking, more or less the same as asymptotic cycles introduced by S. Schwartzman)is obtained. The latter result on cycles is in fact a generalization of the analogous result proven by S. Smirnov for classical Whitney currents in a Euclidean space. The same results are true for every complete metric space under suitable set-theoretic assumptions.

Asymptotic optimal location of facilities in a competition between population and industries

We consider the problem of optimally locating a given number $k$ of points in ${\mathbb R}^n$ for an integral cost function which takes into account two measures $φ^+$ and $φ^-$. The points represent for example new industrial facilities that have to be located, the measure $φ^+$ representing in this case already existing industries that want to be close to the new ones, and $φ^-$ representing private citizens who want to stay far away. The asymptotic analysis as $k\to\infty$ is performed, providing the asymptotic density of optimal locations.
